I’ve been a musician all my life and I’ve always loved science. I got two bachelor’s degrees: one in classical cello performance and one in molecular biology. Through cello related injury and some other junk I ended up as a biochemist and am now applying to PhD programs. This was really hard for me: at my core, I am an artist. That’s how I’ll always define myself when it comes down to it. I thought at first that deciding to pursue a PhD meant shedding my identity as an artist and a lover of the humanities. I’m still not through it, but I’ve had a few years to think about it and I’m coming to believe that that’s not the case at all. My creativity and passion make me a highly effective researcher and enable me to contribute ideas that others won’t have thought of. I felt horrible for so long because I felt like I couldn’t live without either music or science, but it turned out I was thinking about it wrong: I don’t have to give either of them up at all, I just have to be flexible about how I keep them in my life. Being a professional is not the only legitimate way to make a discipline part of your life. My many interests interact with each other and constantly create new, better versions of me. They’re inextricable from each other. And ultimately, what I get paid to do doesn’t have to trample the rest of who I am. It really shouldn’t do so. I am a human being; it’s impossible for us to be two-dimensional. I’m not really going anywhere with this, but I just hope to help someone who also feels pulled in two directions. Things eventually line up; if it feels impossible, you just haven’t found out how you fit together yet. You just have to keep going.

That is so comforting to hear. I'm a cellist and a singer, but also going on (hopefully!) to study biochemsitry at University. It's so difficult sometimes to balance my passions and figure out which one I want to pursue and identify myself by.
I suppose I also console myself in the fact that several great scientists played musical instruments.

I think about this post modernism culture almost daily. Are we just going ‘higher up’ in the education system just to become another efficient machine (just a cog in the machine)? I live near the tech valley and this competition for ‘success’ disheartens me because it leads to a diminution of creativity and curiosity. Around fifty years ago, Japanese scientists coined the term, “uncanny valley”, to illustrate the demoralizing and disquieting feeling that rises when subjects are shown graphics of human-like representations that ultimately fall short of being a human. I feel like our society is slowly turning this abstract ‘uncanny valley’ into a physical reality. People are becoming ignorant, especially when it comes to liberal arts and humanites, so it is important to continuously raise awareness and allow others to question their own purpose. Thank you for sharing, Waldun!

    • @AmusingMusic

@donaldothomoson Or rather things are more dumbed down nowadays. Also knowledge is power, and power is threatening to the status quo. Having many interests in a capitalist economy means workers will be less likely to master or stick to one particular field, and that doesn't really benefit the system, as it requires strict and disciplined workers who are good at one particular thing and do that for the rest of their lives. Ironically a capitalist mode of production initially inspired a lot of technological progress and innovation, but nowadays, thinking outside the box harms you more often than it rewards you.

I have always found myself gravitating toward a polymath kind of lifestyle. I like music, science (all branches), ancient history, philosophy (mainly existentialism and metaphysics), linguistics, martial arts, storytelling, anthropology, culinary arts, and a plethora of other fields that I will never have time to gain a higher education in. So, I developed a rather autodidactic way of attaining knowledge concerning those fields of interest. I have no end goal for them other than the acquisition of knowledge so maybe that's what I should narrow down. What will I do with this knowledge?

I have to say I am facing the worst side of it tied with ADHD. I have too many interests, I will hyper focus and deep dive into something, obtain a just below surface level of understanding and expertise, and then proceed to drop interest, being incapable of mastery, and ultimately being confused as to what I actually like and want in life.
Years of this, major distractions from career, even starting my own venture, totally sidelined by stupid obsessions that are very temporary, and I feel unable to grasp that venture and take steps I need, it’s viscous.
I love learning, I love that I can have so many interests, but there comes a point to where it drags you down, leaves me holding the empty bag as my peers find financial stability and a direction in life, any direction at all.
I feel pointless, I can’t buckle down and take a direction, let alone see it to the end, or even halfway at that.
The problem is, indulging in my interests and learning, hampers my life, it distracts me from being above average at what I am currently doing, often below average. It’s so very odd to deal with, and hard to really convey the lack of motivation and energy that appears before me when I have even a simple task. I can get amped up at work for something after or something I need to get done, and the moment I am out of the door, it’s like falling off a cliff.

I think Universities' structure can encourage a multi-disciplined approach learning, but its core function is still to specialise students into their future roles. I think life long learning is a personal responsibility. It's something we should do outside of the classroom.

That's such an interesting anecdote about your maths teacher - I genuinely think that some people just aren't capable of or even interested in using multiple points of focus to achieve a single goal. As in, maybe they can only see real value in their own field. To me, it just feels like putting blinkers on and there's a certain arrogance to it, this assumption that anything else is distracting or extraneous. But I'm always in the habit of assuming that I'm the most ignorant person and that knowing more, learning more, can only make me a better, more-rounded learner. I want to be useful, you know?
This makes me think about my final year undergrad thesis. My BSc is in Analytical Chemistry but, like you, I have a ton of interests and it makes me a better scientist, I think. I did my thesis on spectroscopy in the conservation of art and historical artefacts. My peers were looking into really cool stuff like targeted cancer therapies and environmental monitoring but I just knew that I was interested in bridging a gap between art and science. That was something I found real value in and I was so, so grateful to my supervisor that he understood what my goal was and was genuinely interested to see the outcome of my work. I was so nervous at our thesis presentation, listening to everyone else's research and knowing that mine was completely different but I take great pride in educating my peers in how knowing history informs how we understand artworks/artefacts and how they were made which in turn informs what we understand about it and how we can preserve it. I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I absolutely loved writing my thesis - it was so completely *mine*.

I love the way you explained this and validated the idea of having multiple interests and actually pursue them, thank you for that. I had a hard time choosing my major mostly because of this and some of my teachers in school were not happy with any decision I made because I kept changing it. I feel like there is not enough room for young people to just explore their various interests while in school, and also the idea of “choosing just one thing for the rest of your life“ is highly old fashion because it is just not the reality right now. One last thing is that sometimes I have felt like my interest just relies on that topic to be brand new and when I do it for a while it kind of loses the fun and my attention. I had an experience during my graduation and a teacher said "if you do many different things, you might not be anything". Essentially he was speaking about specializing in one subject of design (my graduation), but I always disagreed with that. There is also the duck phrase: ducks can walk, can swim and can fly, but don't do any of theses things very well. I always hated all that and recently I realised why. I'm an illustrator, I have skills in design, I have bookbinding skills, crafting is my passion and I can mix all those things to create books that are unique and no other person have. I know many things and I know well enough to be functional e beautiful, but I'm super specialised because I mix this things together. So knowing about a single thing it's harmful, prevent you from being a human being, since every human being have different intesrest, but also prevent you from doing things that only you can make. i really think that’s necessary somehow, but it is important to remember as well that when are we focus on so many things our brain just can’t organize everything and that’s when burnout happens, as you said it’s important to focus in one thing but mixes with another things also sometimes because if just make everything at once we’ll just know a little in multiple things rather be good at something and have multiple skills.

Dude this is the fucking truth. I relate to you a lot and my side hobbies also turned into my actual jobs. I had been feeling annoyed at myself for not focusing on one thing because I felt I was just becoming mediocre in all things but you’re right, combining interests could lead to wonderful outcomes. I love this perspective.

Don't be hard on your math teacher. This person is in a discipline of hard numbers and has become binary in their thinking. For some people, having an arrow focus on their life does help. I know many people in the sciences that are this way. However, you are one of those more rare multi-faceted creative types. You are a writer and will need to take the wide path to develop your skills. Embrace your creativity and let it unfold. In many ways, you remind me of myself when I was your age. Full of exploration. I hope you continue with these coffee talks. It is a pleasure to get to know you a bit better and to see where you are going.

I just discovered this video and I am so incredibly happy that I did!
You talk precisely about the thing that I have been struggling with for so long. Growing up I always had multiple interests and I always had this curiousity to learn about EVERYTHING. and this curiousity has been a driving force in my life.
And as a kid, I always had people telling me that that's a bad thing and if I don't focus on one thing I will never get far in life.
it is so refreshing to hear someone speak about this topic from a different perspective! And I 100% agree with you.
I wouldn't have it any other way. Some things I tried over the years have turned out to be not for me, but I also found a lot of joy and inspiration in diving into different fields.

As someone who has many different passions and is always lost on where to go with it, ranging from youtube to filmmaking to photography, music and even more, this video really reassured me. I full agree with the idea that the people who are skilled in multiple areas and find a way to combine them in a new way are really the ones who are going to accomplish great things in life. It gets overwhelming sometimes and I feel bad about wanting to do so much, but this video really was a sign for me to keep going, thank you a lot :)

I have like 30 REAL interests and Idek which to focus on for a career.
Everything creative arts base I pushed aside because it’s not guaranteed success. I decided to save that for when I have money for my hobbies.
The only other thing I could think of was like you said… RUclips. RUclipsrs are able to do ALL of their hobbies and make them into videos.
Now that’s also not guaranteed success but yeah I’m still thinking about how I’m gonna sort out all of my hobbies

Thank you so much for this. I too struggle with many interests and “phases” and feel quite self conscious about not having one thing that I absolutely master. Learning a language, reading, piano, DJing, strength training, these are all things that make up who I am. I am trying to let go of the concept of being perfect at one thing and trying to embrace all of these interests. Life is too short to limit oneself and god knows I’ll add 5-6 things to this list by the time I’m old.

I can totally relate to all of this. I have so many interests. I have a PhD in engineering, and engineering is my main career focus. However, my real joy is in the world of art. I draw, paint, sketch... a little bit of everything. My RUclips channel and IG page are my attempts at sharing my artwork. I also am classically trained in guitar. I have played guitar for a long time, I have performed, and I have written classical guitar music. I recently have become focused on language learning, with Japanese being my main focus. I have a hard time making time for everything, and I always start thinking about how I can make all of these my career. Starts driving me crazy at times.

This is so true. I burned out of pre-med when I was doing my undergrad but I still enjoy learning the sciences. I did English for my undergrad and currently doing Theology for my masters. I’m also working as an event tech. I got into my masters and my current job because I developed an interest in those things outside of the classroom. I’ve only got electives left so I’m pursuing the topics I wasn’t really able to immerse myself into when I was in undergrad. I hope to get back into performance once I graduate next year because I miss the stage so much!
My friends and I have conversations like these all the time. I used to get so frustrated with myself with why I wasn’t able to specialize in one thing or go for fields that were more profitable. But they said “anything can be profitable. The problem is not that your interests are too big, but their view is too small.” That made me more confident with keeping up my interests in the arts despite being made to give up pursuing it so many times.

I'm now 17. I have too many interests. My first interests in childhood was music. And this year I am trying to combine my passions, but... I start to realise, thanks to your video, that I firstly need to do first things, and only then next. I mean... A thought just came to me - what if I decide to study one field, and when it's going to be enough I will study the other? Sounds good considering that I already have a great (in my opinion) idea, which I wish will one day become my business.
You seriously inspired and encouraged me to pursue that idea and my interests at all.
I also understood that the main problem is not the quantity of my interests, but perfectionism. Thanks again, it was a great advice to hear. I appreciate it very much.

I recently started my music based youtube channel, because it is the interest I am most passionate about. I've struggled with leaving behind other fairly huge interests of mine like painting, videography, literature, theology, and writing. I feel like I need to niche down all the time, when I really want to be uniquly me and enjoy my interests. I think they are connected, but haven't yet discovered how to live that out. I'm doing the youtube thing, and hope to expand my channel into more of my artistic interests. For now I'll do the music thing, but I love the idea of not having to let go of everything else I enjoy.

Good points. How does this work with Inattentive ADHD? Naturally, I’ve 5 to 10 even 15 interests. But do I have the Time Management skills, energy, sufficient sleep, PERSISTENCE to even remember to further develop those interests after the initial inspiration fizzles away in about half an hour? Right now all I can manage is Fulltime work (unrelated to my interests) and cooking to eat healthy. I desperately want to travel internationally to a tropical destination, learn how to play the drum set, learn chords further up the guitar neck, read all those influential self development books, build a library of them, learn and create a portfolio in Web Dev, become fluent in the Romance languages that I kinda know, learn a few unrelated Slavic languages like Polish, Russian, also Arabic. I also want to develop self defense skills in boxing, Judo, Brazilian Jujitsu perhaps even knife and gun techniques and THEN my main love which is surfing (not on web but the ocean) in both short and longboard-which is a VERY high maintenanace pursuit needed to be done DAILY to keep a certain level. Im also interested in dancing, yoga, sprinting and general athleticism.

Here I am, scrabbling a comment under your video... as a child I developed many interests. At first it was books, then nature, then arts and my dad's camera and every time I felt like I discovered something new. The problem is that by the end of high school I had to choose and consequently lose one of my interest. The point is that is comforting to see that many people in this comment section say that they both gained a PhD and pursed their others passions. So, thank you for making this video and thank you to everyone who shared their experience below

So I'm in high school currently, people always tell me to just try as many different things as possible but really I've tried close to everything I can in my lifetime before high school, I did a lot of different things in my elementary and middle school years. People also tell me there's no such thing as having "too many interests" which I don't think is true. Since I'm in high school everybody is kind of picking the path of classes they want to go down for their career, I still don't know what to do for my career and the issue is that i'd be happy to do way too many jobs in a huge range, i've considered things like culinary, architecture, interior design, writing, lawyer, artist, fashion, music, photography, engineering, scientist, translator, and anything that works with animals (besides vet). Issue is i'd be equally as happy to do any of those things.
