- R2D2 takes his first steps! The first part was printed more than 3 years ago, but today R2 got rolling for the first time.
First impressions:
- The motors are zippy! I was barely providing forward throttle - I will likely make some code changes to limit the motors and slow him down a bit.
- Left/right motion is reversed. Pretty sure I need to swap the connections at the motor controller to fix this. Forward/back works as expected.
- He handled the bumps really well and most importantly, the breaker switch DID NOT get tripped from typical use.
Overall, a very successful first test. I won't have any updates for the next week, as I'll be away, but he's in good shape for his first public outing in Fair Haven, Vermont on Friday, July 15.

Been making my way through your videos as I want to start this build in the next year or so, and just have to say this came out amazing! I got a good laugh out of the neighbor in the background opening and shutting the car door to pay attention to what you wre doing lol

What !!!! Thats amazing 👏 my to do list just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Right now I'm working on the Mandalorian suit I'm almost done printing everything and it's taken me almost 3 months how long have you been working on this amazing machine
The first parts for the dome were printed in February, 2019 - so it's been over 3 years since I started! There were stretches where not much got done - it's easy to get burned out - but regardless, I'm definitely on the slow end of the spectrum compared to many builders. Mando armor would be a fun project, I imagine. Good luck with that!

I will for sure. I too am curious how much runtime I'll get. I've also been thinking about getting one of these: dakotalithium.com/product/victron-smart-shunt-500a-50mv-bluetooth-battery-monitor/ Another builder on astromech has one and loves it. It's a bit pricey but the ability to have real-time data on battery status is compelling.
@@jasonsR2D2 Oh yeah, that would be huge. Nice little upgrade to add in down the line for sure. I've hemorrhaged a lot on this build already, time to slow down a little and pace myself some lol

Are you running two master board.?
Not yet. Just the master/slave combo in the dome. I think I've decided to create a "daughter" electronics board that will take 24v from the main board and step it down to what is needed for the body marcduino, servos, lights, and some extras including a trading card dispenser, etc. Some of that will happen this summer, for sure.
Are you thinking of building any other projects?
I still have lots of bells and whistles to add to this guy, so he's "operational", but not "complete". I am thinking of building a Chopper from Mr. Baddeley's files eventually. That one has a lot of character and personality, too.
