In military shooting circles, American Carlos Norman Hathcock the Second, is a true legend.

Not the only case though. Children were usually messengers and (given the situation) militia soldiers as well and that is why more were killed. Still massive balls of steel for fighting like that

The solo mission to take out a VC general is one of the most badass things anyone has ever done. I saw an interview of him describing VC soldiers patrolling so close he could have spit on them and never knew he was there. Legend.

You forget the real-life map got no limits and airstrikes are not wasted on a possible sniper on a hill. Before the airstrike is even in - your shot in the head calling the headquarter or hours has passed and he is likely gone. The airstrike is also not precise...they could miss easily him by 100's of meters lol. Imagen using the same airstrike on buildings/fortifications where you were 100% guaranteed to hit and kill something?

My Grandfather knew this man during Vietnam and recalled how he would "go hunting" for days at a time and them just re-appear out of the jungle.
Carlos Hathcock aka 'White Feather' would eventually be credited with an official confirmed total of 93 sniper kills.
But the true total was probably several hundreds more as the system for acknowledging confirmed kills was stringent in the extreme, as it required an officer and a spotter to be present when the kill was made.
Notable kills:
"Cobra" A sniper duel where Carlos shot through Cobra's scope and killed the sniper
"Apache" who had a reputation for torturing captive U.S. Marines
A NVA General at close range with out a spotter
Killing a Vietcong Guerilla with a M2 .50 Cal Browning at a range of 2,500 yd, setting the record for the longest sniper kill at the time

Difference is the White Death fought mainly within friendly line. The Soviet lacked winter cameo and advanced toward the Finnish.
Meanwhile, Feather operated behind enemy lines. He also had to hunt enemies within defense jungles.

at 7:40 where Hathcock was going to snipe the general he actually took a few days of slowly crawling through the area. He did an interview explaining this and said he was almost stepped on by patrols a couple of times. He definitely had the patience to crawl through the thick foliage for days to get the perfect shot off. He then had to crawl back out of the area without being seen which took just half as long, if I'm not mistaken. The efforts this man went through to do his job was badass.
He used two different rifles on two different tours. One was built on a Remington 700 and the other on a Winchester 70, if I remember what I read in his biography.

@@silverhawkscape2677No, 50 Cal's pen the roof of tanks, every American tank (I think) has a 50 cal for infantry and support, the 50 cal was used as cas for planes, and the Russians put 12.7 mm after ww2 I think, Germans didn't put 12.7s bc the mg 34 worked fine for them.

@@redfox669 Simo didn't use a scope, since it fogged with the snow and the sun would have reflected the magnifying glass on the scope, not to mention that he didn't need it anyway since he had around 500 kills confirmed, and the snowy lands of Finland helped him stay hidden

Fun fact, when going behind enemy lines to kill the General, not only was he never spotted, but he was also crawling for four days from what I can recall from his book. He talked about how as he was crawling the scariest part was him hearing the sound of a snake nearby him only to realize it was one of the most venomous snakes in the world (i’m not sure which type). It’s funny because he said if he was to go out by being bit by a snake, after everything he’s been through, it would of been incredibly embarrassing.

What I like about Carlos more than Simo is that Carlos didn't wait for the enemy to come to him. He also didn't kill young soldiers, only the high rank, worthy kills. He also respected his foes.
I had the honor of knowing Carlos in his later years, just a all around great guy and true Marine. He was born in the same town I was and always made you feel better when you left his presence.

Carlos was actually almost killed during the sniper dual. He stepped on a twig and it made a snapping noise and the sniper shot towards him and hit his canteen. Very close to killing

A note about the M2 machine gun kill at 2450 yards is that he actually didn't mean to hit the soldier. He was sighting in his M2 and the soldier he hit had simply stopped his bike on an unlucky spot. He didn't even know the soldier (or the trail he was on) was on the hill across the valley.

How tf did this man not get a Medal of Honor
I assume it’s because of how the Vietnam War was viewed back home. Unfortunately a lot of people at the time looked down on Vietnam veterans because they participated in a war that shouldn’t even happen at all.
Because he did not meet the criteria for it. Most of the time he was not in a position of being under fire, and when he rescued his fellow Marines out of the track, he was not under fire either. No disrespect to him, there's just very strict standards and conditions that have to be met to receive an MOH.
Among the other awards he received were the Navy Commendation Medal and the Gallantry Cross.

This video was put out two days after my grandfather's birthday, he died two days later... He fought in Vietnam, and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals, he was in H company of the 1st Cavalry Division, he was an elite soldier.

If you look up the world's longest recorded sniper kills, almost all of them were inflicted with the .50 BMG round, though ones using the .338 Lapua Magnum have also occurred. But can we take a moment to realize that Carlos uses a BROWNING for sniping purposes, a gun that weighs almost 90 pounds and that's without the accessories and ammo?

I can’t find the second episode where they follow up, just a short clip where they are still using a police rifle with weaker ammo for some reason and still claim it’s busted. I know they go on to use an older rifle with a larger caliber and they say they got it, although they never replicate the angle and range properly.
All the scopes they were using are modern with multiple lenses that’s why

In a sniper scene of Saving Private Ryan, they filmed the same shot when Private Jackson shot through the enemy’s sniper scope.
Yah but back then almost no one knew about Carlos's incredible shot, so the legend of it reaching Spielberg, and the only example was known through pop culture, that film Saving Pvt Ryan, and then before people came aware of that real shot, there was a brief period of debate, argument if this was even actually possible, including mythbusters, because the hearsay about the real incident was still spreading now that it was a hot topic

Having personally met Carlos Hathcock in the Late 1980s when he was a guest speaker at a convention I was at, and having read both of the books written about him, Can tell you that there is a glaring error in the 1st part of the video. He did not go through basic training at Camp Perry, Ohio. That is where the national rifle championship matches are held. He was a nationally-ranked rifle shooter and won the Wimbledon Cup in 1965. Likr everyMarine, he went to basic training at either Paris Island, South Carolina or Camp Pendleton, California.
When he spoke at the convention I attended, you could hear a pin drop in that auditorium. Especially when he told the story about killing the Apache Woman sniper. The man was definitely a legend we will probably not see his likes again any time soon. SEMPER FI, Carlos!

When I was in 8th grade I stumbled across a Military Book that included this legend, and from here now in my senior year of highschool I'm glad he was my inspiration to enlist in the Marine Corps
