- Here is a quick video of how I built a headboard for my wife with 95% pallet wood. I think it came out great and really gives the room a nice rustic look... which my wife loves:)
It is an easy project that any skill level can accomplish. Hopefully it'll give you an idea of what you might be able to build with some free pallet wood. As always, thanks for watching!

This is a really cool project- Nice attention to details-like the little bits of advice on linseed oil to age the cut edges!
Excellent Sr. Congrats!! Thanks a lot!!
Headboard looks really great, good job thanks for sharing.
+robert dellinger Thanks Robert!
Joe
Hey!!... What´s up?... I´ve been planning to do the headboard since a lot time ago... but the way you do it in this video... encourages me to actually DO IT ( because looks so EASY! ). Thanks for sharing your amazing idea. I will do it... and I will share the picture!.
Finished mine today! Thanks for the video.. It turned out awesome!
Looks good. Most pallet headboards I've seen look like, well... pallet headboards. I like how you finished the edges, I think that's the extra step that made it look like something you'd pay big money for at a furniture store. Might have to try making one myself one of these weekends.
Love the look and design. I was thinking along the same lines as this project. I also love the rough look but I finish my pallet projects with a matte finish. Some gloss but mostly matte. Again, awesome build.
Man, it's amazing what a pallet can turn into, nice work bro!
+John Stern thanks John!

The Wait Is Over Thanks TWIO! Glad you liked it:)
Nice work , lots of cool detail ,thanks for sharing
thanks so much!
Joe
I really liked how you did the work and most of all the presentation, it was fast and to the point. The final project turned out well. I hope you make more such as this. I am making a headboard myself, not as fast ha ha but still think it will turn out well. I used fence material as its lighter and already is rough sawn and staining with a blue and gray stain. Its not as cheap as your to make but that wasn't my intention. Im also using 4x4 posts for each side and I'm going to attach it to the bed rails. Right now its solid boards across the whole width, I may cut it up a little as you did, I think that will look better.
Thanks again.

Hey my brother I love pallet wood there are free and very nice to work with good job bro :)
Looks amazing man! I've been wanting to create a wall in my house with a rustic wainscoting on it. This wood would work! Thanks for the idea!
Dorian Fajenski Thanks Dorian! I love the look of those walls too! I'm actually going to be doing something similar to replace the pegboard behind my workbench… just trying to figure out the system for mounting my tools on it… hopefully soon:) Thanks for watching!
Joe
I have (and probably most handy guys) have a serious love/hate relationship with Pinterest haha sometimes good for inspiration and on occasion can help with projects but more often than not it just stacks up your honey-do list!
Great job. I think I can do this.
Gotta make this bedhead , looks really great, thinking of tricking it up tho, going to add shackles and handcuffs ( bondage look) just to give everyone that sees it a shock factor 😂
wow amazing congratulations ill do it
great job
Thanks so much Steven!
Joe
Great work, I recommend you take the pallet to the car wash and power wash them before use. It can't hurt, thanks for the great example.
Dennis Myles Thanks Dennis... that is good advice, especially since it's hard to know what was stored on many pallets:) Thanks for the comment and for watching Dennis!
That's a great idea!
Great job! How did you mount the headboard? To the wall, or the frame.
This looks AMAZING! I am planning on doing this project this weekend with my husband. I do however have a couple questions. What do you use to mount it on the wall? How did you come up with the measurements for each piece of wood? Thanks for sharing this step by step video.
Misty Rowe Thanks Misty! For the mounting, I used wood screws through the top (at a downward angle) into the wall and for the legs (since they aren't flush to the wall like the top) I used simple 'L' brackets. And for the wood slats I really didn't measure them, I just laid out the pieces and cut them to fit. As you see on the video I put the first in, then I cut the second and third pieces where they wouldn't have their edges line up with the row above or below.
For the frame of the headboard I did use the width of the bed (queen, king, etc,.) to figure how wide I wanted it. And for the height I just eye-balled it to see what I thought looked good. I don't think you can go wrong with higher or lower though... just depends on what you like style-wise:)
Anyways, I hope that helps and I hope you guys love the final result of your project. We sure do! Thanks for watching Misty:)
Joe
You could use old weathered fence boards too
great work, :D
Looks like a 1000 dls headboard to me, genius !!!!!
+Israel Ramirez Thanks Israel! :)
Does the bed rails are attached to the board? And awesome job sir
gr8 but cud you do a short video about how you fixed it to the bed frame? Cheers
Beautiful headboard. How did you make the corner pieces and how does the bed frame attach to the headboard?
Very good project thanks for sharing...I have just started getting into the pallet wood building movement and I am noticing a lot of construction without the use of wood glue. Have you had any issues with the imperfect joints without glue applied to them?
James Wheeldon Hey James...Wood glue is almost always a good idea for wood projects... sometimes though with my pallet stuff I just get impatient and reinforce later with screws, etc,. But for joinery or something that might be a little more refined, I'd definitely say wood glue should be used. Anyways, I hope that answered your question and have fun on your next pallet project! I love seeing what I can get out an old pallet....thanks for watching:)
Joe
for the corner trim pieces, did you just glue 2 pieces of pallet wood together, or did you nail them together first? very nice looking piece.
Love the frame, headboard and the quilt very much. I always wanted a headboard like that. Where did you guy purchase the quilt? It's very nice.
Eff Moondust Thanks EM! The quilt was actually a gift from a friend... I believe it was purchased from Garnet Hill. Thanks for the nice comment and for watching:)
Joe
Nice! about how many pallets does it usually take to do one on average?
Beautiful! What size bed was this for? It looks like a full size in the video. We have a king.
Katiesmommy0805 I believe it's a queen... but my wife may correct me:) Anyways, if you are doing a king bed you'll want to measure your bed frame and add about 2-3 inches to make sure the headboard is wide enough once you add sheets, comforter, etc,. Hope that helps and thanks for watching K'sMom!
Joe
This is a great video. Do you have printable directions for a queen headboard? What advance would you give if working with really old varying sized pallets? My pallet boards aren't as smooth and I have to dismantle them myself. And safety tips, or nail size, drill/gun tips? You are a very nice husband. Thanks, Deb the jiffygirl cause I'm on a budget.
Debby Spencer Hey Debby, sorry but I don't have any instructions for the headboard as I often do my projects by 'eye' ;) But its not too hard to get it looking good for your bed frame. Basically the 'frame' that I attached the pallet wood too was about 1.5" wider on each side as the metal frame that the box spring rests in. After that, it's just finding those nice little pieces that have the age/greying that you like!
Regarding nails/screws: I used screws for the frame portion and 16 gauge finish nails for attaching the pallet pieces. But you could easily use a hammer and finish nails as well and get the exact same look... might take bit longer but just as good:) And when using screws just make sure to predrill as pallet wood can split and/or bind up the screw if it is hardwood pallet wood (oak, etc,.).
And lastly for the pallet wood... it's a labor of searching to find the right smooth/greyed pieces. I feel your pain. I often find the newer but broken 'pine' pallets that are broken and don't have the character of the greyed out smooth pieces. Just keep your eye out... you'll find enough of the pieces you want eventually :)
Anyways, hope that helps and if you ever post any pics or vids of your headboard I'd love to see what you come up with!
Joe
Ok it does help. Thanks for responding and again for your post. Jiffygirl.
No prob Debby:)
Joe
he I really like this and I am thinking about making one for a full size bed do you remember what size the pallet boards were
+Dalton Langley Hi Dalton... just standard width like 3.5-4" or so. Hope that helps:) thanks for watching!
Joe
thanks for replying to my comment this will really help bout to make mine in a couple of days just got my pallets did you bolt it into the bed frame?
I like it ;)
What are the dimensions of the headboard? Frame legs height and actual headboard height and width? started dismantling pallets today just for this and am planning on using your design and this information will be super helpful! thank you!
What size bed is this headboard for and do you have the measurements for everything ? Thanks I’d like to build my own as well
Desde Argentina saludos. Haré el mismo respaldo de cama. Gracias.
