Don't apologize for crying. It's such a beautiful story and animation. I've seen it literally dozens upon dozens of times and I *still* cry every single time I happen across it again.
There's a reference to this animation in Lullaby for a Princess. When Celestia goes into Luna's room, you can see Snowdrop's cutie mark by the door. Snowdrop was quite influential. It fits the show's continuity and themes so well and so thoughtfully that a lot of people just treat it as canon. It does a better job at that than anything from G5, and many G4 episodes as well.

What time
Well, l love this beautiful episode and Snowdrop might have been a very special friend for luna so dearly, l hope the memories of snowdrops will never ever leave in Luna's heart
Basically, the story of Snowdrop takes place after the first 100 years of the princesses reign.
At some point afterwards, Luna becomes nightmare moon, and is sealed away for 1000 years.
And the fact that she’s blind is the reason why none of the other students wanted her paired up with them, because the little brats didn’t think she’d be capable of helping them in anyway.
And the ending scene is celestial, and Luna releasing the last of the snowflakes that snowdrop herself made
(in a magic jar to keep it from melting)
and it just so happen to be the first snowflake she made.

The saddest thing about this special is that Luna got trapped in the moon and never got to see Snow Drop before she died. By the time she got out of moon jail snow drop had been dead for nearly 900+ years. And then Luna only had one snowflake to remember her by, the very first one she made.
Although Snow Drops cutie mark made it onto a magical castle window so she can still be remembered that way.

Snow Drop was the #1 MLP fan made video of the month it was released. It was also released in the same month as the most anticipated fan video: the officially licensed fan-made episode (well, by licensed, the creator had the permission of Hasbro specifically to make an episode of MLP). Both released in the same month, and Snow Drop won best video.
for you question, Snow Drop died of old age. Most of the happens more than a thousand years ago. She wouldn't live as long as the alicorn princesses.

"SnowDrop" is one of my all time favorite mlp fan animations! It's such an emotional rollercoaster especially at the end.

Yeah, this animation really hits you in the feels..... but it's so on point for a Christmas special to do that. Easily the best loved and most remembered of the animations of this period where many people were trying to make "fan episodes", full animations that could be held up as fan created episodes of the show. And yeah, Snowdrop died, though not of anything tragic, this was a story that took place over a thousand years ago, so be all implications, she had a full life. The real tragedy of their conversation was it seems Luna did the whole NMM thing during that time, and so wasn't there with Snowdrop at the end, only to return and find the one pony she seems to have treasured the most long gone.
Yeah, lots of feels in this one.... but it's just so good....

13:44 Well, sorry to break it for ya, but everyone does eventually :q But, you see, the thing is to live such a life that will bring joy to others, so that when your time comes to an end, everyone will remember you and what you did for them. Snowdrop was such a pony. She might have been blind, but she was nevertheless very "observant", and she noticed something that everypony couldn't see with their eyes. With all their eyes, they couldn't see any value in her, but she didn't need eyes to see the value in winter, and that way she changed winter for everypony forever, and everypony will always remember her for it.
