Operation Soteria - what happens when rape victims are supported?

  • Rape is one of the most devastating, traumatic crimes imaginable. And one where the chance of victims getting justice is painfully slim. While no one doubts it is a complex crime to investigate, the collapse of charge and conviction rates prompted the government to launch the 2021 Rape Review.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
One stark figure underpinning it all is that only 1.6% of rapes that were reported resulted in someone being charged that same year.
The Prime Minister of the day Boris Johnson apologised to victims and survivors for the failure of the criminal justice system and promised “we are fixing this”.
The pledge was to return to 2016 prosecution numbers. So what happened next? Initially it gets worse. The charge rate at the end of 2021 fell to 1.3%. Then it gets marginally better in 2022. It improves a little again by the end of 2023.
These figures just show cases where there is a charge by the end of that year - they will rise slightly as more investigations end.
Survivors and campaign groups welcome progress but say there is still a very long way to go.
Today the Home Office tells us things are moving ”in the right direction”, with more arrests, more cases referred to the Crown Prosecution Service and more prosecutions. That progress, they say, comes from Operation Soteria - a new approach to rape investigations - thousands of officers specially trained, much more focus on the suspect and less on the credibility of the victim.
This is the story of one Sussex Police investigation through the eyes of the victim and the detective constable who helped her get justice.
There are some distressing details from the beginning.

They don't take rape seriously if the allegations are made against celebrities or politicians. I hope they take it seriously from now on.

It isn’t taken seriously in general. Wasn’t long ago when the government had to publicly apologise to rape victims

Im sorry that this horrific assault happened. Im so pleased that the lady got justice and the man is in prison now! Refreshing to see some good police for once!
Unfortunately, when i reported sexual assault, the female detective said, "If Men harass you when you go out, dont go out stay at Home" the Police victim blame and take the side of the perpetrators. I begged the Police to obtain the CCTV footage, but she refused. She said its his word against yours! Absolutely No lines of enquiries were followed, no witness statements were taken and case was simply closed down without investigations.

We also need to allow victims to have privacy in recovery. If I had to turn over therapy notes to a perpetrator… let alone give police access to all my devices…(and they have a well documented history of abusing that access)… I don’t know if I could face those intrusions…

I'm pleased they caught asshole and more so the woman is being supported in her endeavour to rebuild herself.
ONE question though; Where the F was the was the Boyfriend?! Did he get knocked out or runaway???

That’s what I was thinking. Did she run off and the boyfriend get beat up? Or did the boyfriend run away? If the boyfriend ran off that would be fair if she ran off and left him to deal with the attacker alone.

It’s not just about communication, it’s about being believed. Victims of this crime have been treated horrifically in this country for a long time. Wasn’t long ago the government had to send out a public apology regarding this

      @mokhan8146 27 дней назад +1

@chloefrancesca_ But communication and being ''believed'' go hand in hand. There have been many women who ''claim'' they have been raped and sexually abused and later after all the research their claims where incorrect and they where basically lying. In the US in past many American women claimed they where ''raped'' by American men of color for example during the 1950s 60s and even 70s. I can assure 99.9% where lying and creating false stories....the remification of all of this is that sadly many men where brutally killed, murderd, lynched under a three and burned alive by a large mob of Wh1te American men and some women aswell. This all played into the false propaganda that American men of colour where ''rape monsters'' hunting wh1te american women. Wel in reality it was wh1te american men raping women left and right. So ''believing and communication'' are all part of the same coin.

@@mokhan8146 The fact the government had to issue a public apology means victims haven’t been believed even with evidence. It was acknowledged by the government that victims have been treated poorly and haven’t been protected by those who have the duty to do so. The whole attitude around this crime and the way police handle it is poor

I am your sister from Yemen, and by Allah I only spoke out of hunger and distress. My mother, my brothers, and I lessons and tears. We are in a situation that only God knows about. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs for those who brought us to this situation. By Allah Almighty, I did not write this appeal out of distress and distress. Poverty, O world, they have felt it So, I hope for you. By Allah Almighty, Lord of the Great Throne, he ate what I had in the house. By Allah, my brothers, he is my brothers by sitting in the house. Who has no food? By God, we are in a very difficult situation. We have 4 people entering the house, and my father has died, and there is no one who can depend on us and who lives in it.We live in a rented house because we cannot pay the rent we owe. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''' My brother, my first words are: I swear to God that I will not lie to you or deceive you. I am a Yemeni girl displaced from the war. My family and I live in a rented house in Al-Shahrab 20,000 Yemenis among us, and now we owe 60,000 for 3 months. The owner of the house is one of the people who does not have mercy, by God, my brother. He comes every day, insulting us, talking about us, and moving from the house to the street because we were unable to pay him the rent. The neighbors saw us crying and came back. They came back to talk to the neighbors and we were given the weekend. So we made him swear by God. He will take us out into the street. Have mercy on him and us. Our country is due to this war and we do not find food for our day, and my brothers and I live in a difficult life. Our father died, may God have mercy on him, and we have no one in this world who was with us in these harsh circumstances. My younger brothers went out into the street and saw...The neighbors eat and stand at their door in order to give them bread even if they break it. By God, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, they closed the door and expelled them and came back crying. They are dying of hunger. No one has mercy on them and a holiday is returned. I have made a living, and now if one of us helps us with a kilo of flour, I swear to God, I am dying of hunger. My brother, I am an alien to God. Then, I ask you to help me for the sake of God. I ask you, by God, to love goodness and to help me, even if you can, by messaging me on WhatsApp.On this number 00967716649494 and ask for the name of my card and send it and do not be late and may God reward you with all the best, my brothers Sagar, see how they are and help us and save us before they throw us out in the street, you will be lost or we will die of hunger. My family and I ask you, by God, if you are able to help us, do not be late and may God reward you well..`/--~«««~~♡~♡~♡~~•~•~♡~♡~~♡~♡~♡~♡♡♡~~~~: ~:~¡~¡~¡~;I.i.i.i.i.i. i.I.|-◖︻︻︻≫─
