  • Actually I just wanted to make a Malaysian Street Food Vlog in Chulia Street in Penang and have a pretty relaxed evening. And it was indeed a fun time. And this video is about food as well. The taste was super delicious. But there was one waiter who was extremely rude to me.

      Apparently the girl who took order was not Malaysian but a foreign worker properly from other south east Asia country. She didn’t get what you want and misunderstood that you didn’t want to order any drinks. So she call the man, properly the boss of the coffee shop to handle when there is customers refuse to order drinks. She passed the wrong message to the man, that’s why the man seemed very unfriendly at first.

    There are so many comments trying to rationalize this situation. But bad experience is bad experience. We can't attempt to deny Carlos feeling and expect every tourist to know all the unspoken rules. This is not even something that can be studied on tourist leaflet. Please be kind and acknowledge the bad experience our tourist has had. If we are being defensive, we will stop thinking how to improve our hospitability.

    😂😂 I think this situations is a funny one..both are having miscommunication which involves WORD PLAY..This situation happen because the girl thoughts Carlos didn't want to order when he said 'NUTMEG DRINK' because she might understand and heard it as 'NOT MAKE DRINK'..that is why she pointed out the rules..at this point she might think U are rude by telling her to not make a drink so that is why she pass it to the man..but the man I think also understand U as the girl did which is 'NOT MAKE DRINK' thus he thought that U didn't want to follow the rules and he also might think that U are rude on keep repeating not making drink for U when U actually said 'NUTMEG DRINK' so he started to said U need to go outside if U don't want to drink..only then the man seem to understand after U point it out on the menu..that is why the man started to speak in lower tone and treat U nice and friendly in the end. I think this only happen because of the 'NUTMEG DRINK' order. It might be different if U order others drink.

I mean I don't expect being treated like a king and that's not the point. But it can be a pretty good move to get some more customers in the best case. Or even many more customers. The more tourist-popular and business competitive a location is, the more common such practice will be becomes. I have visited Malay/Mamak restaurants in Malaysia that has the similar rule. On the other hand, I would also say such rule is not as common in Malay/Mamak restaurants because both foods and drinks are operated by the same owners.

    What I hate about Penang is you have to order from A or B in order to sit down and enjoy your food. When you ordered some food, the drink stall would force you to get some otherwise you can't sit. They are in this together which I find it super lame. If the same situation happened with me and the waiter here, I would be pissed as well. I'm an overseas Malaysian and I do feel you bro.

      @baddoggi4238 Foods and drinks are usually not under the same business operators in most coffee shops setup in Malaysia. The drinks are usually sold by the coffee shop owners who supply the space and tables and chairs, also rent out the stall to different food hawkers. Being able to make a few bucks here and there from customers who eat there is part of their small business operations. Each country has its own culture and ways of doing things. While I would agree the local business owner should have acted a little "friendlier", but as tourist, it is also important for one to under the cultural differences and ways of how locals do things. Isn't that is part of traveling?

      I saw one Penang woman taking her Singaporean friends to look for 'good food' in a Penang street. She took them to buy some noodles and bungkus them and took her friend all the way to a coffee shop so that they could sit down and it. The coffee shop is not a public park. The owner has to pay rent and electricity and water bills (you can use its toilet). Therefore, she and her Singaporean friends had to buy drinks from that coffee shop. The coffee shop needs to earn money to exist or else people would have to stand and it and pee where?

      What can I say. Vlogging in Malaysia makes rather economically sense if you have a huge audience that keeps watching your videos wherever you go. Most of the locals usually only watch content from their own country. I think people from 1st world countries don't care that much about their own country. For example I wouldn't watch an Indonesian guy traveling in Germany. But I would maybe watch him traveling in 3rd world countries if he is has a cool personality. I am a penangite. I think you misjudged that gentleman who you claim was rude. He was not rude but unfortunately he was scolded by you for nothing. Firstly, let me explained to you. In Penang, the coffee shop/restaurant and the hawkers that sell he food are totally different person. The hawkers(sub tenant) rent the place from the shop(main tenant) to sell their food. They don't sell drinks. Drinks you have to order from the shop. You can say they are different entity.The first and the second attempts you ordered your drink from the food seller/hawker. Since they sell only food they did not bother to take your drink order. The third attempt you ordered your drink from a young girl who don't understand what drink you want maybe from your different pronouciation of the drink. Your fourth and fifth attempt was from that unlucky waiter whom you misjudged him as rude. From what I see is he tried his very best to be nice to you but unfortunately you release your frustrations on him by raising your voice. Anyhow he still recommended you the ambla Juice which you claimed was nice. Maybe you should thank him instead of misjudging him. Another point I would like to highlight to you is that in Penang there are certain coffee shops/restaurant( main tenant )who charge a certain fee for those customers who don't ordered drinks from them. The reason is that you occupied their tables/chairs and they don't earn anything from you. They have to pay rental for their shop and if you don't ordered any drinks from them they don't earn anything from you.

    Hi there Carlos. Just as local Malaysian from KL like a me who had worked and stayed there. My best advice is stay clear of eating at those coffee shops insisting to ordering drinks over there. Instead you could just do a takeout and head to somewhere else. Honestly, I can tell you that there is no such thing as to force a customer/tourist to order drinks in KL or even in JB. The only sign you will see at most is no outside food, but a must to order drink is uncalled for. This coffeeshop owners are just too bloody profit oriented and they care less about the quality of service. Lastly, do visit places where locals eat and try to avoid touristy food places cause you will later notice the overprice differences.

So using that kind of logic,if ppl go to his restaurant and not ordering from his restaurant ,the owner can't earn money for himself and his employee.
      if u think a guy doing his business earning money is rude then it is also rude that yt guy calls him out like that and being like how some ppl in Twitter trying to "cancel "ppl right? There are way worse thing human do and this blue shirt guy who don't understand a yt guy saying nutmeg with a wrong pronunciation until he pointed it out(not hating just stating ppl there read it as nut meg not nootmeg) and thought he said he drank a nutmeg juice before arriving there so he doesn't want a drink
      In the end ,yt guy ordered another type of drink and everything was calm again so why posting and hating on someone who u alrdy just solve the prob?

    This is quite common and it is not something new or exclusive to this restaurant...

      @@harris4874 Yes Brother, I understand, but having traveled so much "The Tourist" should have been able to understand and adjust to the dynamics of a fast paced normal, street side local Coffee Shop... Most coffee shops/ restaurants depend on their peak hours to make the most money and in order to do that, they have to be fast and efficient and they need all the customers to order as fast as possible. If they are out of Nutmeg Juice, the customer should quickly choose another drink option instead of wasting the owner's time by occupying the seat of another potential customer...
      I'm not trying to be rude, but a little understanding from the tourist would have solved this issue...
      Having said that, the lady who tried to take the order initially did seem a little too agitated and impatient which might have triggered such a reaction from the Tourist in the first place...
      In this case, the lady should have been more polite and welcoming instead of being so agitated and unwelcoming... I say it's a mistake on both sides...

    Tourist should come to visit Sarawak. You will feel the difference in courtesy, polite and friendly attitude where you hang around compare to penang. I agreed that most of them doing business with a rude and unfriendly way. Everything is about money. This is the only state in Malaysia that you should not consider for holidays. Rude, bad attitude and you are forced to purchase drinks or else you need to pay for entrance fee even you order food but yet serve you with the unwelcome behaviour. This will not happen to Sarawak at all. You will love Sarawak after your visiting. Food is much cheaper and people here are courtesy and you are freely to sit anywhere without paying anything and always being welcome without paying anything when entering any food parade here. No one will force you to purchase any food or drinks. No crap policies like penang. Should boycott visiting Penang food parade. Teach them a lesson when they don’t have business.

    This happened to me in Penang too when I visited in 2017. I only ordered food. Did not want to order a drink- but the drinks guy was pissed. I had a medical condition which meant I could only drink sterilised water- which I drank from my water bottle- which I sterilised every evening……I was super paranoid about eating and drinking in Georgetown- I had never seen so many rats in my life! The food tasted good- but the rats really put me off my food….

    • @bloggerhock
      @bloggerhock 8 месяцев назад +4

      I am sorry to hear about your medical condition. But to be fair and honest, foods and drinks are usually not under the same business operators in most coffee shops setup in Malaysia. The drinks are usually sold by the coffee shop owners who supply the space and tables and chairs, also rent out the stall to different food hawkers. Being able to make a few bucks here and there from customers who eat there is part of their small business operations. Just sharing that so you are aware and understand the cultural differences, And if you are concerned about the hygiene of street foods or hawkers, and I would also suggest you go to more established dine-in restaurants or fast foods. There are plenty of such options in Penang/Malaysia.

    People defending the owner are missing the bigger picture. Yes, there was a miscommunication, but phrases like "I don't care" and "you can leave" are harsh, regardless of Carlos's accent. It's possible the owner's tone was rude too. We're overanalyzing the details when the main issue is clear: the owner lacked empathy and treated the situation like a routine business interaction without considering the feelings involved.
    You can't use such dismissive language with someone from a different cultural background and expect it to go over well. Defending this behavior often stems from a sense of national pride and wanting to feel superior. By downplaying this incident, you're inadvertently supporting similar future situations. Who knows how many customers like Carlos have faced this kind of treatment?
    I'm Malaysian too and to me, the owner was more severe comparing with Carlos.
    Even when Owner realized his mistake and when Carlos confronted him why he was rude, you can clearly see Owner just emotioned " I don't know "

  • @jasonli991
    @jasonli991 7 месяцев назад +1

    It's merely a misunderstanding. Since English is not their native language, it's helpful to speak slowly and use complete sentences. For instance, saying "I want to order a nutmeg juice" will ensure clarity, as the word "nutmeg" may sound like other words, causing confusion.
