One smart & rich man said, -“ how do you distinguish a good teacher from bad? I actually learn when you speak.
Get yourself the "circular" E6-B from Sporty's. They came in 3" and 6" models (apparently they don't make the 3" anymore). I had the 3" but couldn't see the numbers so I got the 6". Much better and the 'circular' E6-B does not have the annoying slide card. Just flip it over and all your wind calculating can be done by spinning disks.
Working towards my PPL, your videos are bar-none the clearest and best I've come across ! And the fact you're double wielding watches is the cherry on top !
Enjoyed the E6B video.....I remember when I was taking my written test.....this question was on mine. Keep up the good work......your teaching techniques are impressive.
Thankyou Jason, mate this video has really helped me a lot. I am a VFR pilot in Australia and just getting into navigation and I am using the same E6B Flight computer as you feature on this tutorial, thanks again and safe flying God bless
I think this is great! Returning to the basics and technical airmanship is so necessary as we have proven over reliance on automation is very dangerous!!!!
Dont forget that when you are actually using this in flight, and not for just the question, Met wind is in magnetic so you gotta take variation in account before plotting your true winds.
I was calculating based on geometry & vectors to exact value. But, E6B makes easier to get value faster once I learned how to use it. He speaks clearly especially on numbers, which helps me to follow.
not a pilot, have only been on one commercial flight, but these slide rules fascinate me (I'm a bit simple too ha) I can just imagine the people who worked this system out toiling for hours and the absolute joy they must have felt when they got it all right, able to put so many skills in the hands of the laymen in one simple compact device. must have been quite the instrument in its day.
I'm a slide rule (and mechanical calculating machines) collector from germany (with a bit of fascination of aviation too) and I came to an E6B and asked myself "how does this freaking cool thingy work?" Now I know the basics, thank you for this, I'll calculate some routes now, just for fun. I hope I'll do my license some day, bit expensive here in good ol' germany, so I guess Gyrocopter would be a dream. It's a bit cheaper and I love Autogyros.
I got this actual question in Sporty's Study Buddy, and got it wrong because I guessed I haven't done calculations yet! but I aim to take my written this Feb so I better brush up! :) *THANK YOU*
Nice helpful presentation clearly done. I like the way you emphasized TO not rely on electronics. . The FAA examiner insists on seeing this okd school skill manually done AND with good reason .
Lovely explained, simple English for quick grasp and understanding 👊🏽. I will definitely try the example question worked on the vid, i am still in my early phase of the PPL some of the theory speaks about the flight computer..........I have one and I have not used it as yet...........this clip makes the type of career I chose to be very interesting I really cannot wait to become a fully fledged pilot.............
Just started flight training. Is this mainly for pre-flight planning or will the checkride examiner expect one to demonstrate this in flight? Tried solving a problem while flying x-plane and it wasn't pretty. Can't find any RUclips examples of pilots doing this in-flight.
Can you tell me if these calculators are used by civil pilots or business aviation pilots? And if so, how often can you meet pilots with a circular E6B or SRP 5 and an electronic version?
At minute 1:18 you say, "And I'll do a little bit of the leg work for you!". I need help with the leg work. On the test, I can't accurately measure the True Heading or the Distance....super frustrating!!!!!
however robo is correct that most calculations are done before flight, We still us this method while flying cross countries to make sure were still on course and to verify that we have enough fuel. Cross country flying is very busy to say the least!
I have no experience and just beginning to learn from watching content. One thing I don't understand is how did he get 181=TC. And definitely don't understand how he got 104? Please explain, dummy it up for me.
Shaun Bryant you get your plotter and put in on the map to those two airports he shows. Make sure the plotter wheel is straight which means the 0 will always be straight up and parallel to the longitude. Then you basically just see the angle which is around 181°
738polarbear stfu. everyone has some things they dont understand in the beginning. if you are a pilot i wish everyone around you who has to deal with your attitude good luck
No, there is no FAA rule that says you must use an analog e6b on your checkride. You know how I know? I did it on my checkrides and passed, and I've sent students to their checkrides with electronic calculators and all passed.
for times when the gadgets/toys lovers run out of power. ...in the past I lost power on all my gadgets while boating in the dark and ended up on a sandbar. Good thing that the boats can take a break when the navigator looses the bearings. While driving in the big city, I often get lost when my GPS runs out of power, maybe I need to learn to use the paper maps
Except now the faa has explicitly said that fore flight and garmin pilot are acceptable for use on checkrides, your examiner should not take it away from you as it is accepted as a primary flight planning tool
I passed all my checkrides without knowing how to use the e6b. the FAA does not require you to know how to use it and you are allowed to take a electronic computer in the test. its obsolete.
Must be an approved, i.e. aviation, electronic computer. You still have to know how to do all this, you just get to push buttons instead. I haven't used an electronic E6b, but I like having all the extra stuff like wind component and xwind correction charts right there. E6B is just more intuitive to me.
I start my first lesson on this tomorrow at 7AM...and I'm already terrified of this thing. I can't imagine using this thing while flying, squinting to see the numbers as is. I mean jeez you may as well be flying IMC while you're staring down at your lap trying to use this thing.... ugh.
One smart & rich man said, -“ how do you distinguish a good teacher from bad? I need an E6B that size just so I can see the numbers!
I know, right?!
Jeez I wouldn't want you as my pilot Magoo.
Get yourself the "circular" E6-B from Sporty's. They came in 3" and 6" models (apparently they don't make the 3" anymore). I had the 3" but couldn't see the numbers so I got the 6". Very easy to understand the concepts from this instructor. He makes the right emphasis when it is needed.
You'd have to re-calculate W&B if you brought that in your flight bag.
🤣
That is so fucking funny 😐
@@antwanrandleel499 It really is 😂 you’re not though
@@swaviator9623 I don’t doubt swaviator finds it funny. Just proved my point boss man
Lifesaver, your channel Sir is one of the best channels for learning to fly on RUclips, heartfelt thanks for making this
Thankyou Jason, mate this video has really helped me a lot. I am a VFR pilot in Australia and just getting into navigation and I am using the same E6B Flight computer as you feature on this tutorial, thanks again and safe flying God bless
i have been looking for a way to understand this e6b calculations for a while, and you made it so easy, thanks a lot man you're awesome.
Thanks Jason - looked around the RUclips for a while and this is by far the best way to get it across. Much appreciated.
this is so complicated. Im sure once you learn it , it is easy but right now blowing my mind
Same here. Ill do like 10 problems and then itll probably make sense lol
Thank you Jason you do a great job of teaching basic flight skills, you're a natural teacher keep up the great work.
man I Mexican im studying to be a pilot but really if I find something hard I just find your videos and helps me a lot...tks too much
well done, clean, clear, and professional
I was typing E6-B on youtube and hoping you'd have a lesson on this topic.. You never disappoint THANKS JASON ! :D

Jason teaches like NOBODY I've ever enjoyed before!!!
I was calculating based on geometry & vectors to exact value. But, E6B makes easier to get value faster once I learned how to use it. He speaks clearly especially on numbers, which helps me to follow.
Your explanation was extremely easy to follow with E6B in hand. Thanks !!
I have my Navigation test this Tuesday, & this helped me alot! Thanks!
Already have my PPL, but this is a great refresher, and very much appreciated. Thank you.
When I saw that E6, I was thinking: *wheel. of. FORTUNE!!*
Where can i gen a e6b that size?
not a pilot, have only been on one commercial flight, but these slide rules fascinate me (I'm a bit simple too ha) I can just imagine the people who worked this system out toiling for hours and the absolute joy they must have felt when they got it all right, able to put so many skills in the hands of the laymen in one simple compact device.

The best thing about E6B is that it never runs out of battery, it doesn't hang and it never loses GPS signal.
yes but but it not as good as the battery type ASA CX-3 flight computer
@@stevesayer4045 is the ASA CX-3 calculator usable for the checkride?

This man is a true teacher hats off to you 👏👍👨✈️🛫
Thanks for refreshing my memory.

Thanks Jason 😊 your always on top of the ball
Thank you for watching!
You're such a wonderful instructor.
Does this work with smaller numbers as well? For example, legs shorter than 10nm and time less than 10 minutes.
This video helped me out a lot... I am taking my FAA written on Good Friday 👍🏾‼️

nice vids
but it feels like you're yelling at me lol
Gotta turn down the volume lol
Can this calculator be used on FAA Airmen Knowledge (written) tests?
*is it bad that even with that massive thing I still can't really see the numbers that well?*
obviously you cant be a pilot :))
Just started flight training. Is this mainly for pre-flight planning or will the checkride examiner expect one to demonstrate this in flight? Tried solving a problem while flying x-plane and it wasn't pretty. Can't find any RUclips examples of pilots doing this in-flight.

Thank you. You got a subscriber simply for the awesome teaching aide!
Can you tell me if these calculators are used by civil pilots or business aviation pilots? And if so, how often can you meet pilots with a circular E6B or SRP 5 and an electronic version?
Could Jason teach me an advanced use of E6B. like how to use the small windows to calculate ALT and airspeed correction. :)
Wonderful, do you have videos on plotting questions ?
Do you have a tutorial like this for the newer E6-B8D computer?
Anybody know where you can get a manual e6b that size?
Thank you very much, made this very simple.
What about that purple dotted line on the sectional? Does that come into play in this example?
Comes into play _after_ this example. When you know your wind correction angle and true heading, you adjust it to your magnetic heading.
At minute 1:18 you say, "And I'll do a little bit of the leg work for you!". I need help with the leg work. On the test, I can't accurately measure the True Heading or the Distance....super frustrating!!!!!
How do you do all that while flying?
Andrew Wilkerson these calculations are performed before your flight, typically for a VFR flight plan.
however robo is correct that most calculations are done before flight, We still us this method while flying cross countries to make sure were still on course and to verify that we have enough fuel. Cross country flying is very busy to say the least!
Do as much you can on the ground. In the air is all about guesstimate.
I have no experience and just beginning to learn from watching content. One thing I don't understand is how did he get 181=TC. And definitely don't understand how he got 104? Please explain, dummy it up for me.

Shaun Bryant 104 is the ground speed. After he did all those steps your ground speed is where the open hole which is located in the center of the e-6b
You're too stupid to be a pilot . Be a bus driver.
738polarbear stfu. everyone has some things they dont understand in the beginning. if you are a pilot i wish everyone around you who has to deal with your attitude good luck
Hello, where did you buy it ? Thank’s
Did you learn to whisper while working in a sawmill? Please tone it down, thanks.
As usual always great but I have one thing to please you need to zoom in more so we can see sharply and a little bit slower thanks
Thanks for the feedback!
wow you made that look so easy and made to easy to fallow along as well I feel like an electronic e6b would not be any easier.
awesome straight forward video
Super helpful video - very useful information - thank you for sharing.
You are amazing. Love your videos!!! So useful!!!
what about Dist = GS X Time?
Thank you sir. Finally i could find the ETA.
Wow Jason, know you from Ken Herons channel. First time I've seen you from back in the past.
And there are the 2 watches :D
What size E6B would you like sir? They come in small, medium and large.
Awesome as usual.
Thanks Jason
What's the scale for the wca?
Fixit Felix is telling us how to do it the right way like always😉😂Thank you so much.
great video and all, but why do you have two watches? I'm so curious and could not concentrate through the video:)
Hi Javier! Thanks for watching! Jason wears two watches because one is set to Zulu time and one is set to local time! Fly safe!
The ‘ol whiz wheel... not many people like using those these days
Thanks for watching!
Very good and easy to understand. I love the large Computer, even without my glasses, i would be able to handle it :-D
No, there is no FAA rule that says you must use an analog e6b on your checkride. You know how I know? I did it on my checkrides and passed, and I've sent students to their checkrides with electronic calculators and all passed.

Your videos are great
What if I brought the E6B you used for the video to the test? Would that be frowned upon?
the double watch method on display here
Great video. Thank you.
I'm also looking to get a purchase a E6B like that, can you please advise where I can find one?
Look for Kane Dead Reconing Computer on Ebay

Thanks Lukas! I'm not sure they sell them anymore It was purchased from a friend
Great demo! Ah, the super wheel of mechanical mathematical bliss will be missed.
Wish I could bring that E6B hes using here into the testing site with me.
Hey Jason may I ask? In real life how do you get your weather info, atis METAR etc?
Luis Veras On the ASOS, AWOS, or ATIS frequency.
