Of those that know him, the vast majority of those people probably can't name a movie he's done besides Godfather. Everyone knows a President's children. Her parents are too famous to pull this off. If you want to avoid nepotism, you have to use your privileges for something greater, like for a cause like his suggestion of speaking out for Julian Assange. He's in danger of being extradited for uncovering war crimes by the US in the illegal invasion of Iraq. Horrible timing since the US is criticizing Russia for its illegal war. With Great power comes great responsibility, not with great power, try to disguise that you have great power by hiding your background of power.

I’m glad that she is taking her own path and not riding her parent’s coattails.
I wish her the best in her career but anyone who has famous parents is definitely getting a boost. I doubt she strictly got the internships with Harvey Weinstein on her own merits (he used to be a Democratic donor bundler) and Donald Glover’s Atlanta. She definitely got into Harvard because of her father (they have legacy admissions which weighs heavily into acceptance). There’s no point in running away from who she is. Embrace it and live her life.

Nepotism is not about the name but the connections you have and the shortcuts enabled by it. She can call herself whatever but the connections are still there. If she’s qualified for the job and turns out to be good, regardless of connections she still deserves the recognition and opportunities. People should mind their own business. I went to duke and some of my classmates were the children of pretty famous ppl. the parents didn't even have to intervene. it was ppl volunteering themselves to help or connect, believing they could get access to the person's parents by being nice to / acquainted with the children. names alone do a lot but i understand your point

Writers, actors and musicians have professional names they use for their work/craft all the time. It's not breaking news. I think it's good that she doesn't want her famous name to be what draws people to her work but just the quality of it. Pretty sure that character and integrity is a reflection of who her parents are.

I get Sunny's point but I think in many cases people that benefit from nepotism want the benefits associated with it (financial support, connections) but don't want the stigma attached (in this case, affluent name). As someone who works in an industry where many of my peers benefitted from nepotism, I personally have a hard time understanding how I fit in when I have to work much harder and take less interesting opportunities so I can pay the bills. Malia can do whatever she wants but I think my point is a valid counterpoint! Beyond that, who am I to tell a black woman that she shouldn't move forward in the world and benefit from her generational wealth! The Obama family deserves that.

One more example: it's no one's business how other people want to be called. What ego people have to think they are the arbiters of someone else's name. It just occurred to me: that's the same sense of entitlement that drives people to decide not to call "foreigners" by "strange" names, or not to learn how to pronounce their names.

I get it with Malia, she is very smart young lady. I know we tend to focus on the negative, but I do believe it is a very small percentage in her case, there will always be that, the majority wins in this case. Working in the federal sector I got so many compliments about my work, then I saw two negative comments and it crushed me because I forgot about those positive comments. I was so young and my manager came up to be and said you got over 90 percent of the employees loving your work and that’s a passing score, forget about the negative sayers you are doing your best work. It took me a while to get there but as I got older I understood. That passing score puts you over the top. Mali is paving her own way and that’s a smart move on her part.❤❤❤❤❤
