  • Today we discuss HBO's recent Nickelodeon documentary "Quiet on Set" that details alleged and proven instances of child abuse in the child-acting industry and specifically at the kids' network Nickelodeon. The series highlights the careers of Amanda Bynes, who famously struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues after she stopped acting, and Drake Bell, who has now come out with his own shocking and tragic testimony of being abused by a Nickelodeon dialogue coach. What does this mean for the acting industry at large? What should parents do if their children want to get into entertainment, and do kids have a place at all as the household breadwinner?

You may recall from the film, ‘The Sound of Music’, featuring Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp, that Captain von Trapp was adamant that his talented children NOT sing in public, at least in Austria. Perhaps by today’s sensibilities, this may be considered very strict indeed, but it seems that they were more aware in former times of the dangers of exposing children to the influences of ‘the world’ and the sacredness of the family!

I pulled my 7 year old out of Gymnastics class. We are a homeschool family and the majority of girls in the class were older and attending the local public school. They started bringing in fake tails and lent one to my daughter and she told me they were talking about furries and even called her one. She also started asking me to leave the Gymnastics place and that's when I decided enough. I'm keeping her out of that public school nonsense for a reason.

Kids today probably have it way easier than most past generations had. Sexual assault in the 1940’s was basically considered, just something that happens & suck it up stay away from the person. The part that saddens me the most is that this has been going on since the beginning of the industry (and likely since the fall). Shirley Temple dealt with a lot of sexualization and we know bits and pieces of things that other child stars have endured over the years. It's heartbreaking for them and for all the other people who get into the industry and are manipulated, used and abused. I think it's hardest to see with the kids but sadly it goes all the way up. With the nepo babies being in charge the cycles are bound to repeat themselves. We only know a small amount of what goes on and we pay them to continue doing it. I am ashamed of our complicity and yet, I am just as guilty as anyone in watching movies and tv shows too.

Thank you Allie for addressing this very important subject. I believe, if we are honest with ourselves, we can see the product of child stars in Hollywood going all the way back to Judy Garland!
Remember the show different strokes, all three of the kids that played on the show had major issues in their lives, 2 died as adults, one went to prison. There has never been any accusations of what happened on that show, but I would bet that something happened on set, and those children are a product of it, and it doesn’t have to be anything more than severe neglect .. verbal abuse we don’t even have to go as far as what Drake went through to say that children are affected tremendously by being in shows in Hollywood.
Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus to name a few, nothing’s ever come out that they had that kind of serve abuse…but we see children’s lives destroyed by Hollywood, Disney and Nickelodeon. So let’s be honest, Brittany was fed to the public when she reached 18, she was an enormous success. And not long after that fell from grace, and then became the butt of everybody’s joke in America.
Her breakout commercial for Pepsi when she was 18, the Super Bowl commercial was one of the most inappropriate commercials… now that she was of age America didn’t have to hold back any longer. She was no longer off limits was the premise of the commercial, even to an old man, it’s actually quite disgusting.
Miley Cyrus when she was 15 years old was posed in pictures with her father in Vanity Fair that were so inappropriate that they looked like they were boyfriend and girlfriend also very disgusting and disturbing!
These kids are told to stay skinny, fed drugs to keep them skinny treated like adults at a tender young age.
Now we have influencer parents, where you can barely squirrel through Instagram, RUclips, TikTok without seeing three-year-olds looking like 25-year-olds in the way they’re dressed posing dancing, make up, etc…. We don’t want to believe that parents have anything but good intentions for their own kids and yet the RUclips mom Ruby Franke is a perfect example of what was going on behind the scenes with extreme abuse of her own children.
It’s an evil thing that is happening, wanting fame, fortune power being more important than children … again thanks so much, Allie

I grew up with a narcissistic, psychopathic father who isolated me and my family so that he could remain in control and go on abusing us in secret. Me, my mother, and all eight of my brothers and sisters agree that most of the things done we can't remember. Most of what i remember were things that happened in front of each other, and even these are blotchy. Once my four oldest sibs moved out, it got much worse. He would drug all of us each night to do whatever the heck he wanted. I asked my cousin recently if he ever did anything in front of her. She said she remembered him because overly friendly and helpful, making dinner and all that. I dont remember much, but i know he never did this when no one outside of the house was there to see it. He even hid everything from my grandfather who lived across the street and was the caretaker of my disabled mother.
When i was twelve, they divorced and my older sister went on the stand to tell all the times he had beaten her. She told me recently how when i was eight, i stopped her in the hall and told her not to leave me alone with him. I wish i knew why. I have speculations based on what was done to others, and also some unexplained behaviors i had. It's both a blessing and a curse.
Even back then, i had severe memory loss. It's such an insistent coping mechanism that i have problems remembering things i did this morning. I hope someday i find a way to change this, but oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This episode hits way too close to home. My sons were brutally abused by a ‘family friend’ for years. The guilt I carry for not seeing what was happening is pervasive. In hindsight I can see the signs. Unfortunately it was too late. Where my story differs is after my children were subjected to sharing the horrific details of their abuse to police, advocates, and prosecutors, we worked tirelessly for two years, through the court system and eventual trial (where we all had to testify) to stop this man from ever harming another child again. Because of Christ and our efforts this predator was sentenced to 30 years in prison with the cavitate that he cannot be released before going before a parole board after the 30 years have been served. I am not at all naive to the fact that this type of outcome is in the 1% of cases. I am incredibly grateful to Christ. He gave/us the strength and courage to see it through and has been a constant as we have gone through our healing journeys. My heart breaks for Drake. I pray he comes to know Christ through this revelation of abuse.

Shirley Temple was a child actress who was in movies back in the mid 1930’s. I just watched a RUclips video that spoke of the kind of sick people back then that used young children in these movies. Some of the content in real early shows was very disturbing. One of the movie’s title was called “Baby Burlesque”.!! The young children were scarcely dressed in under garments and they were basically acting out adult content. Very very disturbing. I can’t even begin to understand why any parent would allow this. These children it seems don’t have a voice or someone to speak out for them. Whether it was as far back as in the 30’s or more recent in the 90’s is so sad to see it’s still around. It’s very hard to watch & hear what they’ve all gone through. I truly pray for protection over any & all children that go into the entertainment business.

Media like this does a great job of calling out the men who are predators to children, but they never point out the teen girls and women who do the same to children. Out of all my sisters, cousins, and female friends, at least half of them were abused in similar ways like this by other women, who girls who were much older than them at the time. I find it interesting that in real life I hear about same sex abuse by women and older girls, but it almost never shows up in the media as news worthy.

When you talked about Drake speaking to his girlfriend’s mom and then not really able to tell everything with the therapist….I mean I get it. I don’t think it’s because he couldn’t articulate what happened into words. I believe because of how horrific it was going through all those times, to say it out loud is like having to relive it again. It’s so hard for victims to confess what the very act was by describing it that it’s like they’re going through the rape or trauma all over again. And until the individual is ready it’s truly up to them. God bless him!! I pray for his healing through Jesus!!

My parents weren't around much. Most of my friends' parents were not around a lot either. It was a busy and dangerous city I lived in on the border so there wasn't a lot of adult supervision when we watched these shows. However, one time my dad suffered a bad knee injury, he got time off for almost a month. It gave him a lot of insight. He did not like what he saw on Nickelodeon. Since I lived in Mexico, some of the show's episodes arrived a little later, even when we got cable, and some were dubbed in Spanish. But even so, my dad was taken back. As a kid, I didn't understand why my dad made a big deal of it. He didn't let me watch those shows while he there and when my grandparents were there, even less. Watching this documentary as an adult in my 30s it feels so surreal. Even more disturbing that these kid actors' parents were not that involved and those that were, were there for the money. I do not doubt some parents might have thought this was a great opportunity for their kids and thought they were doing the best for them but at the end of the day, it is a heartless industry that still has bigger expectations for kids than adults. Not to mention, it is a sinister environment for these kids to grow up in.

  • @pinkrubix
    @pinkrubix Месяц назад +4

It's kind of a harsh way to put it, but it's true. There are a surprising amount of parents who will vacate their role of protector to their children and instead actually, more or less, pimp them out if it means that they'll get a lot of money for it. In the case for a lot of these kids, I think their parents had to make a decision. Look the other way and allow their child to be preyed upon, or speak up and ruin their child's career and run the risk of getting them backlisted and not have that money coming in anymore and the adults having to get their OWN regular jobs and downgrade their lifestyle to something far more regular and normal instead of a bunch of fast expensive cars and huge homes. And that's been ever since kids have been in showbiz, it didn't start with Nickelodeon and it won't end with it. There have been kids who, once they're grown, have to not only deal with the repercussions of what happened to them in the course of their jobs as child stars, but also had to sue their parents because their parents stole all of their money. Parents should never put their children in the position of being the sole or the main breadwinner in this way nor should they be willing to compromise their children's wellbeing to make sure that it continues. That isn't a child's place and I'm far less sympathetic toward the parents than some people might be based on that deeply-held belief that I have. As a parent one of your absolute main priorities is and should always remain to keep your kids safe and if you see something weird you should never give in to temptation to just look the other way if the alternative could involve your child being molested or worse. Vacating that responsibility is always a choice and it's one that I absolutely judge these parents for. Even the ones, perhaps especially the ones, who saw something and lied to themselves to convince themselves nothing was happening so that they could continue raking in that dough and getting all the perks of having a rich and famous child.

Supposedly, her parents were in control of her social media after they obtained a conservatorship over her. She supposedly created a new account under a different name and made some serious allegations against Dan Schneider. The rumor is that she got pregnant by Dan at the age of 13 and was forced to have an abortion (she did have one), and was basically forced not to tell anyone of the incident. There are also rumors that Jamie Lynn Spears’ baby that she had at 16 (which ended her career) was also Dan’s biological child. However, Jamie vehemently denies this. I watch an episode of King of Queens, Cary was babysitting her bosses son and he kept grabbing her breasts, both hands... and in my mind I am thinking does the child really know they are acting is this appropriate? What if this child grows up learning that as long as I am acting then its okay? idk but it does not seem good for children

There is going to be plenty of times our children are going to be upset or even confused because they don’t understand why we do the things we do. So many of these kids who come out of these studio mills end up a total wreck. How much evidence is needed to tell a parent that their kid is better off acting in school plays and if they want to explore life as an actor let them do it after they have a had a chance to be a regular kid. I watched this documentary and was sickened by it, especially the same canned/boiler-plate disclaimer Nickelodeon put out to address every problem. The documentary never did delve into the real movers and shakers at the parent studios who drive all of this.
I think back now, how I let my kid watch Nickelodeon pretty much on her own in the early 90s and I get it, parents trusted that kid shows were kid shows, not much different from what we grew up with. Even by that time though I had heard disturbing reports about gay-days and such at Disney theme parks so my antennae was at least a bit sensitive to that bunch. Later, in the mid 2000s, I was visiting friends and their six-year old daughter was planted in front of the screen watching some Disney show. There was a scene where there was a young black boy, a young white boy, and a young white girl and the young black boy made a fairly overt reference to the difference in the size of his penis compared to the young white boy. I froze, did a bit of a double-take, not really believing what I had just heard. I told my friend who was busy chopping vegetables in the kitchen about it and said she needed to keep an eye on what her kid was watching. She kind of dismissed it but a few weeks later she told me she had started to pay attention and they cancelled their Disney subscription after she saw how graphic and inappropriate the content was.
These sets are like magnets to child predators. Most of them, if you look into their background, were molested at a young age by someone of the same sex and if you look at who offended them you see the pattern again and again. That's not being homophobic, that's just a fact. It's about stealing the innocence, almost like they are trying to get their own back by taking it from someone else. When the movie Sound of Freedom came out it came under withering attack from the media, writers calling it a Q-Anon dog whistle and right-wing conspiracy. But if you look into the background of the people writing those columns you will find a breadcrumb trail that leads to NAMBLA and the MAP movement, which they have been trying to tee up since transgenderism has reared its ugly demonic head. They are on the side of the predators as all those letters of support for the creep in this documentary illustrates. Maybe some of these celebrities simply signed a piece of paper because they were told it was a requirement. Maybe some actually bought that creeps story. I dunno. I do know this, there are parents out there who, even with all of this abuse coming to light, will still push their kids into this lifestyle, and into the open arms of the predators.
That kid who was taking dollar bills from grown men at a strip club at the age of 12 is a classic example. ABC had the temerity to put that child and his mother on their morning show and Michael Strahan, who has the IQ of a cumquat, went on and on about how brave he was for living the life he wanted and how brave the mother was for allowing it. An action that 10 years earlier would have resulted in at a minimum termination of parental rights was being celebrated on national TV. Later, the mother went on a rant about all the attention her son was getting from pedophiles, wanting pictures etc. And then, after a few meatball surgeries to change himself into a girl at the age of 17, the kid started to complain about how badly it was all going for him.
This is why I pray for the children of this generation every day and twice as hard on Sunday. Our children are under demonic attack and the response of the adults has been shameful. There will be a reckoning for those exploiting these kids, plenty of millstones to go around there. May God have mercy on all of this lost and wicked generation.

Thinking she was older because she had fake pictures of her smoking and drinking. He didn't realize they were fake. When he found her age he blocked her. Then when the girl found out he was married. She started making false allegations. Everyone on social media is guilty of what Drake Bell did. I can't count how many times I have seen inappropriate comments from adults on family bloggers, and teenagers on social media making comments on their looks, asking when they will be 18.

The gall of people like James Marsden and others showing up and writing letters in support of Brian a predator says alot about him as an individual (he too could be a predator that's why he can defend Brian) and how rotten the world has become that we can defend evil and its ugliest😢

I’m curious on why you didn’t touch on that Drake Bell is currently out of country due to being a child predator himself now…

These people are protected. thats how you become a predator and keep your predator job after you served less than 2 years.

That is where you are wrong. Unfortunately it is the job of the police. Nothing can be done until the victim does that. I know it's hard but that's the truth. A big company cannot protect you from the police

@@billmarshall268 He was on the sex registry and got another job working with children... I thought if your registered you dont get to be around children?... and what judge gave him two years of prison time after drakes testimony? iv heard of people going to jail much longer than 2 years for child rape or rape in general... thats what I mean when i say he is protected... by who, idk all I know is regular people usually serve real jail time while holloywood elites and their elk get off pretty easy for their crimes.
