This is my first time seeing one of your videos but I liked and subscribed because I totally appreciate you keepin it real...plus you know more than I do about the container growing subjects. Love the honesty! It’s my first year trying to grow in 5 gallon buckets and so far I’ve yet to see any cantaloupe. I started from seed indoors and I’ve lost a few but I still have a few growing. My question is did you use any manure? Also have you tried fox farm?

    • @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead
      @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead  Год назад +2

      5 gallons can be tricky but they work. Once you see flowers, fertilize with morbloom 0-10-10. Once the fruit set only let 1 grow on the entire plant if not you will have to feed like crazy to get them to a decent size. At the time we weren’t t using manure but we do now. We get free composted manure and we love it. We have used fox farm and it works great. It’s our favorite bag mix. A little pricey tho. We usually mix it with our “super poop”.

    Thank you a lot, man, for such a clear "do's and don'ts" by growing Cantaloupe melons in a pot.
    As for me, I'm absolutely in love with any subspecies of Cantaloupe melons adoptable for growing in home pots or containers, especially "Minnesota midget Cantaloupe" and french heirloom Cantaloupe subspecies named "Charentais". number one Michellin orange melon in Paris' restaurants.
    Have a nice one, greatest harvests to your family in a new vegetable/fruiting season and like and subscribe, for sure...
    Keep up the good job, man.
    Cheers, Serge.

    • @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead
      @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead  Год назад +1

      I believe the 20 inch container is a little larger than the 20 gallon bag, but not by much. (I’ll let you know for sure tomorrow). Melons are heavy feeders so I would only put 1 per container. You can also have an “experimental” bag where u plant 2 in that bag to see what happens. That way if it doesn’t work you don’t lose all your melon plants.

    • @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead
      @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead  6 месяцев назад

      Yes sir! That worked for me. I wanted it to have as much room as needed and not compete for nutrients with another plant. I do 2 fruit per plant because it is in a pot. But may be able to get away with more because they don’t get huge like watermelons.

    I started by seed this year and I over did everything. But you start running into problems indoors with not enough grow light and space to cover them all. That ended up in crop rotations and taking them outdoors every chance I got when temperature were permitting. It was a lot of work doing that although it kinds of helped harden them off and were ready to go in the ground right after the last frost date. But I understand why you buy starts. It can be much easier for certain plants and I also question if I really saved much money after figuring out time and cost of the lights running? I also had serious failures with pepper plants because they really just don't want to start from seed unless you have a heat mat.

    • @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead
      @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead  2 года назад +1

      Last year we didn’t start enough of ANYTHING!! Which made us have to buy a lot of starts. This year we have a lot less starts but we will supplement with them so we can keep every bed and row full.

    Hi! This is my second time visiting ur channel, so I started cantaloupe from seed, I was only getting male flowers and the 4 vines weren’t producing the fruit (female flower) well I put a 2 system in with it, (meaning i put a lg cottage cheese container with large holes on the bottom filled that hallway with old leaves and kitchen scraps and on top of that a starter plant that was literally struggling) well I have tons now of females and the plants are taking off, even the starter plant has come back to life and in about a week and a half it has doubled in size! I got the idea for the 2 system from #RobbieandGarygardeningEasy here on RUclips. Anyway how many fruit should I let grow per vine? I wish I could send a pic! I used a decent sized container, can not remember what the gallon is, I have 4 vines and now sine the 2 system I put in there are multipack female plants on each vine. Should I let it go or should I cut some? This is my first summer ever growing anything other than a couple basic herbs.

    • @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead
      @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead  2 года назад

      Hey, thanks for coming back and great job experimenting and finding what works! I follow Robbie and Gary too and I’m about to do that system in a few of my beds and containers as well. I’m only allowing 2 fruit per vine. That way the plant can focus on those two fruit. I wait to see what gets pollinated and what is developing the best before I cut off the fruit.

    • @MNatale425
      @MNatale425 2 года назад +1

      @@hisandherbshighdeserthomestead ohhhhh good! Well I did a little experiment with the 2 system, I just wanted to see for myself…. I had 2 tomato plants same size same breed, kind….lol I don’t know what to say but they were the same in every way height and all, I put a small 2 system in one and the other just plant food. I water them every morning and every night…….the one with the 2 system doubled in size! It was amazing to see….. ok so I will wait to see whIch ones are pollinated and took and I will cut off any other. Do you cut the top of the vine also so that will stop growing? I am growing sugar baby melons and I have 3 one on each vine and I cut the top of one of the vines bc it was getting out of control, so I cut the top of the vine about a foot above the melon and it started getting bigger, I feel like it stopped growing for a minute, then after cutting the top that’s when it started filling out. I’m not sure if that is something I should have done or not. I just put a 2 system in this container. I’m hoping it helps with the other 2, they seem to be growing at a much.slower rate. What I didn’t do is jot down the date I planted and all that.

    • @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead
      @hisandherbshighdeserthomestead  2 года назад

      @@MNatale425 you should be good with cutting the vine after the melon. I’ve seen it done but I haven’t done it myself. My plants always seem to stop growing once they get nice sized melons on them. But from what I hear it works! I did an update video to this one so you can see our production this year. Since shooting that video my melons have put out a ton more flowers! You have me excited about using the 2 system!
