I once heard someone say, “if you don’t feel nervous when giving a price quote, then you’re underselling yourself.” It might not be true all the time, but it’s good advice.
Client: "So, how much do you charge for video?" Me: "Check the label maker." Label maker: "What's your budget?" The most important question i've learned since starting making videos....
I don't know man... A lot of time they'll shoot a random low price just to see how it goes. What i found work is to ask them what they're expecting to assess if they want/can afford a big production or a dslr one with their friends as "actors"
I'm going through some of this now. I always panic when someone says I'm charging too much. But at the same time, I need to get my rates up to pay off new equipment. Then when you are trying to up production value by bringing along more crew members for production and planning, it can be hard to translate how it will benefit the end product to the client. It's a lot to take on and can be a tough ballance. Thanks for the video Potato😊
Oh yes, the contract thing! Good advice. I had a client (18 years ago) who put a family member in charge of a project half way through it, when he went on vacation. It was her first time working (no high school job, nothing). Our timing was super tight. I immediately realized she was going to sink the ship, and there was no one else to work with. After the third day of her MIA (shoe shopping), I gathered all the assets they'd need to give the project to someone else. I invoiced for what work I had done for them, and moved on. It took me a year to get my money, but a collection agency was involved. I really liked your voiced over sequence there Gene 😂.
HOOK IT UP MR. POTATO!!!!! Would love to do a comparison between the Osmo Action and the GoPro 7. Common, you know you want to hook it up for a fellow SoCal resident. Thanks for the vid. 🤘💪👍👌🤑 Travel More! Worry Less!.
I feel like every filmmaker starts out as a "do it all on ur own" time person. I still am and I'm rlly trying to let go of it. I want to film and be the director. I want to edit and just do everything and once u try it. U realize how Impossible It is to direct (the talents) and film at the same time and get a good result too.
I'm currently getting into wedding videography and it's so hard to determine what a fair price is for the area! Its discouraging when people ask if you can do it cheaper or try to negotiate when you already feel like you're giving them a deal.
Potato Jet, you are one of the best (and funniest)! Love your channel and always look forward to latest ones. This week's video is a keeper. The advice given is a great boost of confidence and it is always nice to see other people helping each other with progress.
Hi Potato Jet. Watching this in the beginning of the year 2021. After acquiring few photo and video equipment for the last 6 months, and practicing with friends and family, I decided to quit my day job and go full time. I am aware of the risk but I could no longer delay my passion. Thank you so much for your videos. I am learning a lot about this job. More power to you....
dammed time zones....... I love when you share your mistakes. nothing better for someone to learn other than from his or others mistakes. Thanks for the FVRR link I'm just learning that if you don't put a price on your product, no one takes you serious. But without expirience, you need the job..... what to do.

Anyway To Anyone That’s Reading This Is And Probably Having A Bad Day & Feels Like Giving Up On Whatever He/She Is Trying To Accomplish I Just Want To Say Is Just Stay Focus & Never Give Up. Your Blessings Is On Its Way Have Faith & Continue To Be Great 🙏🏾❤️ This not for the osmo action BUT I wold Love for that😍😍😍
Hello potato jet.. i’ve learned so much things on your vlog most especially your reviews, camera tricks, photography hacks and your lovelife 🤘 kudos and godbless. Greetings from Al khobar Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦🇸🇦🇸🇦
Fiverr sucks because you compete against a global market and an indian graphic designer is way cheaper than someone in the US because he has a way lower living standard but can deliver same quality.
I love your videos. But what I like more is your personality. You make me laugh, and that's a good thing. And I'm not trying to suck up to get some-em. This comes from true feelings. I'm working on blogging and you inspire me to just be me and just do me and not fake it. So thx you!
Awesome bit if information, Potato! Us there going to be a follow up on this video? Feels like there is enough in this for at least another video. Keep the voice overs coming!

i just smiled all the way to the end of this video while watching. the voice over part is dope. i always love your content.
I'd say a good way to progress as a freelancer/company is have a multi-choices offer. I got a first "cheap" one with dslrs + small lighting kit. Then i got a better one and a "pro" one with a team, a cine cam etc. Depending on the client i see which to suggest and explain the differences in the final quality. This way you still have work with low budget clients and can try to push on better quality to progress.
Dear potato jet, can you actually explained how you got to be where you are? Like how you started? Did you go to film school? what kind of equipment did you own at the beginning? what exactly did you offer? how did you go and look for your clients? Like the real rough start?
The last tip was great advice. I always try to be super upfront and deliver a draft, but that confuses 100% of clients. Even if you say "listen, this is a draft. Check if the music is cool. Check if the edit is cool. I need to tweak the colors etc. and will send you the final result.". Clients be like: "Hey, I think the colours look weird.. can you change that please?".
Superb video topic! One thing you should always plan for is a contingency budget. Sometimes if not always... a client will ask for something that wasn't in the original plan or you simply came up with something that will take your project to the next level and it wasn't accounted for. If I had that labeling gadget I would label everything, my car, my kids and my wife, hehehe.
Yes please? Recently looking up on label makers as well, since I usually have them printed at a shop. Love the embossed types but are hard to find locally here :\
i just did my first wedding and afterwards felt like wow, im going to be spending lots more time editing on top of the 8 hours of filming i just did. Idk if my price was right, but I also know everyone has to start somewhere and I am excited for what might come from this. Thanks for sharing!
