Great video looking forward to part 2. Would really love to see an analogous video to the one from 2 months ago where you compared beam patterns from every MM modifier. Would love to see back to backs with a 42" softbox and also the changes from different reflector extensions, different grid stacks etc.
So after watching the video do you breaking down the difference between MagMod’s modifiers, I was convinced that the 24 octa was a huge step up from from the mag sphere. I don’t understand the need for this product. Like if you’re bringing a strobe with you, you’re toting a 4+ pound strobe and a light stand of some kind the difference between a soft box and this mag sphere doesn’t really seem to make much of a difference to me in terms of weight, where it will absolutely make a difference in light quality. Am I missing something here? Please help me understand.
Glad I held out for this! Been wanting to integrate to Magmod modifiers for a while but I was looking for something studio friendly. Love my Ad600's...hate putting gels on them. Also, I love I can just put my 200s in a Mag Ring and use this as well. Take my money!
I already bought mine (it arrived an hour ago). The biggest suggestion I would have is demonstrate how this modifier may work on a group of people using a 600 watt strobe. As a wedding photographer I have to use the 600 watt when shooting family photos, but I absolutely hate mounting and umbrellas or modifiers on my lights because they effectively turn into "kites" even with a small breeze. Then I have to contend with harsh light on oily skin in post which is a pain. I am hoping this new XL will reduce the harsh light on oily skin while eliminating the kite effect in small breezes. I think a video demonstrating that would be useful to people as most of the videos I see are either on couples or single people which is a less real use practicality to me as with couples and single person uses one AD200 (with Magmod diffuser of course) is more than enough power for me. Anyway look forward to part 2, hope you include some group shots with a morel light source in it.
why a 600 ? i shoot 200 i’m a wedding photographer!! we do family #portraits evenly lit sell that giant turd lol i did ad200 and V1s our go to lights !! !! i’ll never carry those giant monster run and gun baby
I ordered the XL a while ago and am waiting for it to arrive. one question: is it possible to use the gel filter for the XL with a softbox other than the magbox? I haven't checked the diameter in detail, but I would like to be able to attach it to the APUTURE lighttdome II (bowsens mount) for example. I'm thinking that it might look like that, but what do you think? Is it impossible due to the hooking part? I am also ordering a MAGBOX42 at the same time, and I am thinking of giving my Aputure LIghtdome II to someone else. the Aputure lightdome also has a gel holder, but the Magbox would allow me to use the same filters as the XL, and it also looks easy to install.
great video. waiting for godox mount for ad100pro and ad300pro. I voted for it 🙂 about godox V1 round head 7.5cm diameter, a nightmare to extend the 4.5x4cm rubber to fit. It is so strong, especially in direction perpendicular to magnet axis, compared to the one we see in magmod old advertisement. Once extended in one direction, the other one shrinks and hours sweating to stretch other direction with fingers (hurt a lot). waiting for a maggrip V3 for round head (and ad200pro big head)
Been asking that myself! Obviously it would fit on the mount, but given they never seem to promote it for video, I wonder if the plastic/rubber components aren't a good fit for continuous given the heat issue.
Thanks for asking. We have a page on our FAQ's addressing that. Here is a link to it. support.magnetmod.com/mag-mod-xl/monolights-strobes-video-lights-compatible-with-the-reflector-xl - There are certain video lights that it works great on. We've found that it usually is the video lights that have built-in exhaust fans. Check out that link or the support page which will be the best place to see which lights we feel that it is most compatible with. The section about Video Lights specifically is at the bottom of that page.
thanks for the review! I knew you would love it since you often use MagMod. My question is I was wondering if you can attach the XL MagBoob (what my friends and I call it) directly to the reflector without using a grid?
Yes you can! The MagGrid XL isn't a required modifier. The beauty of our magnetic, modular system is you can mix and match to configure the right light-shaping for your needs!
On the MagMod website this kit has a reflector XL that is designed for Bowen's mount strobes. Pye says in the video that it can come in any mount you want?
Thank you for the review, Pye! I already have the flash kits, but I was wondering why, if you purchase the Two Strobe XL Bundle, they give you 2 reflectors but only one sphere? It's expensive enough already and they're going to make you purchase an extra sphere separately. I'm not expecting you to answer that (unless you know the answer-lol), I'm just venting about it. Anyway, I love your reviews - they're the best. You always break things down so that even a guy like myself can follow along-lol. I appreciate that. I can't wait to watch you put it to use. Also, are the gels only to be used with the MagBox? Thx in advance.
We appreciate your question and understand where you’re coming from. When we were crafting this offer, we aimed to strike a balance by providing a discount on a combination that we felt would appeal to photographers, especially based on our extensive testing. Instead of an extra MagSphere XL, we believed that including gels would enable photographers to creatively use color in their shots. Our goal was to create a versatile kit that would satisfy most needs at a discounted rate, while also offering a la carte options to fill in any gaps. We hope this provides clarity on our decision-making process. Thanks so much for your support!
@@MagnetMod Thank you for answering that for me. Would you be able to tell me if the gels are only to be used in the MagBox or can they be used in other ways? Thanks in advance.
Hello MagMod! How can I be a MagMod ambassador in my country? I use MagMod for a long time on my latest portraits and I love the result. I'm from Bolivia.
Hi Daniel, thank you for expressing interest in becoming an ambassador. We receive numerous requests, and our primary source for identifying potential ambassadors is within our MagMod Community. We take great pleasure in discovering photographers who actively share photos and insights on how they utilize MagMod in their work. If you're not already a member, we encourage you to join us and start showcasing your talents with MagMod.
Great Video!! can you do a Magmod XL vs Softbox comparison please! Thank you!
Great suggestion!
Mine is coming tomorrow. So, excited. Can't wait to see Pye's part 2 of the introduction.

We're so excited to unbox ours tomorrow!!!
Awesome! We can't wait to see what you create. Thank you!!!!
Going to send this video over to my wife so she can get rid of all her LV and Gucci bags!!
I bet she will be on board. Let us know how it shakes out. :)

On how it works? As in like how it mounts to a larger strobe like an AD600pro? All you need is the handy dandy magring and boom, you're done.

It's not a complete MagMod video by Pye Jirsa without the giddiness of the magnet sound. :)

thank you for this
Can't wait to pick this up for my AD300
Just be sure to get a SL-2 or other Bowen's adapter, since there's sadly still no love from MagMod for the Godox mount :(

I was always told the larger the light source the softer the light. This seems like going backwards. Why not just use a lantern modifier.
I bought 6 of them w/ 2 cases (they hold 3 collapsed pretty well) to use when I strobe Equestrian arenas!
Wow that's amazing! Thanks for the support

I note that the magsphere in your video is not pointed directly at the model. Do you recommend "feathering" the magsphere in all lighting situations?

We have a Profoto mount that can be ordered separately but it comes in the box with a Bowen's mount.
I do not have Bowens/Pro Photo or Godox connections/flash units and want to attach the XL reflector directly to the Magring2, is that possible?
Sadly it doesn't work that way. The size of the base is just too small for an adaptor to fit on the MagRing.
Can this be used with led lights?

The fact they skipped professional photographers using Broncolor gear was embarrassing.
I have a Broncolor 800 and no gel modification
The concepts and quality of MagMod products are great, and I own a bunch of their products. But they're seriously overpriced. Seriously.
The whole contraption is too big, awkward, and clumsy when attached to your strobe.
