They wanted freedom from occupation (and Vietnam has been foreignly occupied by many countries even before France). My father was in Vietnam he passed away the day after Christmas of 2022. He told me about a lot of these traps. He specifically said that they would nail the snake to doorways so that the snake was injured and irritated. Therefore immediately striking any heat that came near it. Just tossing that out there.
That's good. Your father had no business in there. Good thing he came back to the family.

@@Chuked From what I learned, they weren't even planning to be full-blown Communist, they sought for a structure to make as their government once they thought they were free from French Colonial occupation.
Hard thing is, Ho Chi Minh was initially on very friendly terms with the USA, quoting even from some of their presidents. They wanted freedom from occupation (and Vietnam has been foreignly occupied by many countries even before France).
But when France "wanted so badly its colony back" after the Japanese defeat and after WWII, the US decided to side with them instead of the Vietnamese.
The rest is tragic history.

I'll never have any idea why anyone thought it was going to be a good idea to fight someone in a jungle when that jungle is their home terrain.
They didn't have many choices... and the best option they had back then was to search for Vietcong main bases in the jungle (storage, training camps) and destroy them, which might also delay (or stop) the transport of weapons and people from the North.

How does triggering a tiny bullet that's in the ground cause you to get shot from above?
