If that was really "the entire movie" it would hardly have been worth watching. What makes it work is the high degree of acceptance everyone else in the film gives to the relationship as it develops -- there's no demonstrable homophobia in it.

@@bubbeline8217 Nobody giving instructions doesn't equal improvisation. Regina Cheng do you mean when the door slams? It's him motioning, more or less, "fuck, fuck fuck! we're not supposed to make noise and the fucking door slammed!" Armie's snicker was real! in that scene bc what Timothée did was entirely improvised. Timothée said in the commentary, that the door slam was a gift. Totally not planned.
Uhm, not in the script, but in the book. Although it isn’t saying directly, Aciman is such a wise novelist to create a phrase that is purely imaginable to readers, YES, what Elio did is what exactly trying to say in the book.
Very impressive yes. I am looking forward to his new role as a drug addict on meth. He had to lose 20 pounds which sounds insane because that would put his weight like at 95 pounds lol
What I love about Timmy's Elio is that he reminds me, and probably you guys too, of me when I was around that age - all the self-discovery, experimentation, these confusing/conflicting emotions, and oh god the raging, uhm, hormones. He is so...human. I love it.
The whole film was soooooooo human. That's why it's pierced such a delicate part of my heart, and the fact I've watched this film more than 20 times, nearly once every week.
His choice to look right into the camera and then look away is just brilliant. Like he's ashamed because you, as a viewer, saw him cry. This guy is a stunning actor.
That moment at the end where Elio momentarily stares straight at the camera, I felt him staring deep into my soul ... I love all these improvisations so much, my heart could burst ❤️
The part where the door slams and he freaks out is amazing to me. Seems so real, we all had moments when we were young sneaking around trying to be as quite as possible

Important: Oliver’s red trunks scene was indeed in the book, but Elio’s movements and body language were improvised by Timothée! It seems improvised because the actors worked really hard to make it as natural and realistic as possible. :) It's actually suuuper hard to improvise long conversations like that. zombiedrea actually they improvised during rehearsal and put it the final script. In Before Sunset, the script did not even finish when they begin shooting. Therefore they have to 'improvised' the story during filming
SO YOURE TELLING ME THIS MAN IMPORVISED SOME OF THE MOST ICONIC SCENES IN THIS AMAZING MASTERPIECE OF A MOVIE?!? AND HE STILL DIDNT WIN HIS OSCAR NOMINATION FOR BEST ACTOR FOR THIS MOVIE!?
I love when actors improvise. It makes scene more real they come to life. I had a feeling when Timothee licked Armie it was improvised definitely my favorite scene next to the very last scene. Timmy crying made me cry it was heartbreaking yet beautiful. CMBYN is officially my all time favorite movie now lol
I agree it's a great moment, but I'd be interested to see any proof that it actually was improvised. Until then I won't believe it was. That sort of stuff was always discussed in advance (according to Timothée), so why would this scene have been an exception where Timothée didn't bother?
I think Timmy is a total genius and can't wait to see his career develop. The one improvised part that seems a little out of character for me is when he mocks Oliver saying "unless you have more important things to do". It felt too brotherly to me, like the way 2 brothers rib each other, and if you read the book, you know Elio worships everything about Oliver and it plays a little weird to me. But he should have won that Oscar!!!
How crazy is it that all the improvised moments by Timothee Chalamet are the most iconic moments/details about the movie? He’s so talented its unbelievable
Tuulia Moors some of the times it's not improvisation. The director tells how they want the scene and the actors act like the character would act in real life. Like "you have to act lovey-dovey" and the actors say "no problem bro". There are actors/films in general that are "mostly improvised" but because of the spontaneousness. And sometimes the actors came up with something that isn't in the script but the director finds it better than the original script. It's just matter of taste. And acting skills, which I lack. (Sorry bout my crappy english)
I think the part where armie says" because his french" in the scene did he speak or not??!! in which Oliver and Elio had a conversation about the book of the knight and princess! ..in the commentary Timmy said to Micheal that was improvised too.
