I really love the Il-76............. looks like a beast, and the oldest versions sound like it too......... Back in the 90s the older versions flown very often to Rotterdam Airport....... (Not)Occasionally they arrived during night time.........windows open or windows closed...........the Il-76 didn't care what you did...........it literally screamed you out of bed.. A couple of times I noticed that many neighbors open their curtains or blinds a bit, and then looked outside with a rather bewildered face.... Upon arrival during the day you could see its impressive appearance (and plumes of smoke) coming from afar. And the often overloaded and therefore low-flying departures made our double-glazed windows shaking like a straw.... Great memories!!! I'm glad to have a couple of wonderful looking scale models of it........

This aircraft is a combination of best 2 worlds! A combination of the best Soviet effectiveness of the simplicity and reliability and the best of the modern digital technology! And that in combination gives you one of the best military aircraft in the world if not THE BEST!!! If I was in charge of equipment of the military of my countrys army, I would definitely choose all that Mother Russia can offer! Second best army in Ukraine that is ;-) Psssst....Army = ground, Navy = surface of water (Ok, Russian navy in black sea = Special military ops below surface units like Moscow etc.), and finally (this is kind of important), Airforce = Metal birds that fly around in the air. If its got dark brown or black trails coming out of the engines at all levels, its typically a Russian plane like this. If not, its prob +30 year more modern western planes, but still airforce. If your army fly in planes, what should that poor airforce of yours do? oh, perhaps helicopters operating below surface as seen in Ukraine too? 🤔

I am sure they could replace the missing Airbuses and Boeings, which have they grounded due to a lack of spare parts. Finally, they would ensure safer transportation of passengers.
Such a modern update, including a crew member whose role is just to start and control the engines. Let's not forget the crew member there to perform the role of a flight management computer. Talk about a great way to keep people employed! And let's be honest, if it wasn't for the Russian Airforce it's unlikely there would even be an aircraft to update at all!
It's a military plane, not a military transport. Other than redundancy, the extra crew members split the "aviate, navigate, communicate" principle between the crew, which is important in case you're landing, having technical issues, or navigating in the war zone.
Dated 70's Soviet design, Heavy as in no composites in wing and fuselage design, Noisy, Thirsty relatively low powered PS90 engines by todays standards and a 4/5 man crew to operate it! Low payload compared to others and a range that is nothing to shout about. Plus point's, Reliable, Rugged and Straight forward to maintain due to it's relative simplicity, It will never sell in the West but suit's developing country's with low budget's for transport aircraft.
It's a GORGEOUS PLANE!!! One of the best military examples from Mother Russia!! You won't find a better military transporter aircraft for you money and most importantly, it won't let you down when you having to rely on the task given to it!! It's surprising that a modernized variant of a strategic airlifter would be sold for export without eliminating the flight engineer and navigator roles. I wonder whether this is influenced more by requirements of the export markets, by the constraints of the program itself, or by constraints outside of the program.
I will repeat that again: - Flight engineer is responsible for many aircraft mechanical/electric systems, not just for the flight. - Radio operator is not just a radio operator, but the EW system operator as well. The Western pilots/officers are more expensive. The Russian ideology is to have unified crew 'family' of multi-functional officers. The Western ideology is to attach required dedicated specialized officers according to a task. ------------ It's difference in the approach, ideology, point of view, traditions, regulations/documents mostly, not in the technical requirements/limitations (of the plane itself).

china couldn't get enough of earlier version, they got old reconditioned one, but now they got their Y20 now. work horse of many airforce.

It's surprising that a modernized variant of a strategic airlifter would be sold for export without eliminating the flight engineer and navigator roles.
I wonder whether this is influenced more by requirements of the export markets, by the constraints of the program itself, or by constraints outside of the program.
I will repeat that again:
- Flight engineer is responsible for many aircraft mechanical/electric systems, not just for the flight.
- Radio operator is not just a radio operator, but the EW system operator as well. For the military versions...
- Do not compare civilian cargo planes with military ones. At all, it's just wrong!
At the basis, it is a military airplane, at first...
70's technology is Russia's strength. If you indoctrinate the population during +20 years to believe it's a worlds best, you got a...worlds best ;-)

I've read your replies to others and to me it looks like you're saying that Russian military air crew stay with their specific aircraft, while Western military air crew switch aircraft depending on their mission, and that there are still tasks on the military aircraft which a human is more sensitive to and more proficient with compared to an automated system. Is that the approach and understanding of Russian military aviation?

- Russians prefer to have unified multi-functional crew with officers for different tasks, even combined.
- USA/NATO prefer to assign dedicated officers for a flight with specific tasks, for ex., cargo officers or special role officer.
- Yes, the IL-76 aircraft roles can be different, the aircraft itself can be reconfigured for different task: cargo plane, paratroopers, fire extinguishing, flying hospital, etc.
- Russians can allow to have larger crews themselves. The Western pilots/officers are more expensive. The Russian ideology is to have unified crew 'family' of multi-functional officers. The Western ideology is to attach required dedicated specialized officers according to a task.

It's difference in the approach, ideology, point of view, traditions, regulations/documents mostly, not in the technical requirements/limitations (of the plane itself).
