My mom and dad had plots next to each other with intention of being buried there..my dad passed in 1988 and used 1 plot...when my mom passed in 2003 she decided to donate her body for medical research so we had no use for the other grave...
Many years later in 2016 my niece was killed in a car wreck and we wanted to bury her next to her grandfather...we approached the cemetery with what we wanted, and they said fine..but since my mom and dad were still technically the owners, me and my siblings, all 6 of us would have to sign off on it..since 2 of siblings had passed, all 8 of their children would have to sign off on it....it was an incredible mess.....

I have recently been thinking about this. My parents bought two graves, and my aunt and uncle bought two adjoining graves.
My parents passed away several years ago. The aunt and uncle died and were buried in a different state. I have been considering calling my cousin to see if he wants to do something with the grave sites that his parents purchased. I guess the first thing I should do is see who holds the title for the entire plot, or if both couples have separate titles.

I live in CA & have relatives who've purchased multiple burial plots in the 50's. Whenever members died, plots would be paid for & would sometimes be donated to distant family members who were strapped for $$. All they needed to pay for was opening & closing that was more than the original cost of the grave. Others have opted for cremation as a cheaper option. For years I've seen in newspaper want ads sections for burial plots or crypts for sale at upscale cemeteries, so it's common in my area.
What's tricky & awkward is when couples buy his & hers plots when they're younger, & after a demise of one, the surviving spouse remarries.

My great aunt and grandma had a similar situation to this. Great aunt married her first husband who died just months after the wedding. She then married my great uncle and they were married over 40 years until he passed. My grandparents who purchased a graveside together divorced so my great aunt gave the plot she had with her first husband to grandma.

The cemetery I purchased 4 grave sites at will buy them back for what I paid for them. Even after I’m gone the extra sites will be transferred to my kids and the cemetery will buy them back from them if they don’t want them. That was a huge selling point for me.

I’m upset with the cemetery. They sold my mother with dementia a site that was supposed to be for three of us with urns. She thought it was all inclusive to include the burial itself. It was not. Then they added more charges for that. Then they changed the terms of the contract. It was bought for 3, but now they will only allow two to be buried. Oh, but we will will give you a great deal on another plot. Buyer beware. I need to unload this.

When my oldest sister died at 4 days old in 1951, my dad bought 4 plots. One for my sister Mary Ann, for him, one for his then wife, and one just in case they lost another child. Well, they got divorced, and he got the plots. He didn't need 4 plots, so he was going to be buried in the one next to my sister, and he looked into selling the other two. This was in the late 80's/early 90s. They told him he could sell them, but he could only sell them for what he paid for them in 1951. He would have taken a massive loss on them. He just kept them. Now, at this point, I'm not even sure who has the deed to these plots, as there are two empty ones there. I don't even know who to contact about the deed, or who owns them, or anything. No one in the family is planning on being buried there, as they are in a small town in NW Ohio. I guess they will just be empty for all time.

I remember reading newspaper sections that had "plots for sale" all the time. Somewhat related. A year ago I changed plots to be closer to my parents. It was no big deal because the plot was unsold so it was a simple paperwork switch at the funeral home. Not to disparage the funeral director who sold me the original plot I bought. She was a nice lady. But she sold me a plot that was not "closest to my parents" that I had wanted ? When in fact I found a plot much closer ! So I suggest don't take the word of someone else. Look for yourself at the cemetery map available space.

A friend's uncle recently died at a casino across state lines. Died in Nevada, was from Texas. My friend was telling me they wanted $20K to transport the body back over state lines ($3k to transport cremated remains, no including cost of cremation, so that's what they did). I knew it wasn't cheap to transport a body over state lines, but that number seems absurd. Is that a number set by the states involved or would that have been set by the funeral home, giving them the ability to shop around? And if that number is set by the state, what happens when you need to transport through multiple states? I know air transport is an option, I guess I just didn't figure it would potentially be cheaper for a destination relatively close.

Even though crown hill is selling theirs at $9000. each, they don’t want ours. We even tried to trade all 3 of them for a simple flat grave marker for her great grandfather! Not interested!
People are getting cremated more often …. Not interested in a $ 15000. Funeral.
I guess great grandfather will have to lay there with out a headstone for a while longer!

Larger people require larger graves which are usually placed in another section of cemeteries. Many employees are required to return to work with a letter from the mortuary & sometimes a funeral program since names of survivors are usually mentioned in the obituary. The FH should be glad to provide you with a letter & it's normal. I hope this helps.
