  • RWBY has tons of characters, but how should Rooster Teeth handle the main cast themselves, and their supporting characters?

    Jaune repeating Pyrrha's story is just stupid tbh. Jaune shouldn't have his story constantly bogged down by that one death which happened years ago. It would be more cathartic to see Jaune grow beyond that and finally get over it. No one needs another rehash of Pyrrha's death.

    • @budgetbrick5124
      @budgetbrick5124 Год назад +11

      Honestly why the writers have jaune of all people still having grief over Pyrrha while nora and ren are completely fine is really mind boggling. They had the same amount of time as jaune though I can at least say jaune was the closest to her.
      And volumes 6 have them say they still miss her doesn't count because they had 6 to 8 months to hash it out but now of all days they finally talk about.

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 5 месяцев назад

      Penny's death in V8 feels like a rehash of Pyrrha's death from V3. As well as Weiss' near death from V5 but only this time Jaune fails. Even if there was no time to heal Penny, it's still dumb. It would've made more sense if Jaune's Aura was at zero and without it, he can't use his Semblance until his Aura recharges. This way there would definitely be no time to heal her with or without his Semblance. Penny put herself AND the Relic at risk to protect her friends, which is noble, but she jeopardized the mission. She didn't put the needs of the many before the needs of the few. She lost herself and the Relic. The Maiden powers may be in good hands, but they were no longer important. The Relic is what Salem wanted and now she's just two steps ahead of her goal.

    I main issue with them is how they’re actually extremely toxic, narcissistic and can NEVER admit that they’re wrong or have done wrong. Even if it gets close, someone else comes along and says something along the lines of “well you’re trying!” As if it negates the wrongdoings lol
    Even in V9.. they all mainly doubled down with the exception of ruby and Jaune.
    It’s so blatant how hard the writers want you to root for rwby but don’t have enough common sense to realize that they indirectly make them come off as unlikeable because they made loads of mistakes yet the show bends a knee to coddle them

    • @kidprime6863
      @kidprime6863 5 месяцев назад

      Well the problem with V9 was that it was a production nightmare. It suffered many rewrites and went through 2-3 year delays due to the ongoing pandemic. Combined with them getting caught up in other projects and employees getting fired for various reasons. It was supposed to be twelve episodes long before it got trimmed down to ten episodes instead. It's essentially the Duke Nukem Forever of RWBY.
      Hell, the heroines barely had a chance to process what happened while they were in Ever After. Ruby included. They barely had a chance to rest thanks to one problem after another.

      @@kidprime6863 Yet they did get rest? I don’t wanna hear about the production problems and rewrites because the issues I discussed are WRITING issues. At its core, it’s the writing. These were issues that have been plaguing the show since V6 lol.
      The problem was that RWBY was being driven by talentless hacks. Rude to say but I’m sorry it’s true. I still remember Mike’s tweet about how the writing for V9 was done prior to V8 ending lol. I didn’t hear about rewrites. Maybe they should stop lying.

      @@summerking-wq1sd The pacing issues have been a problem since V4. Looking back at V4 I was like "Slow the hell down! You're giving the viewers heart attacks!". The pacing is also preventing the show's story from taking a break. That's why arcs such as Yang's PTSD feel rushed. The lack of downtime prevents the show taking a moment to breathe and allow new viewer time to catch up. Downtime gives characters time to shine and expand upon the show's world. They shouldn't have ditched the episodic formula they had going on with V1-V2 too soon. The writers on putting too much effort on the plot then everything else. I get that the plot is important but it you don't slow down a notch or take a break, you're going to reach a dead end and a writers block. They'll only do the character arcs and expand upon the show's world and lore unless the plot demands it. If it doesn't, then it can't be done. Same goes for the "Tell don't show" problem.

      Youre not wrong, but The problems with this line of thinking start to show up when you realize that in the earlier volumes, they either didn't make mistakes worth looking over, or the consequences of their actions happened immediately and were resolved after, and in the later volumes they either didn't have time to look back or their mistakes were not obvious to them at the time, and they made the best decisions they thought they could. You want the characters to be be both perfect and flawed at the same time, and when you were given reflective scenes, you complained that it was filler or they didn't matter because the characters "didnt change." Learning from your mistakes and growing as a person does not mean changing who you are. It means changing what you do and how you act.

    • @summerking-wq1sd
      @summerking-wq1sd 10 месяцев назад +3

      @@devariojohns Dude there’s flawed and then there’s unknowingly making your characters unlikable. That crap applied to the earlier volumes yeah. But not anymore. The show literally has a meme of bending the knee to them every time to paint them as the good guys despite not always being in the right.
      Also there’s been SO MUCH time they could reflect. Heck even in THIS very volume. But they don’t!. No one does except Ruby and Jaune. Weiss kind of, yang and Blake literally couldn’t care less about anything other than eachother. The show literally pointed to it with the storm that actively makes you face your problems.
      Filler isn’t bad if it helps develop the characters. RWBY does a terrible job across the board with this. That’s why so many people don’t even consider the 8 of them real actual friends and more so adventuring acquaintances.
      Bro RWBY could be taught in college as a highlight of writing mistakes. Imo it started on V6 with Ruby’s terrible speech about not needing adults to come save them or tell them what to do.. when they were actively saved and protected by an adult and are actively heading in the direction another adult gave them 😂

      @@devariojohns What do you mean?. Countless examples of the show bending a knee to them. They disagreed with ironwood and vilified him for actions they themselves later do. Shout out to amity arena. It’s bad when he wants to do but no one says a word about the irony of them doing it. Winter blaming mantle’s breaking point about marshal law on ironwood when it was LTIERALLY HER IDEA lol.. she pushed for it, and I’m betting 100 dollars that you didn’t even know that lol.. no one does. Yang being a hypocrite when it came to secrets, team rwby complaining about any plan they don’t agree with yet never offer any alternatives. Weiss doing nothing to repair the relationship with her brother, he did it all because if she had, it would involve her admitting that she was also in the wrong for not seeing that the youngest child who is abandoned by the other two are going to move closer to the parent, how convenient that a literal magical lamp had to save the city.. a plan Team RWBY didn’t think of. Thank god Ozpin came back to bail them out. I mean ruby, Weiss, and Blake were exhausted from holding the front lines, or battling Grimm to save lives.. oh they actually weren’t. They sat around drinking tea during a war lol. How convenient that they all had to stay for Nora.
      V6. Ruby’s speech about not needing any adults or being told what to do. Qrow had been taking down the waves of Grimm behind their backs for months, saved them from Tyrian who would have killed them all lol. There was no hope. So yes.. they needed adults. Even at the time they were only going to Atlas because Ozpin told them to. She’s literally going in the direction an adult told her. The self awareness is completely non existent in the writing and it bleeds into the characters, thus making them unlikable. Especially in a show like RWBY when they want you to firmly believe the girls have the moral high ground when they don’t. I would say V9 challenged this.. but it didn’t lol.. not really.
      Idk I just think it’s insanely self righteous to brand a person evil because he’s making the hard choice of leaving a few to try and save the many.. when in V9.. team rwby run away and let people die to defend THEM for their escape.
      How are they not friends??.. hey when was the last time Blake and Jaune had a real conversation about anything honestly lol?.. I’m talking the ENTIRETY of the show lol.. scratch that.. what about Blake and RUBY.. I’m sure if I counted, they have less than 50 speaking lines directed towards each other.. in 9 seasons lol.
      Team JNRP feels like a family. Because they all actively talk to eachother. Team RWBY honestly doesn’t. Especially post V3. Which is hilarious because a lot of people hated Ice Queendom but the one thing it did better undoubtedly was the character writing. Team RWBY are constantly talking to eachother and unlike the OG show, it’s not 90% about the plot when they do.

    Honestly, I think someone who feels bad about doing something but STILL does it, is more f up in the head that someone who simply doesn't have a moral compass to understand he's doing something wrong.
    Both can be redeemed if they want to tho, since one already has the incentive, and the other one just needs to see things from another's perspective or recieve said incentive.
    In Mercury's case, he already cares about Emerald, even if they fight from time to time (Majorly because of their relationship with Cinder and their clashing views of her) So him joining up the good guys to... Ya know, not end up dead, and help Emerald not end up dead too, it could just be him doing something for someone else for the first time, and growing to care about the others too in due time.
    I hope that they let him enter the group, since Emerald had a bigger role in killing Penny the first time and the whole Fall of Beacon.

  • @Burscutum
    @Burscutum Год назад +14

    This is very bias because Mercury is my hands down favorite character in RWBY but! I don't believe it's fair to count him out on the "redemption" thing solely because he wasn't resourceful about fucking Beacon over.
    I think a lot of it stems back to his fucked up childhood. His dad was an alcoholic mercenary who took his semblance away and had a fight to the death with [resulting in Mercury losing both his legs]
    Yes, he's twisted, but that's literally all he's ever known. Going from that to Cinders gang doesn't inspire much faith in me that he even would remotely understand compassion.
    Despite that, he looks out for Emerald, he warns her that Cinder doesn't care about her and they need to do as their told to stay safe with Salem. He's not like Tyrian who's loyal to the mission, he's doing whatever it takes to keep himself alive in a world that's only ever fucked him.
    I personally wouldn't WANT Mercury to be "redeemed" mostly cause I think he would lose if not all, then most of his character and individuality if he were to join the hive mind of team Good Guys, but I dont think it's fair to put him in the same category as Cinder 🤷‍♀️

    Yeah your thoughts on redemption are still wrong. You don't need to be remorseful to earn redemption. Thats the FINAL phase of redemption. The writer has to make the character go through a journey to get to that point and this can be done for anyone. Mercury and even Cinder Fall can still be redeemed even after what they've done. Yes what they've done is horrible but the WHOLE POINT of redemption is characters doing horrible things but still being able to come back from it.

      @jonnjones8263 Год назад +2

      @Hanna Fontenay Thats not the case at all. There are characters who have done FAR worse than Cinder and still have gotten redemption. So again *no* her deeds do not exempt her from redemption.
      Regardless of "when" they feel regret it is NOT a requirement to start a redemption arc. Period. Thats not how change works. Like I said, no one wants to change at first. It happens gradually until they are begrudgingly forced to accept their old beliefs and prior actions were wrong. No redemption is not inherently about atoning. Thats only a small part of it. Redemption is about the character changing into someone better. They don't always have to atone or even can atone but they make the change to be better regardless.

    • @jonnjones8263
      @jonnjones8263 Год назад +1

      @Hanna Fontenay Again no. The definition of the word and how it's ACTUALLY used in storytelling are two different things. A character growing and changing for the better is redeemed by the story.
      Are you kidding? Nothing I said was contradictory. Remorse usually happens towards the end of their arc when they're ready to change but it doesn't matter when they feel it because a redemption arc ultimately doesn't need it to start with. What part of that is confusing? lol.
      Like for example Rurouni Kenshin's redemption arc starts with remorse while someone like Darth Vader's redemption arc ends with it. Again, it doesn't matter when remorse starts because the story will ultimately get them to that point when it wants them to change.
