And 2) when the album was written there was a whole issue of rebels against communists, particularly in South America (which was and is still highly Catholic which ties in to the whole priest nun thing) being paid by the US government and partially tied in with drugs being brought in to the US to fund it. It’s not a specifically laid out connection in the album but at the time it came out most of those connections- anti US government feelings, drugs, and religion- were connections that anyone watching world news could have made.

I dunno if it was really to much of a spoiler. The fact that Mary is feeding his addiction is hinted at through lines, and that x is using drugs as a means to control. But I suppose at the same time these things become clearer after multiple listens.
@@ThomasJ_Music I think you can see how this album and the band had some influence on symphonic metal... they did a LOT of soundtrack work with Michael Kamen on a ton of movies... Real World from last action hero is a fantastic piece and worth a listen later
A few thoughts about earlier in the album when Nikki is decrying all the things he's disillusioned with in society: The media, religion, government, the rich, etc. I don't feel it's so much any of these institutions themselves that Nikki hates, but the unscrupulous INDIVIDUALS who USE and corrupt these things for their own gain (power, money, pleasure) regardless of the damage they inflict on others by doing so. Ironically, Dr. X, who always has an eye out for those whole vulnerabilities they can exploit and manipulate, falls into this category of people that Nikki despises.
This is so much fun (and not only because I am locked in my bloody house these days😂). Had one or two points which were covered already (the "suite" thing, the carving into arm part) but I thought you might enjoy the details going on in the choir/chanting at points in the song. It is from a Gregorian chant called "Dies Irae" which translates as "day of wrath" (or something similar). 2 of the last 3 lines say in English "How much trembling there will be ,When the judge comes". Quite fitting for the track by Queensryche. I suppose that is why they got called the "thinking man's heavy metal band"😁. Even the chanting fits the bloody story.
I'm really enjoying your first listen reaction to this epic album. The storyline is a lot to take in the initial time you hear it, but you're doing quite well! I can't help but pause your videos every few seconds while you express your take on the unfolding story so that I can correct something, or fill you in on details. It's kind of hard to keep this stuff in! But fortunately you can't hear me, so no harm done! I'd like to mention a strong feeling I've always gotten from The Mission (one of my favorites too), that I've never heard anyone else express. No spoilers here, just my take on this particular song: I feel Nikki is starting to loose faith in Dr. X and his motives. Nikki is idealistic and became involved with Dr. X because he wanted to make a positive difference in the world. But at this point in the story, He's SAYING that his "mission" will save the world, and change it, BUT the MUSIC ITSELF is saying the OPPOSITE. It isn't triumphant or uplifting music, the kind you might expect when someone is achieving a higher purpose, but instead the music is filled with REGRET and SORROW. I think in this song Nikki is trying to CONVINCE himself that his mission is still what he thought it was when he first started working for Dr. X. That said, QUEENSRYCE (original lineup) has been my favorite band, for so many reasons, for decades. Geoff, Scott, Eddie, Michael, and Chris were an incredible combination of musical, lyrical, and vocal talent. They are one of the few bands that are remarkably versatile and intense! I miss them so much, but am grateful for the music (and videos) that will always be with us. Even, yes even, The Queen of the Reich video. Who doesn't love it? Pure 80's.
I didn't like this song (suite sister Mary) first couple of times but now it's my favourite on this album.... The video to this is very dramatic. Worth look. I'm very much in awe of Pamala Moore
Greatest album ever by the greatest band ever with the greatest singer ever. Ive seen Queensryche 11 times and Geoff Tate 2 times. Never get old. Ryche On!
Definition of suite 1: RETINUE... the personal staff accompanying a ruler, diplomat, or dignitary on official business the personal accompanying a ruler, diplomat, or dignitary on official business. Also Geoff Tate is a Baritone with a 4 octave range.
Oh yeah, "Suite Sister Mary"...the crux of the Mindcrime album! Not too often are the long songs the best ones. Unless, of course, you're Iron Maiden. Anyways, good to see someone enjoying Queensryche like I do! Cheers from Houston, Texas USA!
So, having listened to OMC as much as I have, it's always been my own personal contention that during the song 'The Mission,' Nikki, after just having explained in the first two verses how much guilt he's beginning to feel about his crimes, how doubtful he's beginning to become about the Underground, and how close he feels to Mary at this point, actually confesses his sins to her for some kind of salvation (if this were a movie, I always imagined it happening during the solo). Honestly, I don't think Mary had any idea until his confession that Nikki was the killer, and upon finding out, realizes they're all pawns in Dr. X's game. When Dr. X realizes how close Nikki and Mary are getting, he tells Nikki, "Kill her."
Suite Sister Mary: somehow doctor X has found out that Nikki and Mary are starting to fall in love, which lessens the amount of control the doctor has over Nikki. He wants Mary dead so that she's no longer able to influence Nikki.
You're doing great. I remember trying to interpret this album the first time I heard it. And this was before the internet so we had no where to go to look up the answers to questions. I just had to get into long discussions with varying opinions. It was great fun though. And just letting you know, I did as you told (scolded) me to do - to follow my own advice. I came back. Thanks for reminding me not to be a hypocrite.
Ahahahaha yes stay away from the comments some are wrong others are an interpretation . As for why it's called "suite sister Mary" is because it's a song made in the form of a "suite(long form)" and also how Nikki sees Mary .Nikki sees her as sweet and innocent but also sees her in a maternal way as some sort of savior to him . He knows her past but he also sees how he found her as a "nun" and if she could be saved maybe she can save him . If you ever want to know more just reply .
You probably shouldn't watch the O:MC videos the band put out until you're done with the whole album. There are a couple things in them that visually clarify how Dr. X operates, which isn't really a spoiler, but would be fun to discuss afterwards. Also the band had a contest regarding one aspect of the story, and they incorporated a little bit of misdirection (again visually) in the videos.
I could be completely wrong, but I always thought that Mary was a 16 year old runaway that got caught up in the street life...basically hooking/S&M show to survive, and Father William was basically a customer in a sense and that the "Sister Mary" title was more of an ironic nickname. So, I don't see her "with" father William. I think she got caught up in the same Revolution moment that Nikki did. Doctor X saying to "Kill Mary...she's a risk...and get the priest as well" has me thinking that either Doctor X is just as disgusted with his behavior as the rest of us or that his disdain for anything authoritarian needs to go (ie: fascists, politicians, religious leaders, etc). Maybe Mary is getting too close to Nikki that Doctor X's influence over him is waining and that he needs Nikki to kill her to re-establish his dominance over Nikki. Again, I could be completely off base.
I was surprised at the previous comments for Suite Sister Mary as I've always seen it as the weak point on the album. Not to take away from the wonderful Pamela Moore...but it seems less a song and more a way to advance the story. If you ever get to Mindcrime II there is a sequel song/suite of sorts that I enjoy much more. I'd be interested on your thoughts on two other concept albums, King Diamond's "Abigail" and KISS' "(Music From) The Elder"
It is also not as bad as some QR fans made it out to be. Plenty of great tracks on there. There was bound to be naysayers after this masterpiece I guess.
Ummm, I never got that Mary worked for Dr. X. Anyone else questioning that too? I think simeone just led Tommy astray and unfortunately that's going to make him try to piece that together and possibly harm the overall experience for him. Please, people. Stop. Just let him go. He's been getting it dead on. Uggghh!
:/ ok I’ll have to watch out for this then. When I heard him say we have to stop him (Dr X) and asking her to choose, I thought that’s what the guy in the comments was referring to. I’ll take this bit with a pinch of salt then 👍
When Tommy is finished with the album, that's when we need to "meet" and throw around all our insights, and thoughts about this story. Geoff, being pretty much solely responsible for the lyrics, did a great job of not verbalizing EVERYTHING. There's still plenty left to extrapolate.
Well, Dr. X tells Nikki "we'll send you someone to bring you what you need", and Mary does just that. There are several references in different songs that support that she does indeed work for Dr. X.
@@purplekat5864 thanks for your insight. I guess I interpreted that as his herion "need". Okay... I HATE to discuss this in any more depth though because I don't want to influence Tommy's analysis. But I'm always appreciative of someone else's perspective on things. I agree with above comment, let's "meet" at the end. Until then, rock on baby. 🖤
@@ThomasJ_Music I don't believe Nikki was asking MARY to choose between him and Dr. X. It's between HIM and Dr. X. Nikki said: "There's one more thing left to see, will it be him or me? There's one more candle left to light." Think about what that last line means. Also, when you look at Mary's responses to what Nikki's telling her, she seems caught up in remembering the abuses she's endured (Father William taking her on the alter, etc.) and her own overwhelming pain...
A Suite is shorter pieces of music put together into one piece. From "Spreading the disease": Sixteen and on the run from home,Found a job in Times Square.Working live S&M shows.Twenty-five bucks a fuck. And John's a happy man- She wipes the filth away. And it's back on the streets again. Father William saved her from the streets. She drank the lifeblood from the saviour's feet. She's Sister Mary now, eyes as cold as ice. He takes her once a week, On the alter like a sacrifice.
Listen closer to previous songs. You'll understand what Mary was, what father william was and did to her. Ill give ya a hint. He takes her once a week on the alter like a sacrifice.
Possible SPOILERS: READ LATER!!! My thoughts: while it's true, Mary could be a link back to Dr. X for the authorities, I always took the order to kill her as a distraction. The primary target being, Father William. Since Nikki is emotionally and physically (drug provider) attached to Mary, it would dominate his thoughts; and the, oh by the way "get the priest as well", as a "secondary" job wouldn't seem important to the overall plan to Nikki.
Not only is DR. X using Nikki's drug habit to keep him in the fold, but if you think about it, somebody under the influence of drugs is much more pliable for brainwashing which is a cult leader's goal in the end. Also, I forgot just how epic Suite Sister Mary is. After following The Mission. Are you kidding me? That's like side one of Moving Pictures.

No spoilers here, just my take on this particular song:
I feel Nikki is starting to loose faith in Dr.
Pure 80's.
Mary sung by Pamela Moore from Seattle.
Sister Mary was the runaway doing live s&m shows that father William rescued her from and she became sister Mary
I'm up late, and can't find the beginning of this thread, but top 3 albums all time... And so enjoying... You enjoying this tapestry!
Ryche On!
Definition of suite
1: RETINUE... the personal staff accompanying a ruler, diplomat, or dignitary on official business the personal accompanying a ruler, diplomat, or dignitary on official business.
Also Geoff Tate is a Baritone with a 4 octave range.
This is the greatest most epic album ever!!
There’s a live video of this song she toured with them she was awesome as was the rest of the band and the stage effects were killer
The live version of this song is great
Suite Sister Mary: somehow doctor X has found out that Nikki and Mary are starting to fall in love, which lessens the amount of control the doctor has over Nikki.
Glad you’re enjoying the videos so far
Ahahahaha yes stay away from the comments some are wrong others are an interpretation . As for why it's called "suite sister Mary" is because it's a song made in the form of a "suite(long form)" and also how Nikki sees Mary .Nikki sees her as sweet and innocent but also sees her in a maternal way as some sort of savior to him .
He knows her past but he also sees how he found her as a "nun" and if she could be saved maybe she can save him . If you ever want to know more just reply .
For another AMAZING concept album to react to PLEASE do W.A.S.P.'s The Crimson Idol. You will not regret it!
I always wondered why this was never made a movie.
Digarmo and Wilton are really underrated players.
I highly, highly suggest listening to "The Warning" album. Better, darker than Mindcrime.
It's the SLEEPER song..
No other reactor has really done this song. And they are missing out
I could never understand why no one has reacted to this song. It's just simply incredible, as is the whole album
Suite sister many Mary is a highlight but I prefer Eyes of a stranger
Another good concept album is Iron Maiden Seventh son of a seventh son. A reaction to that one would be great!
IMO The Mission is the best song on Operation: Mindcrime.
Dr X the preist
This is not a spoiler, just an interesting fact. The last song was the first one written for the album. That is all.
Wow this is Iron maiden🤯
react to what the dead men say by trivium :) it’ll blow you away
Dr. X is using the church as a front for his underground operation.
There should be made as a movie it was an original concept by Geoff Tate and Chris DeGarmo
Has anyone mentioned that there is an Operation: Mindcrime II....? Although, it's not as good as this one, it IS a sequel.
It is also not as bad as some QR fans made it out to be. Plenty of great tracks on there. There was bound to be naysayers after this masterpiece I guess.
Father William works for Dr X, Mary is unknowingly tied to Dr X through father William.
From "Spreading the disease":
Sixteen and on the run from home,Found a job in Times Square.Working live S&M shows.Twenty-five bucks a fuck.And John's a happy man-
She wipes the filth away. And it's back on the streets again.
Father William saved her from the streets. She drank the lifeblood from the saviour's feet. She's Sister Mary now, eyes as cold as ice.
He takes her once a week, On the alter like a sacrifice.
What you missed in an earlier song was Father William taking Sister Mary on the alter once a week like a sacrifice.
Some areas of the story are grey. Spoiler of Mary working for Dr. X was wrong, in my opinion.
Listen closer to previous songs. You'll understand what Mary was, what father william was and did to her. Ill give ya a hint. He takes her once a week on the alter like a sacrifice.
Kind of a Gregorian chant thing
MILKSHAKE!
The mission is the best song. Or I dont believe in love. Or....the rest of the lot. Lol
