Interesting trivia - Sling Blade is one of only three films to win the Adapted Screenplay category without a Best Picture nomination. The other two are The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Gods and Monsters (1998).
1996 was a great year in cinema! Fargo, Jerry Maguire, Trainspotting, Breaking The Waves, Secrets & Lies, Sling Blade, Scream, Lone Star, Independence Day, Bound, etc.
prob because it was a labor of love for Billy Bob Thornton, I think. so the crowd was behind him, they love when a fellow actor penned their own screenplays. heh
Ha! Two excellent, supremely well-written films that still hold up to this date. And are very meme-able to boot. They don't make 'em like they used to.
When I see Django Unchained on Netflix they're not on there anymore either but I'm pretty sure the old movies like you're saying Pulp Fiction is still on there
Am I the only one who thought it was rude of Joel to just walk up to the stage without sharing a kiss with his wife Frances? He just got up like "Sorry honey. An Oscar is calling for me".
I don't think it's rude. They're just not a schmoopy couple that shows off in public. They are very modest and authentic. I guess they'd rather kiss at home and not in front of cameras
And now Billy Bob Thornton is actually starring in Fargo the TV series...
+shounenbat510 Also kinda cool that they went on to do The Man Who Wasn't There together.
Hank from "Monster's Ball," himself.
David Thewlis appeared as one of Maude's assistance in The Big Lebowski and has later on appeared in Fargo (T.V) too.
shounenbat510 great connection
Yup
Little did they know that Billy Bob Thorton and Fargo would close the gap together with the first season of the Fargo television show!
WoW
I like how Sling Blade got a standing ovation from most. Terrific film
Jodie Foster was very beautiful in this
Not only do I like her as an actress. I liked her as a director of the movie Home for the Holidays
@@stefanmovieflixtomasi She advised Robert Downey Jr to seek help with his addictions during the shoot.
@@hawkeyepierce12 I heard about that
Jodie's voice can cease a war
This was a great screenplay, with great characters in it, that Billy Bob Thornton wrote.
“Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein, god bless them.”
If he had only known.....
You think he didn’t? lol. Keeping your mouth shut might get you an Oscar
😅
Glad they changed the names of the writing Oscars, best adapted screenplay and best original screen play sound way better
Lester, have you been a bad boy?
aw jeez
Billy Bob Thornton deserved to win the OSCAR for his film
Interesting trivia - Sling Blade is one of only three films to win the Adapted Screenplay category without a Best Picture nomination. The other two are The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Gods and Monsters (1998).
Sling Blade is an awesome movie. So deserved.
1996 was a great year in cinema! Fargo, Jerry Maguire, Trainspotting, Breaking The Waves, Secrets & Lies, Sling Blade, Scream, Lone Star, Independence Day, Bound, etc.
Independence Day? Your freaking joking right...one of the worst movies ever. It ripped off everyone from Irwin Allen..from Plan 9 from Outer Space.
Never saw Plan from Outer Space. Thanks for reading.
I'm so GAGGED Jodie's pantsuit is everything!!!
It was a trending fashion of 90s
Man, you know you have done good writing if you got a standing ovation for Best Screenplay
And the only one to get an applause during the nominations announcement..shows that Sling Blade is a masterpiece
Sling Blade and Fargo has great screenplay.
For you, all the Oscar winners in all categories in every year were deserved. You are amazing.
Sling Blade is such a beautiful film
It’s a bit more better than Monster’s Ball as I found it graphic
They should’ve nominated Scream for Original Screenplay (Fargo still would’ve won)
2:10 😬
Jokes aside, very good job on Billy Bob Thorton's part. Amazing film.
You can always tell who's going to win. The audience applauds the loudest.
Billy Bob is so talented
Shep Proudfoot. That's a name.
Citizen Ruth should've gotten a nod that year
Strange (but thankfully) that English patient lost
Why⁉️
It was boring, slow pace and long script. But its beautiful picture that deserved the oscar for BP
Two spectacular movies.
He should've also won best actor for it.
4:19 is the best thing ever.
Hahaha I thought I was the only one who picked up on that XD
+AcademyAwardsPerson Felicity should be in a Coens movie!
Fargo is one of the best movies to win this award.
Next to Citizen Kane, Pulp Fiction and Chinatown.
I agree with Fargo, but I think that Hamlet should've won. Trainspotting was also very good, so I'd put that as a close second.
Fuck Hamlet
FARGO was an original screenplay. HAMLET and TRAINSPOTTING were not. Branagh didn't spin that script out of thin air.
It's kinda funny how he's gonna be in the Fargo series in April. Trainspotting was a close second to Thornton's work though.
Wow, did people fucking love Sling Blade that year or what?
prob because it was a labor of love for Billy Bob Thornton, I think. so the crowd was behind him, they love when a fellow actor penned their own screenplays. heh
masbond84 John Smisek And I'm sure you two saw the standing ovation Billy Bob received as he walked up to the stage.
Indeed, it seems strange that it beat ''The English Patient'' in that category.
Winduct English Patient sucked ass
@@masbond84 It's also (IMO) one of the greatest movies ever written. Everything about is is masterful.
Jodie kinda looks like Princess Rosalina there
That was a great year; just listen to the list of other nominees! But of them all, I liked Fargo best.
Notice we only heard real cheering for SLING BLADE.
Ha! Two excellent, supremely well-written films that still hold up to this date. And are very meme-able to boot.
They don't make 'em like they used to.
Should have won best actor
Should have won best picture.
Fargo is great, although I love "Jerry Maguire" very much too.
Best Film Ever
Sooo good to see all that praise, hm-mm.
So just being "nominated" but not winning the award is still looked as being something impressive
Should have been Train Spotting.
imagine they won best picture and that score played
When I go on IMDb Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein do not say they produced it anymore
@James Mitchell I realize the executive producers I'm saying they're not credited in the movies anymore because of the allegations
When I see Django Unchained on Netflix they're not on there anymore either but I'm pretty sure the old movies like you're saying Pulp Fiction is still on there
Wow none of the award recipients hugged their domestic partner before walking up to accept.
Trainspotting and Secrets & Lies should have won.
"Yeah?"
Trainspotting should have won.
Matheus Sales hahahahah no, no it shouldn’t have
Trainspotting is good.
Sling Blade is a masterpiece.
Billy Bob named Elizabeth Taylor because he had met her recently. Dopey name-dropping. :-P
Imaging fucking m.v.p. Clarice Starling Giving an goddam oscar to Karl Childers
For original should have been either Cameron Crowe for Jerry Maguire or Mike Leigh for Secrets and Lies
no
That shirts a little too small billy boy.
Should'be won Shine for Best Original Screenplay
1:50
(cue Yello's "Oh Yeah")
1:10
I cringed when he mentioned weinstein
The funniest Weinstein reference is the one from Nathan Lane when he announced Best Animated Film at the 2002 segment
Trainspotting should've won
Trainspotting
God bless Harvey Weinstein nobody seem that coming well deserved Mr thorton he should’ve won for best actor he killed that role
Am I the only one who thought it was rude of Joel to just walk up to the stage without sharing a kiss with his wife Frances? He just got up like "Sorry honey. An Oscar is calling for me".
Same thing with Billy Bob Thornton. I think they divorced the following year though.
Pretty ironic seeing Frances won an Oscar that same night...
I don't think it's rude. They're just not a schmoopy couple that shows off in public. They are very modest and authentic. I guess they'd rather kiss at home and not in front of cameras
Shine and Trainspotting should have won
no
You again, your opinions stink
