Hi All! At about 10:29 when I pointed to aldehyde dehydrogenase I accidentally said "alcohol dehydrogenase." I meant to say "aldehyde dehydrogenase." Pointed to the correct thing, but didn't quite come out right 😂
Also, some people have asked, what is considered a "drink"? Below is what is considered a standard drink in the United States:
14 to 15 grams of alcohol or about 0.5 to 0.6 ounces, which is equivalent to 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, and 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor.
Thank you for watching!
What do you think of only drinking sake as the only source of alcohol?
Can you explain medical marijuana? Is it necessary? Is it good for the body?
Gracias a usted por darnos mucho conocimiento del nuestro cuerpo👏👍💜
Why was I unable to "black out", or always have my "consciousnesses" present, no matter how much I drank in my younger days? It's actually why I don't drink now. And why do some weeds hurt my head, and only one type so far makes my brain pur? and why do pharmaceuticals not work on me? Even Ibuprofen, I can only take it for a few days, before my system seems to get used to it and I have to wait weeks before I can take them again and have somewhat of an effect. If you do decide to answer through the telegram thingy, please don't, it doesn't work for me for some reason. Have a nice day.

Congratulations 🎊
@@hildaklotz5592cringe. Just quit alcohol altogether and do weed instead.
I started drinking alcohol since my teenage, spent my whole life fighting alcohol addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Alcohol addiction actually destroyed my life. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.
Amen God bless people. Save your health save your mind. Life is better without heroin, cocaine, alcohol and cigarettes. And you have more money in your pocket. God bless everyone who has rejected the devils intentions to be addicted to alcohol and cigarettes etc which can cause so much damage to health.
Can you help me with the reliable source 🙏. I'm 56 and have suffered for years with addiction, anxiety and severe ptsd, I got my panic attacks under control myself years ago and they have come back with a vengeance, I'm constantly trying to take full breaths but can't get the full satisfying breath out, it's absolutely crippling me, i live in Australia. I don't know much about these mushrooms. Really need a reliable source!! Can't wait to get them
YES very sure of Dr.benfungi. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
Congrats! I'm really happy for you that your wife decided to help you. I always admire those who beat their addiction. Knowing it's possible to fix your life knowing there's people out there that have done what I thought was impossible gives me hope I will make it through as well. Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.
How do I reach out to him? Is he on insta
I am a recovering alcoholic and six months ago I spent two weeks in the hospital with kidney and respiratory failure. I was in a coma on life support and the hospital had "the talk" with my family, not expecting me to live . My creatinine level was 15. I also had major hallucinations prior to going to hospital. I had no idea I was doing such damage to my body. It is so hard to stop drinking but my doctor prescribed Naltrexone and it really helps. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Congratulations on taking the steps necessary to help yourself! ❤️ Lately I think we have an alcohol epidemic, where almost everyone seems to drink almost every day. It’s such a normal and expected part of our culture (in the US anyway) that anyone who doesn’t drink alcohol is considered unusual and typically automatically assumed to have an alcohol use problem. I cannot imagine how hard it must be to fight this, not only from within but also from all of the incessant reminders from society and your surroundings. Keep going with making your mental and physical health a priority! ❤❤❤
How is it possible it is 2024 and you didnt know alcohol is dangerous to the body (or ar least the brauin)?
One day at a time. Keep coming back.
My family member almost died 2 times.
Sharon! Good for you!!! You’re not alone. Be encouraged today. Thank you for sharing. 💜☀️☕️
Lemme buy you a drink to celebrate.
I have never really liked drinking alcohol, and mainly drank socially with friends in my 20s. As I've gotten older, I barely drink at all. I don't need it to loosen up or relax, and I dislike how it makes me feel afterward as it disrupts my sleep. It's kind of overrated to me.
Ditto
im an irish lad in his 20s, never drank not planning to. Just not worth it imo and i personally dont need to have fun
Cause it's literal toxens that your body is trying to flush out. There's nothing healthy about it. I used to drink socially with friends and at family parties, but I've abstained from it for a while now. Alcohol always made me feel rough and I hated the hangovers it gave me. I'm better off without it tbh.
Hmm I'm in my 30s here soon and never drank like anything just out of fear from what I've seen from family and friends. If I could I'd avoid people who drink alcohol but gl with that...
@@XZ-III You can always hangout just order non-alcoholic drinks. Nobody is going to care or even know if you're discreet.
Ive stopped alcohol completely 😊 i do feel like having a drink right now. But im letting it pass. Each day i decide, today im taking care of myself and wont have alcohol, sigerettes ect. And before you know it, weeks passed, months,...just one day at a time.
Congratulations! ❤
Well done, keep going, one day at a time; 12 years sober and smoke free here using that very same method.
Thank you Friend!
Thank You Friend!
Oh thanks for the encouragement, I much appreciate it 😊 I really thought I wouldn't succeed because i failed stopoing many times. Struggled to maintain it longer than 3 weeks. But I'm managing it good now. People can even drink in front of me now, I can even smell it without it making me want to drink. I can enjoy going out without drinking too. Never would have thought that before I started. I thought it would be difficult for like a year, but after a few weeks it already started to be easyer. So if you struggle, know once you've passed the hard part it gets easyer and all it takes is maintaining it. You don't have to suffer or feel you deny yourself something. It feels like selfcare NOT drinking for me now. Before idd reward myself with a drink. Now I see I was self harming by drinking. And guilt and shame was self-harm too, drinking is punishment for our body enough. No need for shame and guilt. (Shame and guilt can be a sabotaging spiral) Today is today and today I decide not to drink. 😊 this seems to work for me. I've been trying for years for a way that worked. Turns out being hard for myself didn't work but actually being kind to myself and setting healthy boundaries do. For anyone who reads, don't give up. Find what works for you, because you deserve it. ✨️
When my dad was dying, I was drinking way more than I should have to cope. I stopped and lost 6lbs. I think we tend to be in denial on what it does to our body over time. Even my face and skin have changed.
Sorry to hear about your dad❤️

Awesome
Really. You observed changes. Great.
I stopped drinking alcohol 40 years ago, and that was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.
I have a serious alcohol problem, which I have been struggling with ever since I was young. Now I'm 53 and I haven't had any alcohol for 4 or 5 years.
I'm struggling with a lot of problems. Sometimes I feel like I just need a break from my life .... and a bottle of something. 😖
But this kind of video helps me a lot. It reminds me how terrible everything was, when I was drinking.
So a big thank you for this video. 🙂
Congratulations on your sobriety! ❤

I know right. I also agree. Much love to you friend
Alcohol is poison. Stop drinking poison.
Had my last drink on New Years Eve 2020. I only really intended to go dry for January 2021, but decided to just keep going.
Congratulations. That's says a lot. Sounds like your in tune with your mind & body.
I was hoping you might go into some of the effects of long-term, heavy alcohol use, such as alcohol withdrawal and Alcohol Related Dementia. Maybe in a Part Two?
I was a dementia ward nurse for 25yrs. Please help educate people so no other family has to face the horrifying person alcoholic dementia turns their loved one into!
Alcohol related dementia? That’s been happening to me . I stopped drinking the margaritas
I stopped drinking about a year ago. The change that shocked me the most was the boost to my mental capacity. My Memory and Problem Solving ability has had a noticeable increase. I'm also able to do math in head like I could back in college. I've also lost my beer gut and my six pack is starting to show through. I wish I stopped years ago.
Alcohol is poison. Don't drink poison.
I'm 78 years old and I enjoy beer and wine. I give up for 6 weeks as a new year resolution. This year I aim to only drink at the weekend. This video and the comments is so helpful as I thought exercise and a good diet were very important in countering some of the effects of moderate alcohol consumption.
This stuff should be taught to grade school children and high school, as well as be college requirement. I mean, the entire subject of human anatomy and nutritional science. Life saving information!
Congratulations to everybody in the comments who stopped and are sober. I am proud of you. This is great thing! ❤❤❤ Not everybody can do it. I don't know I would been able to do such thing. You are heroes!
I got sober cold turkey about a month ago after yet another blackout and havent wanted a drop since. I am so grateful for all the information readily available about the harms of alcohol

I'm watching this at 54 after being completely abstinent for 6 years. In 2018 when I _'Needed'_ at least 1, sometimes 2 bottles of red wine every day and at the time I could never imagine being without it! One non alcoholic drink did the job of replacing it - Lemon & Lime Squash! I can't actually remember when I 'gave up' but it just happened, by the Grace of God
Congrats!

my mother just passed away from liver cirrhosis caused by her severe alcoholism. We were estranged but she was only 58 years old and it was horrible to read over what had happened to her body.
Excellent. Alcoholism is rampant in every generation in my family so this was very helpful. Glad I gave it up 35 yrs ago
I didn’t hear you say that the liver focuses so much on removing the alcohol from your body that it either stops or severely slows down its work in other necessary areas to further your detriment from alcohol. Happy to hear you say that alcohol is toxic. Cheers
I think they actually did mention it in another video that they made about alcohol about a year or two ago.
Nice to know they did in the past. 👍🏾
Great video, I'm a heavy drinker and would usually drink myself to oblivion every weekend. But this year I've decided to hold back and reduce my drinking. So much so that it's only twice since the new year. Now while I do actually love being drunk, I'm no menace if out in public and a quiet drunk at home. Basically I think I needed to try something different, I think it's going alright, losing weight, feeling more clear and even started a garden. I think I might keep it so and have only the occasional drink from now on, also it's a waste of money so I can buy more cool things instead and plants...
Wife, from other room: "I'll be there in a sec.. what's it about today?
Me, finding my glasses: "Uh... Should I stop drinking."
Wife, all too quickly: "Oh god, yes. But what's the video?"
😂😂😂. Definitely laughed out loud at this one!
Buh dum TISS!
You’ve got a problem buddy, but yes I should stop drinking also. 😕
I’ve always been a casual drinker with friends and family (and from ages 17-19 I drank far, far too much). It was always something to look forward to and everyone around me drank without a thought. Watching videos like this have truly changed my perspective in every way about alcohol. I only drink once every few months on special occasions, and have no desire to consume it otherwise. I’m happy that I came to this conclusion earlier (age 23) than later in life. Thanks for all these fantastic videos!!!
I drank heavily on and off for a few year, sometimes go almost a week getting very drunk and then other times staying sober for a few days then drunk again for a few days, like a little spiral with breaks but short breaks and noticed I started to feel completely different and have brain fog almost all the time and anxiety with low mood and stopped enjoying things, I would sometimes get pains in my kidneys and my liver I think, like pressure next to where my liver is and started worrying about my health so stopped drinking and 6 weeks in and feel a ton better and got tons more mental clarity less anxiety and depression and can actually think straight haha, I love watching things like this now to remind me why I stopped. Alcohol is no joke specially if you abuse it
Exact same thing for me. I never find comments about this particular pattern of drinking. For the last 4 years I’ve drank 3-4 for nights a week. Usually a pint of whiskey or vodka. Some times 3-4 in a row. Sometimes broken up every other day. Never felt the need to wake up and drink. No shakes and those classics alcoholic symptoms. I’ve had all the same aches and pains you speak about. It’s a weird place to be in. You can function (kinda) yet there’s definitely a problem.
Good on ya. Thanks for sharing. There are no health benefits to drinking alcohol. Zero!
How are you doing so far?
I’m 39 and had some fun times drinking in my 20s, but around 25 cut back a lot and in my 30s barely drink at all. I lift weights a lot and alcohol makes for awful recovery, lack of energy in the gym and empty calories. It’s so much easier to stay lean not drinking.
I think I got an explanation now why one of my brothers would get giggly from just a few small zips of alcohol - probably lack of enzymes and NAD+, which are already exhausted from other stressors in his life.
Love learning from you guys and including the cadavers for the tour of alcohol in the body. Your videos keep improving with graphics and white board discussions. Cheers again!
I stopped drinking 11/14/2020 I still think about it everyday
Hope you have supportive people nearby. Keep going, you can do it
Yea same but it was such a good choice, keep it up you can do it!!
What I use is a mindfulness exercise I learned: I watch the thought, and then turn my attention to something else. Thoughts/desires come and they go.
I think about it everyday too…
Why did I waste so much time drowning in poison….i still struggle with depression…but at least I feel better and sleep better so that helps in itself.
I hope things get better.
@@JessieRedyou spent time with the poison because you are struggling with depression. You answered your own question
I have a drinking problem. Mainly from psy things and disorder of perceptions. I drink (way) too much beers. Everyday.
I was able to give good long stops about my drinking habit from the past. But once in a while, life strokes with full power without mercy. Thence bottles became parts of my world again.
As miserable it might sounds, alcohol is some kind of escape from the suffering. Even if I am aware (as mentioned is the video) that I am causing more troubles than resolutions.
I am afraid to never find the balance there... Anyway, thanks for reading, and thanks for the video. I will try another hold to my drinking problem. Take care guys.
That's exactly what alcohol is, an escape. Escape from the past, the current, from boredom, from your insecurities etc. You have to take the steps to fix those other parts of your life, so you no longer need the escape. Alcohol is a bandaid that only prolongs and increases your problems. You really need to write out a plan to address what you can (with therapy, hobbies, friends, fitness etc). Good luck.
Sounds familiar
Keep getting up when you fall
I drank a lot of alcohol but finally started to feel bad and overwhelmed by the effects and currently I’m straining from it and it makes my life so much better. Great video, inspiring 🎉
You’re an absolute legend, thank you so much for not judging. Been dry here since 2017 after being a big consistent drinker.
i quit alcohol December 3rd 2023, and its the best decision i have made after quitting smoking on thanksgiving 2015, and becoming vegan in May 2014. So, give your life a chance to live ☀🤷🏻♂😁💚 and then hope for the best, not the other way around ! 🤝 Great video, thanks !
I'm allergic to alcohol, I break out into handcuffs. I got sober in my 20's by white knuckle absence and I was miserable and relapsed after 3 years. Then in my 40's I used AA and honestly gave the program 100% effort and that wasn't easy but 12 years later I have these new tools and support to live with a calm mind and increased happiness, life still throws me a curve ball from time to time but today I able to better handle it with dignity and grace.

my brother in law has been sober for a year and he is loving the benefits. I recall when I first met him he was chunkier and had sallow skin; now he looks healthier. I hardly drink at all I think last time was in Flagstaff Arizona on vacation but honestly don't miss it.
one of the first things i learned in orgo chem 2 was the conversion of ethanol to ethanal then ethanone & our prof described the effects of this and i’ve always remembered since

I drink your prescribed limit but along with my regular limit, this is such a wonderful education 😍
I remember being a kid in the 70’s and my grandma lived in Cullman County Alabama which was a dry county. She was told by her doctor to drink a beer once every couple days or so. I believe it had something to do with her kidneys. She was even given a prescription by her doctor because of the county ban on alcohol.
And that's the point 😊
Interesting to note, my mother had been developing a gluten intolerance for a few years, and some months after quitting alcohol, it actually cleared up and got better!

So helpful to know more about why alcohol is really the dark cloud for humanity for all of history when taking in "larger " doses. Thank you.
It's been a scourge in my family lines and hard to believe it's legal for people with my genetic lines or mental disposition
Nice to know all my empiric lessons are scientifically explained. Keeping my intake so low that my liver, that wasn’t exposed to alcohol until I was 18, can cope just fine with what I’m throwing at it. Rarely have escaping alcohol in my bloodstream. Discovered a healthy yet social I take level just right for my body (102kg, 1,96m, 58 yr). Looking forward to responsibly carrying on with informed use of alcohol. Glad it never turned into an uncontrollable problem.
Very good and explanatory video ! Thanks for the info!!
There are 7 different types of Alcohol Dehydrogenase enzymes found in a human. Alcohol Dehydrogenase class 1 is the main enzyme involved in ethanol oxidation and besides liver, it's also found in the lining of the stomach which also convert ethanol to acetaldehyde. Genetics play a major role in determining the tolerance level in the human population. Even class 1 AlcD comes in 2 varients and one of the varient is more efficient than the other thus imparting more tolerance. Aldehyde Dehydrogenase also come in 3 classes: class 1 found in cytoplasm, class 2 in mitochondria and class 3 in stomach lining. So some alcohol also get broken down to acetate in the stomach itself but class 3 is less efficient than the other two. Also flushing of face, hangover, vertigo that result due to alcohol consumption is due to the effect of Acetaldehyde!!
Really enjoyed video. Great explanation of how the bodies work!
This was such a great video. Very informative. I’ll have a drink every other week or so, however, there has been times where I’ve overdone it when hanging out with friends.

what's considered "one drink" ? lol like 1 beer? 1 shot of whiskey? 1 keg? 😂
There are definitely people that stay around that 1-2 drinks and live relatively healthy lives, and for others it doesn't work well. I think it really comes down to a personal choice for everyone.

Hey Jonathan, everybody is aware about the alcohol toxicity but people tend to ignore fructose which also is metabolized by the liver. Could you explain how alcohol and fructose effect liver and which one does more damage considering how often we consume fructose in our daily lives.
As long as you are eating real fruit (not juice or candy), fructose will always be better than alcohol. Whole fresh fruit contains fibre and other good stuff.
Great video, love that it’s right to the point. Well done good sir.
I haven't drank any alcohol at all since 2009. Before that it was 2003 when I had one drink after my Nan died. My experience is that everything in the body and mind works properly. No heart issues, not easily tired, clean teeth, healthy skin. No erectile problems. No muscular atrophy even at 41. Another interesting thing I've noticed is that, although I started going bald at 19 I hardly have any grey hairs in my beard or on my body whereas many people I know that have drank heavily started going grey in their early 30's. I can just jump on my bicycle and cycle 20 miles like I was 18. I also find that as time goes on I'm able to deal with life's issues without reaching for a crutch. It strengthens you spiritually. All in all I don't think I'll ever drink alcohol again. I'm at a point now where I can't even remember what it tastes like. I hope this gives encouragement to others that want to follow a similar path. Cheers.
Love this, thank you!

Awesome video! I really hope you’ll make a video talking about the deficiency that some people have that causes a higher build up of the acetaldehyde. I’m one of those people and can’t really drink anymore but I’ve always wanted to know from a more scientific perspective why this happens, what are the dangers, are there cures, etc. although after watching your video I’m going to continue to not drink alcohol but I’ve always been curious about it
Second all of this!
Great and informative video 🎉
The actual chemistry behind "alcohol" is very fascinating, and it wasn't until I was in high school chemistry class that I learned that there are many different types of alcohol and it's only ethanol which we can consume.
I wanna see you do how older people still look young or how age affects the body!! :)
Just lost my uncle last week to liver cancer😔 he was 58. He was told years ago to stop because his liver was very weak but he was addicted unfortunately🙏🏾
That’s what alcohol can do unfortunately, only three years older than my pops too! Wow….hmm that’s why I’m personally against college and high school kids even having access to that stuff 😹😹 like a drinking age of 25 would be much better and save a lot of lives!

I’m trans, male-to-female, and when my doctor told me I was going to have to cut back (citing guidelines), I tried to argue that since I was born male those are the guidelines that should apply (I like to use whatever sex is most advantageous for any particular thing or situation). He disagreed. The first two reasons you cited - body size and water to fat ratio - both put me on the female side now. But now I’m wondering about alcohol dehydrogenase! So many things changed unexpectedly just from replacing testosterone with estrogen and progesterone, I’m curious if this is one of them. I know getting drunk definitely is likely to make me a sad depressed mess now, which was never the case before.
Just follow the male guidelines as you are male👍
Was thinking about having a drink, and this video popped-up.)

Thank you for this informative video! Loving your content, and your enthusiasm. (Also, please don't feel the need to dial-down on the nerdiness! We love it)
To more such great videos! (Uh oh!)
I’m 46 and perhaps had half a liter of alcohol in total in my life. It never appealed to me, and I’m glad it was that ‘easy’ for me. But I’ve seen destruction early on and I’m here to say if you struggle, you’re not judged. You got this, I’m keeping fingers crossed that you find a way to manage it. Wishing you success!
I am a college student who is in her early 20s. I rarely drink. I had a drink on my 21st birthday and the next day, I felt awful. I got about 2 hrs of sleep, a bad headache, nausea, etc. I was also on my period which made it worse. After my night of drinking, I was like "yeah I am not going to drink again." I don't know how some people can drink and sleep fine. Drinking and I don't mix. Stay sober. (You can still have fun without alcohol).
Maybe it's because I'm always depressed but I sleep like a damn rock, alcohol makes it better. Tho if I have too much I get a headache the next day
Try some good quality wine.
@@ExtraThiccc i understand but alcohol is different for everyone. If you drink in moderation it’s fine.
@@sandythemonk wine is still alcohol. I just literally said I don’t drink a lot.
Thanks for this video
I'd like to see a video talking about how high FODMAP foods affect different people.
I just started drinking after 33 years of never drink at all. I don' t really care if I don't drink (only do it socially) but I was told that drinking kills you slowly and I am ok with that.
What a king.
As always
Moderation is key.
Then again why moderation for a known neurotoxin? Many pesticides are neurotoxins but I would not take those in moderation either lol.
@@johnlesoudeur3653Because alcohol is harmless if you don't drink a gallon of it every day
@@johnlesoudeur3653
Because this isn't a neurotoxin.
I would take a shot of whiskey one or twice a week.
I wouldn't take a shot of arsenic ever.
You know why?
Because I'm not retarded clown who only deals in absolutes.
Very helpful, I stop drinking the day I spent more than an hour to change a flat tyre on a very cold night near Middleburg.
Thank you. The human body is endlessly fascinating.
Great content
Don't care how bad it is for u I love drinking. I catch a buzz 2-3 times a month. I work and never lose sight of what I have. Drinking is my outlet so I'll never give it up.

Good luck with that.
I've got a family history of alcoholic tendencies, so I routinely go through a period of enforced dry spells to keep myself honest. The longest I made it was about six months when I was doing a whole anti-inflammatory routine. These days I'm on topiramate which is strongly contraindicated against alcohol, so I avoid it. I got to be the DD on New Year's Eve this year.
Very informative! Can you please do a video on non-alcohol fatty liver disease?
Yes. You should

Just in time for Mardi Gras!

I appreciate your intellectual content. I didn't see the answer I was looking for. I expected to learn what causes the symptoms of drinking. I see where you explained what parts of the brain are supposed to do what they do, but what causes slurred speech and imbalance? I'm looking for more of a physiological reason. I mean, what is it about ethanol that causes these common malfunctions? I hope I've clarified what I'm trying to find out adequately.
