She had the audience transfixed. Was one of the first times the audience didn't applaud throughout. Beautiful....would love an album full of timeless pieces like this! Perfect pitch! Best version of Smile I've ever heard.
I agree. Sara has that timeless quality to her voice that could do this classic justice (as she proved in this performance). I would love if she released this on a future album.
Hauntingly beautiful. Rest in Peace to all those who have passed this year and to the genius who was Robin Williams, the joy you brought to my family & I will always be carried in my heart!
Wow! Breathtakingly beautiful. I love that clean, classic singing style. Thank you for the upload. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. For me this was the highlight of the show. Don't forget the incredible genius of the orchestra behind her as well.
Mystic... thank you for that. It was brilliant. Where genius, talent and lots of hard work come together. I was so moved I have to hear it over and over and am still picking up nuances. THIS is art!
S. David Bays You're welcome. Have you listened to the official clip from the Television Academy? Because that one actually has the full instrumental introduction. The only problem is the audio isn't nearly loud enough, so you don't get the full impact of Sara's buttery voice. But it's worth a watch.
mysticsmb Yes. I've been watching and listening to it all day at work. It's great. "Buttery" is a good way to describe her voice here. I hear her doing completely different styles on some of her other stuff. Versatility is a mark of her singing depth. Different songs and song situations call for different tone. Doing a memoriam like this when many were saddened, grief stricken, some still in shock at the latest passing of Hollywood nobility she struck the right tone. Somber, hauntingly sad but incredibly beautiful as the lyrics are inspirational. "Smile, though your heart is aching. Smile, even though its breaking ... Light up your face with gladness ...Hide every trace of sadness, although a tear may be ever so near." Who writes lyrics like this now days? This was a live performance and there was only 1 take. She and her accompaniment did it flawlessly. You couldn't have improved on this in a studio production. Her stock has risen definitely and now more folks, like me, know of her and now the world will be watching.
S. David Bays Sara is known for being a phenomenal live singer--comes from years of gigging. Rarely does she do the same song the same way twice. And yes, she's extremely versatile, in part because her voice isn't super distinctive. What is distinctive is how she uses her voice, how thoughtful she is about every single song, every single performance--such intelligence underpinning the emotion. Btw, if you haven't yet listened to her cover of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road you simply must! And of her own material, Gravity has some of the most poignant lyrics ever written.
Miss Sara Bareilles that performance was absolute beautiful flawless at the 2014 Emmys it is a pleasure to listen to you sing, : ) :)

S. David Bays The 'orchestra' is actually only three (female) members of her band--on cello, violin and piano.
Mystic... thank you for that. It was brilliant. Where genius, talent and lots of hard work come together. I was so moved I have to hear it over and over and am still picking up nuances. THIS is art!

Thank you!
Too nice a tune to be so dumbed down.
Dumbed down high?
wmwilliam67 *how?
She sings flat.
Her pitch is so flawless, it's actually scary. Maybe you just can't understand the beauty of minor chords.
Mark Wilk You're on crack. Her pitch is legendary--she's a former acappella champ.
She is not flat.
Perhaps your ear is.
Go back under your bridge, troll.
