@@VloggingThroughHistory If you're looking for more female creators to feature, I would recommend History's Forgotten People. They have a lot of biographies on queens and mistresses and how they influenced their SOs. They also feature men who are often overshadowed by more famous contemporaries, like Philip Marlowe or Elizabeth I's spymaster Walsingham

    • @ferea_896
      @ferea_896 9 дней назад +1

@@juliakovacs4885 Walsingham was not overshadowed. He is incredible well known by everyone who is familiar with Elizabethan history , his story incredible well documented since birth, his relationship with religion and how it impacts the man he becomes, his frustrations with Elizabeth and how they actually didn’t get along, his role in stopping several conspiracies, the Queen of Scots plot and his role in lobbying for her execution . There were more famous man at the time of course but that’s by design. If you are a famous spy in your day either you’re dead or terrible at your job, he wasn’t either, and today he is incredibly well known and it’s impossible to study the Elizabethan era and her reign without talking about him

A fact related to 18:40. Elizabeth II's cousin George Lascelles (later Lord Harwood) was a prisoner of war at Colditz Castle. He was considered very imporant as the nephew of King George VI (his sister's son) so wasn't executed immediately since they thought they could use him as bargaining tool.
When the war turned against Germany, Hitler did sign his death warrant - and of others at Colditz - but a general overseeing the prisoners of war refused to carry out the order since the war was, in his eyes, lost. Instead Lascelles was released to the Swiss.

The King of Norway - Haakon VII and the King of Denmark - Christian X - were brothers and were kings of their respective realms when Nazi Germany invaded both countries in 1940. This is why incidentally both Norway and Denmark - which were occupied for most of the war - became founding member-states of NATO in 1949.

It’s an informational video made by the war department to educate their troops on who they’re fighting with and against and it’s a really interesting insight into how 40’s America viewed Britain and in some ways how little Britain has changed and how much Britain has changed in other ways.

On the note of the Greek royal family, every king of Greece after 1863 until the definitive abolition of the monarchy in 1974 was a member of the Danish-German Glucksburg dynasty. This Royal house officially still rules Denmark and Norway and technically the UK under Charles III, through his father Prince Philip. So when people talk of a “Greek royal family,” it’s technically more Danish than ethnically Greek.

Wilhelm II is actually not buried in a tomb, his coffin rests on a plinth in the private chapel at huis Doorn (the manor he bought for his own use in the Netherlands in exile) and, as per his own instructions and will only be buried, in Germany, when the monarchy has been restored there.

I'm gonna share this historical fact since I feel not many know this. After a chaotic century in the kingdom of Abbisinya, Kassa Hailu managed to end all the chaos of the Era of Princes. In 1855 he took the throne and became emperor Tewodros ll. He pretty much started modernizing the country but was hated by the nobels because he took their money and gave it to the less fortunate. After a series of bad decisions he was defeated in the battle of Magdala in 1868. He sent his son and wife to England before taking his own life. His wife Tiruwork died en route in 1868. His son Alemayehu Tewodros made it and was brought to queen Victoria who grew fond of the boy. Alemayehu's life in England was a depressing one as he longed to return to his homeland. He died in 1879 at the age of 18. He's the only non British royal to be buried at the St George Chapel at Winsdor Castle.

Hello from Costa Rica! Man! I'm so addicted to your content right now. Here's something interesting I wanted to comment. Back in 1856 we fought and won a war against some filibusters from USA, and that war is kinda related to the American Civil War because this guy William Walker who was the ruler of Nicaragua, wanted to create a slave colony in Central America, and to that end invaded Costa Rica, but they were repulsed. This war was extended to 1857 and at one point this guy Walker invited PGT Beauregard to join him but Beauregard declined. Pretty Interesting story preceeding the Civil War.

The Royal families and most of the nobility are indeed related and one thing that is often overlooked is that it's the women who often tied them together. A ruler would keep his hier close to replace him, and usually his spares were his 2nd layer of support. It was the daughters who were sent out to marry and build bonds and connections. Treaties were often sealed by sending a daughter for marriage.
Daughters were iften viewed as disappointments, but the fact is that they were VERY important if you wanted to build your dynasty.

Allies are all for self determination unless you decide against them is a relatively true statement. In the case of Greece, it was self determination they were supporting. Constantine was known for regularly ignoring public sentiment.
He was notorious for heavily involving himself in politics, despite being the head of a constitutional monarchy. His decision to keep Greece out of the war was due to personal connections, and most greeks at the time considered it illegal, since Greece had signed a mutual defence treaty with Serbia.
He regularly batted heads with the greek Prime Minister, Eleftherios Venizelos. Venizelos won the 1916 election publicly promising Greece would join the war on the side of Serbia. When Constantine refused to sign the decision, Venizelos resigned and new elections were declared. He won again. The King ignored the outcome and refused to sign the decision again. Venizelos resigned a second time.
He then left Athens and went to Salonika, where he declared an open revolt against the king, and the birth of a new nation that would go to war against the Central Powers, and asked the Allies for support. It was only after the English and French blockaded and bombarded the port of Piraeus, thus starving Athens out, that Constantine agreed to abdicate in favour of Prince Alexander.

4:33 I unironically considered Alexandrina as a name for my daughter for a hot second but, while beautiful, it just seemed like too much name to saddle her with.

Arthur Zimmerman gets a lot of flak for sending the worse email of all time but he is also responsible for approving sending Lenin to Russia. So he had his ups and downs. Unfortunately, history has only remembered his telegram and not the role he played in knocking Russia out of the war.

Not only is Prince Philip a blood relative of Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna but he was also a blood relative of Tsar Nicholas II. Prince Philip’s father Andrew was the brother of King Constantine I of Greece and their father George I of Greece was the brother of Queen Alexandra and Maria Feodorovna (Dagmar of Denmark) so this meant that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip shared both Queen Victoria and Christian IX of Denmark as Gt Grandparents 😮

Mary of Teck did like to put people in the position of handing high end things over to her but many of those things had been taken from the various Royal dwellings ( supposedly). If so she was just recovering stolen goods.

There is a story of Mary of Teck being a magpie when is came to Jewelry. As many of the monarchies were collapsing in Europe she would send people out to buy the jewels, but she wouldn't pay for them instead she would insist that the people "donate" or give them to the Royal Collection. She would then breakup the jewelry and have new pieces made and claim them for herself.

Frederick III. didn't became emperor after german unification though. Frederick's father Wilhelm I. ruled until 1888 and was then only briefly followed by Frederick (who died of throat cancer only a few months after); after that came Wilhelm II. Thus, 1888 is known as the "Year of the three Emperors".

King Christian IX of Denmark is interesting just like Victoria. They came to their thrones at around the same time and, I believe were born in the same year. Both were unlikely heirs to the throne. There is a series Called 'The Father-In-Law of Europe' where his descendants tell their family stories and the ones they know about from diaries and letters, and even childhood memories. Queen Margarethe of Denmark (since abdicated in favor of her son) is featured in many of the episodes as are her sisters Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Queen Anne Marie of Greece. King Constantine of Greece tells of his deposition, King Haarkon of Norway his family story etc. Most of Christian's children married into Victoria's family in one way or the other. I highly recommend the series, although the first episode appears to be missing some audio, perhaps 5 mins total. But the stories and the charm of these individuals is amazing. They know the family intimately. The first two episodes center around Christian's daughter Alexandra who would become Queen of England when she married Edward VII, and her sister who would become Tzarina of Russia. I'm not sure if it would be suitable for a reaction, but they are available on RUclips.

Finland ditching its German king wasn't just due to Germany losing WW1, though that was certainly part of it. Finland had just had a civil war between the political Left and the political Right, and the Right had won. In the aftermath, there was a power struggle within the winning side between a moderate conciliatory faction and a hardline faction. The hardline faction went for establishing a monarchy, and not just a figurehead monarchy but one with real power as a safeguard against the Left gaining power through winning parliamentary elections. By the time Germany lost the war, the moderate faction had gained the upper hand, in part because the undemocratic actions of the hardliners were hindering efforts to get international recognition for Finnish independence, which at the time was less than a year old and recognized by few. The combination of the shift towards political moderation along with a German monarch being geopolitically disadvantageous contributed together to burying Finnish monarchism for good.
