AWESOME video!! It's a damn shame that you don't have any more, cuz this was really good and I wanna see more like it. You make this game look easy. You have a great gimmick here, mastering the game first, then reviewing it. Looking forward to your TF IV and Forgotten Worlds videos!
+Westapo: Video Games and Loud Music Thanks bro! Glad you enjoyed it. Check out my video on Whip Rush also. Although that was my first video and it's mostly just my 1CC with a little background at the beginning. But yeah, more videos will be incoming soon!
Thanks so much! Yeah the death montage was the most fun (and the most work) to put together. I have lots of ideas for other montages in future episodes also :)
Awesome man. Love the channel. Just so you know, in the ending before the last picture where you can control the eyelid. You can do the same with the previous picture but the hand with peace sign moves
This is Megs from RGG, thanks for the link on Twitter buddy. Great video, some superb production values here plus the gameplay skills ain't half bad either. I subscribed and will really get into these fantastic treats over the bank holiday weekend here in the UK.
What a fantastic channel, and a brilliant game, you are indeed the shmup master.I just loved all the info and time you've put into this.I haven't played this for a few year now am I right thinking you can make the pilot wave in the cockpit before the crazy winking at the end.very funny thank you.
+Dave Penn Thanks so much! I only wish I could have done more in the year and a half since I released this video. I've been promising a new episode forever. But this time, for real, I have a new one in the works. Here is a sample of what is to come soon: ruclips.net/video/PaEjG3eC4D4/видео.html
Whoa, you are most definatelly THE shmup mater!!! very impressive . This is instantly my new favorite chanel. Is there a new video being released soon i hope? Gleylancer would be a mind blowing "no death" run IMO . Great job and thank you for your HARD work!
Thanks man! And yeah, I do have two videos in the works actually. I'm working on Forgotten Worlds and the Indie SHMUP Hydorah (which is insane). I know it's been a while but I haven't forgotten about this channel. Just busy running a website now! Mark my words though, I will return!
Great video. This is the first game i ever played on the megadrive. It is also my favourite shmup of all time. The visuals, soundtrack and gameplay is just awesome. I always preferred this to the more popular thunderforce 4.
Damn man, your first "real" video and you're already better than I am! Glad to see all your effort has paid off and resulted in this fantastic video! I really need to go out and buy up these Thunderforce games before the prices shoot up. Thanks again for the shout-out and I really look forward to your next episode, however many months off that may be! And whenever I put out that Japan-only shmups episode, I'll definitely give your channel a recommendation somewhere in the video. Anyway, for the garbled voices section, I thought the hunter power-up sounded a lot like "hymen." Maybe that shows where my mind is at... XD
Hymen, haha. Funny how it sounds different to everyone :) And if your wondering, the Thunder Force series is already somewhat expensive. Thunder Force 3 is minimum $30 and I just bought the Mega Drive version of 4 for $60 on eBay (grumbles). Although I think 2 is a bit cheaper. But 2 is part side scroller and part top down so it's a bit different. And I've never played 5 and 6 but I hear they are good. As always, thanks Jimmy!
Awesove video! I'm really looking forward to what you upload next! And if you want to bransh out to the PC check out Raptor call of the shadows. It's one of my favourites and I've never seen a good review/playthrough of it anywhere :'(
Well done! I'm going to attempt the same feat soon. I used to play this on the first two difficulties and was able beat the game repeatedly, but I never did with Mania. I think I can do it with a little practice. In that final photo (where you played with the blinking action), I always thought the guy kissing Shelly in the lower-right corner looked like George Michael in his Faith video.
I just picked up Thunder Force II, which doesn't look quite as good, but I'm having fun with it so far. I know you haven't had much time to do another one of these, but I'd love to see more!
Thanks! And that is interesting that you start on Gorgon. I used to start on Gorgon when I was a kid simply because I loved the music and cool flame effects so much lol. But for strategic reasons, I can't see a reason to start there. But yeah, the music on the Gens rocks! I played through Thunder Spirits not too long ago and the music is just so lacking. Thunder Force 3 is one of those ports that looks and sounds better on the Genesis rather than the SNES (which is usually the other way around). Glad you enjoyed the vid. I've got 3 more on the way :)
I think 'Sever' is actually a mistranslation to English in both the game and manual, from the word 'Saber'. Note that the TF3 ship is playable in TF4 in the Thunder Force Gold Pack 2 release, where it too is written as 'Saber'.
Wow, I did not know that. But considering how bad the rest of the translation is in the game, it actually makes quite a bit of sense. I just loved those crazy voice samples... A lot of people told me that they weren't crazy about that section of the vid, but I did enjoy creating it... :)
I've only ever 1cc'd one shmup in my life so far, this game on normal and hard, the latter achieved just earlier tonight. Gonna start grinding on mania mode this week and I should get it soon! I wish I liked most other shmups as much as this or R-Type. For me, a shmup isn't about scores but fun powerups. Both Thunder Force and R-Type just have much more interesting powerups than most shmups out there. Everyone says Gyoung/Wings of Wor is great, MUSHA is great, Gaiares is great - but to me, they're just not as fun, so I'm not compelled to beat them even casually, let alone trying to 1cc on the hardest modes.
Watched all your videos today. Wanna see more. Thunder Force 3 is considered an “easier” shmup. A great place for beginners. Let’s see some Truxton! Brutally hard! You can do it!
Thanks man! I noticed you commenting on videos here and there, I really appreciate that! And yeah, I've tackled some easier ones like Thunder Force 3 and Life Force, and harder ones like Thunder Force 4 and Insector X. My next goal is Axelay on Hard, which quite honestly isn't that bad, until the final stage that is... in which case it becomes downright insane!
Lol @ the voice samples. The most ridiculous one has to be the Shield from TF2, I have no idea what the announcer is saying but sounds like 5 or 6 different words..!
Did you use HDV 8S Converter for this video? I have question. If i give this box HDMI signal, it will be just passthrough? Without "stabilization"? I search cheap video processor for OSSC.
IceBoxFreez No, I used this one: www.amazon.com/dp/B00DI6HTOI/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_apa_FfGhzb6YNNDS3 Also, I've since upgraded to a Framemeister and Extreme Cap U3 which I've used on every video since this one. The footage looks WAY better.
I would love a video of the top shumps for the genesis as I am a fan of both the genesis and shumps 😏... Also what controller do you use? 3 button 6 button or arcade stick?
SHMUP Master It never disappoints. Your charisma is off the chart. Good job. I'm doing Ducktales this week. Nothing compare to this but you got this bird in the mood for Thunderforce 5.
I just bought the same upscaler according to Fudoh - retrogaming.hazard-city.de/ Just wondering if you had any issues with the image position? I'm getting an excess of overscan on the right and a slightly cut off image on the left when outputting 240p (SNES/Genesis) to my elGato HD.
Well in the two years since I released this video I've upgraded to a Framemeister. There is really no comparison, the Framemeister blows it away in terms of clarity and ability to make the image exactly how you want it. In your case, I think that scaler may be slightly different depending on your TV. I had a stretched image with it that I had to fix in post to put it in the proper aspect ratio. I don't have that problem with the Framemeister though. If you can afford one, I'd highly recommend it.
Reckoned this would be the best comment to post an observation (considering capture/scaling/recording being the focus). Was linked to this video whilst comparing results of different scalers, capture cards and etc. I do not know if it was the way the game was designed or an oddity with the capture, but between transitions (when screen goes blank) you can see residual artefacts. Most noticable was @13:17, its almost like a shadow of the title screen art. Reminds me of the old CRT burn in some way.
I can make out the "claw" voice sample (although it sounds more like "clo") but I never got the shield one, which I think you didn't play in this video. It sounds like "Hey!" to me.
There's something about most remixes of 16-bit (and 8-bit) music is that most of the time you wind up with something "missing". Very rarely do they sound just as good.
I agree! Although I do love the occasional remix... but not in the game itself. The Saturn remixed music just sounded "off" to me... With that tune I compared particularly it was just weak in comparison. The Genesis version had POWER!
@@THESHMUPMASTER i think it's japan exclusive along with turbo outrun. i much prefer TF4 over TF3, but i imagine it would look awesome in 3D with all the parallax scrolling
I watched the 4 version of this game and was BLOWN AWAY by the stage 5 SPACE FIELD! I THOUGHT 4 looked worse than 3 and never bought it. NEVER saw it in motion at the time and now kicking myself in the ass for thinking it was a downgrade from 3.
I post high quality shmup videos too, maybe you want to check them out, Shmupzilla is tagged int he title of every one I've done. Check out my exceed 2nd, it is 60 fps if you use chrome to watcxh it!
The Snes sound is way better imo, but that's all subjective. It is amazing how good the genesis sound is in this game considering how crappy the genesis sound hardwre is, imo again. When I first played it I was very disappointed, as I loved thunderforce 2 so much, with the overhead + sidescroling mixed levels, I was hoping they wouold use the same formula. I loved the variety which they removed in this one.
Ha ha, you are obviously as biased about the SNES as I am about the Gens :P. The only issue I see with the Genesis sound really is that the voices were garbled a lot of the time. But honestly there are so many Genesis games with great music and sound. Toejam and Earl (which amazingly had crystal clear voice samples), Earthworm Jim, The Phantasy Star Series, The Shining Force Series, Contra Hard Corps, The Shinobi games, the Streets of Rage series, The Sonic series and not to mention the Thunder Force series (I used the Thunder Force 4 intro music for my intro and it ROCKS!). So saying the Genesis has poor sound when there are so many great games with exceptional sound means that a lot of developers are simply lazy. I could make the same argument with the SNES and it's "tinny" sounding music and muted sound samples. But then again, there were companies like Square who managed to push the SNES to it's limit and give us music that sounded of damn near orchestral quality. The same goes for the Genesis with games like Streets of Rage where guys like Yuzo Koshiro made that sound board sound like you were in a dance club. Bottom line: each system had it's strengths and weaknesses and each system had different hardware which led to the differences in graphics, sound etc. They both rock in my opinion. But also in my opinion, having played Thunder Force 3 and Thunder Spirits, the Genesis wins hands down in almost every category. The reason? I think Tecnosoft just got lazy and didn't take advantage of what the SNES had to offer. Just IMO :).
SHMUP Master Indeed biased, but biased because I find that more of the Snes games imo sound way better to me. And to be clear where I come from, I bought a genesis first and only got a SNES a few years later, so my opinion has come my experience with both systems. There are lots of Genesis games with great sound sure, but I feel many more per capita that sounded bad to me. Street Fighter 2, mortal Kombat 1 and 2, last battle come to mind and many others. I especially found major improvements when comparing direct ports where a game is on both systems, the Snes nearly always sound better. Lost vikings, MK1,2. Street fighter, others. No worries though, I love both systems still! I got ever drives for both + turbo 16, all hooked up to my 36 inch sony CRT and it blows me away how AWESOME they all look on the crt, I was shocked after so many years of emulation on the pc or emulating them on the Wii on HD tvs, then last year hooking up the crt.. WOW. I got a homemade turbo booster cable for the tg16 too, which gives it composite and is only $40 shipped from ebay. (official tg16 turbo boosters run $100+. Amazing video you got here, I'm looking forward to more.
***** Haha no problem man! I also bought a Genesis first and then a SNES when it came out in 1991 so I had a lot of experience with both. But I get what your saying (although I disagree with Street Fighter 2, I think the music and sound on the Gens is great, although the voices were a bit scratchy). But yeah, usually when a game was released on both systems, with the exception of a few games, the SNES version generally had better sound. I checked out your channel and watched a few of your SHMUP vids. Pretty nice man! The footage of the newer games looks great! Although on the older stuff you would benefit with a SCART to HDMI coverter if you are looking for top picture quality. I noticed particularly on your Battle Squadron vid that the footage is blurry which is usually a composite cable issue. You just can't get great quality footage from composite IMO. But then again I don't use CRT's anymore and prefer the nice, clear look of SCART to HDMI on my 65" LCD :). But thanks so much for all the compliments! I am planning on continuing this but just those 2 videos I did took me months to complete. I have already recorded the run for my third video but am still scripting and working on the layout. I'm crazy busy but it will get done sooner or later ha ha.
SHMUP Master It's funy you said about me using scart converter for better quality, but axctually I recorded all my shmup footage with emulators for the retro games, so they are what they are. I capture with uber high quality and only compress once, so it is what it is. The steam pc opnes of course not emulated. I am going to post another new steam one pretty soon, it is really amazing called Danmaku Unlimited. I hoped you checked out my "Castle of Shikigami" vids, I worked really hard on those, the game is brutal. I also hope for your channel that you don't limit yourself to only perfect runs, merely posting some very good runs for some games will rapidly increase the rate of videos to see. I love watching good shmup videos from skilled players recorded in high quality. Many people on RUclips who are really good at smashups but suck at maximizing quality are on youtube, like having perfect runs but pointing the camera at the screen with a crappy camers etc.
23:00 I think I see why they removed this level. This looks like if you take the wrong turn you just die. Not even RNG, just plain trolling from the devs and not just in 1 spot
Nobody could rock the Genesis sound like Technosoft. Nobody.
Maybe toaplan

Awesome show!! Such great production. I'm sure any shmup fan will love this. Keep em comin!
Thanks so much! That is one of my goals! :)
I love where this series is going already with only two episodes!
Thanks so much! I have many many ideas in the pipeline :)
Great video SHMUP Master! The death montage was priceless. Absolutely loved it. Keep it up, will be supporting you from the sidelines!
Thanks so much! Yeah the death montage was the most fun (and the most work) to put together. I have lots of ideas for other montages in future episodes also :)
Hey man just listened to your interview on Electric Underground and liked it so im gonna go back and watch all your old vids, loving them so far!
Seibu Freak Thanks so much!
Excellent video! I'm totally with you on the Megadrive version being the best.
Thanks man! The Genesis/Megadrive really is the definitive version of the game IMO!
Awesome man. Love the channel. Just so you know, in the ending before the last picture where you can control the eyelid. You can do the same with the previous picture but the hand with peace sign moves
This video is so awesome i cant describe it. Im a TF lover myself, ill keep track of your channel sir!

the AC means arcade, it's a common Japanese abbreviation. thanks for the great video
AWESOME RUN MAN ,this was my fave game on genesis
Awesove video! I'm really looking forward to what you upload next!
And if you want to bransh out to the PC check out Raptor call of the shadows.
It's one of my favourites and I've never seen a good review/playthrough of it anywhere :'(
Remember, don't let Lemmings drive spaceships. They'll run into some stupid crap and blow the ship up.
Good job! Now I need this game! You are the SHMUP Master!!!!
Thanks! And you should totally buy it!
I subbed cause i saw you were still active. Rock on!
Well done! I'm going to attempt the same feat soon. I used to play this on the first two difficulties and was able beat the game repeatedly, but I never did with Mania. I think I can do it with a little practice.

Man, I'm your fan! GREETINGS FROM BRAZIL!
Awesome video mother Shmuper!
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!
Man your stuff rocks! I'd love to see you do Verytex for Mega Drive!
Thanks! And I've heard of Verytex but never played it.. maybe one of these days :)
Nice, i liked the show!
And i agree with you about everything, keep going!
New subscriber here.
Thanks! I've been busy but episode 3 is in the works! :)
Nice channel! I can't wait until you get to CAVE shooters.
Yes, I have heard so much about these CAVE shooters...
I just picked up Thunder Force II, which doesn't look quite as good, but I'm having fun with it so far. I know you haven't had much time to do another one of these, but I'd love to see more!
I always start my playthrough on Gorgon
Nice vid, i'd agree, the Genesis version of Gorgon's music is the best out of the three
No prob and i can't wait
Ah, AC just means "Arcade." As in "Arcade Version." Good stuff on this video, Thunder Force is great!
Good scaling fx from the genny hardware at the end
I've only ever 1cc'd one shmup in my life so far, this game on normal and hard, the latter achieved just earlier tonight. Gonna start grinding on mania mode this week and I should get it soon! it's really impressive how much they improved the graphics for tf4
tf3 still pretty though
great video :)
Thanks! :D
Quality vid sir
Thanks! :D
Hey, I'm looking forward to episode 3, but, will you ever play M.U.S.H.A, and, what game is next? :)
Best TF soundtrack imho.

IceBoxFreez No, I used this one: www.amazon.com/dp/B00DI6HTOI/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_apa_FfGhzb6YNNDS3

They same inside, thanks. It will be my temporary video processor. Until new Micomsoft unit, probably.
I would love a video of the top shumps for the genesis as I am a fan of both the genesis and shumps 😏... Also what controller do you use? 3 button 6 button or arcade stick?
Tommy Kindle That is actually a really good idea! And I use the standard 6 button controller.
Watching the SHMUP Master Episode 2: Thunder Force 3. This is Chicken's favorite Video game walkthrough of the month. Check it out.
Thanks Chicken! I really put my all into it! :)

Clocktown Television Thanks Chicken as always! I try :)
I always thought the voice samples said (in order) this:
Lever, Lander, Raid, Pirate, Hundred and No / Load
Wow.. reading those off in my head said in that crazy voice totally makes sense! lol
lol

I heard! And maybe since Sega bought the Technosoft IP we'll get another Thunder Force game! One can hope anyway...
41:00 you can manipulate his peace sign with c as well
Please tell me you're going to do Bio-Hazard Battle.
It's been on the agenda since I released this video.. which was like 4.5 years ago.. I'll get to it eventually... :D

Pretty sure the AC meant "arcade". Thunderforce Arcade "AC". At least I always assumed that.
I don't find any copy of thunder force 3 from psx
Yeah that was my bad. It was only on the Saturn I believe.
I got:
Saver
Lather
Wang
Thyroid
Hover
No!

I suck at all versions of this game and #4 #5 I can at least get to the end boss.

***** Interesting. What capture software are you using? I use fraps for my emulated stuff and it comes out crystal clear.
Thunderforce 3 > Thunderforce 4.
Really? You think so? Not a popular opinion... :P
Fire is the worst weapon
23:00 I think I see why they removed this level. This looks like if you take the wrong turn you just die. Not even RNG, just plain trolling from the devs and not just in 1 spot
Stage 4 has the best music
