That was one of the very few David Allen Coe songs that were fit to be put on the radio. I don't think Ty, or any other viewers here, would appreciate very many of the DAC songs that weren't allowed on radio.

Thank you for this reaction. I am 50 yrs. old, so I've heard it since it came out, and prefer "classic" country to the new stuff. To me, country music is about the lyrics first, and the music second. It doesn't have to have a deep meaning, this song certainly doesn't, but it is fun to listen to, and I can hear and understand the words, and it talks about some part of the human experience, even if I haven't had that experience personally, or it tells a story. The music is there to accompany the words, and fill in spaces between words. A lot of rock n roll songs, the music appears to be put ahead of the lyrics. I listen to a lot of rock songs that I like the music to but couldn't tell you 1/4 of the words, or what the song is really about, mainly because I can't hear most of the words because the music is too loud. But that's ok, because that's what most rock songs are going for. Country songs can have deep meaning, or just be funny, light-hearted, they cover a whole range of emotions, but at the core they are about things that we can relate to, commiserate with, have experienced, or know people who have. It's about life, everyday life. A lot of the new country that I've heard, and I'll admit that's not a lot, seem to deal with hot chicks in short shorts and tight shirts wanting to party and drink on a dirt road, and as for me, that's not real relatable, and I can only take 1 or 2 of those songs before I've heard enough of them, and they are all like that. There doesn't need to be a twang, a lot of country singers are real smooth singers, but it's the ability to tell a story, and have it heard, that is somewhat relatable to most people, that is a good country song. And having a fiddle and steel guitar don't hurt either.

A friend of mine who happened to be black once told me that county music was "White man's blues." Maybe.? I think even though the majority of fans happen to be white, many of the songs speak of social issues that affect everyone.
Country songs often have a lesson about everyday life. Topics about relationships, family, drinking, trucking, poverty, money, working, heartache and triumph.
Many of the music instruments include guitars, basses, banjos and violins (fiddles). There isn't a lot of electronic or techno sounds. The music is simple and "pure."
Of course there is twang. There is harmony, the tempo ranges from up beat (dancing) to slower (contemplation/reflection), the songs generally have a hook, and can evoke emotions.
I like "I'm gonna hire a wino" because it's catchy. It takes a serious issue and discusses it in a light-hearted way. It makes the listener feel better about alcoholism.
Husband has a drinking problem and possibly is avoiding confrontation about at home. Wife is trying to pay bills but doesn't have money because husband spends it drinking (Now look what I've done. I done ruint a good song.)

Younger brother of Lefty Frizzell (Friz-EL) who was a popular country singer/songwriter in the 50s. Unfortunately Lefty died from alcoholism at the age of 47. David had another hit with Shelly West, daughter of the iconic Dottie West who died tragically in a car accident, called You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma which is a beautiful duet. The story and the beat makes for country music, and today's country has expanded itself to variations of different styles, but there are some current artists who perform the heart of the old country.

As Teresia says, he was the younger brother of Lefty Frizzell, a country music legend. Two of Lefty's biggest hits were "Long Black Veil" and "Saginaw Michigan". I think David sounds a lot like Lefty on this song. Unfortunately Lefty died at age 47.

This came out when I was a teenager. I always thought it was hilarious. I always imagine him as Andy Capp, from the funny pages, stumbling home from the bar, and barely able to stand up. Being accosted at the door by his angry wife Flo.
I don't know if you know who the British newspaper funny pages character and comic strip is, which is called "Andy Capp"? It was carried in a lot of American papers.
Anyway, that's how I imagine this poor alcoholic guy and his angry wife, lol.

I absolutely love this song. I remember hearing this as a kid and it was like a video played in my head to go along with the lyrics. Even today I have the same video in my mind when I hear this song. His other most popular song was a duet with Shelly West "You're the reason God made Oklahoma". His older brother Lefty was a very talented performer too. He did one of my all time favorite songs "Long Black Veil". Great request.

A lot of country music is about the bass line and steel guitar. And of course, if you’re gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band!
When I was in high school, I took bass lessons at a music shop owned by a local country and western band/family. My teacher taught me bass, my best friend guitar, and my mom the fiddle. He was a VERY talented musician.

First Country-western singer I heard and loved Johnny Cash, followed by Charley Pride, who being in the 5th grade I was totally envious of my friend Mike who went to a live concert with his dad to Mr. Pride's gig.

Part of it is the subject matter. Part is the 'country' accent and part is the use of instrumentation. For those who keep asking on every country reaction, the thing under a chin with strings is called a fiddle in country music, a violin in an orchestra. Same instrument, different techniques.

His friends would deposit him on the front step, ring the doorbell and speed away. The last time it happened she got him in the house put him in bed rolled him up in a sheet beat hell out of him with a wiffle ball bat and took what was left of his paycheck to pay bills, buy groceries, etc. They had twin babies. When he woke up the next morning, as usual he had no idea what had happened but he curtailed his Friday night escapades. Wise choice on his part.

What makes a song country??? a solid question, its really a combination of things, 1st is the music and instrumentation. 2nd the song itself is usually going to be about life or a life event that most people overlook. The TWANG as you say is sort of an authentication of the songs origins. The real origins of country music began in the wild wild west and cowboys, while herding stock to market. He'd be loping along on his horse, while the horse guided the stock, and the cowboy strummed away on his guitar and sang to pass the time. This is how Roy Rogers got the nickname of the singing cowboy, sitting up there on his horse named Trigger, and often accompanied by his wife, a cowgirl, Dale Evans. His singing eventually led to a Saturday Morning TV show but Roy and Dale never gave up their ranch. Country began with cowboys, whether sitting around a campfire or sitting on the horse, it really is usually all about a way of life.

Ken Burns put out a documentary last year called "Country Music" for PBS. Five parts (maybe six? I forget) and it's available on both RUclips and the PBS website. It will answer all of your questions about how country music started all the way to what's considered country today. (and the subtle differences between country, bluegrass, southern rock, and "hick-hop") It's a good watch. Fwiw, I've always considered the ultimate definition of country to be "three chords and the truth."

I grew up on and have loved classic country for over 50 years. David Frizzle is an old favorite and I love this song. I don't like 99% of the commercialized pop country today. With that being said....Upchurch has 10x the talent David Frizzle and a lot of my other favorite classic country artists had. You might want to open your mind a little bit, a lot of people miss out on some truly talented artists...

I danced to this song so much when I was in the Marines yes Country has a Twain but usually tells a story or a experience. Before the late 90s Country had some of the best Songwriter/Artist there was. From Johnny Cash Waylon Willie and Dolly but one of the best writers was a Rhodes Scholar named Kris Kristofferson his song named Loving you was easier then anything I'll ever do again by TomPaul and the Glaser Brothers to me was his best. Little side note about these Brothers they was kicked out of Nashville for years because they'd go to a Bar get drunk and try and wupp everyone there. ruclips.net/video/iXbzOP7T4g4/видео.html

I need you to react to Robert Johnson. He's the king of the blues and the father of rock and roll. I recommend doing some background on him first. It'll make his songs more impactful. I like to listen to Crossroad first, then Hellhound On My Trail, then Me And The Devil, then finally Preachin'. You should also watch the video Robert Johnson Exposed.

    Part 2 of "Country Music"
That said, there are many different styles of country music. And there's, I admit, some subjectivity in what is and is not country music.
It's roots go back to...a lot of places. Scotch-Irish ballads, etc. African music, 20th century southern gospel church music, Western Swing, jazz, Blues...for the "progressive country" of the 70s, which was NOT admired by older country fans oftentimes. They may have preferred Western Swing, or what was called "countrypolitan", or Bluegrass, etc. Older styles that influenced, but were different from the more raw and emotionally deeper music of the 70s.
There's always generational differences between the styles of country. But that doesn't mean that just anything can be considered country. And in the past few decades, they've went too far in the wrong direction. There's no "there", there. No substance at all to the so-called music. No meaning, no roots influence at all.
Country does best when it goes to its roots, and doesn't try to let the city people run it. Because they run it into the ground. They don't like, or "get" country. And they are the ones running Nashville now.
Once upon a time, there was musical integrity. But no more. Now it's all songs about sexy tractors, and hick-hop.
In the 80s (or possibly the 90s) the great Waylon Jennings skewered the country music quislings who were so willing to sell out the authenticity of country music, for a pat on the head from the rest of the music industry and critics. He paid homage to Hank Williams, and wondered what he would think of the wrong turn Nashville was making.

it is subjective, if you liked rap in the 80's and 90's and hate the rap today, kinda like that. I do not hate all modern country, I just think that it has become to poppy, to cookie cutter. The good artist use to write there own song's and now days not so much.

That's a good question, "What is country?" And just as importantly, what is NOT country?
I'll answer it the way that famous West Virginia newspaperman Jim Comstock, who once had the ear of US Presidents and others, said about how to define pornography.
He said, "I can't define it. But I know it when I see it."
I can't define country music. But I know it when I hear it.
It's probably a bit like when black people, or white people for that matter, see white people..."dancing". Versus black people..at least the ones on Soul Train in the 70s. Or what black people mean when they say "sangin" versus "singing".
I was raised in the country. I know the music when I hear it. And Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan, and their ilk...ain't it!!
If the rappers had called their type of ahem..."music" (?)..."Today's Hot New Rhythm and Blues". Would that make it R&B, just because they wanted to call rap the new version of R&B?
I'm so glad they came up with their own name for "rap", rather than doing like the music industry did, when they changed the format of country music to something else that is inferior to it in every way, and started in the 80s calling it "Today's Hot New Country". Which was disgraceful. Especially to us who like REAL country, and can tell the difference between real country, and the garbage that Nashville has substituted in its place, for the past few decades.
Just like you (and I) can tell the difference between rap and R&B, quite easily, and not ever get the two different genres confused, I and other country music fans can easily tell the difference between Today's Hot New Country, and real country music. There's every bit as much difference as between rap and R&B. And I suspect, between singing and "sangin'". And between the white people dancing in, let's say, the movie Back To The Future, and the kids in Soul Train in the 70s.
