Participating in cleanup is huge. My biggest insight into the waste produced by smokers was my time as a janitor sweeping a parking lot just outside the smoker's door. Dustpan after dustpan of discarded butts every couple weeks literally made me want to be violent towards people who just toss their cigs.

I don't live anywhere near the sea, but in my home area in Germany, we used to have a big spring cleaning campaign where school children would go and collect trash anywhere in nature. It was well organized, every school participated, every cleaning group had their own areas and afterwards they would put in the newspaper how much trash was collected. I just looked it up out of curiosity. They're still doing it all over the country. Even this year with corona.
If you want to do something, you could organize one of these events over facebook yourself. it helps. it does.

Corporations want us to believe everything is the fault of the individual, and therefore the solution is with the individual. It's a load of crap. Every time I'm out hiking or at the beach, I pick up trash. Things like dropped litter is the fault of an individual or a group of several individuals. Corporations could do more, a coffee shop chain might charge 20p for a non reusable cup, that 1p cup should be either biodegradable and/or reusable but it's the standard one.

(and this isn't to say that everyone should or can start gardening, but growing food at home is a revolutionary act that flies in the face of most of the things that are wrong with our current society and I highly recommend it, at the very least because the food usually tastes significantly better)

I can appreciate it on one level, but it is generalizing. The expectation to not marginalize is placed on people in general, but white males typically are held to an elevated standard for social validity while people who suffer from marginalizing white males use it as a weapon in a socially acceptable way to disparage against those who are offenders while lumping in men who are not. Its understandable that its being used to create an example to draw empathy from, but the hypocrisy also draws considerable counter productive spite. Granted, that does depend on the applicable social circle.

Mangry kind of seems to reinforce toxic masculinity. Even I took a small amount of salt from the word. As someone is not angry. Thats not helpful even if its effective. Its like calling someone a "Karen". Its just being used to target disgruntled men. Mansplaining makes sense... Because most men gloss over details while explaining things. So when you are told someone mansplained something you can expect to need to give a more precise and detailed explanation. Mangry suggests women are incapable of this same response and that is simply inaccurate and a form of negligence since men are already consistently under fire as a whole for "toxic masculinity" and while some things some men do are definitely toxic and needs some reprogramming the reality is its a general assault on men (as if it were a choice to be born with an excess of testosterone or be nurtured into what we become.) When it is not the majority of men that are the issue. We need to stop trying to hurt each other. We should focus more on the future of our planet, our families and our race in that order. That would be the best use of our time and energy.
I still don't understand why are you not #teamseas ? You didnt seem to have an issue with the movement itself. You pointed out the appreciation for beach clean up and specified that teamseas is supporting the right parts of the clean up.
Also it shouldnt fall to one person and his ideas to clean up the entirety of the ocean. Why are we critisizing his project just because it cant answer the problem alone? A single wind turbine wouldnt run a city. A single solar panel wont run a house.its a collective effort and someone needs to take the first step. Talking about the problem like the only solution will be one that answers it immediately and with no drawbacks. But it took a while to become such a problem andthe problem isnt fixed they are simply trying to mitigate the damage. The problem still comes down to the people that have no other means of disposal besides the ocean or rivers that lead to the ocean. And as much as the nets hurt the sea life it sorts through or some times kills I think the difference would be pretty insignificant compared to the inpact the plastics and other trash have on them. Even without dying in nets sea life eats glass or get stuck in plastic bags or in those plastic racks for cans. It just seems a little misguided to hate on someones actual efforts that are at least trying to do something instead of just talking about it.
Edit - I will also mention I am no fan of Mr.beast but I am totally a fan of someone using their fandom/popularity to make helpful and meaningful changes.

@@jestagaming8123 mansplaining doesn't mean you didn't go into detail, it means you felt the need to explain something to people (usually women) who didn't need or ask for it. Because men have a tendency to act like we're an authority and everyone needs to hear what we have to say, even if we don't really know anything about the subject. "When you are told someone mansplained something you can expect to need to give a more precise and detailed explanation" is literally the opposite of what you should do! That's just mansplaining more
See this is the thing - it doesn't have to come from a place of superiority or anything, it can just be ignorance, but men tend to be socially conditioned to push their ideas and opinions onto other people, and to believe they're smart and informed. And often to treat women as less important, less capable, people who lack knowledge and understanding and who would benefit from having stuff explained to them
It's not a coincidence that it tends to be dudes all showing up to tell people what's up (yes I get the irony that I'm literally doing that here), and it's not a coincidence that women especially get targetted for this kind of stuff, especially if they dare to express an opinion. It's those attitudes and experiences that get words like "mansplain" and "mangry" coined in the first place - it's coming from a particular place, with a gendered dynamic. And honestly, the "not all men" thing really doesn't help, because that behaviour is stuff that does need criticising. If you get defensive then you're defending it, y'know?

Ocean Cleanup's 2 trawler ships pulled in to port in Victoria BC, Canada near the end of October, at the end of a 12 week effort which netted (hah!) just 29 metric tons of garbage.
About a week later, a container ship caught in a storm in the same area lost 106 containers, and caught on fire. Some of the containers held hazardous materials. Most of them are believed to have sank. But some of them floated hundreds of kilometres north, some making shore and spilling their contents, coating parts of the west coast of Vancouver Island with a hell of a lot more than 29 tons of garbage.

Hello. I just stumbled across your video. The reason I found your content is because I was (am?) considering donating to #TeamSeas and I wanted to read and hear more diverse opinions on the initiative itself and its proponents.
You raise very good criticisms of Boyan Slat's projects and a great summary of the situation.
People need to stop thinking they can single-handedly tackle hard problems like pollution without changing the minds of their 7.9 billion fellow humans (still growing at a rate of 2.5 every second) as well as tough, entrenched social and economic issues like unsustainable consumerism, inequality, exploitation, and poverty, which in many cases underlie the creation of pollution.
As far as #TeamSeas, my conclusion is that its promoters generally seem to be considered honest persons (meaning they don't seem to be blatant scammers) and the non-profits that are involved seem to be trustworthy as well. In my opinion, donating to such an initiative instead of directly to the non-profits has the added bonus of visibility into a large number of people's news feeds and media outlets.
With that being said, I did find a smudge of distasteful content in your commentary. Why did you have to add a serving of sexist-themed and simply immature terms such as "mangry", "dick anger", "audience of small male children"... to an otherwise very informed piece of content? It makes you look passive-aggressive for no reason at all and has the only effect of weakening your discourse.

So let me get it straight: It's not quite that thing which was woefully mismatched to the scale of the problem it was trying to solve and became part of the problem, but it's still more like that than the thing everybody qualified to give an opinion says we need to be doing but will mean some incredibly wealthy people will need to invest their own money in their own businesses to not be a burden on the rest of global society.

I didn’t know much about the history of the guy running the operation and how he really screwed up and plagiarized a design from someone else. About 12 years ago I was working at an event in London with some politicians spouting claptrap about saving lives in Africa. Around that time CocaCola was under heavy criticism because they had bought up the rights to fresh water springs and even ground water. They were pumping so much out that the water table dropped and crops started to shrivel and die. I can't remember which African country, but they had no safe tap water and relied on bottles. Cocacola was astoundingly much cheaper than the water, it having soared in price because of their corrupt monopolising of the limited resource. Additionally, the process of creating 1 litre of CocaCola took something like 5 more litres in the manufacturing process.
They were rightly facing considerable criticism, there was a drought in the region with people dying of thirst while they profited. Additionally there were high rates of cholera and diarrhoea is easily lethal if you aren't provided with copious water they couldn't afford. The Tory Government ministers invited CocaCola to this event where they make a big song and dance about how they were giving back to Africa. That from now on when you bought a box of Coke in Africa, they would for FREE toss in sachets of dehydration salts! The wealthy crowd clapped enthusiastically at their selfless benevolence, well done Coke for saving Africa! It was utterly disgusting and left me feeling queasy for weeks.
Just like in this video, people are quite happy to support a cause that makes them feel like they are doing something for the planet. Coke had their public campaign for others to support, how easy to donate rest assured that Africans are generously being looked after by Western pity with sachets of salts. To actually make a difference would require people to start boycotting Coke, to contact their MPs and try to force the multinational's hand akin to Nestle's milk formula, hopefully before too many babies die this time. It requires the public to accept that the west is not the hero, that we are still exploiting Africa and to make a stand.
But no, far easier to tweet #teamafrica and donate money to CocaColas exploitation whitewash charity. The super rich and influential are given praise for philanthropy while they divert money from incredible charities who have worked in the region for decades alongside scientists, engineers and innumerable experts. It is not even benign, the corporate lead expertise free campaigns actively damage the real work being done with lasting impact.
Sorry for the rant, but your mention of CocaCola brought back that old frothing rage at the same company yet again using the same tactic and somehow it is still working.

Their net specifically designed not to catch marine life and is actively monitored through a camera skiff by a marine biologist onboard the main vessel.
It seems the main contention is the fossil fuels burnt by the ships, but they are working on reducing that as well with low-carbon fuels and other modifications to the ships propulsion.
They eventually hope to be carbon neutral, but they are trying to get started on an otherwise unsolvable problem which will never go away on it's own. Over the next decade, they can get better ships, but here in the testing phase they have to use what they have.
And they have already removed over 27,000 kg of plastic from the Pacific Ocean over the last few months. Most of that time was spent testing the system and making sure that the camera skiff was operating properly so they wouldn't endanger marine life.
They are also doing a lot of real, peer-reviewed science on the problem of ocean plastic. They sampled all the way down to 2,000m below the surface and manually collected and analyzed more than 12,000 plastic fragments larger than 0.5mm.
These aren't just some sham tech-bros as they have been called on other comments. There is legitimate and important science being done by these guys. Sure, their original design didn't work, but I think she mischaracterized it when she said it broke apart and became ocean trash. Their website says that it broke and the crew and system were safely returned to shore.

That story about meeting the litter pickers is so wholesome

Frankly, laws and fees need to be enforced and made much more severe when it comes to throwing rubbish into the ocean. It’s simply too easy.

He's not trying to single handedly solve the ocean pollution problem but instead get younger people to care more and see what they can do, even if they can't go out to the beaches themselves to clean it. He is one man and he knows he can't fix the ocean by himself. That's why he started something to get the ball rolling, to get a conversation started, to make an example. I feel like you and a lot of other "creators" are reading into it too much or at least reading the whole situation wrong.

I really connect with your love of the ocean; I also don’t know what I would do without it! Okay, that out of the way, here’s what I want to say. This is gonna be long:
I agree that TeamSeas cannot solve the underlying problems, but it definitely has its place. Popular social influencers educating their (mostly young) fan base is important. Raising awareness that these issues exist is important, and I firmly believe that education is the key to change. Also, everyone involved is connecting with the environment in a way that will impact their own lives, and who knows the change that could lead to?
I think TeamSeas has the opportunity to do a whole lot of good. They’ve already gotten public attention - now, let’s use that attention and direct it towards the big picture. After all, every wonderful idea the science community has that could help stop the problems are useless if nobody outside the community, the people who will enact these ideas, knows it exists.
Also, don’t pay mind to the angry comments - they’re definitely children. They weren’t sent by influencers, though, they really are just children who think you’re attacking their role models. Which, you aren’t, but children don’t really understand that 😂
Also also, just an FYI, I think the title of your video is a biiiiit agressive. If you frame the video in a negative light, people will come to the video in a negative state of mind. The world is already distressed enough, and adding more fuel to the fire (especially when interacting with children); I just don’t know if it’s useful. I say this with so much love. You don’t have to listen, of course, but I can always say it! 😁
Whew, thanks for coming to my TedTalk, I guess 😂 You have a good day!

A lot of words to defend "popular social influencers", when 99% of the video isn't even about them lol

I donated to team seas before I realized it was partly Boyan Slat behind it.
    I regret donating.
