2 strokes bikes are something else, they have their own unique feel. Nowadays they are almost extinct on the roads, pity those who never been on one.

There is a very small race track near me here in Japan, and I get to see kids racing on it with very small 2-stroke bikes. Dads are set up in the parking lot with the trailer and watch their sons do laps while their kids in tiny sets of full leathers run 25 second laps for an hour or so. The bikes sound like slightly larger than normal weed whackers. It's a great sight.

Cut my teeth on two strokes back in the 60s... always loved them...... The older bikes from the 80s were great, not full of electronics to 'idiot proof' them. My present ride ('88 CBR600 Honda) has no rev limiter, no ABS, no traction control (except my right hand), no quick shifter (just as fast without if you know how)............. goes well, handles pretty well for its age on original shocks.forks stops well too. Bur above all it has 'soul' like the ringdings I used to ride.
Bikes now are wonderful bits of technology, but the pursuit of speed and sophistication has taken a lot of the character out of them, at least in the sport classes.
Love my old classic..... would love one of the old 4-cylinder two strokes though... they are getting scarce and VERY expensive.

You can put a set of R7 Forks, Rim and Disc on it. I had some years ago from take offs the riders sold at the tracks. $300.00 US for the whole front end in those days....
If you find some. It's worth it. It will cure the track day riders front brake problem of over heating. Unless you can find some Japanese take off spare parts from OW series bikes... Not likely going to find those. The bikes are now in museums or collectors stashes and they snatched up all those spares from Yamaha....

Just enjoy them. As not to many people have the chance.. They are special bikes from an era long since past. As they are meant to be ridden. Not stored away or admired in some glass case in a museum...As these old war horses should be seen by everybody that loves motorcycles..
One reason I worked for Yamaha for 7 years. Just to be around them when I was a kid. There is just something about them.

In late Sept. of 1989, I rode my new (secondhand from Ed) '85 RZV500N (custom painted white frame and rims, ported and polished, Boysen racing reeds) from Toronto thru the mid-states up to Alberta over the Rockies and ended up in Vancouver where I drove it for 11 years all seasons on Michelins a 185 on the back. It ended up becoming an extension of my brain. The RZ also had clout, enabling me to trade it for a day with an ex-cop from NY dude/buddy to drive his all-black whale tail turbo '83 Porsche 911SC Targa, fat af rears with the wheel flares. Now that was a head-turner sporting the cool NY plates growling down the road top-down downtown. Running around with the RZ and a helmet on, no one knew who you were and the girls were scared of that smoke puffing monster - I guess it'd have helped if I took off the solo seat, huh. Anyway, that infamous RZ ruled the Vancouver streets, I believe, until one day a glossy navy blue R1 gracefully slingshot by me (almost disrespectfully) up to the red light driving 'round BC Place (the Indy track area), which set the tone for the future of road bikes to ride, in my eyes. Regardless, I lost my license due to too many points riding that thing ragged wherever a "safe" opportunity presented itself. Nonetheless, I wiped it out driving too tired in traffic around a curve doing 60kmh after being blinded by a van while changing lanes on that curve and bailing at the sidewalk curb to avoid an illegally parked car on a four-lane road and wrote the RZ off selling it to a restoration Edmonton guy as is for $250. My next bike if ever, may be a Ducati 998 or a slightly uglier Yamaha M1 (200hp). Expect the unexpected while riding and enjoy that 500 2-stroke cafe racer. It's not a matter of if you'll wipe out but when. And remember don't ride hard too tired in traffic. BTW thanks for the vid and showing off your RZ.

haha , watching it back i can see all the bits that need improvement , its a little hard to ride , keeping it in power on corner entry so your just in the power so you can stab it on the way out , could use better suspension bigger brakes and a nice clutch , main goals #1 keep it upright #2 have some fun . i think it may be time to get the 350 out there i recon it will be a heap of fun

man, that is so sweet!! I had a early eighties rz350, it was so great! live in the United States so it had like an emission exhaust that I replaced with a nice racing pipe and air box used to eat 750 up all the time. 500 were illegal in the United States but some people would get them in from Canada and retitling as350

+Enduro North Nz , Yes Sure those Diesel's like Open Class One litre bikes may have an Very Slight Advantage to a 500cc 2 Stroke , but the biggest minus with Keeping Pace or Overtaking is 1st, they had a Mile Head Start when all the bikes entered the Track Ahead of your 500 , 2nd Deficit is the track itself , it Favoured/Catered these bigger bike's by having Long Stretches of Long Straight Sections with long fast Sweeping kinks , Bends or Curves , Very little Chance to Reel them in lap after long lap. Change Venue's to a Short & Tight curcuit & Your 500 will Stay ahead just by Default with very little Riding input cause those bigger bikes can't access that high rpm Hp & Torque & Stock Gearing on the Tight & Twisted track they'd be Highsiding/Lowsiding, Crashing & out Braking/under Braking themselves all over the place the 500 or even the better of the two RZ's the 350 Would even with the Right rider on Board Stay ahead of the Whole Lot. And i didn't even touch on State of Tune of all these Street bikes & Equipment like the Second most important track Day Tool the Black thing that contacts the Tarmac the ever improving off Road/Racing Tire Compound. Thanks for the video Perspective of your video though. Do you Leave your bike Stock ? or do you have race settings on this bike for full on Attack Mode riding , ? Engine , Chassis/Suspension, Race Compound Rubber etc etc.

I wonder why the European RD500 had a steel frame and the RZ500 had an alloy frame? I remember when they came out, everybody was in awe of such an extreme race replica, but then they found that they didn’t quite make the power of two RD250 LCs as hoped. Needed a bit of porting to make them live up to expectation.

    • @enduronorthnz6437

not sure maby they felt the home market needed the flash frame , they are bit of a pig on the road , a nice 350 is more of a road bike
