DIY Fireplace Remodel Pt 1: Whitewashing Brick & Custom Surround

- The living room fireplace was in desperate need of a remodel. So here are the beginning steps of how i remodeled it. The first step was to demo the old mantle, then I whitewashed the brick. After that I built a custom fireplace surround piece by piece. Enjoy!
Stay tuned for part 2 where I put shiplap on the wall, paint the entire thing, and wire up the outlets.

This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list ruclips.net/user/postUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

As a European, I’m pretty experienced mounting things on brick. Use masonry plugs, it will usually increase the strength of the hold and you won’t have the issue of your screws not going in.
What color white did you use for shiplap and trim?

Hey... so the problems you are having with the brick and screws ... i saw it in your video of a door too.....
there is a simple solution to that...
1. you drill a hole and use rawal plug to screw anything into brick or concrete....
2. a DIY solution is to use scrap pieces of wood to fill in the drilled hole and then screw into it....

Was it easy to take out the fireplace insert?
At 11:29 (when you were fixing the trim below the hearth) couldn't you have used rawl plugs instead of screwing it directly into brick?

I have a square gas fireplace with tiles around it. two beautifuo windows with shutters on each side and 3 avobe fireplace. Can I reshape fireplace to a rectangular shape and make it longer so I can place my 75 inch tv avobe ? right now it looks akward because tv is too big for fireplace. Maybe if I make fireplace rectangular and longer than tv it will look better? Is this a big job or not really?

What kind of wood is this?
I have seen so many TV mounts above the fireplace. Is anyone concerned about the heat rising from the fireplace and how it will damage the TV?
We don’t use the fireplace for fires so no concern there! I’m sure the tv would be ok, though I’d be more concerned about the electronics in the mantle (since it’s closer to the opening)

Yeah, I had my first house built about 2 years ago now. Everything from electrical work to add around my house Mainly installing Smart Switches, Installing up lights-outside, and fixing things where I would always call someone to do while in high school or ask my Dad all came to a screeching halt once RUclips came out and a few years went by!
You literally dint need to call anyone for 90% of the things you need to fix or build around or for a house. Other 5% would be doing stuff that requires getting a permit to do and if you want it to be insured and the other 5% would be just the things where it’s to much for one person.
If you can’t fix or remodel 90% of the things at your home nowadays then you are a lazy, weak, or just one of those men who don’t like to get that satisfaction of completing a job yourself. With the current RUclips along with the current Google out now any man can be a Ron Swanson type of man!
The table saw ALMOST took them fingers. Awesome work, but man use a push stick, don't destroy the most important tools you have.

Thank you! I wrote this immediately after seeing the after image at the beginning. That TV makes the mantle look ridiculous! Just by putting a 75” up there on a wall mount that can lower and rise the entire tv 3” down or 3” up would more than likely take care of the entire problem. But, I still think the mantle is to long! Disproportionate is an understatement with that little iPhone mounted up there being the actual TV!! lol! I wrote this and I believe this is not just my opinion but it’s so spot in that it is as close to a fact that one can arrive at in order to fix this!

I usually enjoy your videos espacially what you are doing in your workshop. But that fireplace looked so much better before. Plus I hope you will never use it because like this it is a real fire hazard the bricks and other materials arround the fireplace are rated for high heat for a reason. I hope you stay save for a lot more videos :)

First buy at the very least a 70” tv! So much mantel left over on both sides makes your TV look WAY SMALLER than it really is! You should have enough on both sides to put a smaller lamp on each side with at least 2” where the lampshade sits from the end and the same amount before the lampshade touches the TV.
I love how you made the mantle open to store wires, consoles, etc. seriously that was a great idea and you executed that part beautifully! But, first just look up measurements on line for the actual Tv dimensions and go get at a store like behind a Walmart or grocery store a big piece of cardboard and cut out the dimensions of a 75” you like then simply Place it up there with painting tape to hold it there. Really helps you to decide what you want.
****Make sure to buy a TV mount that holds the correct weight but also with the turning of a screw you can lift the TV up 3” or down 3” then you can get it close to the mantle if you need to so your tv is not way up to the ceiling. Great Job man! But that TV is absurd looking! lol!

Great little ditty man. Good job. I wouldn't have skirted the hearth though. Especially not in a soft pine like that. Not going to be long and top outside corners are going to start chipping out and/or just getting badly scuffed and gouged. You WILL regret it. Also, the skirt hides the full geometric look of the brick. Now it just looks like pavers set in a cheap little box and the skirt doesn't look as good against the flooring as did the brick.

Not something to joke about . The brick area around the fire place has specialty Rated Refractory Type Qualities . Wood , Glue, Nails , and other such products never come even close to Protecting you from the high heat and direct along with indirect heat and its reflections from any size fire. No Matter if Gas or natural - The products that are being used need to be rated for Close Contact to High Heat . This is not a window trim out or some floor board detail. Manufacturers have a Whole Entire line of Specialty Products for these types of Applications for a reason . Ever heard of a Chimney Fire before ? The amount of issues that fire places create far out weight they amount of brad nails , elmers glue , or pine boards combined to Stop a fire out of control instead of CONTROLLING the fire burning inside. TAKE THESE WORDS SERIOULSY ! You added so many Combustible Products directly next to a High Heat Source that Smoky the Bear would be running to the hills to save is butt and that is nothing to brush aside when families are sleeping right by your side. Oh , By the Way ( HEADERS ) be them Load Bearing or Merely Decorative need to be Larger than the span they are Covering . A 4x4 post is not Four Inches by Four Inches. You should have put in at least a 6 to 8 inch Version to Keep ( THIS Old House ) from falling down around you. What was the norm in the 1920's is Anything BUTT Normal for modern day building codes. You sure have opened up a can of worms that may just find you out in the cold if is all comes crumbling down around you . Last but Not least. Before tearing into anything ( RESEACH ) the Current Methods and Restrictions of What you can , should , or would do ( BASED ) on what the Up to Date Products and there practical uses are ahead of time. Inspectors love to Pick Apart ( D I Y ) projects for they Rarely come close to What is needed , expected , required , and allowed. Think All this sounds HARSH . Wait until you have to explain to your Home owners insurance carrier how you Saved a bundle and now are living on the streets in dire need of some relief … Word to the Wise : Think - Before you act and always ( Act ) accordingly to what others forget to think about in the first place.

We all hear what you're saying, but maybe this family doesn't have any plans to use the fire place and it's only there for decorative purposes. Maybe the next people that live in the house won't use it either. We just bought a house from an original owner of 30+ years and she never used the fireplace once. We aren't either. So sure, maybe it's not safe IF you use the fireplace, but if you don't, I don't see the issue. Inspectors can nail you all you want, but if the buyer doesn't care and has no plans to use it then....why should you?

You do realize you’re not supposed to mount a television above a wood burning fireplace, right? The smoke from the wood damages the television.

Man you are lucky to still have your 10 fingers !!!!!! 1- Always have your table saw to your height 2- Always have a roller or sawhorse to receive the exiting wood 3- Always have a push stick when you have 2" or less of cutting materiel 4- NEVER NEVER NEVER pull the materiel on the EXITING SIDE !!!!!!!!!!! AND LEAVING THE TABLE SAW ON !!!!!!!!!! Please use youtube to your advantage and see what has to be done with a table saw before using it or other tools for that matter !!! Well, just get the wood that is not warped, bowed, or cupped?!! Obviously saying “never to get wood at Home Depot!” is asinine. Getting plywood, crown molding, base board, and anything is just perfectly fine from Home Depot. I would always go to a Lumber store though before Home Depot!
I’m talking about a good lumber store like McKee Lumber or anyplace that doesn’t just have a complete inventory of warped, bowed, and cupped wood is good to go. Great thing about Hone Depot is they dint have 1 store anywhere in the country that just sells nothing but warped, bowed, and cupped wood! Hahaha! But, never go to Hone Depot first if you are looking for the best wood or if you are wanting a lot of it as in to frame a house! Lumber stores are going to have better Limber for the most part and deff. a wider selection of not just products but brands as well! But, you can 100% find wood at Home Depot that is completely fine as in a HUGE or VAST majority of it! If Home Depot only sold wood that was warped, bowed, and cupped then they would not be able to sale the VAST MAJORITY of what makes up a HUGE % of their store’s profits! The reason why Home Depot’s are all over the country is due to these two dipshits being 100% incorrect ignorant fools!
It would mean, no wooden shutters would ever be sold, no wooden doors, no wooden garage doors, no cabinets, no bathroom vanity’s, no loose wood, no base boards, no crown molding, and so much more that it’s clear I am factually correct!
