      Hey Sammy, it was really cool when you used to piano and showed us the chord/notes used, what are your thoughts doing that more often, or even having a special video, showing us some notes/chords in a few different songs from Mario Kart or games? Actually, would be cool to see you play drums, SammyDrums! Some of these beats sound fun to play on drums!

    Kinda hot take: I think the electric guitar in Dk summit brings an edge to the song, it gives off a “you’re snowboarding and it’s cool as hell” vibe, while the original (which is still an s tier song) only gives off a “you sure are snowboarding” vibe

    24:44 I heard these electric piano fills and I *KNEW* you’d appreciate this! Actually, the entire DS Mario Circuit arrangement for 8DX is something I figured would be up your alley. It’s kind of like how they treated DS Shroom Ridge, they gave it live horns, but kept it synthy.

    The biggest problem with Riverside Park's theme is that the stage is so short, you'll finish a full lap before you're halfway through a loop.

    • @PianistTanooki
      @PianistTanooki Год назад +6

      That’s the thing I’m surprised he missed. He mentioned that it was shared music for both Waluigi Stadium and Wario Colosseum, so the music had to fit both characters. Now, the music was solely recreated for Waluigi Stadium, and they definitely made it goofier to fit Waluigi. (It’s why I didn’t like how DS Waluigi Pinball reused the Wario Stadium music… I don’t think it works as well. That music was created with Wario’s character in mind.)
      Besides which, I think the new arrangement better fits the overall style of Mario Kart: Double Dash.

    • @holdenontomydignity
      @holdenontomydignity Год назад +3

      @@PianistTanooki I agree. Especially the last thing you said. That’s something that they’ve done rly well with the soundtrack in this wave.
      The remixes/remakes of the music from the older games feel true & respectful to the style of the soundtracks OF those games.
      DS Mario circuit feels very true to the original with all the retro sounding synthesizers and record scratches while at the same time, sprucing it up to modern standards and adding nice flairs like the horns.
      Same with DK Summit. Still feels true to the Wii game’s style but with some nice new touches. And like you said, Waluigi stadium very much matches the chaotic zaniness of Double Dash.

    Tour Amsterdam Drift: I like both versions pretty equally, I think of the Irish Drinking Song from Whose Line Is It Anyway
    GBA Riverside Park: So fun, so groovy, one of my favorites
    Wii DK Summit: Crazily enough, I was indifferent to the Original, still indifferent to the 8 version
    Yoshi's Island: As someone who considers the original Yoshi's Island as an almost perfect OST from the SNES era, 8's version is a top 3 for me
    Tour Bangkok Rush: I really enjoy the 8 version, I like the Oboe solo and the Flute solo
    DS Mario Circuit: I really enjoyed the original, I also really enjoy the 8 version, love the rhodes piano, tie for me on which is better
    GCN Waluigi Stadium: I love the groove of the 8 version, not sure how I feel about the loss of the ska feel, as I did like that about the original, missing the organ, but I still like it more than the GCN version
    Tour Singapore Speedway: EDM, I like the 8 version a lot more than the Tour version
    Overall, Wave 3 and 4 were my favorites music wise, GBA Riverside Park was my most listened to song of 2023, but I'd have to say Rock Rock Mountain and Tour London Loop getting the live drums and guitar they always wanted, but the case is also made for SNES Bowser's Castle 3 on that note

    18:42 I always thought that for Bangkok Rush, the music would've been something like Thai instruments like the Ranad, Klui, etc and with some modern instruments on the sides (something like this ruclips.net/video/Mu_jkBd5BSU/видео.html) to give a exotic Southeast Asian sound with vibes of a bright modern city.

    16:03 I mean, I get that the old music was certainly "impressive" because they did so much with very little to work with hardware-wise… however, if a live band can recreate a similar feel, like the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe version of Yoshi's Island did, while embellishing on the tune, I'm going to prefer that.
    NES/SNES music sounded the way it did because it *had* to, not because composers "wanted" it to sound that way. Koji Kondo himself still composes for modern games here and there, and while he does go for the electronic sound every now and then with some of his music in Super Mario Odyssey (like the Torkdrift Battle theme), the rest of his music takes advantage of real instruments. If you read the old Iwata Asks interviews of him reflecting on his composition days from the past, you can tell he was very happy to move on from the limited sound capabilities of the old hardware.
    I hear people who say "live band music doesn't sound like video game music anymore" because it doesn't sound 8-bit or 16-bit, and that's kind of silly to me. This is like saying "Motion pictures don't look like motion pictures anymore because they're not in black and white like the good ol' days."

    • @andymarten
      @andymarten Год назад

      You’re definitely not wrong and I do think overall the evolution from the 8-bit music to what we have today with live orchestra arrangements are like light years better.
      I think with discussions like this though, personal preference and nostalgia plays a role. I think what Sammy was trying to say (and what I took out of it) is that even limitations and imperfections can create the perfect listening experience and bring up those fun, nostalgic moments that a live band can’t really fully replicate. They can come close, but sometimes the live band feel may not quite the same feeling the original score can produce.
      Personally it’s a fascinating discussion. Objectively I think we can agree the evolution of video game music is getting better for gaming experiences and that video game developers can create their full potential with that evolution. But I can see, especially with older gamers how a soundtrack from the old NES, SNES, N64 and others can create that feeling of perfection without truly being perfect. But I can see how a live band makes soundtracks and video game experiences unique and better overall. As it is with everything associated with video games (and with a lot of things) it’s subjective and things hit differently to different people.

    • @PianistTanooki
      @PianistTanooki 9 месяцев назад

      @@andymarten I just saw this now.
      I definitely understand what he's saying and admire his appreciation for how composers worked around the limitations of the hardware back then. And I do agree that some of it holds up, like Yoshi's Island. However, a lot of his takes in other videos tend to have this "the old version is better because it reminds me of my childhood," or "the old music is better because it sounds retro" mindset. It's a very biased, nostalgic take. "Retro" is a relative term that changes with each generation. At one point, "retro" video game music meant music from the 80s, which meant 8-bit chiptunes on the NES. Then "retro" expanded to include the SNES and 16-bit music, and later the Nintendo 64… and then the GameCube, etc.
      We're at the point where a lot of today's teens or young adults grew up with the Wii. For these individuals, "retro" for them is stuff like Super Mario Galaxy… music that is largely performed by a live band/orchestra. For these people who grew up with music that didn't have the same hardware limitations from the 80s and 90s, they're not going to have the same appreciation for NES/SNES/N64 music. These people are going to look at it far more objectively and will more than likely say, "wow, this sounds awful."
      When you remove the nostalgic factor, very few people are actually going to go "Wow, if only Eric Miyashiro could top the sound of Nintendo 64 trumpets… he needs to practice more." Like I said in my original comment, composers wrote the music the way they did on the NES/SNES because that's all the hardware could produce. If given the option to redo their own music, you can bet your ass they'd redo it and make it sound less "retro." A great example of this is the Super Mario RPG remake, where the same composer, Yoko Shimomura, went and redid all of her original music.

      @@PianistTanookiAgain, I don’t disagree with anything you said in terms of music quality and how people retro music has changed throughout time. And I agree it is a biased, nostalgic take. The only thing I disagree is that he never made a blanket comment saying that retro music is objectively definitively better than today’s orchestral arrangements. He has stated several times in all of these videos, but especially this one and wave 6 that he usually prefers the simpler, MIDI versions and he gives his reasons why. But he also appreciates and usually likes the 8 Deluxe versions. You can agree or disagree with his reasons, but just to be fair to him, he mentions frequently that it is his opinion and he does explain why he comes to that conclusion.

    Love this whole series! Music analysis is as fun as the game itself IMO
    Love what you do!
    (The foot tapping over the music was a little distracting though)

    didn't listen to the entirety of waluigi stadium, the last note is the wrong one and they completely removed the beginning section from the loop

    What i gathered from Waluigi stadium is that From the GCN to 8Dlx they gave priority to the guitar and The tumtum tumtum tumtumtu. While in the GNc version is theother way around. Thats What i got 🤷🏽 im not that versed with music so i may or may not be right

    Waluigi Stadium being goofy fits his personality. He's such a cartoony anti-hero and Nintendo knows it. Probably why he'll never get his own game.
