      I think they should use some of the old circuit to extend the modern one. They already have run off at turn 4. They could put a chicane to the right to join the latter part of the old back straight, have the double left turns to a straight that rejoins the modern circuit meaning a possible extra overtake opportunity into the double right turns. Although there is no run off at the end of the old back straight. But the cars are safer now and you would have a much shorter straight to that corner and techpro barriers are put in street circuits in F1 that generally don't have much run off anyway.

  • @mschrappe
    @mschrappe 4 года назад +15

    Sensacional! I'm a great fan of this old circuit. Unfortunately here in Brazil the organizers have not planed a complete update of the track. When Senna got fund from the São Paulo's City mayor to bring F1 back, the current demands was to a shorter e safer track. As always here, they improvised. The Senna's trick was brilliant at the time. With a short budget was possible to remove length and hazards of the old track.
    In the following years and with complains of a group of local pilots, many times mayors promised to made a full track update bringing back the old circuit, but it never happened.
    With the rise of the FIA demands in terms of better security to the track and quality of the tarmac as well as superior structure for the teams and spectators, the private local organizer, that took responsibility of the event, choose the short way in the execution of the necessary work advancing over the old part of the "curva do sol" and "sargento' to built a parking lot, paddock areas as space for teams.
    In some years the scrutiny from FIA was even severe, many times unfair if being placed together with some tracks in the circuit. The race was in jeopardy in several occasions due to the high level of investment needed to accomplish the demands. There was simply not enough money.
    Despite that, as the event was and are a great success, the organizers did their magic and kept their word to the FIA, delivering the demands.
    As a part of that, "sargento" bend was completely erased and the material removed was used to land the inner lake. More buildings were built there.
    It's still possible to revive the old circuit keeping the present track and more, bringing up a new shorter option for local access categories.
    For that to happen, the old back straight would have to be shortened so the "curva 3" bend would begin earlier providing space for run off areas.
    The inner part between the todays back straight up to the "sol" bend would have to be filled with the structure for the teams and paddock areas to free all the space that are fully occupied nowadays, regaining the "sargento" sector area to the racetrack.
    The Senna's "S" in take and the present pit exit lane would be a interchangeable area to serve as pit exit to the old circuit, preserving the present layout would serve the present track, and a connection with the beginning of the "laranjinha" bend would have to be built to serve as link between the main straight and the shorter track version. The interchangeable area between "laranfinha" and the old "ferradura" bends would be kept as well, also to be used with the old and present versions of the track.
    As you can imagine a lot of money would be necessary. There is no interest from the organizers. A substantial part of the spectators doesn't know the old circuit, as they was born after the update took to the 1990's race, so they don't care, only the affectionate and passionate ones really mind with these.
    But as we saw with Paul Ricard, yes it is possible, the old circuit would be a little bit different but would still preserve the old glamour and spirit.
    To close the subject, only in this year F1 race people begin to talk about the short length of the track due to the last 2 races with the faster cars producing lap times below 1:10' ...
    As a local, I can say that only pressure from the FIA would make things change and is almost certain that it would not bring my suggestions to light, the exit would be a minor change using part of the old back straight, creating new intersections with the present track.
    A really shame. A great lost. In pilot's circles and talks is common to bring this subject and to hear that the lost of the old circuit is a shame, but... life goes on ...
    As a consolation we still can feel the track thrill in a variety of games... and imagine how great would be to have that track again ... in my opinion would be greater than Spa!
    That's all!

      @@mschrappe Excellent ideas, but as you said, there's no budget to pay for all of this. Even with the plans to sell the track to a private owner, it would demand an amount of money that no one is willing to spend. And don't forget that we are in Brazil, where motorsports are going in a downward spiral. Also, the 1:10 mark should not be beat for a few years from 2021 onward, as the cars are expected do be 4 to 5 seconds slower with the new rules. Spa is the only remanescent of the old tracks with higher distance, even tough it was also cut by half. The last great track that was cut was Hockenheim, to never return, as the "old" Interlagos. Auto racing has changed, safety measures were taken and with this, the circuits had to be ripped off. I think it's an acceptable price to pay for safer racing.

A few years ago there was nothing about it here but now we can find all 70's F1 races as well as many local championships footages also. The old track was kept until 1989 when this enormous reformulation was done due to security reasons and the new design had Ayrton Senna himself responsible for some ideas. Many local drivers in Brazil still miss the old Interlagos extremely defying design and were against this change. Fact is if not remolded we would have no F1 in Interlagos anymore

    In the mid 2000s, around '04 or '05, we could email or text comments to the Irish TV station that was covering the races. I texted a question during the Brazilian GP about what lap time the current cars (as in 2004/05 cars) would do if they raced on the old Interlagos circuit. Gary Anderson was an analyst on the commentary team back then and he reckoned that the mid 2000s cars would do a lap in under 2 minutes. Which is amazing speed compared to James Hunt's 2m 37.4s. So I suspect today's cars would probably lap the old circuit only about 8 to 10 seconds longer than Spa Francorchamps which is a kilometer shorter.

    I'm going to buck the trend of F1 RUclips "everything older is better" comments and say I prefer the new layout; I think they kept all the best parts of the old circuit and improved on the rest. There's no harm in having a smaller circuit if it still provides exciting racing and the Senna esses and tighter corners of the new layout provide greater overtaking opportunities. The old circuit with its series of long and open bends was very similar to a lot of other tracks at the time (although admittedly this is no longer the case).

      I agree with you in some stance. To me, the only problem with the modern layout is that F1 cars today can complete a lap in less than 1min10s, it became too short.
      I think they can make a new layout using some parts of the old track (like the big straight that remains untouched and still being used on drag races). Adding something around 900m to 1km this would fit better with the new cars in my opinion.

    Thumbs up for this great and very interesting video. This is the first onboard video I am watching. This layout exists for the PC version of Assetto Corsa as a free mod track that you can get on racedepartment.com. Judging from this video footage I can say that the circuit is very well represented in Assetto Corsa. Running it with Lauda’s Ferrari 321T is a lot of fun ! Thanks !

    The old circuit is all still there, as can be seen on Google Earth and Maps.
    To bring it back up to Grade II standard (enough for WEC, which would be good because of the huge grids they can get) would require the entirety of it not currently used to be resurfaced. The old Turn 3 would need reprofiling too, to give some runoff, which would be the removal, at least partially, of one of the lakes.
    The did a good job moving the old layout to the current one though. Much better than it could've been, as they had to make very very alterations.

    • @itsmebatman
      @itsmebatman 6 лет назад +42

      Looks interesting and challenging. But like many old race tracks it's too dangerous for modern F1. Seems like they tried to use all the area between the lakes to have as much racetrack as possible. And thus there is no runoff area anywhere. Heck, even the current layout is relatively dangerous as that massive crash some 15 years ago showed.
      In Germany we too have a classic race track in the Nordschleife. It's glorious. But you can't expect F1 to race there anymore. You'd have total carnage every year.

      It looks epic. I started fully watching f1 just after they went to Jaquapagara (boring & no atmosphere) & back to the new Interlagos, which was still epic. I remember still the crowd bouncing in the Grandstands. A South American Spa, especially when it rains.
