I like that they did something new and inventive with the island map. It reminds me of some of the super wonky maps with mass eggs and weird strats. That said I think we're going to find that the Island map's pacing is just slow and not do this again.
I hope someone can give Flash a run for his money this time, otherwise it's going to turn really dull really soon, everyone will basically be playing for the second place at best.

They're just so easy to get to and they demolish zerg air. At least terrans have valkyries and wraiths, but devourors are just really not as good. There's a good reason island maps got phased out of the top level tournaments in BW. EDIT: Well after a bit more discussion and realizing how much bleedin' gas is available and looking at how zergs have been wrecking face... I think my opinion has changed :D

If Effort's case in particular, the guy said on stream that he was going to halfass Sparkle and win the next two, and that's exactly what happened. Guy's been playing UMS more than melee, and it's thanks to the power of cheese he made it out.
IMO, Devourers are good only as supporting units. They do acidic spores, yes, but they are just too slow on their own. You need smart combination of every flying Zerg unit in this case, including ensnare spell. Otherwise scouts and corsair will simply destroy Zerg. Scouts can do more damage than Battle Cruisers in air to air fight.

First, thanks a lot for sponsoring these games. The pro game play in Brood War is definitely more fun to watch than SC2. Just one thing though. The commentators are REALLY BAD. They do not give background information about the players (past stats, percentage in each race matchup, etc.), and no stats about the maps either. In addition, they do not comment on the opening each player is going for (12 hatch, 14 CC, 9 pool, etc). The worst part is, they don't really commentate the game itself. They spend the entire time discussing non-sense strategies or novelty ideas that they invented during their amateur plays at home (e.g. "hey I think Stork should go for interceptors, what do you think?" Then they just spend the next 5 minutes discussing that). Even worse, the commentators often get too excited with their non-sense ideas, and they just kept laughing even though it is not funny at all. This is just awkward. Brood War pro games are very fast paced and high-stake, but the commentators are not concentrated on the games themselves, which kills the excitement. This is especially true during big engagements. Most commentators can speak really fast during major fights, following what each unit type is doing, which makes it sound very high-stake. However these two commentators simply skip most of the action, and are merely spectating instead of commentating on the detailed actions (e.g. "here comes the big engagement...I think XXX can take this...ok he wins"). Not to mention that Flash fanboyness. Anyways, the bottom line is, please find someone that actually focuses on the game itself.
That Crystal is there to make it a zerg only gas, as it blocks the other races from mining out of it (due to the fact that assimilators and Refineries are smaller than zerg extractors)
sparkle is cool but please rotate it out in favor of other interesting and unorthodox maps for next asl, and don't even try to "fix" it imo. it would really be a big let down to see sparkle 1.2 on asl 6 instead of it being replaced. throwbacks to old classics could be okay too how about modernized luna or nostalgia amirite. but sparkle is already getting stale tbh. if we have to go down the path of exploring more island maps how about sometimes island, sometimes land map like this? liquipedia.net/starcraft/Parallel_Lines

isn't this just factually wrong so far? we've had two zergs in the ro24 and they've both got out of their group alive.
