I always carry a dental floss roll( in the plastic holder) with a few needles in it for a repair kit. It works well and dental floss is waxed, so its good for tent and rain jacket repair.
interesting bit about the haversack. They were originally bags for food rations. Haver from Havre (norse and west germanic) meaning Oats. Literally Oat Bag.
A good lightweight useful haversack kit! I have several, I go to the fleamarkets, pow wows and mid-evil type festivals here in Fl to find old style tan leather, blankets and gear. I got several leather pouches, flint and steel, knives, Axes, old guns, and bags at those places cheap. great video Dan and I like the oilskin haversack like you have there!
I have a haversack like yours and I’ve made a little modification. Since anything that is placed in the top pocket will typically fall out when I open it, I’ve sewn Velcro on the inside of the pocket so that I can seal it. Since doing this, I haven’t loss anything. Skillet
I ll be honest whit you sir. Finally some one that understand the usage of a harver sac. Too manny people carry too much gear ( 3 fire kit and a secont shelter ) in that bag. Tkx you.
Very sensible haversack kit, I carry similar but with the addition of a head torch. I use a Black Dianond Cosmo, useful for if you are caught out in the dark for some reason. You can use it to look for firewood after sunset and as a signalling device if you are injured and need help. Many people try to carry too much in a haver, you have got it right.
I am more a Backpack person myself, but you have a Nice Kit, I did notice the Oil Skin Cloth to sit and wrap stuff in, and I use a Small piece of foam but when I saw yours I got a thought... Cut it in a Large Circle can still fold easy, But Run Some 550 Cord or something along the outside edge as a Draw String so you can draw it up into a Bag. got to get me some spare Oil Cloth now 8)
Brilliant. Love the ditty bag contents... once I start doing videos again I’ll be showing my haversack that I’m currently still finishing but it’s one of a kind and I think folks will appreciate it. You e given me good ideas for additions to it so thank you!
Great video thanks. I just purchased an xl haversack and a roll top tinder bag from Campcraft Outdoors and I’m definitely gonna use this video to help with put my haversack kit together
I always have my belt knife and a small chopper with me, usually my pipe hawk. I stitched two short lengths of paracord about four inches apart to the strap of my haversack that rests across my back. I can then attach my hawk to the strap and carry it easily out of the way. It also makes it handy to hang the whole package off of a branch when I stop to keep everything together and within arms reach. If I don't have the hawk for whatever reason, I just wrap the cords around the strap and tie them off to keep them out of the way. It's been my most useful mod. I've been thinking of adding another pair to the front to possibly attach a small neck knife... we'll see, but I've really grown fond of carrying my hawk this way.
Great stuff I carried one since I was a teen most of the same items in mine I also had some brass pre tied snare wire ( multiple uses ) a sealed tin of matches (. 50 yrs ago no one heard of the faro rods lol)a small tin of medical supplies bandaids compress and gauze some orange flagging tape , xlarge garbage bag and a tin with small hooks and fishing line as we have so many lakes and streams in my area of northern Ontario Canada 💙🇨🇦 99% of stuff I never used but it was there if stuff went wrong ..in winter I added two flat round rocks about 4 inches in diameter to heat up in a small fire to use as hand pocket warmers when ice fishing or overnight camping ( I used these a fair bit )
Nowadays, EDC. Back in them days, a "Possumle" bag. I used to call it a "Possibles Bag" on account of it Carrie's every thing "Possible". Found out that were wrong. An olde timer I knew told me it is actually named after the Oppossum, on account of it is the onliest critter smart enough to have his own pocket! Henceforth and wheretofore it should be called a "Possumle Bag"
Nice and senseful Haversack. Love the repair kit, that's a thing I still planing about... I'd carry less fatwood (that's a big amount of it), a foldable candle lantern (Swiss army, 350g) and some fittin' candles (stearine, 40g each) of course my Katadyn Pocket water filter (500g) 1 or 2 foldable water bags (2l Platypus, 100g each) a piece (2-3oz) of salt stone and some peppercorns, wrapped in beeswax-soaked cotton fabric some Cleenex (also for cleaning my glasses, 100g) Silky Pocket Boy (500g) and a small hatchet (600g)
So as I sit here enjoing these vids, I feel as if I'm at home in the Appalachian mountains of our great state of PA, however I began to wonder...how much it would take to spend a year under you learning everything you know. I know some but not as extensively as must of the guys in this field and always want to learn more...hmmm food for thought. take care brother
I'm already really considering it especially after the realization your school is less than 2 hours away from me, plus I camp in Pottsville frequently...just not sure which to take or start with
Why bankline instead of Kevlar cord? It doesn’t smell, is strong, doesn’t melt, barely catches fire. ;) This question brought to you by the Kevlar Advertising Board. Buy Kevlar!
Btw: I click that I like a video to record that I have watched it. Just don't get a big head about it. Good video. P.S. I was out in my woods recently, realized I don't see many bushcrafters have a little trowel and small roll of toilet paper. Sure Corporals Corner shows digging latrines large enough for patrol.
Great video Dan, one more question for you. When do you foresee getting more of the Coalcracker haversacks in stock? Thanks in advance and also thanks for getting back to me on the belt pouch and knife sheath mod for using a large fire steel ……Ed

It’s the same stuff they make artificial sinew from,
It’s good stuff
interesting bit about the haversack. They were originally bags for food rations. Haver from Havre (norse and west germanic) meaning Oats. Literally Oat Bag.
In hungarian, it is literally called bread bag
Tusen takk
'Haver' is also Dutch for 'Oat'. and 'Sack' is 'Zak' They are used as bags for horse fodder
Feedbag. Just strap it to the mouth of your mule.

Any specific titles?
Thanks for your time keep it coming God bless you
