I think my favorite thing about Alex is that he isn't about showing off. He gives each song exactly what it needs. But dear God does he do it well. This is one of my favorite solos. It's just so smooth and keeps building and building and then just drops back into the main melody. And Neil just murders the drums at the end. Plus he makes it look so damn simple.
Neil Peart wasn't originally in the band. It was Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and John Rutsey on drums. John left the band because of a combination of diabetic-related health problems, creative deficiency, and his distaste for touring. Neil cam in on their second album Fly By Night and the rest is history.
I wouldn't say so much creative deficiency as it was creative differences. He was more into hard rock vs Geddy and Alex's preference for progressive rock. Don't forget that Rutsey drummed on the studio version of Working Man...the song that introduced Rush to Cleveland, and eventually the whole USA! His drumming on Working Man clearly shows Rutsey had chops. Of course, we all know that the eventual introduction of Neil into the band was a turning point and ensured their lasting mark on prog rock!
@@RaymondBCrisp He was having trouble writing songs is what I meant. He would have trash cans full of discarded song lyrics and was growing increasingly frustrated because of it.
And technically, Neil came in for the US tour of their first album, which of course, was the album they did with Rutsey. I also think you are both right in what you said about why they asked him to leave. They say he was into bands like Bad Company and they were more into Yes - but another major factor was that Rutsey was a Type I diabetic and had been for years and they all enjoyed the drink and diabetics just cannot sustain that lifestyle and live for very long. It was actually just the anniversary of when Neil joined the band. July 1974, and it was the eve of their first American tour. The stars were aligned (the gods weren't maligned? Lol) for them for sure. Alex and Geddy had been friends since muddle school. Why Neil was always referred to as the new guy. Also, you kept saying David Lee Roth and I'm sure you meant Eddie Van Galen. Not sure DLR can hold a guitar let alone play one. That's mean of me to say but i said it anyway. Sorry if i offend anyone. But he is gross. Lol
Plot twist. Before Geddy, Alex and John were with their bass player Jeff Jones! He was Black dude too! He went on to become a one hit wonder and settled down with Tom Cochran’s band. Red Rider. Look at Jeff’s wiki. >> Jones performed with Alex Lifeson and John Rutsey in the first incarnation of Rush, serving as the primary singer and bassist in the summer of 1968. He was replaced by Geddy Lee in September 1968 before their second performance, after wanting to go to a party 🎈 🎉 …lol
Rush's breakthrough album was a 20 minute side A powerhouse (2112) as a big FU to the record label. Their more breakout radio hit in The Spirit of Radio is a slam to radio stations that sold out to profits. Their biggest album has a single about Neils views of fame that would make them even more famous. This band in greatness was a walking Paradox in how they broke into popularity while being grilled by "mainstream" music press. They became outstanding muscians, songwriters and stayed most humble on the ride. This song is perhaps a one song biography of the band
To get that amazing reverb on the solo, they put Alex’s amp out on the balcony with a microphone and recorded the sound of his guitar echoing across the lake and hills around the studio.
Live, he would sample and lock the high sustain note, then go into the arpeggios, then punch out when the power chords came back in. They were so amazing!
Just started watching, I'm 61,grew up in a fantastic musical era starting in the 60s and up I didn't understand what Rush was about until 1977 at 14 years old, my older cousin put the album sleeve in my hands and sat me down in front of a console stereo and took me on a journey that changed my life. You young brothers have such good inclination and observe, it should be a requirement in music to have to listen to overture among other Rush music, My kids are huge fans and my grandson will surely be also.so timeless!!
@@christophermartin5980 Who exactly? Certainly not guys like Vai, Eddie, Gilbert, you name it. Only guys like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Philip Sayce. SRV mostly copied Hendrix and Albert King.
I have had the pleasure of seeing them live. Both Alex and Geddy uses foot pedals to play a second instrument. When Geddy plays keyboards, he also plays bass with his feet. And in some songs Alex plays keyboards with his feet too. And in addition to this, Neil is playing melodic elements in addition to the drums on a pad. Its so amazing how they make music with six instruments played by three guys.
I’ve always said this is the crazy part. Alex Lifeson is the the 3rd best player in the band and he is INCREDIBLE, AMAZING, FANTASTIC. That’s how crazy RUSH is and they are only 3 of them. Also it’s not David Lee Roth it’s Eddie VanHalen LOL. It’s all good.
G.O.A.T There’s only 100 drummers to chose from… There’s only 250 bassist to chose from… There are 1,000 guitarist to chose from… This is why you see it the way you do! All 3 of these musicians must bring it in order for the stool to stand to the standard they’ve set … and absolutely nobody bring it like THE BOYS … Ain’t no weak link in this band PERIOD. All 3 Members of RUSH LIVE ON: Planet 🌍 G.O.A.T
YES!!!! They should react to that. I agree with this. Definitely made me appreciate Rush even more than I already did (I had been a fan of Rush for only a couple years at that point, and had only seen them once at the time).
I find it hilarious that so many young RUclips musicians are discovering and reacting to RUSH songs and how blown away they are. I continually hear “next level” “virtuosos” “master musicians n song writers”. For those under 25 Rush has been active since 1968, yah they have been crafting their trade for 53 years!!! They most definitely are next level virtuosos! The amazing thing about RUSH is that while only 3 in number they all play multiple instruments and all 3 write songs. They were “next level” when they first hit the stage and have been immortal rock Gods ever since. That so many, varied, and perfectly orchestrated performances could come one 3 man band continuously for 50 years while remaining relevant is nothing short of astonishing. They truly are one of the greatest rock bands ever, in my opinion the best all around rock band ever! They are GOAT and deserve that honorific. I simply cannot think of another band that had literally the level of proficiency at lead guitar, bass, and drums. Geddy easily gets honorable mention on keyboards as well. Few can question Alex Lifesons wizardry on the guitar and nobody in their right mind can question Neil Pert as greatest drummer ever. When you combine their mastery on their instruments with some of the deepest and most complex and appealing songwriting ever and you should get the picture! RUSH -GOAT’s trancending time and educating/motivating yet another generation of musicians just as they have for the last 50 years. Easily the most talented and prolific rock band in history imho. If you are a musician there are a million things you can do other than listen to RUSH but almost none of those things would help your musical ambition. Study RUSH and you will study a roadmap to success and legend!
You will eventually understand why RUSH is held in such high regard. Top Tier band. Nobody even like them. Not many bands are on this level. I saw them live 18 times in concert. It was extremely special RUSH night. Nothing like it. Clean, perfect, powerful every time. Zero mistakes ever! Delivered EVERY TIME live! Incredible live band! It’s hard to describe to people who’ve never experienced it.
You need to check Geddy Lee's favorite band Yes. Roundabout, Starship Trooper or Heart of the Sunrise. He played with them at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
Assuming they do get into Yes(I wouldn't say it's their cup of tea but I also wouldn't be surprised if they liked it), Roundabout would be a perfect start.
The fun thing with Rush is that most bands' guitar solo is focused on that solo with the rest of the band just playing a general riff in the song. All three members of Rush go into turbo mode during those solos. Free Will is probably my favorite for all three to just go to another level together.
They recorded eight albums at that studio. Le Studio was in the mountains in northern Quebec. Just last year it was torn down after years of neglect. Watch the movie Beyond the Lighted Stage a fantastic documentary of the band.☮️🇨🇦
Haha! "I need a cigarette!!" Classic Rush!! One of their biggest hits ever. Released 1981 Geddy ain't playing the bongos (actually congas) on this tune. He's just using them as a table. How did the planets align for this trio? Geddy and Alex were high school buddies in the 60s. Neil auditioned for the band in 1974. Imagine how different this band would've been if original drummer John Rutsey hadn't left the band? No Peart lyrics. No Peart progressive drumming.
This 60 year old Canadian from the same home town as two of the members, who remembers seeing them in the early 70's, is loving your reaction. Enjoy the massive collection of music that is RUSH. They are phenomenal.
If you want to stand in further awe of each member and solidify the compositional genius and technical prowess & finesse of Lifeson, you have to do the official video for La Villa Strangiato.
This guitar solo is my all-time favorite. It is an emotional journey that I always get swept up in. You nailed a lot of what I love about Rush: thee guys in an underground supergroup making great music. I love them! I never met Neil Peart, but I mourn his loss every time I think of him.
My first time here! Subscribed because the love you show Rush is spot on. I’m 64, loved them since in 1970’s. Seen them like 17 times. Not many can play their music. MasterClass. Thank you both. You know great music when you hear it! One of my greatest joys was watching them be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fan Forever ..
Love the reaction!!! So, Alex and Geddy have been best friends since high school and remain best friends to this day!! Neil auditioned for the band in 1974/1975 after their first album! I need to correct you on your David Lee Roth references…pretty sure you mean Eddy Van Halen!! You need to watch Rush…Beyond the Lighted Stage, and all your questions will be answered!! This band wasn’t just about the 70’s, they made 20 studio albums over 40 years, one of their best albums (Clockwork Angels, 2012) was their final album…give it a listen
IMHO two of best songs to showcase how good Rush were going to be are By-Tor & the Snow Dog, and The Necromancer when they were in their early 20's. The sound scapes they create are astonishing for mid 1970's. Then 2112 because if they'd not made that album we wouldn't have the rest.
Alex formed a trio band back in their high school days (around 1968) and after a few gigs, he recruited his classmate, Geddy Lee, to join on bass... They recorded their first album "Rush" (1973) with John Rutsey on drums - their first album was more of a straight forward hard rock album.. After their first release, Alex and Geddy were interested in going a more creative/progressive route, which Rutsey wasn't into so much and left the band. After auditioning a few drummers, they picked Neil Peart to become the drummer in 1974.... they then released "Fly By Night" (1975) and the rest is history, so to speak.... PS - Not sure if its been mentioned here before, but Neil wrote all the lyrics for Rush, while Alex and Geddy brought in most of the musical ideas.
Now that you both have heard the magic of this song. You need to check out the live version of this from " Exit Stage Right" possibly the best version of Alex's solo and also just the best way to see how that song comes alive live. 👊🤘
This is the album tour my husband went to in Toronto, Canada. Our babysitter was the wife of Rush's head roadie Master Ian Grandy (Nancy). That's as close to Rush as I ever got unfortunately. My husband had the enviable ticket to that Moving Pictures show.
Awesome guys - makes me smile seeing a new generation enjoying these older songs, keeping them alive!! THIS one is a CLASSIC, and so is RUSH 😉 TALENT BEYOND....👍
Been listening to rush since I was. Teenager in the 80s. Notice how Rush music makes you feel like you can do anything ? So powerful ? This will get you through good and bad tines. Keep the music of these guys in your ear through life, I guarantee it will elevate you , think deep, Be Great ! Make it Right ! 👍😎⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This solo in Limelight is Alex Lifeson's favorite to play. I saw these guy 14 times. Every tour from Grace Under Pressure. They were way better every time. I saw the 4th to the last RUSH show ever in Seattle. Lifeson is hands down the most talented guitar player in Rock and roll today. You would have to be perfect to play with Peart, and Lee. Any mistake would stick out immediately. These guys don't fuck around. Pure perfection was their goal from day one. Total class act in every way possible!! You guys kick ass! Love your feed!
Watch him in concert and you'll be blown away! Geddy gets it all done himself they all use foot pedals which trigger sounds in effects it's really impressive!
Geddy played synth with foot pedals, in addition to regular keyboards. I saw Rush live many times, and Geddy regularly was singing, playing bass, and playing keyboard with his feet simultaneously. Astounding musicians.
Outstanding choice here guys. This is an excellent example of the thing that has kept Rush fresh even now. Rush never sacrificed the art of songcraft. Meaning their songs no matter how complicated still sounded like songs. There are choruses there are verses and their shit is catchy. It's one thing to approach music like a technical exercise and another to be able to hone it into a song people can sing along with and still get in all the crazy stuff technically. By-the-by, Lee and Lifeson did grow up together, they played in club band cetera and came up together musically. Neal Peart joined their band in 1975 he was their second drummer.
This kind of thing is rare in the music world. Three guys that fit together like gears, they mesh perfectly and they know it. They were AMAZING to see live! They started as friends and ended as friends. That just doesn’t happen anymore. Rush was and still is a power house. Keep listening guys, you have a long way to go with this band lol. Love the channel, (I’m a new guy lol)
I’m new to this channel. I’m a huge RUSH fan. Watching your guys emotion shows me your appreciation for music and musicianship. Appreciated watching this.
I saw them in 1981in concert, seeing Geddy sing, play bass, and use pedals all at the same time blew my young mind. Been a bass player ever since. Limelight has always been one of my favorite songs.
You did a lot of older Rush, but they have one hard-hitting rocker from their very last album. Check out "Headlong Flight". It's long and fast and never lets up. It's like you need to catch your breath just from listening to it.
Alex and Geddy both grew up in Toronto and have known each other since middle school. Neil came in later. Legend says that he rolled up to his audition in a beat up station wagon with his drums stored in trash cans, set up, started playing, and the rest is history.
I just love seeing you react to Rush and how it blows your mind... Limelight has been my favorite song since 82. The lyrics are next level, and as you guys saw the guys are just the best at what they did. Multi talented doesn't begin to describe Rush they are above their peers on every level. Thank you for continuing to check out Rush and the other great music you react to.
Live shows were an experience that you just couldn't get anywhere else. On average, three hours of three guys just having the time of their lives sharing their music with their fans. I'm fortunate enough to have seen them dozen times on tour and every ticket was worth every penny I ever spent and more. And no, the only time they had extra musicians on stage was when they added a classical instrument section for Clockwork Angels released in 2012.
Here is my take on Hendrix or Alex. Jimmy started it, Alex turned it into something Amazing! It’s kind of like comparing a “model T” to a Ferrari. The model t was something way ahead of its time, a Ferrari is on another level completely. Alex all the way!
I just love the enthusiasm of you two and that you love Rush as much as I do. I only saw them once in concert, about 12 years ago. Wish I had seen them in the '70s and '80s when I was a teen and young adult and the music was being freshly released. My one big regret in life was not going to a lot more rock concerts during the golden age in the 1970s-80s.
I see you were watching the video. That place is Le Studio in Quebec, unfortunately it is no longer in use and is abandoned. Someone needs to rebuild it. Countdown by Rush is definitely one to watch to see Geddy play bass, keyboards, bass pedals and sing 'at the same time'
If you can find it, there’s a RUSH documentary called Beyond the Lighted Stage. It used to be on Netflix and is pretty much the history of the band. You will find that they are 3 very silly men. Their sense of humor is well known. Just one more thing that makes them so lovable. Again, another band that you need to hear all their stuff. I was a kid (teenager and younger) when I found out about them. So I’m a day one fan. In from the band’s beginning. They loved my city for this fact. We were day one fans before most others. They never forgot this and came here (San Antonio, TEXAS) for 98% of their tours. The band has stated openly that this is one of their favorite cities. We responded by showing that they are one of our favorite bands. It was a blast every time! Stories for days guys, stories for days. I think I already mentioned that I’ve seen them in concert 18 times. Epic live band!
10:30 through 11:15 (?) I have goosebumps through this entire stretch! Every time! Alex is so expressive during this run. I, personally, experience so many emotions. Incredibly powerful musical passage.
Better than Alex, just Jimmy Page. The guitar recording of "Since I've Been Loving You" in the studio was done in just one take and it's one of the most beautiful and exorbitant things ever played. A masterpiece that deserves a reaction from you guys. Hugs from Brazil!!!
Love Jimmy Page but in my view he's not in my top 5 of all time, Alex is. It's a subjective thing I understand, but I hold guys like Jeff Beck, Mark Knophler, Gary Moore in higher regard. Just saying.
Would have loved to have seen which video you were watching. Alex and Geddy met when they were 13 in junior high school. They bonded over their sense of humour and their love of music. Alex formed the band when they were 16 years old. They had a different drummer John Rutsy at the time but he had health issues and creative differences and was asked to leave. Neil auditioned and blew them away and the rest was history. I would suggest watching Rush Beyond the Lighted Stage to get their full story. There is a part where Alex at 16 playing Hendrix. Hendrix was an amazing player in his short career but Alex not only can he shread but he can do so much more! Check out LA Villa Strangiato official music video Working man live in Cleveland Also, their cover of Crossroads is a banger!! Cheers
Its not just that three technical masters come together, but that each of them are creatively geniuses. Its one thing to PLAY great music, but to create it... amazing.
Hard to believe that Moving Pictures is now 40 years old. I remember its release like it was yesterday. Since you guys are into the hard-rocking guitar thing - have you ever sampled anything from the Motor City Madman®, Ted Nugent? How about a classic, "Stranglehold"? You won't be disappointed. ruclips.net/video/hzFpiW5vHrc/видео.html
Alex is the best rock guitarist of all time. He has a hundred incredible guitar spotlight songs to prove it. His competition here, including Hendrix, have a dozen. There is no best guitarist. But Alex Lifeson's work and discography defies that so much that he takes the mantle. The best ever.

Geddy has synth pedals (like the pedals on an organ) on the floor that he plays while playing bass & singing. Awesome musicianship! Three epic players whose sum is even greater than their parts! Don't forget that Neil Peart (drummer/percussionist) also wrote ALL of Rush's lyrics! We'll miss him greatly!!
Hendrix was a completely different thing when he broke on the scene and obviously, in his short time on this earth he was one of the trailer blazers of what was then a new harder guitar sound, but if we’re talking skills, actual chops? It’s not really close. There really isn’t a style or genre Lifeson did not explore and master over 40+ years with Rush. From metal anthems to classical flourishes, many styles across several genres of music, including a genre they helped create and solidify as a viable, commercial enterprise, Lifeson and Rush were on another planet. And yes Geddy Lee and Neil Peart were the greatest rhythm section in all of Rock…mic drop
Geddy would sing while playing bass, and he had a synth setup with big pedals that acted as keys he could press. The dude is a machine.
So did Alex
Geddy played 6-string guitar in some songs, as well.

Lol
@@TheBlackQueen Oh...gotcha. Makes sense in that context.
You meant Eddie Van Halen not David Lee Roth, don't worry I got you Smokey
Also Steve Vai made the guitar talk, laugh and scream on David Lee Roth’s Eat em and Smile, like Yankee Rose or songs from Skyscraper. 👍🏼🎸
Stevie Ray is who they ALL learn from
And Eddie himself would tell anyone who'd listen that he learned his best tricks from Steve Hackett
@@christophermartin5980 Who exactly? Certainly not guys like Vai, Eddie, Gilbert, you name it. Only guys like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Philip Sayce. SRV mostly copied Hendrix and Albert King.
@@SmooveCLee Alex mentions Steve Hackett as one of his inspirations 😁
So true!! Pure magic though

3rd best?????!
Disagree with the 3rd best comment. All 3 are equally impressive
they're Neil's lyrics speaking about his uncomfortableness around fans and being famous. The song is about Neil.
discomfort is the word
Yeah sad he was so shy to do VIP seen them 20 times and never did it cause I knew he wasn’t going to be there
I miss Neil :(
@@hulaGUNZ Yes every time I hear a song from them...so almost every day
Check out Rushs Documentary
"Beyond the Lighted Stage"
I have it on DVD and It's AWESOME!
A must watch for sure!
Must see if you're a Rush fan for sure!
Rush Is Love Rush Is Life RUSH IS FOREVER
Alex Lifeson is the most criminally underrated rock guitarist in history. He never got the credit he deserved.
Never been a huge Rush fan but this song in particular I've always loved
Geddy and alex are highschool friends and they met neil after their original drummer left the band ,forming Rush .One of the greatest rock bands ever
Hard to believe they were only in their late 20's when they wrote this record. A true Masterpiece! 😎☮️
Nicely said, "going turbo" that's why they are a treat to watch live. The ability they have to all go off at the same time, is second to none.
They recorded eight albums at that studio. Le Studio was in the mountains in northern Quebec. Just last year it was torn down after years of neglect. Watch the movie Beyond the Lighted Stage a fantastic documentary of the band.☮️🇨🇦
From Sam Dunn's Studio? I like everyone's work from that group
What channel was the documentary on?
Awww man. That is so sad. Le Studio was iconic. Sorry to hear it fell in to neglect and no longer there. 🐰

Haha! "I need a cigarette!!"
Classic Rush!! One of their biggest hits ever. Released 1981
Geddy ain't playing the bongos (actually congas) on this tune.
You're only scraping the surface with their music as well! So many bangers.
And that my friends is why Rush will go down as one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever
Why not the Live in Rio version?? Lol. Alex is a nut!!
La Villa Strangiatio is a musical experience! These guys will be transformed 😌!! Rush is musical life!
Geddy plays bass , sings, synths and pedals live..incredible
This guitar solo is my all-time favorite. It is an emotional journey that I always get swept up in. You nailed a lot of what I love about Rush: thee guys in an underground supergroup making great music. I love them! I never met Neil Peart, but I mourn his loss every time I think of him.
I totally agree. I concede that La Villa is Alex's BEST solo but this one is my favorite! This solo is so lyrical.
Indeed that version rocks beyond imagination! In my hime town to boot!!
Or better yet, Exit Stage LEFT.... 🙂
Alex and Geddy went to middle school together. Neil came after the first drummer departed.
I’m pretty sure Rutsy and Neil were friends and that’s how Neil got introduced into the band
@@richierich398 interesting.....who's Rusty?
@@FreeMTrider the first drummer of rush. Only played in their first album called rush. He had health issues and left the band shortly after.
@@koolio8691 ooooh John Rutsey. I thought they meant someone other than him. Sorry I went blank there for a minute.
John Rutsy was the original drummer for only one album. Neil joined the group before they did Fly by Night ( album #2).
I watch you guys every morning. It gets my day started off happy! Ya'll crack me up!
"Red Sector A" is a great Rush song that tends to get overlooked. That would make for a great reaction!
You should check out the video “Dinner with Rush”. See these three just hanging out having dinner and several bottles of wine. They’re hysterical.
Their excellent documentary is on Netflix now.
Geddy is also a trio.. singer, bassist and keyboards
Oh hell yeah! I used to love singing this one on Rock Band.
I’m new to this channel. I’m a huge RUSH fan. Watching your guys emotion shows me your appreciation for music and musicianship. Appreciated watching this.
I love how much you guys are getting Rush. Welcome lol.
There is no Tool Tuesday without Rush influence. #Fact
So true
I just love seeing you react to Rush and how it blows your mind... Limelight has been my favorite song since 82. The lyrics are next level, and as you guys saw the guys are just the best at what they did. Multi talented doesn't begin to describe Rush they are above their peers on every level.
Thank you for continuing to check out Rush and the other great music you react to.
Gotta check out Freewill, lyric version. Lyrics are amazing, and time signature changes are incredible!!!!!!!!!!
Check it live…..foot pedals…..Geddy is so amazingly, but underatedly, talented
This band…. Rush….. has some of the most talented musicians, creative skills, song writing, performances that have ever existed in rock music!
Neil had two drum kits. One electric and one was traditional.
Love that remark at the of song - I need a week to think about this - brilliant reaction guys, love RUSH.
Alex has to go through so you can hear La Villa Strangiato. Pure guitar genius.
Canadians can certainly rock! Keep on rockin in the free world brothers!
Devildriver - The Mountain
Unearth - Endless
Alex Lifeson is the best!
I see you were watching the video. That place is Le Studio in Quebec, unfortunately it is no longer in use and is abandoned. Someone needs to rebuild it.
Countdown by Rush is definitely one to watch to see Geddy play bass, keyboards, bass pedals and sing 'at the same time'
Subdivisions is an excellent Rush song.
Primus is actually on tour doing nothing but rush covers rite now
I saw Rush on the tour where Primus was the opening act. One of my favorites.
10:30 through 11:15 (?)
I have goosebumps through this entire stretch!
Check out LA Villa Strangiato official music video
Working man live in Cleveland
Also, their cover of Crossroads is a banger!!
Cheers
The best three piece band period.
What Fred said.
Sweet.

Wow, I love your enthusiasm for the music I grew up with! Gives me goosebumps every time. My 14 yr old self is smiling proudly.
Just found you guys...Great stuff....Imagine growing up with these guys and NEVER missing a show...it was the best of times my friends...
