Guys.Tool has been one of my all time favorite bands since their inception in the early 90s, so understand where I'm coming from when I tell you that Maynard might be just worthy of setting up Rush's instruments. If there is any doubt about my sincerity, I would simply refer you to side one of the album 2112. Neil Peart passed in January of this year and anybody who ever considered themselves a musical connoisseur is still in a state of mourning over the loss. By the way. Neil Peart (pronounced with a long "E") was the lyricist. Yes, the drummer wrote the fucking lyrics. Alex Lifeson is arguably the most underrated prog. lead guitarist in the genre and Geddy Lee is the vocalist, bass guitarist and plays keyboard with whatever appendage he has left. Please remember, when heading down the Rush rabbit hole, keep your hands inside the vehicle and keep your seat belt fastened at all times.

My,my gentlemen. What a journey you have started. Neal pEARt is undoubtedly the finest percussionist that has ever graced this 🌎. The man is renowned by some of the finest drummers ever. You have old timers like Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington that said Neal is a prodigy that will never be matched. The skill of not only Neal, but Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are a thing of the past. There isn't one band out there that can match the level of musicianship that these three posses.
About Alex Lifeson. Eddie Van Halen was asked "How it felt to be considered the best rock guitarist in the world" His answer was "You'll have too ask Alex Lifeson what it like"
Now Geddy Lee. Holy shit Batman! Did you hear that bass? This guy is infuckingcredable (spelling) The way he and Neal play to each other and in return play right in to Alex's hands. These three are on a whole different level. Listen to the early stuff that brought them to pinnacle for where they sit. 1974-1981 is what did it for them. Just pick one. Keep on rocking fellas.

@@patrickaalfs9584 It depends on preference. My opinion is that Rush has never even stood next to the early Genesis and Yes, neither musically nor lyrically. And they played the instruments no as good if you go there. Neil Peart was almost a Phil Collins fan, describing his playing as "This is how a drummer should play." Seriously, I have always liked Phil's drumming more than Neil, but whatever. The problem with the great popularity of Rush instead of dozens of other prog rock bands is that the rest of the prog rock bands were English, and we know the opposite side of the American character, they don't like anything that doesn't sound American. English notes in the early Genesis prevented them from becoming so popular in America. Rush had poorer music, but this was the kind of rock that Americans were waiting for and I admit that Rush influenced many American rock and metal bands. So yes. If you think Rush is the best prog rock band listen again to Firth Of Fifth, Supper's Ready or The Cinema Show by Genesis and Close To The Edge, The gates of delirium by Yes

Neil Peart is considered to be one of the three best drummers in the rock world along with John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Keith Moon from the Who. He also wrote the lyrics for all the songs from 1974 to the bands end. His uses of lyrics are considered the best, thoughtful, inspirational, hell i could go on and go with adjectives to describe them. Alex Lifeson is without a doubt the most criminally underrated guitarist in the world and does not get nearly enough recognition who his ability and musicianship. Lastly, Geddy Lee is a man of many talents, he sings, plays keyboard/Synth and most importantly bass guitar, sometimes in the same song. He is regarded by many to be one of the greatest bass guitarists in the rock world.

When you talk about Rush, you have to keep in mind that all of their songs are different. They crafted music for over 40 years. Some songs are simple, some complex. Some fun, some serious. Some long and progressive, others short and to the point. They're always recognizable as "Rush", but their music has so many different vibes and feels. As for this song..... "Tom Sawyer" is a literal classic rock song. It's virtually perfect. If you sit and really listen to it and take it apart, you'll find that it's a perfectly constructed song that can serve as an example for the artform. For example, the lyrics and music match the theme and central character. The music is powerful, but restrained. The lyrics talk about the central character embracing change as the only true constant, and the lyrics, refrain, and chorus change and are not repeated verbatim. It talks about simple pride, and the power chords illustrate that. Even the ending is perfect. It states "Exit the warrior, today's Tom Sawyer.... he gets right on to the friction of the day", and then the song doesn't end. Instead, it just assumes a marching beat and fades away as if the character is marching off into the distance to accept his next challenge. This isn't just a great Rush song. There's lots of those. This is a great song for the genre. It'll be proven to be timeless.

At the end of the day Rush is Rush. At the time I recall Geddy Lee saying of Moving Pictures “some may feel betrayed.” I wasn’t. Then of Signals he said “Rush, Signals? What the hell is that?” I thought that too but ended up buying all the Rush studio albums on release, actually starting from Permanent Waves.

@@johndoherty7030 I've always loved the song, but I kept thinking that there was something about it that made it... more. More than just a good rock song or a great Rush song. So I really started listening to it and found it to be sublime. As great as I think they are, I think that when they wrote this, they hit upon something that transcended the artform. Like the Mona Lisa, it's a simple beauty that upon inspection is complex in its simplicity.

"Tom Sawyer" is one of the few songs that RUSH collaborated with an outside writer; in this case Pye Dubois, bassist for another Canadian band, Max Webster. Neal Peart (pronounced PEER-T) usually wrote all the lyrics for the band after he joined the band for their second album, Fly By Night. Geddy Lee (Bass / Keyboards) and Alex Lifeson (Guitar / Pedals) generally wrote the music to go with Peart's lyrics. RUSH is what happens when you put a top 3 drummer with a top 5 bassist and a top 10 guitarist. If you guys are rappers, you'll probably enjoy "Roll the Bones" the title track for the album of the same name, where Peart experimented with his own "rap" lyrics for a section after being impressed by some of the lyricism he heard in rappers of the late 80s/early 90s.

This is a THREE piece band!!! Geddy Lee (bass, vocals, keyboards, lyricist), Alex Lifeson (guitars), and Neil Peart (drums, percussion, lyricist). Peart died in Jan of 2020 and will always be, to me, the greatest drummer ever!! Amazing band, like no other...They were on a whole different level!! The first time I saw them live was at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas back in 1979 and OMG...OMG...OMG!!!
    MORE PLEASE!!

You two reminded me of myself when I was 14 years old in 1981. I was on a hockey trip in Ottawa, ON. The Canadian hockey opponent and I compared our record collections. The Canadian said, you don't have any Rush albums? How can you have a record collection without Rush? Then I said, "I hate that band." Then he said, you need to listen to the drummer. He is the best drummer on earth. Keep in mind, this time was shortly after John Bonham died.
It took me a few tries to appreciate them, but once I did I became hooked. Over 40 years later. Rush is like fine wine. You either loved them or hated them.

The thing about Peart and Carey: They can go absolute ballistic, smash every drum in a variety of rhythms, and always, always find the 1. The fill never goes too far.

I first heard Rush at the age of about 10 in El Paso, TX on KLAQ. Spirit of Radio. This band has ‘gotten me’, and been coursing through my veins ever since, about 44 years lol. I love seeing reactions from younger musicians who have never heard their genius. 👍🏻

God I love seeing reflections and introductions like this into cross genre conversations. Good for you guys! (By the way, check out Rush 2112. It'll blow your mind. But remember it's a STORY. It's incredibly multi layered. The entire theme is about freedom, integrity and control)
