It's open to the public but still private property. As the building owner/occupier, they are perfectly entitled to refuse entry or eject anyone from that property at any time. So, in order to appear reasonable, they produce a policy or guide to expectation for anyone on their property. You then have a choice to either accept those conditions or leave. If you contravene their conditions, you may be asked to leave or the police may be asked to assist them to eject you. However, there is also a commercial consideration, if you start ejecting people for petty contravention, you'll very soon have an empty shopping centre! I wonder if she told the cops that spoke to her to turn off their BWCs. I hope the cops educated her and the mall staff on the right to peacefully film in public spaces and if there is something like a FOIA request process in Britain please request and post the footage of Karen's police interaction in hopes she can be shamed some more.
Sadly though, you are probably right, the mall will remove the piano because heaven forbid there will be a few people that complain rather than having it there for the enjoyment of the rest of us.

Brendan is going in circles when they've dealt with it the right way and he just thinks he knows better. Even pulled out the 'defaced union jack' nonsense when everyone and their dog uses some version of it with writing or emblems on it at football matches and protests.
The issue wasn't about basic law. It was about the policy of the shopping centre - which will vary from location to location. Not even a KC will know that without studying it for each mall.

Every part of Britain is owned by someone or some organisation, quite often by the Crown or local councils, even the pavement in a street is owned, so by your definition that places that are owned aren't public that would make it illegal to take any photos anywhere, and walking down the street would be trespass.

You have no rights to do as you please on private premises even if they are open to public. You are subject to their rules. Otherwise they can evict you as a trespasser. Not a police matter though.

It's open to the public but still private property. As the building owner/occupier, they are perfectly entitled to refuse entry or eject anyone from that property at any time. So, in order to appear reasonable, they produce a policy or guide to expectation for anyone on their property. You then have a choice to either accept those conditions or leave. If you contravene their conditions, you may be asked to leave or the police may be asked to assist them to eject you. However, there is also a commercial consideration, if you start ejecting people for petty contravention, you'll very soon have an empty shopping centre!
To my mind, what should have been said to that woman by both security and plod was STFU or please leave. Similar to Brendan, we'd like you to play on but don't film or please leave. Simple.
