This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Why don't you update the price while you're at it? That way people won't be surprised by their bill when they go to Home Depot, seems kind of unfair to me.. I'm assuming it's because nobody wants to watch the $80 video?
I just finished this headboard project yesterday! It came out fantastic! I'm 45 years old and I have not built anything with wood since wood shop in high school ! This tutorial was well put together and easy to follow. The only thing I added was 2 additional 20 3/4" 1x4 on the front! My brother who works in construction made that one suggestion. It really firmed up the entire piece and prevented bowing of center 1x10 boards. So instead of one giant recessed square I have 3 equal in size. It adds a really nice look! Anyways I really have to thank rehab life for this video ! It saved me lots of money and resulted in something that looks like I paid a lot for !
All I can say is I followed the directions and I am proud of my results. It was a little Christmas project. Thanks and Happy Holidays. Oh yea, in Georgia materials came out to about 80 bucks.
These guys are great!! I built this headboard and put it in my daughters room whose off in college. EVERYBODY that sees this headboard LOVES it and are amazed that I, (well with your AWESOME video)...WE, did it!! KEEP EM COMING!
Hoping you'll see this reply since so much time has passed. I'm actually making this now in my basement but I feel I did something wrong or it could be the boards weren't completely flat as I had to add quite a few more nails. I just came up here to take a break & re-watch this vid. I'll go back & flip the board over & pray it doesn't come apart so I can get the legs on...uuuggghhh.
Just bought the wood. $88.08 @ Home Depot. Would have been more, but I have screws. Nice project. Still can't buy an all wood headboard for under $100. UPDATE: I built it the headboard. Very good instructions. In the comments, there were some questions, as to how to mount it. I mounted mine to a steel bed frame. The frame measures 60 1/2" across. The headboard is 62". So I split the difference. I measured in 3/4" from the edge to mount the legs. This way it lines up to the mounting point on the frame. The length of the legs, should also be cut to the height of the mattress. Thanks for a great, simple project !
Alright, let's get the money out of the way. I spent a total of $34.98 on materials. The stain, sandpaper I already had. The boards that were used to trim out the head board were found out behind a loading dock. The rest of the wood and the bolts to attach it to the frame were all that was needed. Now we can move on to the end result. Awesome! The only step I skipped was beating the boards with a pipe. The wood that I found was gouged enough the way it was. This was such a neat project and the video's step by step instructions were spot on for letting me put this together. If I could attach a picture I would. Kudos for helping me out on this one!
@@Atlcst2 Good question! We set up the frame and then aligned the head board to gauge where to drill the holes. Our first set of bolts and washers that we used were way too small and it didn't take long for the headboard to become lose. We maxed out the bolt size by using the biggest ones that would work with the holes in the frame and we haven't had any problems since. BTW - The head board still looks great and we get compliments on it all the time!
Well-organized video starting from beginning w/ supplies needed. Thanks for keeping it to the point, without endless chatter, and for showing process cleary. A helpful, nicely-executed video.
I love their videos. Always easy to follow and give the materials needed. I have done a few of your projects and they are great. As for people complaining about the $20 price tag, maybe check as to the date this was made. Lumber might have been cheaper. Or better yet go and buy yourself a new headboard for a few hundred. So many complainers. Please don't stop making videos.
Late to the game, but I made the queen size version with zero experience and no saw. Had the local lumber yard cut the pieces for me and tacked it together myself. It was more like $75, not $20, but either way, it came out awesome. Thanks!
I just signed a lease to a furnished apartment next to my university. The bed doesn't come with a headboard, so I definitely plan on making this here in a week or two! Headboards, like this one, retail upwards to several hundred dollars, so this saves so much money with a tight college budget!
Building it now...totally wish we looked at the comments first because the materials cost around $80 but its something my husband and I are building together, so we'll be proud of something like this. Thanks y'all!
i made this a few weeks ago for my spare bedroom and stained it an antique grey. It was my first time ever building anything and it turned out great. I used it for a full size bed and missed seeing the adjustments for different bed sizes. It fits just outside the frame so we just added some wood at the bottom to bolt it to.
Ran a bit away with this headboard. Added galvanized piping on cap top of headboard for some character. Might remove to place on upper face of headboard to string lights. As always thank you so very much for sharing your designs!
Looks great! You can take grip-tite nails and bend them in different shapes and tap them into the wood a little bit(laying them down) and it comes out looking like little worm tracks........I think you'll like the effect!
This was great! My dad and I built one today for my full size bed for my college apartment, (a little more expensive, bought our wood at Lowe's) and it took only about 2.5-3 hours to complete. Of course my dad is a handyman/wizard with wood so it was pretty quick and easy. Only thing I would recommend (as per request of my dad) is to add a really strong krazy glue to the wood along with nailing the boards together. It will last a lot longer that way! But amazing video, I love my new rustic headboard!
Used this to make my headboard for my college dorm and i love it! Yes, the price tag was definitely more than 20$ although I didn't search for any other lumber outside of home depot. Thank you so much!!!!
My lumber, from HD cost about $70! However, the price of a retail rustic headboard is ridiculous so this is a steal AND to be able to say you made yourself is priceless. Great instructions.
I followed your instructions, and it came out Beautiful. I was amazed, that it was so simple. Kinda heavy, and I’m not sure how to hook it on the wall.
I built it but it didn't align exactly with my bed frame so seeking another way to anchor . I whitewashed mine with a gray paint, after distressing it with steel wool and vinegar. It looks amazing. The HD near me didn't have 1" x 10" so I used 5-1" x 6" and it did great. Total cost was $76, including paint. HD didn't charge for any of the cuts! Great info.
I found a really quick and easy way to distress boards like these, and you won't end up with what looks like a bunch of intentional marks all over the board, which is what we're all trying to avoid when distressing wood. Lay your boards in your driveway, dump a few handfuls of gravel over them (the more distressed you desire, the more gravel you can use) then just drive your car back and forth over top of the board(s). The gravel will make multiple small to tiny irregular marks and gouges wherever the gravel is laying on the board. You can do a few passes, move the gravel around, and do more passes until you get the amount of distressing you desire. It literally takes a coupe of minutes to get a very distressed look. Now obviously you're probably going to only want to use this with flatter boards, probably nothing thicker than 2 inches, unless of course you own a truck. But keep in mind, if you go much thicker than two inches, you risk the board kicking up and hitting your car as you roll onto or off the edge of the boards. I would love to see some things other people make using this technique. Now where I live here in Arizona, we always have an abundance of gravel since most of us have gravel instead of grass in our yards. Enjoy!
Thank you for the video. The headboard is so simple but looks so nice. Made a full size one for our guest room and soon gonna add the side table from your other video. Keep it up, you guys are great!
Yea so it’s not $20 but the results were awesome and thanks for including additional dimensions. I️ was able to build this start to finish in under two hours. This does not take special tools so anybody can make it! Thank you!
You guys are Awesome, I Love all of your ideas and I Love the Rustic look. Thanks for your ideas, they are great for budget conscience folks who love rustic.
OMG you guys are awesome! we have to move to a different state for work purposes and just the thought of moving everything is overwhelming. your videos give me such inspiration to just built a new dinner table and bench and island and shelves and head boards for our beds. love love love your videos! Thank you so much!!! I'm about to buil my first own headbord!!! It cost me around 75 $ here( since the wood is more expensive ...maybe my fault, a took cheap pine?) Hope it's going to turn as nice as your!-Marie from Montréal-
What’s nice about this tutorial is that you show people the you can make one without any fancy tools. Thank you. The only one suggestion I would do is to use wood glue when attaching the 1x4 around the edge and the top shelf as well. It would just help it to stay together better. Also, a warning to newbies....take care when nailing that the nails don’t go through and you nail it to your floor! Oops!
I would love if you guys could do a tutorial for a night stand. Nothing fancy, I just really like your tutorials and I would love to make my whole bedroom set eventually.
looks nice, you inspired me to make this type of head board along with a few other projects, ty, I would like to see you make an arts and craft style fireplace surround, the simplicity look seems that fits right into your style look forward to it, oh yeah, voices would be fun and that little pup steals the show every time,
I am by far NOT a professional carpenter but am learning to make useful things. Your channel is a big help. The projects both of you build are GREAT, including the dog. Could you build the complete bed showing the rails and everything needed in the near future? Dressers and a simple armoire would be fantastic, too. Thank you.
I am in the process of making this for my new house and it is super easy! The only thing I will say is to get all the needed materials it was about $75-80 and I live in Ohio for reference and went to Home Depot. Also, PLEASE NOTE: YOU WILL NEED 4 1” by 4” by 8 ft pieces to complete this, not 3
Some have commented its more than $20 and that was true for me, but it depends how much diy stuff you do. The wood and 1 pint of stain I bought to make a king size version of this was only $46 at Menards. So not bad. However, i have misc screws, nails, tools, etc... already. It was pretty simple and looks decent. I'm interested in making the rustic side tables to go with it. So I will get more use out of the stain.
You should use a pre-stain on any cheap wood like pine to open the pores and help create a more uniform look (IMO). That being said, nice simple design. Well-paced instructions, too.
I just looked up the lumber prices at my local Menards store and it is 23.42 + tax. That is using standard 1x boards not select or premium but premium 2x4's. I already have the rest of the stuff but it would only be about 10 bucks more if I didn't. You could greatly increase the lumber cost by using select or premium 1x's but whats the point when you want a rustic end result, I think the video is excellent, thank you!!
How about a DIY on a table that morphs from coffee table to diningroom table. My parents has one when I was little and I loved it!!! This would be great in my small NYC appt
This is a good video to show how a headboard is made but there are some things missing. If you want the wood to look really rustic you should use reclaimed wood and wood pallets are great for this. They're free. Simply hitting the wood with a hammer isn't the way to 'distress' wood. I use various items for this but it's just a personal preference. There is no mention of how the frame will attach to the bed frame unless it is simply being held against the wall by the mattress. This doesn't seem like such a good idea in my opinion. I would position the metal bed frame up to the headboard, mark the spots, drill holes then use bolts to hold the headboard to the frame. I also would make a foot board too but again, personal preference. Oh and I would like to know where you can buy all of these materials for $20.00. The stain alone is almost $7.00 at Home Depot. I'm going to say this headboard can be built for maybe $50.00. Wood, nails, sand paper, stain, gas, hammer if you don't own one, measuring tape if you don't own one.
Love this. Great video to folow for my first project. I also added another 2 x 4 support piece to the back. I bought Mocha stain and diluted it for some boards and added water right onto some boards to get several different colors on the headboard.
I made this for my cal king adjusted the measurement because I wanted a bigger one and added lighting the whole this did cost quite a bit but the outcome is amazing! love your tutorials can u guys do a storage bench for the end of a bed?
I just made my KING size headboard and my 10 and 8 year old helped!. I did pay $47(menards as well) which still wasn't bad. May i ask why you didn't seal the wood when finished?
loved the project. however my lumber cost about 60$ the 1x10's were 11$ per piece.. other than that it worked out great. Home Depot needs to drop their prices. lol
I am in the process of making this and either you used 1x8s or your measurements for the smaller pieces are different in the queens size because they're about 3 inches off
My Wood cost $25.06. It took a little bit to cut the wood and nail it but hey I got the "weathered" look by having it rain right after I got the first coat of stain on it. I also decided to make it 48" high and put a middle 1x4 piece for extra support of the back boards. I am looking at what my next project will be, maybe a table!
I made this headboard 5 years ago. Still using it. It looks amazing I get lots of compliments and sent several people to this link. Thank you!!!!

The description section has been updated with lumber dimensions for alternative bed sizes: Twin, Full, King, California King!
+The Rehab Life can you please let me know how did you attach the headboard to the wall? is it just the mattress that is holding it up?
On the vid you kinda miscounted the amount for the 1x4. There should be 4 1x4 right? Not 3 1x4
No its correct. you'd have 3 96" boards, when cut to length all 3 give you plenty left over to cut the 20-3/4 pieces.
+squatchin77 yea I figured that out when I just did the project. Thanks anyway.

Beautiful. I was amazed, that it was so simple. Kinda heavy, and I’m not sure how to hook it on the wall.
On longer boards I'd recommend a 1x or 2x vertical backing board about mid-way down the back to prevent warping of the middle board

Now where I live here in Arizona, we always have an abundance of gravel since most of us have gravel instead of grass in our yards. Enjoy!
With pine, you can always benefit from using a wood conditioner prior to staining to ensure a more even appearance.

It was pretty simple and looks decent. I'm interested in making the rustic side tables to go with it. So I will get more use out of the stain.
Beautiful and the headboard too. 👍☺
For distressing, a tow chain works well also.
Just got the lumber to build this for my wife's birthday coming up this weekend :)
This is awesome...just loved it...kindly upload some nightstand video as well (y)
How about a DIY on a table that morphs from coffee table to diningroom table. My parents has one when I was little and I loved it!!! This would be great in my small NYC appt
Props for your creativeness and craftsmanship. You're kinda cute too.
This is great!! Please keep up the videos they have so much information!!
+HEALTHY_HAPPY_LAURA Thank you, much appreciated!
Wood pallets are usually chemically treated. You dont want to be sleeping near that.
Thanks for this! My headboard came out Great!
Olá ! Sou brasileiro e acompanho seus vídeos sempre. Sou apaixonado por marcenaria.Parabéns pelos belos trabalhos!
Look forward to what you guys will post next
Gorgeous! And easy! Great job
Thank you!
loved the project. however my lumber cost about 60$ the 1x10's were 11$ per piece.. other than that it worked out great. Home Depot needs to drop their prices. lol
Home Depot is the cheapest I can find so far. Lowe's was crazy expensive.
indeed
Or they could just be realistic with their video titles, seems unfair to their viewers..
Cudda Brown go to menards if you have one near you, they are the best
John Rodack don't have that here. Thanks anyway
I am in the process of making this and either you used 1x8s or your measurements for the smaller pieces are different in the queens size because they're about 3 inches off
How do you mount this to the wall or bed to keep it from falling over on you?
Great super simple build. Keep 'em coming
I like it when you show the exact materials you use. Do you state the kind of wood you use? I will be making one of these. Thanks!
Love it!!! How did you attach it to the bed frame?
My Wood cost $25.06. It took a little bit to cut the wood and nail it but hey I got the "weathered" look by having it rain right after I got the first coat of stain on it. I also decided to make it 48" high and put a middle 1x4 piece for extra support of the back boards.
I am looking at what my next project will be, maybe a table!
Love this idea going to try it.Thanks
