The problem with camera gear is once you buy something, it leads to you wanting about fifty other things...
Also RUclips!
This is true with Cars, Computers, Real Estates, Gulfing, ... everything.
It’s literally anything...currently addicted to buying camera gear and tools lol
Thats a fact. I bought a steadicam a while ago... now im getting a gimbal for no reason lmaooo.
Sounds like a relationship with a woman
As he shows us a 1000$ microphone, I'm here debating if I should get a ND filter for my Canon 1300d or a sweatshirt. My bank account is crying
Bharath Raj ND filter lol
Same here but i don't even have a camera 🤣🤣
yeaaaah 1300d gang!
yeah and it's just 1 microphone, for just 1 purpose :) It's a shotgun mic, nice for isolating sound when interviewing some one, but.... for other purposes, where you need more ambient sound, it's not a very good solution :) There are cheaper, probably just as good mics out there. You can start with ROde mics, and if a job demands better quality, just rent mics like this...
Most do that with camera's also...
If you just start out, there is no need for 2500USD tripods and 2500 wireless transmission :)
He showing you pro equipment. Buy it if you're a pro. That is, 1) you use it daily, or 2) you rely of it to make money and it cannot fail. 3) it is required to meet industry standards.
Everyone’s talking about selling LUTS and presets, you out here giving BANGING advice on how to be a pro. THANK YOU POTATO JET.
Stuff I kind of knew about but hadn’t really invested in.
I'm a sound designer and mixer and couldn't agree more with the Sennheiser 416. It's my secret weapon mic. Great as a boom, great on cello, great for VO. Well worth it's $1K price.
that Shure sm7b wants you to be very close to it, love that mic 🎤
He has 3 of them
petition for an ASMR channel where you tickle all kinds of camera gear
This needs to be top comment! Let's go!
3 things are: Shotgun mic, Tripod, wireless monitor.
Thank you! Saved me endless minutes of ADD rambling.....
Grip (Tripods, Stands, Steadicam, Jibs), Audio (Microphones, Pre-Amps, Mixers, Recorders), and Storage (Yes, RAID Arrays and HDD's) are my top 3 investments. Glass and cameras are easily interchangeable based on job, but quality Grip, Audio, and Storage will always be helpful.
All of your projects have to be stored somewhere, so that's why storage is essential for me.
Wow.. you've lost some weights Russel!
Probably from carrying that gear!
I thought so too, but wasn't sure
I was about to like ur comment, but I saw you had 100 likes so I’ll let you embrace that.
Hot potato
I'm from Germany. In real, I'm the right potato!

FlyingEyes Na klar!

@@FlyingEyes27 I'm from Norway.
Thanks potato, another video that makes my (current) wallet sad.
lol I know right I looked up all the gear and just sat my happy ass down and tried not to cry
In my opinion, the wireless system is overkill for indie and low-budget film makers. The third best investment after the tripod and boom mic is lighting; you can't do much without enough light. Bonus investment: a good PC that can edit 4K footage smoothly and complete other tasks like graphic design, VFX, animation, audio editing, music production etc.
Yes, i guess what video software to use for that.
Lisergiko agreed!
agreed
adobe premiere pro is very good
I don't even watch these videos because of the topics.
I watch them because it's Potato Jet
Fabian me too 😂
Every new Potato Jet video is like Christmas for me!
Where did you get the orange backdrop from is that just orange paper?
Yes it is just a large roll of orange paper
They are paper backdrops, You can search for seamless paper backdrop on amazon :)
I loved my MKH 815 mic. It still works 50 years later. I often sneaked it into my gear. "You won't need that! The 415/6 will be fine!" But the number of times I used it anyway and people said, "I love that sound!" The only problem was you needed to point it really accurately!
Can you do a similair video, but then with some lower budget items?
The problem with lower budget items is most of them will be dated in a few years or just won't stand the test of time. All of the items he showed could theoretically work for over 10+ years if taken care of. They also could actially be brought to a professional set and wouldn't be laughed off....most budget things would be.
For the fluid head, take a look at the Manfrotto 500 series, particularly the 504HD and the 502. Not as good as the Sachtler, which is pretty much industry standard, but manfrotto makes decent heads. You can usually find kits with matched sticks, but if you don’t go that route, make sure you’re getting a 75mm bowl set up-it will save a lot of time and aggravation leveling the camera. That’s more in the 500-700 range.
Cheaper than that? There’s a lot of cheap gear coming out of China these days, but ymmv. I picked up a head and legs from Neewer (on Amazon) when it was on sale for 60 bucks. So far . . . Eh. It doesn’t have a smooth start on the pan, but what do you want for $60? I’ve had it less than 6 months and I can’t speak to its durability.
I was going to suggest similar. Could do different price brackets too.
Matt Jones
I agree, the whole point of the video was the basic equipment where it’s long term smart to spend more money. If you spend the bucks upfront on a good head and sticks or on a good shotgun mic, you won’t need to upgrade it as you upgrade your camera system. If you can’t afford the recommended equipment, you make do, but that isn’t the point of the video. There’s thousands of videos reviewing cheaper equipment.
Yea, especially the tripod shocked me
Always have the opinion that analogue/analog gear are the ones worth investing on. They have a much longer usable lifespan and runway compared to their digital cousins.
The ending 👌🏻
Lol perfection
I was dying
I waited and was not disappointed 😂

watched several of your videos and here is what you get from me! A new subscriber! Love your energy in the videos, keep it up bro!
This is my opinion when it comes to gear: Avoid HDMI, embrace SDI and gear that can handle variable voltage up to 18v power and your accessory gear will last forever. Also pay a sound guy separately ;)
Nice to see how the edits are put together with that timer running on the camera feed. Way to go!
I think another essential tool for investment is lighting! Especially small LEDs that you can bring anywhere.
I need an updated video of this. With more essentials. I’m a gluten for ordering every cheap light, mic, or any gadget, yet I barely go out and film. My channel is live streams but I want to create more. I obsess over gear but never go create. Wasted so much money on gadgets I never use. I wish we could have a simple must have list of things to start creating good content on a budget. Like news, interviews and short documentary stuff. Not cinematic or film making level but still professional looking and for RUclips.
Great choices in stuff.. Satchler tripod is a MUST if you are in this for the long haul, and people often overlook audio... would also add the AVX wireless system from Sennheiser if you do on the go interview work with the incredible MKE2 lav's
i know im randomly asking but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Keith Abel instablaster ;)
@Sonny Brecken Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Sonny Brecken it worked and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my ass :D
@Keith Abel you are welcome xD
It would be really cool if you could do more business related videos of you just doing a basic run down on getting started, laying a foundation, contracts/legal, estimates and treatment. that kind of stuff
THE BEST QUOTE of 2019 = "Shelf life of a fraying iPhone Charger" 4:38
You are doing great! We are all very proud of you.
Great video! I have a Røde NTG-3, you should test that microphone. It's awesome :-)
i have the NTG-1 and i love it!
@Jacob Seppa niceh i got the zoom h6 with the ntg-1 its niceh for simple audio recordings
@Jacob Seppa yeah verry well!
Happy New Year Potato. totally agree, the client experience is HUGE. giving them the experience of being part of the whole production process and not just in it really wins a ton of points. its funny, some clients want to have the behind the scenes footage of them at a production set then the production itself. popular for their gram posts :) also, yeah the tripod is killer but a "good" one is hard to travel on planes with. so hard to compromise on gear for long distance shoots by taking cheaper tripods. anyway. love the new studio and keep that content coming in 2019!
Heyyo POTATO, can you shoot some cinematic video with just a laptop webcam? Well i dare you to do dat. Btw you're mah fav channel on youtube
I replayed that ab scene 5 times and cracked up every single time. Love the vids man.
Imagine giving a client a screen and they say “what about if we do the shot like this?”
This is nice. And true for tripods even if you are just a photographer. I still have the same tripod from 10 years ago. Still works.
Dayum sold me on the tripod. Checked price $2600
Yea that one hurt when I realized that I ain't affording that no matter how bad i want it haha
Every time I log in to watch your channel and read your name I think of a potato flying through the air, but on another note I want one of those tripods and I want some more camera gear, this life is addictive
That's effspot's Blue Jaguar F-Type SVR in the background at @3:00
Shitty situation to be honest because it is kind of showing where he lives.

Hey Potato! We want to listen your opinion about the nikon Z6 in coparison with a high pro camera like a RED or Arri. Your perspective is so clarified because you work ith very high equipment and you show to us an unique perspective. Do it for beginers filmakers! Nice vídeo! 🔥🎬🎥
So, I was just very curious: you seem really focused on videography I, but *how's your photography?*
Fabian im also interested
But videography is his profession...
He's a cinematographer, not a videographer.
Our teradek is in our top 3 but some other good options. 1. Inovativ cart 2. Easy rig with serene arm. 3. Core nano v mount batteries
2:58 LOL i know this place from the one GTA5 mission with Franklin and Lamar xD
Hey Potato Jet person. I adore your work. It's really educating more about how to take my own videography aspirations to great heights🔥
:) thanks
Didn't know about storing the tripod. Thanks for that tip!
I keep out myself to spend money on camera last 3 month. But I think I gonna lose this game. I need full frame... I fink... YAH... Sorry panasonic.
You really need or you just really really want? Be honest, you’re among friends here. We understand who understand how want can be so strong it seems like a need. We’re gear heads.
If you really need something for a particular project but can’t afford it, consider renting for just that project (and hopefully you can pass the cost on to the client).
Super helpful video! Hadn’t even thought about buying a Teradek until now. Also 10/10 ending
Do they ever go UP in value
🔴Good little tips you got there. Definitely worth investing in something for the long run.
Where's the givaway? I really want that microphone for my m50. Please, I neeed it for the up coming trip.

I almost spilled my coffee when he said "2nd is a RED camera", but lol-ed on its shelf life being like a "freyed iPhone cable" which is freaking true.
I'd rather choose Arri ones. They're expensive than RED, but in terms of reliability and their honest service (remember their lie about red cartridges being "special"), it pays itself. Though honestly either option will still burn a hole in an already burnt wallet haha

Generally, Audio equipment will hold its use for a long time. I have the Sennheiser 416 also and it is just legendary. To companion that I would just shout the Sanhken Cos11 Lav mic. It is just a great symbiosis of the Sennheiser 416. Usually, kan matches the tonal sound. They cut great together. (I also love my Zoom F8, that you also have)
I just love my Kesler Crane Kwik Release Reciever and just a bunch of different dovetail baseplates - even if there are slight differences in the baseplate brands the Kwik release can be adjusted. All my cameras are adapted to use dovetails baseplates.
Monopod I have used for almost 8 years. Mine is an old Manfrotto which is heavy but would upgrade to a Sirui -when ... if my Manfrotto ever breaks.
Super Grip clamps - just love them!...
Fuck Y**! Keep that coming! Awesome one ;)
TOP 3 TIPS THAT ANY FILMMAKER WILL NEED: 1. ORIGINALITY 2. IMAGINATION 3. PERSEVERANCE. You’re welcome.
Strange. Only about 1 camera every 5 years interests me (assuming I have to spend my own money on them). In the past decade, only RED and Blackmagic. And I'm still trying to find one lens every 20 years that's good enough to interest me. Maybe one gimbal every 5 or 10 years. This poor dude is too easy to please! Sad.
Hey man do you have a video on the best bang for the buck camera monitors? And what would be your best recommendation for a compact monitor i can put over my camera just for flogging..?
