1:18 Perfectly describes Zildjian and Sabian fanboys, most of whom have never played a Paiste.
correction : hod is a community of drummers where the subject is drums drummers and music, not only vinnie there is like 50 pages of 30 topics .don't worry , mike is pure drummer and his playing talk for himself , but still ,in terms of career, vinnie is on the top as a player , artist , technician.in all genres .this is the real difference betwen him and all drummers .now ,no need to compare the skills .about the switch ,we don't know why he change and we never will.no need to know either
I think Vinnie is a little drunk....
Have been playing Paiste cymbals for 25 years, and yes they are very consistent. Right now a mix of Signatures, 602, 802, 2002, and Rude. All mix and match well together. Welcome aboard Vinnie....
I've been using Zildjian for many years, but if I could afford it, I'd switch to Paiste in a heart beat! I can see why Vinnie switched.
I'm reading some of these comments about some guy named Mike Johnston and didn't know who he was until i youtubed him, and realized he's the guy that did the 1st cymbal comparison demo videos for Paiste...I just have to say that he's an excellent drummer , but have to agree with those who think that Vinnie is vastly more superior..
Is that because of Murat Diril? I've heard he was making cymbals both for Meinl and for Paiste (as Byzance and Twenty series respectively)
Wow, seriously people are comparing Mike Johnston to the king, Vinnie? I didnt even know who Mike was until i saw him on the cover of Modern Drummer. Then i youtubed him and he is ok. Sure hes better than most "internet teachers" like Jared Falk and Cobus or whatever, but that's not really saying anything given the aforementioned are a complete joke. Please don't say Mike's name in the presence of Vinnie, the greatest drummer of all time. Mike, the best drum internet marketer of the last few years, nothing more.
as much as i hate this interview, who the fuck is mike johnston? really? no wait a min BRUNO MARS IS KILLER ON DRUMS. and everyone else. wtf
I have always had people that love the way my stuff sounds, but once they found out it was Paiste, they would withdraw. Sad fools. I have such a wide variety of Paiste on my kit, from years, I have 3 pcs of 2000 sound relections, 3 pcs of signature, 3 pcs of 2002, and a PST5. 15" 2002 sound edge hats- my one true love!!
As much as I've got the utmost respect for Vinnie as a living legend of drumming, a major influence (direct or not) on most XXIst century drummers and being (as far as I know) a truly nice and intelligent person, I find it very sad that today, brands make it part of their deal to force artists of his level to behave like salesmen.
Wether what he says here is true or not, he just *shouldn't have* to go through this whole acting thing that no-one really cares about apart from Paiste execs. Sad.
come on guys, you've got three amazing things to talk about: vinnie, paiste, and the combination of the two. isnt that enough?!?!
Mike Johnston and Vinnie Calaiuta SHOULD NEVER BE PUT IN THE SAME Sentence ....... EVER... These kids are being fooled. Because mike johnston breaks down MY licks and every one else Licks and makes a living off of it.
Wow, Vinnie is actually talking to us! Cherish this because this is the closest thing to a instructional video or Clinic we're ever gunna get!
ITS FUNNY I HAD BOUGHT SOME ZIILDJIAN A CUSTOM CYMBALS THAT WERE OBVIOUSLY FORMULATED IN CONJUNCTION WITH VINNIE A FEW YEARS AGO. SO THEN WHEN HE SWITCHED TO pAISTE I COULDNT BELIEVE IT . I HAD SOLD THEM A WHILE AGO . sO NOW I GOTTA GO BACK TO PAISTE. BECAUSE Vinnie IS my favorite drummer
How a cymbal sounds and what your preferences are, is strictly up to the individual. Seriously, have you ever thought a drummer was great, good, or bad because of what brand of cymbals he used? As long as they are in the upper tier they will sound fine! Wether they are Zildjian, Paiste, Sabian, Stagg, or any other top brand. I'm sure Vinnie also loves Paiste cash.
Not that anyone asked but, I've always felt that, along with every other aspect of their cymbals, Paiste has made the best sounding bells ever.
i have a paiste 602 flat 22" ride.
the stick definition is UNBELIEVABLE.
Mike Johnston is a drummer anyway, just show your respect. But comparing Mike Johnston and Vinnie?? OMG are you kidding? A good drummer knows that "you can't compare any drummer with Vinnie
Hell, Porcaro played them.
And I have swithced to Zildjian/Istanbul recently...
Anyway I love Paiste and I feel really glad for them. This switch will probably draw attention of several other world class drummers to Paiste cymbals, which have always been fantastic.
I suspect that the 2 Johnston fanboys are actually Mike Johnston posting in disguise.. Or paid by him.. It's always the same 2 guys everywhere bashing others.. Promoting Johnston ect.. Johnston is a fine drummer an educator... But there is no reason whatsoever for someone to mention his name with the likes of Colaiuta, Weckl, Mayer ect.. Unless someone was deliberately trying to promote him..... Vinnie is the man... Johnston is not... that is all..
Why do you think Jeff Porcaro used Paiste? Because he knew!
I think the main difference is consistency, I use a mix of allot of cymbal brands....as long as it sounds like what I hear in my head, I'll buy it...but I do think it is much harder to find a great Zildjian....don't get me wrong, they're out there....but you gotta really search hard to find the good ones, but Paiste is much more consistent, you wont find a bad one in the bunch.
I agree here. It applies to drums as well. Like Keith Carlock and Gretsch drums. Talking about the vibe of an instrument. I suppose at their level it is about support and companies supplying them kits. I heard Vinnie is playing Ludwig, is that correct?
thats what i said man..........i mean paiste cyms over Zildjian? O.o come on Vinnie..........paiste cymbals are decent in my opinion but Zildjian is the right way to go!!!
Wait, did he say he didn't know about Paiste 602, then he says he was excited when they were being relaunched? Did I miss something?
That's strange, cause I went to a clinic of Mike's..and All Mike seemed to do was praise Vinnie, he literally called Vin the Jesus of drumming.
simply dont get it. he has his own line on zildjian who he was part of the designing process. I mean is the super vinnie. this sound little forced for me, cause of the sound of his voice, the gestures of his body and face, personally i think he sounds not that convinced maybe the cash were good, but he works with everyone, and that it isnt supposed to be the case, dont really understand this decision. mention by the way that i like paiste sound but prefer zildjian and even better sabian
I don't get the move from Gretsch to Ludwig.. don't think there's anything special about the Ludwig sound. Sure, they might be well made drums with a name, but beyond that, I'm not sure. Paiste to Zildjian, I can understand. But for me, Zilds just have a much more interesting/broad colour palette, whereas Paiste seem to be pretty consistent. Not that it's a bad thing necessarily, I just prefer the character of Zildjians.
As a beginner, anyone at your local music shop can recommend the proper cymbals best suited for your taste..All cymbal manufacturers make a low budget or beginner variant of their cymbal lines..As a professional studio and performing drummer for the last 27 yrs, and if you prefer Paiste, i would recommend their PST line # 5 .They're great quality for their price range and sound great..Just check out the cymbal comparison video on Paiste's website..Hope this helps and good luck with your findings
I have absolutely no idea what cymbals to buy as a beginning drummer. I actually considered buying Paiste cymbals, because Vinnie Colaiuta endorses them. Can anyone tell me what I need to be looking at when buying cymbals? Is it the way they sound? Their durability? There's just too much and you can't just walk in a music store and try every cymbal. What distinguishes a good from a better cymbal? I have no clue.
Hey!
What's up guys..?
How can anyone be disturbed of the fact that Mr Colaiuta is changing brand? Be reasonable, and think: I'm changing car from Merchedes to Audi. Both are topcars in their own characteristic way! Yet, how many out there have tasted several Singelmalt Whiskeys that all tasted great! He has a freewill.. ok! I do!
Mr Colaiuta has a point; //..they appealed to me..// That's what it's all about, taste and what's appeal to everyone!
Come on now, He's got money enough not to be
true, this guy hasn't made a contribution to music like vinnie colaiuta, or dave weckl, or jojo mayer (name you're favorite), but that doesn't mean he can't play. he can obviously make the drums talk. And by the way...thats exactly what a drum teacher does, breaks down the works of the masters and shares it with others, for money. As long as you're giving credit where its due, there's nothing wrong with it at all.
So go out and buy some 602's people.
Wonder if Vinnie will regret this interview someday?
Will he go through what a lot of drummers have gone through- playing Paiste for awhile, then actually one day it sinks in that Paiste's do all sound the same, the consistency is too good and thus uninspiring once the ear has become 'accustomed' to it.
The fact is the 602 line was created to sound like Zildjian's because the signature Paiste sound was not selling at the time.
How are people even BEGINNING to compare weckl, Mayer or colauita to mike Johnston? Mike Johnston is a good drummer, fair enough, and easily better than me! But he is NO WHERE NEAR TO THESE GUYS YOU ABSOLUTE NUMSKULLS!!! Weckl, Mayer and Colauita are technically better, musically better, they have also sold loads of vids and books, but last but not least... THAY HAVE ALL PLAYED ON MAJOR RECORDS THAT HAVE BEEN HUGE HITS! Thanks for the funny read though
As we have learn from RUclips popularity and lots of money doesn't equal quality. Now I am not saying that Mike is not an excellent drummer, because he is, but I think you are mistaking his popularity through RUclips and his website, which leads him to sell well, with him being in the same level as Vinnie, Jojo or Weckl. Just go ask him to play something very difficult that these drummers that I mention do and he won't be able to do it.
Don't get me wrong, Mike is a good drummer, but his resume will never look like Vinnie's. Vinnie is a legend that is always emulated and studied just because he is a monster drummer who has played with everyone. We discovered his playing through records and artists, his playing speaks for itself, he is musical and a genius in his instrument. Mike's drumming and influence just came from youtube and his website. He is a very good teacher though.
I'm not going to engage in a pointless argument. I'll simply reply here to say that I'm well aware of Mike's skills. I was a fan of his RUclips videos before he even had live lessons. I was there from day 1 of his live lessons and took them for a year. I even met him in person at his studio in CA. I always knew that he would someday become a big name in the drumming community, and I'm glad that he's now getting the widespread recognition he deserves. But it's pointless to play comparison games.
Nope and I don't worship Vinnie at all. I'm just a realist and if you watch the man play, look at his discography and who he gigs with it speaks for itself. What recordings have Mike done that's influenced drummers? Who has Mike played with? Is Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Sting, Chaka Khan, John McLaughlin and numerous jazz/fusion artist looking for Mike? You might have a valid point if you were comparing Vinnie to Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, Steve Smith.
This is big for Paiste. Let's see how long he sticks around. Mike Clark was with Zildjian for a long time, switched to Paiste, stayed for maybe 2 years and is now with Istanbul. IMO I still think it is a mistake on Paiste's part to discontinue so many of the great Traditionals cymbals. The Medium Ride and Flat Ride were killing pies. And I have yet to see all of the Twenty Masters Collections Rides in stores. I heard they were having trouble keeping up with demands.
Vinnie's an awesome player, but like all these musicians hawking their endorsements, you can tell that hes full of shit. I mean think about it. What world class drummer wouldn't have heard and played Paiste. At the end, its all about who pays who, and Paiste and Ludwig gave him a better deal. That's brand loyalty at the most professional level these days.
I'm not questioning him moving its all about sound, as you say its his choice, but what it is i find a bit weird is the way he describes how he stumbled upon Paiste, its like when recalling his moment of coming across them as "a what" & "a who", its like he never even heard of Paiste before never mind the Traditional line they do.
I find it interesting how Vinnie was the one who helped design the Zildjian A Custom range of cymbals roughly 20 years ago, and now he's playing Paiste models. I know it's all a matter of taste, and I've played some Paiste's in the past, but they just don't do it for me. Paiste's may be more consistent, but Zildjians have more character in my opinion.
Vinnie ur and will always be Vinnie no matter what u play or endorse even a Toys R Us drum kit!!! So because ur a freelance artist with lots of fans....why you do not in respect of them maked a public statement saying that relations with Gretsch and Zildjian were affected due to differences and because of that ur gonna look into a new line to support ur artistic needs.
why a discusion about one off the best on earth??? in my world mike is great and good drummer ,he can play me out with one hand ,butt compare with vinnie and weckl????????? pfffff no way brothers vinnie and weckl look at there history ,they are much much much greater than mike....every good musician can hear that....
Lol......are you kidding me? Vinnie doesn't have to worry about Mike Johnston. Please...Vinnie was well established when Mike was still in middle school and his resume and the gigs he continues to get speaks for itself. You must be a youngster. Go do your homework on VC before you post another bonehead response.
John Bonham is now happy...why coz he uses paiste as well. No more zildjian day for vinnie now LoL!
Now listen, I don't care about that stuff, if anything I feel sorry for mike because he seems like a great guy, but it doesn't need to be any trolling on this colauita vid :) I just prefer colauita to mike because he is a long time legend whereas mike is just starting up :D
Ha, ha, ha!!!, I mean if was a problem between Mr Colaiuta end Zildjian co.???. And I can´t to say Paiste cymbals are better than Zildjian, because each drummer thihk his cymbals are the best in the world!, Sabian, Zildjian, Paiste, Meinl, Istambul, Bosphorus, etc, etc, etc!.
well....Paiste didnt pull anything....Vinnie did this himself....no BS here......
...why are people comparing Mike Johnston and Vinnie Colaiuta? Like seriously? Vinnie focus's on session drumming and touring, and Mikes focus is on education and clinics. There's is no such thing as 'better', take a note from Vinnie, and stop thinking in black and white.
ok i agree with that .but i talk about drumming , not the drummer himself .ok mike might be approachable .it would be cool to chat with him and have lessons .as far as i know vinnie is approchoable but he s kind of lunatic .no need to build a big story on that
Vinnie is great, yes... but did you just refer to Mike Johnston as the next Cobus? Seriously, dude, your opinion just became invalid. Mike's a terrific drummer/clinician, and an all around great dude. Check him out.
Obviously he's full of shit, the best selling drum book is stick control and the best selling drum stick is the Vic Firth 5A. Actually it might not be Vic Firth, I just know that 5A's are the most popular of any company.
Jealousy of what? I am not jealous of Mike, he is an amazing drummer, no questions asked, but he is not at the same level of Vinnie. It sounds more like you are jealous that people don't worship Mike blindly.
wtf ?hey mate ,compagnies run after vinnie , not the other way around !
do you really think that vinnie moves to another mark just because of another drummer ? vinnie ?maybe its just about the sound it self first ...maybe
Besides what brand of cymbals you prefer, you may know that people changes, or evolve, as you may like, that's it. Why it's all about the money? Vinnie seems the guy who already got lots of money. He's no the only who left zildjian: Neil Peart (sabian).
Vinnie, you're a great drummer, but you couldn't BS your way out of a cardboard box. Good job Paiste, you pulled a top 10 drummer from Zildjian. Next time, try writing a script....this was painful.
Why are people talking about this Mike Johnston? Is he the new Cobus or something? Please dont waste your time mentioning other drummers when the subject here is the greatest drummer ever: Mr Colaiuta.
so true!!!!! people say that most of all young guys beceause they dont understand music/drumming....not yet!!! maybe practice en listen ,en do some research more...about the great weckl en vinnie
Vinnie would sound good if he was playing on garbage cans. He's probably the greatest drummer in the world. I don't care if he believes in little green men.
I see what is going on thelinedrummer and NGvilava show no activity in their channels at all and it shows they just joined RUclips. Hmm, trolls will be trolls.
good ! what your point ?mike is a victim ?vinnie is overwatched/talked ?
mike makes vinnie scare ?hod people are nuts ?grestch fired vinnie ?give me mike number ?
All this comparison between Mike and Vinnie is just ridiculous. Mike is a great drummer, and Vinnie is a great drummer. Why not just leave it at that?
This is a robot, this is not Vinnie Colaiuta. Vinnie Colaiuta plays Zildjian.
How can you act like you're sure what you're saying is true? This is a ridiculous comment. You guys are just insulting both of these fine players.
How did Mike J get to be a topic regarding Vinnie and Paiste? It's not Mike J's fault that a couple of his fanboys haven't reached puberty yet.
Anybody know what is the real reason about this rupture between the best drummer on entire universe and Zildjian???!!!. Please!!!, tell us!!!.
What you say sounds like this:
Popularity and sales= Best drummer in the world
It is like saying:
Justin Bieber= Best singer in the world
He is a drummer, not your favourite tv show host, and I have a question: who are the other drummer you said paiste grab from zildjian?
Vinnie appears on a few tracks on the new Trevor Rabin instrumental album, 'Jacaranda'. His playing is awesome
Its a simple money game.... Paiste must be paying him better than zildjian..
hod is not a sect and and vinnie not our god , and mike not a messiah ?
and vare you mike agent ?no? ok so stop that little game
aaand something else..I don't buy one thing he says there...and looking thoroughly at his face, I think neither does he...
for 30 years he has been playing what was right...and now...Jesus Christ..I personally still can't believe he left Zildjian
Says who, how do you know he does? And if he does it, it would be very dumb. I think his focus is mostly on teaching.
What a joke. So when they pay so much attention to Justin Bieber is because he is such an amazing singer. Come on.
Paiste, why are you so lazy as to put out a debut interview with your most important endorsee signing in MONO ?!!
Paiste isn't even that bad.. Like im surprised he left Zildjian also but Paiste and Vinnie go well together..
There's too much to follow these days, especially when a vendor (in this case Paiste) isn't your 1st choice.
What a way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Zildjian´s A custom that you helped design Vinnie....
man i can feel that you real angry back there !go talking to your drums for a couple hours ...pleaseeee
@PaisteChannel Are we going to get to see/hear a demo of Vinnie playing his news Paistes? Thanks.
Wait wait wait wait...Vinnie is using Ludwig drums now?? The world is coming to an end...
OMG what's with the haters? There's some twisted folks out there, go get a life please!
Mike Jonston is a good teacher, but he can't hold a candle to Mr. Colaiuta's playing.
Whaaat?I'm confused... Can someone fucking clarify what kit vinnie uses nowadays?!
Plus, I don't understand why you would choose to troll on any drumming vid anyway? /
i have to agree. i h ave played sabian since 1987. but i love paistes as well. zildjians always sound to clangy and gongy to me. i us aax/hhx/ aa/ signatures/hh. .. sabian is to me the beauty of paiste signatures with durability :) ..
+b.j. Godfrey Sabian is just a worse version of Zildjian to me. I think I might switch over to Paiste because they sound different compared to turkish cymbals and Zildjian keeps discontinuing the cymbals I like so screw them!
Zildjians sound like trash can lids. Even the a customs and k. Too gongy
I was literally speechless when I first heard this but if Vinnie made this decision, I not only respect his decision but I'm sure I'll be adding some Paistes to my arsenal as well. =D
Yes, has nothing to do with Paiste sounding far better than most Zildjian cymbals.
hey i was there too! "Vinie Vinnie Vinnie" Chants... :) he was sick eh?
Well stated.
vinnis is losing it...first he becomes a christian, then moves to paiste
The kids at my school all love zildjian, it sad how blind they are haha.
If Mike is so good at any style, where are the artists lining up to play with him or use him in recordings? He is famous now, but now what. Where are the artists lining up to play with him? He has played with his band Simon Says and then who? Come on.
This is the strangest police interrogation video.
short story long...but god now plays Paiste
Poor Zildjian artist relations rep...Lost his biggest account. Oops!
That is why he switch to sell more cymbals.
