Hi Jof. It's very interesting following this story. I too had damp in my 2021 690G. Inside the storage box under the single seat. Chelston contacted Burstner in Germany, and even though I bought the van privately (through Motorhome Depot), they honoured the warranty. Chelston agreed to carry out a damp check/ HAB even though it was past the expiry date. (because they were so busy at the time) NB this led to the damp being discovered in 2023. So, like you were quoted, I waited 12 months to get the work done. 43% damp at the time. I was concerned about it spreading so over winter i kept the lid open and had regular heating on a timer. Fast forward, 2024, repair completed ( water ingress was via the amber side light) no cost to repair ( thanks Cheryl) and the damp warranty remains intact. I did, however, get them to do the 2024 HAB and damp check at the same time (mentioned previously!). My view is, proceed with caution and ask lots of questions! No one ever wants to spend more than they have to. Excellent channel BTW, you provide so much great advice. 10/10 !!
I think there are probably numerous unscrupulous motorhome dealers taking financial advantage of customers who know little or nothing about their motorhomes when it comes to habitation checks. Knowledge is power and knowing at least a little about the various systems would be advantageous when dealing with these people, as you say a damp meter is a good investment. If you have got damp in the wall it won’t dry out unless you remove the vinyl wall covering and ventilate the area, we had a similar issue with our Coachman caravan, it was the wall roof join leaking in our case, left unchecked it will get worse and rot the plywood. Good luck, we really enjoy your adventures 👍🍻
I was having some upgrades done by a big motorhome service centre, I was told my bathroom had 100% damp and the wooden frame was rotten away , it’s a ixeo so no wood in it’s construction, first lie from them , I always check my own motorhome with a protimeter Aquant , when I asked to see there meter readings funny enough the guy who operated there protimeter was on holiday, second lie anyone can operate a moisture meter , they said to fix the invisible damage was thousands, I asked to see the rotten wood to which they couldn’t find , because there was none, I think personally lots of motorhome dealers are falsely claiming damp for financial gain !!! This happened over 2 years ago and I’ve never had any problems since , what’s scary is I am switched on as I own a restoration company, others aren’t and panic at the word damp and the industry knows this .
This time last year at our hab check dealer found damp in the garage above the mains socket (690G). The same day they found the external mains socket had no foam gasket or sealant since new. They sealed up so will see how it is next week. Our previous Swift had damp and the usual runaround from a dealer because they get paid a fixed fee or very low hourly rate which meant they would be out of pocket. If you look at an average annual cost of the hab service say £300 which over five years gives you a decent sum to fix any issues. Btw saying wait till Aug 2025 to get Burstner claims fixed means they want you to pay, go away, or buy a new van from them.
Very informative 👍. Any pointers on where to get the extra seal for the garage doors? Not sure if you did a video for that. Unfortunately the previous owners of ours didn’t have the first Burstner hab check done so the water ingress guarantee won’t be honoured 🤦♂️.

Wether the dealers are making up faults to create work is a general occurrence I can't comment and have not experienced this over the last nearly twenty years of motorhoming. We found water in the garage in our TD744 whilst in France over last Christmas. The van was already booked in for service to maintain the Burstner warranty at the end of January where the dealer found the rear wall was indeed leaking. Burstner Ok'd the remedial work within 24 hours and the work was carried out satisfactorily just after Easter at no cost to us at all and the cambelt was replaced during the visit for just under sixty percent of the menu pricing. I'm very happy with the Burstner main dealer, yes they are expensive but the facilities and services offered are first class and this does come at a cost.
Jof, I had my mother on my car the other day, I received as always a video with the comments, like brake discs in good order, sufficient level on brake pads, tyre depth measured, condition of tyres, exhaust system, etc. So why don’t dealerships do this when doing an habitation check, so you have a visual reference. I had received mine by text and email before I got the car back at the dealership.
Watched your video this morning ,I could see the disappointment in your face at being let down or not told the truth.i have a Motorhome just over 2 years old,and the amount of times I’ve had problems. The stress and inconvenience but the dealerships Most of them take your money and there’s a problem it’s like chucking poker dice to get a honest response .love watching you 👏👏👏👍
Hi Jof I got a Protimeter survey master for work we got a damp-proofing company. I’ve got a spare one you can have m8 I’ll put it in the van you can have it when I see you 👍
If I was a checker I would put a bright coloured dot sticker in the vicinity of the damp or issue. What you describe seems to be a cash cow for the dealership by billing the warranty claim.
Interesting. Normally dealers don’t like warranty work as they do not always get paid the full hourly rate. What if you want to sell the MH in between now and next August. Who will want a van with a damp claim pending?
The claims for damp on new motorhomes including permium models over the last 5 years are at an epidemic levels unfortunately, due to the cost savings implemented in place of profit!! 😪
June 2023, water ingress scored @ 50% in the offside garage door! Thankfully it’s under warranty so new door ordered. Still awaiting new door to arrive, June 2024 habitation check, report states offside garage door reading 6% ? New garage door finally fitted August 2024, 14 months later! Like you and majority of owners get home and analyse the paperwork and compare to previous years! And then worry…
Sorry to say its all well and good having a warranty like us but our dealer as tried three time over 4years and still can't fix it, plus they are the top Burstner repairer. Good luck buy a good quality damp meter and check yourself after the repair.
We have a 3 year old Fiat Ducato Carado V337 (Carado is part of the Hymer group). At our year 2 hab check there was a reading of 30 on the near side cab roof where the cab joins the hab area. Our dealer explained where it was coming from and told us the reading (30) and at the same time over sealed the area and asked us to come back around three to four months later in the autumn and after plenty of rainfall to see if it had improved. When we went back a few months later it had improved to around half that figure and at this years check it stayed the same and we feel pretty reassured . We received a report which shows every area checked and the number alongside each area. Did you get a report to show the exact area and the damp reading number Jof?
Thanks for the information Bridget, glad things have improved, such a worry being such a new van. We had an area report, but we are going to monitor ourselves, thinking this is the way forward.🚍🏨🧐
The dealers don’t seem great , my dealer said they found a little damp and said it was probably coming in on the cab / roof seal but it’s marginal so don’t worry about it they said , by the way your warranty is void as the hab check wasn’t done during Covid so I would not bother with a hab check going forward ( ixeo 680g )
@@MOHOTELADVENTURES I am absolutely anal about my MH like yourself and will continue to look after and maintain it my self , I don’t trust the dealers one bit .
Damp seems to be a big problem here. Perhaps all new mohos should come with a damp report from new so owners have a base level against which to compare later reports.
Don’t spend too much on a damp meter, all your needing to see is variations in readings around your motorhome that indicate if you have a problem or not!! I check around mine every couple of months and keep a record of readings on a check sheet you can get off the internet. It’s a shame Burstner won’t accept independent habcheck results carried out by an NCC accredited engineer.
I really wouldn't be too concerned as I'd expect your motorhome is wood free construction so there is a limit to how much damage can be done .You seem to be a practical chap so a diy solution very possible (take apart, clean, refix, seal). The customer support and service in this sector is a complete joke so fortunately you can use this platform to highlight your experience. We had a brand new Autotrail.Major issues with damp every year and in the same places repairs were carried out.Industry is a joke hense part of the driver for the increase in diy conversions.
