  • Griffith's torture is a pivotal point in Berserk's story, as it is preceded by Guts' departure and was succeeded by the Eclipse.
Geiffith is kept alive for an year, during which he had been heavily tormented through physical torture, which consequently resulted in a broken mental state.
His torturer seems to enjoy it. He does it for the fun of it. And that's why the king of Midland chose him.
All actions seem unforgivable after Griffith's torture. His, those the king, those of his comrades, and most importantly Guts. Having been through such a horrible experience, one finds it hard to feel anything less than malice and vengeance.
From the point of view of Griffith, it becomes more understandable, why he would do such a horrendous act, like sacrificing his own comrades during the Eclipse.

I think people forget Griffith's lowest point wasn't in the dungeon, if it was, the behelit would have found him there no matter what. In the dungeons, Griffith still had the hope of being saved; his lowest point was realizing that, even after being saved, he would never be able to live a normal life again, not just that his dream was lost, but his hopes of returning to what he had before his imprisonment were impossible

To me the lowest point for him was when Guts and Casca were speaking about leaving together outside the carriage he was being kept in. These are his two closest friends and lieutenants, and him having to listen to them abandon his 'dream' IN REAL TIME, while being robbed of any ability to keep them, was utterly devastating. It's the first time we see any real hatred in his eyes in context to Guts or Casca

I just find it curious that folks refer to Tolkien in discussions about works like Berserk and say “of all things,” perhaps not fully understanding that The Hobbit, but even more so the much more mature LOTR was an exploration of human nature under trial by a traumatized war veteran trying to maintain his hope in humanity despite all he had seen. I think it makes perfect sense that there’s a continuity between Tolkien’s work and Berserk, especially in terms of people’s various responses to power. I feel like people neglect to mention how his future is pretty much gone. Griffith was a man of extreme drive and determination. His whole life was based on his future and his drive to make it to that castle, that position of power he saw as a kid. With his tendons and tongue cut, he not only had no ability to communicate, but also no ability to move or ever wield a sword again. Not only was his plan completely destroyed, any future prospect of him reaching his dream, which he spent his whole life trying to achieve, was destroyed as well.

    • @srwilsonmr5924
      @srwilsonmr5924 Год назад +83

What I find ironic is that Griffith brought this great error upon himself. He already had everything handed to him, he was one step from victory but he decided to throw it all away because his narcissistic and controlling personality couldn't admit that something was out of his control (Guts leaving and looking for a dream for himself, and Casca loving Guts). So much so that when he was arrested, he blamed Guts for what happened and didn't recognize that it was his own mistake that brought him to that situation.

    • @alphaanimates2310
      @alphaanimates2310 Год назад +40

@@srwilsonmr5924 Interesting take. I think Miura wanted to highlight this dichotomy of Guts and Griffith. Everybody looked up to Griffith as a leader, including Guts, but the difference with Guts is that he knew he had to forge his own destiny. Griffith seemed to regard everyone in the Band of the Hawks in a friendly way, but he always kept them at a certain distance away from him. Griffith seems estranged from the group in some parts, being so "holy" and absorbed in his own dream that it seemed like he couldn't engage with anything else. The relationship between Guts and Griffith, however, was different. Guts and Griffith were on the same level in combat skill, until the end where Guts earned the right to pursue his dream by beating Griffith. When Guts left him, and the resulting series of events led to Griffith with the behelet, Griffith reflects on his own stupidity. By jumping the gun and sleeping with the kings daughter, he had destroyed his own future by wanting to feel like he was in control. "You're the only one who made me forget my dream" (man that part is so fucking good, goosebumps from it) is a line where Griffith simultaneously blames Guts and himself. "Made me forget my dream" is kind of an oxymoron, as Guts' only wish was to make his own dream, not to disrupt Griffiths. Ultimately I think the Golden Age arc is a reflection on unobtainable dreams, and the impact one persons dream can have on another's. When you think about politics, one mans pursuit of political power can be driven into the ground due to a different man with a similar dream. Griffith held a dream which shone brightly, resonating through his holy character and his luscious white hair which was as iconic to his person as his determined spirit. Despite Griffith's relentless ambition, Guts, another character who is incredibly similar in drive and courage to the antagonist, was able to offset it with a simple swipe of his sword. Berserk is the manga about dreams, and it shows that the castles we look towards as shimmering ideals in our heads, are no more real than those in the heads of others ---which, at any given moment, may be willing to destroy your castle, in the realization of obtaining their's.

All of what happened to Griffith is horrible... but he chose that path. He wanted to self-destroy himself, but I think he didn't make the calculations right. He probably didn't think he'll be rotting away in the most despicable dungeon of Midland for a whole year.
Still, he made his choice. Neither Casca, nor Guts chose all the misery they had to endure at Griffith's hands. Griffith had everything in his hands... and decided to throw it all into the gutter.
And then, when Guts and Casca started to have something of their own, he stole it.
So, sorry, no sympathy for him here.

    • @lennypensante5309
      @lennypensante5309 Год назад +249

Nah, Griffith never wanted to "self destroy himself" nor did choices with that motive. What caused his downfall was that his humanity and love for guts and casca endangered his dream, they made him irrational, as the video says, he couldn't be stoic and achieve his goal because Guts had a hold too big on him, that caused all what happened that year in the prison.
And he made the deal with the Godhand after his body and mind were very deteriorated + the godhand showing him all kind of visions to manipulate him and make him make the deal.
Nothing after Griffith turns into Femto is justifiable, but before of that, his mistakes were human and understandable.

He knew he would never get t he throne, He already know the king of Midland was infatuated with his daughter and would never give her hand to anyone.
The only one preventing Griffith from falling to dispair was Guts.
His act of self destruction was a mixture of suicide and giving the king the middle finger for not giving her daughter hand. He probably just seduced the princess and had sex wwith her only out of scorn for the king. as a self destructive final middle finger to himself, the king, and everything.
He wanted the princess yeah, but as the way to the throne, but that was impossible because the king was too interested in making the princess his new wife some day.

The more you tend to fuck around, the more likely you are to find out.
Griffith not only lost in a fair duel to Guts, (in which both agreed to the conditions of Griffith's lost would result in Guts' freedom), not only did he decide of his own volition to throw it all out the window and take Charlotte (knowing it was treason), he also had the brilliant idea to confront the king about her mid-torture and taunt him. He is a fantastic character, but everything this guy did is the reason he was thrown in the worst possible situation. He was an amazing leader and an incredible fighte and strategist, but just as incredibly weak minded. It only took a few decisions to throw everything he had out the window, and not even once did he ever take accountability for his actions, instead taking all of his hatred and suffering out on those closest to him, giving them the worst possible deaths and cursed existences to the only ones who survived.

This was 100% HIS OWN FAULT.
The lack of accountability from Griffith is sickening. How on earth did he have such a huge meltdown to the point that he began acting insanely just because Guts left him? Has he always been this mentally weak? If that is the case, then he wouldn't have made a very good king. He doesn't have what it takes.
Guts left him NOT when he was down and needed help. He left him when he was the 2nd most powerful person in the country, after the king. All of his enemies were already taken care of by Guts. All he had to do to achieve his dream of having his own country was just to live quietly until the king dies of old age, he can then marry the princess and take over the kingdom. He could even devise a plan to make that process faster, it would have been easy for him to do at the position he was in. But no, he had to act like a fool instead to satisfy his own ego.
Griffith had ONE easy job left to do. I cannot believe that he actually screwed up something so simple. This pathetic failure alone disqualifies him from becoming a true king. But that is what makes the story of Berserk so good because it exposes a very deep part of human nature that we don't see often and he is only human after all and not a mentally strong one at that. Reading the manga up to that point it REALLY appears that he was better than this. He wasn't.

It was one of darkest concepts in fantasy that I've ever seen but at the same time it was also very real.
It's also very sad how Griffith was so attached to Guts, but the main reason why Guts left him was that he actually thought that Griffith doesn't think of him as a true friend. He really had nothing to prove and if he wouldn't have left he could have saved him in time.

A lot of these comments are kind of baffling to see. There's a lot of repeating the same dull lines about how Griffith can't be justified in his actions, that he deserves no sympathy, everything occurred by his own hubris, and is without a doubt 100% evil. I would have hoped that the Berserk fandom had a little more nuanced handling of the material. I think it's missing the point. "Justifying" his actions is not the point here, and definitely not the goal of this video, either. The video does a great job breaking down the complexities and the painful, conflicting humanity of Griffith pre-Eclipse and ultimately his choice. He was not some one-dimensional villain since day one, and his experiences pre-Eclipse are sympathetic. The torture, dehumanization, and mental anguish of Griffith is a wonderfully-written lead up to the birth of a unspeakable villain. And it's the subtleties of who he was and his experiences that make it an interesting development. The decision to sacrifice everyone was Griffith's own and it isn't justifiable at all, but the story gives us the complex causes on how someone can mentally fall to that decision. And it's fascinating. What Femto does is definitely not justifiable - but I figured it was clear that Femto is an unholy incarnate of Griffith, and not the human he once was. The twisted result of becoming one of the God Hand. But we're not talking about Femto here.
I feel like Griffith is mischaracterized. And no, I don't mean "uwu poor baby is misunderstood". He does really messed up shit and ultimately takes the path of pure evil. I just mean that I don't think a lot of people allow themselves to realize the complexities of his character, his choices, and what lead him there. This includes not just the torture, but what came before it, and how the choice is presented to him during the eclipse. That doesn't mean you have to justify or like his actions. Again, that's not the point here. But dumbing down his character to only the worst qualities and summing him up as _that_ simple is ignoring the author's work.

While I never condone Griffith's actions. I understand why he acted the way he does. I see the eclipse more as an act of desperation than revenge. He didn't even intend to start the eclipse in the first place, he tried to kill himself because, frankly there's nothing left to live for.
Him having a breakdown over Guts' departure isn't totally out of possessiveness or ego, Guts at some point became his emotional anchor. He was the only one that made him 'forget his dream' amidst the suffocating politics, wars and mostly the ever change grey lines he has to tread. He reminded him of the 'freedom' of not having a dream and living on one's own terms unlike others that live in mediocrity by giving up on their dreams, that's why he considers him his equal. He was his only reminder of his humanity, until then he viewed everyone as stepping stones, he was good in the sense he didn't do anything bad, every praiseworthy act he did that won everyone's devotion was a carefully planned transaction. The total opposite to Guts, who acted of his morals, his humanity
When Guts left, he commits his first and final human mistake and sleeps with Charlotte which had grave consequences.
People severely downplay Griffith's torture as if it's a slap on the wrist. I won't go into the nasty details but my best way to summarise it is, it made even someone as tough as Guts horrified.
He was no longer the Griffith everyone loved and admired. He was a husk of his former self. His own band that looked upto him with admiration and trust now look down on him with pity and doubt. He tried to force himself on Casca, who once loved him in a desperate attempt for validation only to get rejected by her further cementing the fact to how far he has fallen.
Finally he decides to kill himself when he suddenly gets a UNO reverse card at the cost of his friends. He chose his dream.
Then he sees Guts, who, in his eyes started it all and seeing Casca with him further cemented the thought that he took everything from him. He then forces himself on Casca in an act of 'revenge' on Guts as she symbolized, in Griffith's eyes 'everything that Guts took from him'.
I won't say Griffith did nothing wrong but I won't act as if every guy that gets tortured and broken would make the sanest decisions afterwards.

"Him having a breakdown over Guts' departure isn't totally out of possessiveness or ego [...]"
I disagree. Guts was never an equal in the eyes of Griffith. The reason why Guts, or infact, anyone of the band stayed with Griffith, is because Griffith had what everyone of them was seeking. Purpose. And Griffith looks down on others who do not have a purpose. Ironically, this seems what is the grand paradox in his character. He only respects others who have a dream, but rather than encouraging others to grow their own light, he capitalizes on its absence and keeps them at bay, dying for his.
When Guts decided to leave, by Griffiths values, he should have been qualifying himself closely to somewhat of a friend, because he decided to search for purpose. But Griffith did not respect that since he wanted Guts to be his tool and not his equal friend. Think about it this way. What would have been the outcome if Griffith would have won the duel? "You are too weak to escape my grip, therefore get back in line and swallow your hopes."?
Throughout the whole series, it was only shown once, that behind this charming mask and the "do what you want"-mentality, lies a predator, who actively wants you aimless.

It was a power move. Griffith was probably angry at Guts for rescuing him. For seeing him in that pitiful state. For seeing his mutilated face and body. I truly believe he felt humiliated that Guts out of all people was the one who saved him. I think that Griffith would have preferred to have been executed by his torturer, or at least a mercy killing from Guts. He probably really began to hate him after that because truly at a certain point respect and reverance was lost. Doing what he did to Casca was his way of saying, "you will never have the upper hand ever again". He felt that Guts had humiliated him, and he was retaliating by humiliating Guts in return. People who say "Griffith did nothing wrong/Griffith is not Femto"(just like bunch of comments in here) I believe is seriously lacking in reading comprehension. Griffith's core personality and goals were clear right from the beginning, his sheer relentlessness for his goals has always been shown to us during the golden age. If you switch perspective and look things from the Queen(Midland) and the small bald guy's perspective, you can see how shrewd Griffith is with his tactics. Some of the things he did are unnecessary, he just did some of them to humiliate the enemy. He always had his sadistic side we saw from him as Femto, it simply hasn't been fully realized before since he still has a role to fulfill and was made hesitant by Guts. Griffith and Femto has always been one, the only thing that separates them is their priorities, determination and the spiky massive schlong he probably got during eclipse.
If you think Griffith is not Femto then I'd like to know when specifically he became Femto that you say is a different entity. The general consensus is that he became Femto the moment he hatched from the egg, but before that he already tried to rape Casca and also tried to strangle Guts, he just couldn't complete the task due to his body. If you say during the long torture, well he did save Guts when he fell during Eclipse, I don't think the bad Femto would save Guts in that situation chief.

But I agree.. it was very risky, maby other Kings would have said nothing... because Griffith was a very noble Man also Knight, the Hero of the Kingdom, that ended the 100 Year War. + All of the possible Mates for the princess were dead.
And even then.. her Father, the King was a crazy person... that laid hand on his own daughter, he never wanted her to get married anyways.

After reading through that page where griffith is mentioning Guts is the only thing that flickers in Griffiths mind, it made me think the the author is trying to show Griffiths resentment towards Guts in a more embodied way, as oppose to just explaining it. He was showcasing it.
As far as i understand, people at times blame others for things that go wrong in their lives. Even when things are the result of actions they took, which perhaps were suboptimal, people who struggle with accountability will put the blame on another. Ive certainly be touched by this resentment/victim mentality.
So i just imagine, how Griffith is feeling, when all of this, according to his personal/subjective narrative, unfolded because 'Guts decided to leave him'- and as a result, he went to sleep with a princess, and did a poor job of self soothing, and spoke out of place and lashed out on a pedophile king, etc ->ALL because Guts left him

Obviously he was going to be in big trouble no matter what, but if he hadn't taunted and disrespected the king afterwards, do you still think he would have been imprisoned and tortured to such an extent?
I'd like to hear what other fans think: do you think Griffith could have potentially maneuvered his way out of this situation? People probably forget that Griffith after transformation wasn’t really himself. When people transform into apostles all of their negative traits get amplified very significantly. In Griffith’s case there has always been this dualism: silly child and loyal friend on one hand (he risked his life for Guts at least twice), and ruthless manipulator obsessed with control on the other. Femto embodies second group of traits, even though there’s still some good left in him since he clearly lets Guts to escape (manga shows it very well).

The reason why his torture doesn’t excuse what he did in the eclipse is because he brought that torture upon himself. It wasn’t a ploy, or conspiracy against him; it was him, and him alone. By that point, Griffith had pretty much won everything. He won the game. He had elevated the hawks from a band of mercenaries to a royal army. He was given the title of lord and was no longer a commoner. He captured Dolrey and became the hero of midland. He got rid of all of his conspirators and enemies. The king actually held him in high regard, and the princess was in love with him. And despite the king’s “feelings” for his daughter, he wasn’t dumb and surely he knew that she had to marry to someone eventually. Griffith, now being a lord, and also a hero who commanded the most prestigious army, was the perfect candidate. All Griffith had to do was formerly ask for the princess’ hand and his dream would of been complete. By marrying the princess he would have become the new king of midland and not only have the kingdom he always wanted, but the kingdom he actually fought for. But he threw it all away on a single night simply because he couldn’t control his emotions. Sure, Gut’s departure may have affected him sure, but you cannot hold Guts responsible for Griffith actions afterwards. Guts did everything for him, and only left after the war was won. He felt he was no longer needed, and that Griffith had accomplished his dream, and so it was time for him to move on. But Griffith, being the control freak that he is, couldn’t accept that, and so challenged Guts to a duel which Guts easily won. At that point, is all on Griffith. Sure I get he was distraught, but he’s a grown man and the commander of an army, and in that instance, he acted like a child. A child who was mad because he lost his favorite toy. Nobody forced him to go to the princess’ chambers that night. He could’ve gone to Casca or literally any woman in the kingdom and he would’ve been fine. But no, that wasn’t enough for him, he had to go for the damn princess. And that’s why he ended up that way. So yes, I feel bad that he ended up in such a terrible situation, but to say that that somehow excuses the eclipse is nothing more than selfish thinking, because once again, he brought that situation upon himself.

I feel like people miss the point of Griffith a lot when they dismiss “Griffith did nothing wrong” arguments. He commits objectively terrible acts, but he is not wrong as a person. The point is that no human on the planet, no matter how good of a person they think they might be, could withstand what Griffith endured and not accept the God Hand’s offer. Two years of torture that would make even the toughest man beg for death after an hour, and your so-called friends don’t show up to save you until you’re already a broken husk of a man. The experience no doubt gave him a profound hatred for humanity. All of us would do the same as Griffith in his position.

Griffith had 2 options: accepting the deal, or refuse it. The first one means for him another chance to fulfill his dream, it's both a reset and a power-up button. And there's the latter option: accept mistakes he made, accept he's not all so perfect as he(everyone) would image. Griffith could embrace the fact that he's just human and peace with it. Knowing his state of body and mind at that point it would require superhuman inner strenght and will (not that me myself would be able to resist it). Basicaly at that moment Griffith lost.

@@onkelreyleigh6353 well said. It gives the character depth making him more interesting. It does nothing to justify the crime.

Whatever sympathy I had for Griffith is destroyed after the eclipse.
    He is thinking
"these people said they'd die in my honor, but they left *Me* to die. So they can serve as the sacrifice for *My* reincarnation. I can get revenge for their abandonment of me"
Even though everything that had happened to him wasn't anyones fault but his own. Griffith thinks himself as a Holy God but in reality he is a Sadistic Devil

Even knowing somewhat that he was gonna be the big bad and that this was done because of his own hubris when first reading this arc on a basic human level you sympathize anyone going through what they implied and directly showed he did.

Bravo! Great video and it actually made me realize that most people would have done what Griffith did especially after that torture.

Griffith did nothing wrong, you will also sacrifice.
the most dear guy to you who betrayed you, then cause of betrayal you go to prison, get tortured brutally in dark cause of him leaving you for no reason,
Then when he finnaly saves you from the 1 year torture, he again wants to leave you,
Then you find the behelit, ready to sacrifice your flesh and blood for power but he interprets and ruins everything, then you are left with two choices :
    1. Die and go to hell.
    2. Sacrifice for power

i still remember the young naive me when he first reached the chapter that Griffith was rescued from his torture shell and i felt so sad and angry for what they did to him.....now after 20 years i would gladly throw him back there to rot.

I always felt like he was a massive scumbag he tell guts to his face that he belongs to him his options were to die for him or to die and that was the only person Griffith considered close to a friend
