@@nancypho7873 the book is super long, with short chapters, it has several narrators, and a very special essence that not every director could translate into a screen successfully. Louis Hofmann is an exceptional actor -- his work in "Dark" is some of the best I've seen. Also, count this as one of the best trailers I've seen for anything in recent years.
I am so pleasantly surprised to learn that Louis Hoffman was cast . During the time I was reading the novel, I told others that I pictured him in the role of Werner Pfennig as I was reading the book -- that he would be perfect for the role. imagine my surprise when viewing the trailer that indeed he was cast. The film looks amazing!
I cannot begin to explain how the book changed my entire life and led me to my World War II interest. Ever since I found they were making it into a series, I have been avidly checking RUclips for any new information. I was one of the lucky 200 people who won the sweepstakes to watch the first episode and an exclusive conversation between Shawn Levy and Anthony Doer. The first episode was filled with incredible cinematography; you can tell that Shawn truly put his entire heart and soul into this beautiful series. I cannot wait for it to come out and I urge everyone to read the book if you haven’t. Anthony brings atmosphere to his writing in a way that I’ve never seen before. ❤️

Louis Hofmann is an really incredible actor! So happy for him. After "Dark", i really hoped und wished for him, to be part of a new era of german actors!! Lars Eidinger as well - great choice to have him on board!
I grew up in the old town of St malo, It took decades to rebuild after the war, mostly because people wanted to rebuild it as it was... the city got destroyed at 90%. Cannot wait to see the movie. I m glad there is a movie about civilians under the bombs.
I love Lars Eidinger as an actor, he immerses himself in every role he plays so beautifully. I've seen him in the film "Tabu: The Soul Is a Stranger on Earth" where he plays Georg Trakl, an Austrian poet who had an incestuous relationship with his sister, had to participate in the I. World War and (maybe accidentally) killed himself at a young age with drugs. His sister killed herself after that too, she was also quite young. Very tragic and dark, as are the poems of Trakl. But Lars Eidinger was captivating in the leading role and since then I like him very much. I've seen him in 2 episodes of "Tatort", which is "the German NCIS", but runs since much longer and was copied by the Americans I guess, because it's an older TV show than any similar American show. And in those 2 episodes of Tatort Eidinger played a psycho, who broke into womens homes, brushed his teeth, lived there while his potential victims weren't home and at some point killed them. He was scary and very convincing. He can play emotionally unstable and creepy characters beautifully. I'm glad he gets more recognition outside of the German-speaking countries too. :)

After seeing 1917 and all quiet on the western front there is something way too Hollywood about the way this looks. Maybe it’s just the trailer but idk.
I’m happy they gave Louis main character, he is such a great actor. This book is famous, the story is good and the cast looks amazing along with the cinematography. This is one of the few movies I really want to see this year
This book was a true masterpiece to me, probably my favorite of the last ten years. Early reviews are not instilling much confidence that this will capture the magic of the novel- 38% on Rotten Tomatoes but it’s early. I’m by no means a book purist and often like different directions but it seems like a lot of characters were sidelined in Werner’s storyline. I’ll give it a chance though!
You can always trust Netflix or American medias in general to avoid giving any German character depth in a WW2 setting, or reducing it to the bare minimum so as to have the "one good German" and then only display very clichéd evil SS officers and fanatics.

I was traveling around France reading the same book when I ended up in St. Malo. I finished that book there and thought to go buy another one. The bookshop had a peculiar bookshelf of English language books - they were all about St. Malo or the region of Brittany. They were all cooking books for tourists except for one - a book of fiction. I picked the book - and in 2-3 days I didn't want to finish the last page. Such a profound effect did it have on me, and I became obsessed with spreading the word among my friends and family. Now they made a film - and let me tell you, this film better be good.
Good to hear that you visited St Malo and had a good time, at least reading that book! Did you know that the great writer Chateaubriand was buried on the "Petit Bé" right in front of the remparts of the old city of St Malo?
Oh my lord...This looks amazing. Just... This trailer moves me in so many ways that I'm actually tearing up. Makes me remember how when I was in middle school, an elderly woman who survived the Holocaust was invited to speak to my class. God, her story was heartbreaking. She came from a small village where many Jewish people lived, including some of her extended family. She got sent to a concentration camp along with most of the village. She, of course, survived. But sadly, every single member of her entire extended family, save for a cousin, had all died at different concentration camps. The village itself was pretty much wiped out. I wish, I wish I could remember her name but her face, I'll never forget. I'll always remember the pain, sorrow, and grief in her voice as she told her story. There was some anger in her voice as well, as she should be angry. After she was done with telling her story, our teacher asked if we had any questions. Not many did nor did they give a damn. In fact, during the woman's talk, there was a small group of about four or five of my classmates, sitting on benches above me. They were laughing, snickering and joking around while this good woman was reliving her nightmare, as she probably did everyday but they were so rude and disrespectful. I wanted to turn around and hit them in their faces, I was so enraged. But I didn't. In the end, the teacher thanked her for telling us her story. We said goodbye to her and she left. This was in the early '90's so it was quite awhile ago so, she's more than likely since passed away. I hope she's found some peace now. God bless her. I apologize for such a long post but this movie looks so beautiful, haunting and tragic yet shows hope and love as well. I look forward to seeing this Limited Series. I'm gonna need a lot of Kleenex at hand because man, am I soft touch!!! 😊
Thank you for sharing your experience. I couldn't look away from your story. Like the victims of Hiroshima, the stories from the Holocaust survivors who retell their lives are just haunting, shocking and heartbreaking. I can't believe that people can ever be this evil, I hope this never happens again
@@stevebennettan3336It's unfortunately still happening. Israel and it's attack on Palestinians, Russia attacking Ukraine and so on. Lots of ugly still going on.
How dare you denigrate the memory of Canadian heroes from the glorious SS battalions. Even the Jewish president gives their veterans a standing ovation.
I knew survivors of Buchenwald - a couple and the sister of the wife. Their experience was so shattering the only way they could process it was to tell funny stories about life in a concentration camp - I never heard anything but truly comical stories about it from them. Part of their rationale was to NEVER - even long after the war - give the Nazis the satisfaction of having broken them. They were among the most amazing people I've ever met in this life...
It feels different from the book though. I think they wanted to add tension to the story by having Werner hunting down Marie. I don't remember that part. All I remember is Werner hunting illegal radio broadcasts not the girl herself. Regardless, I'm still excited for this.
I read the book a couple years back. Then travelled to St. Malo last year. I wonder how they’ll do the city justice. It’s truly a magical place, just the right essence the book needs.
Not a reader by any means but just got my first library card (at 44 yrs old) and picking this book up tomorrow as my GF and I have a date night in November and she recommended I read the book first. The things we do when in love :)
Entrancing adaptation for once. Cinematography is lusciously shot. More so refreshing to see Aria Mia Loberti, a beautiful, smart actress with no formal acting training taking the lead role. The haunting score of James Newton Howard (Dark Knight) inexorably draws you into each scene.
Of course Louis Hofmann who was one of the main caracter on the Dark series would be on a serie with the reference "Light"😅 amazing book! Cannot wait to see it ❤
This movie was a great opportunity to do it in different languages (German and French), like 1899 (series), keeping each dialogue in the 'native' language.
I'm so happy to finally watch this! Beautiful wardrobe, clothing is PERFECT for that period. The actors are very good. And, Louis Hofmann looks like a younger Owen Wilson. Loberti, and Aria Mia Loberti both bring an uplifting lightness, as well as true 'hope' to the screen. ❤ All in all, the casting for this short series is perfect. ❤
People need to understand that book and movie are two completely different ways to tell a story. So if you love the book remember you will always have it exactly the way you love it and try to see the movie as a different way to tell the same story (of course as long as they don't destroy it completely). I hope is a good movie, seems awesome.
thank you!! i also hate when people discredit the people who prefer the movie or haven’t read the book but seen the movie, i have extreme dyslexia and add so a teen chapter novel with let’s say 20 chapters can take me MONTHS to read because my brain physically can’t comprehend what i’m reading. not to mention it’s like $40 for a book in canada now and $10 for a movie
@@that1pretty.potprincess779 As long as the movie versions of books present the Truth . .....you know like. ....not making it appear that someone is a hero when he fought for his country's independence against an Allied Nation during WW2, when in reality he was fighting on behalf of the same evil portrayed in the book.
0:37 B24 bombers do not have those kind of bomb bay doors. Their bomb bays retract into the body almost like roll up doors to reduce drag. B17 bombers and others had doors that swung open like is shown in the trailer. Not to mention the B24 was primarily used for day time bombings. It looks like Netflix should have used the British Lancaster bomber which was both used at night and had bomb bay doors as shown in this trailer.

Shawn Levy done an amazing job. All the things were put perfectly to make you feel like you are in that era and with each episode my love for his work getting stronger. I am at episode 3 and don't want it to end. Loving every second of it. ❤
I really hope Frederick is in this adaptation!! After reading his scenes in the novel, he quickly became one of my favourite characters in literature 🥺
he’s my favorite character too and it’s so sad and disappointing that he’s not getting any recognition in adaptation! we barely learnt the actor’s name and now it’s said he’s gonna appear in one episode only! i’m so afraid they’re gonna minimise his presence or worse - change his character💔

Wonderful short and to the point series. Whenever I watch anything concerning the first and Second World War I often wonder how would I have faired in these people's places. We many times take our lives for granted and only feel blessed, fortunate when something or someone is taken away from us. How would the youth of today fare with the technology and all of the conveniences? Not very well I imagine as the last generations have been spoiled.
You have a sickness that can't be cured - and likely deserve it... @@dimass4788
Omg finally!! The book was so good it's one of my favorite historical fiction novels ❤
Whats the name of book
@akilhari7681 All the light we cannot see. They didn't change the name 😅
@@ahmedbanaga8185 thank u
@@akilhari7681Same name as the movie. Anthony Doerr is the author. Also check a newer, also awesome book, _Cloud Cuckoo Land_
It feels different from the book though. I think they wanted to add tension to the story by having Werner hunting down Marie. I don't remember that part. All I remember is Werner hunting illegal radio broadcasts not the girl herself. Regardless, I'm still excited for this.
The book was so good. Definitely one of my best reads... The adaptation seems bit different but i hope they do justice to the novel...
Watched the 4 parts of the film. It's amazing! Visuals, sound, music, acting and story - beautiful! A masterpiece in my opinion.
Just watched the entire series on a rainy Sunday. Absolutely beautiful, thoroughly enjoyed this ❤
I read the book a couple years back. Then travelled to St. Malo last year. I wonder how they’ll do the city justice. It’s truly a magical place, just the right essence the book needs.
Finally a different kind of story this looks amazing
Not a reader by any means but just got my first library card (at 44 yrs old) and picking this book up tomorrow as my GF and I have a date night in November and she recommended I read the book first. The things we do when in love :)
Entrancing adaptation for once. Cinematography is lusciously shot. More so refreshing to see Aria Mia Loberti, a beautiful, smart actress with no formal acting training taking the lead role. The haunting score of James Newton Howard (Dark Knight) inexorably draws you into each scene.
Have to admit - this was one change of an ending I was happy to see…
Of course Louis Hofmann who was one of the main caracter on the Dark series would be on a serie with the reference "Light"😅 amazing book! Cannot wait to see it ❤
I am getting goosebumps. The book was one of the best I have read. Hope they do justice to the characters and the story line. Can't wait!!
I love that Netflix is making movies as often as they make shows, and at that, this looks stellar. Excited!
Loberti, and
Aria Mia Loberti both bring an uplifting lightness, as well as true 'hope' to the screen. ❤
All in all, the casting for this short series is perfect. ❤
I see Lars Eidinger, I click. He's a force of nature.

As long as the movie versions of books present the Truth . .....you know like. ....not making it appear that someone is a hero when he fought for his country's independence against an Allied Nation during WW2, when in reality he was fighting on behalf of the same evil portrayed in the book.
I recognize that talented young actor from "Dark". So glad to see him doing more work!
Loved the book years ago and stumbled upon this mini series on Netflix by chance. They did a wonderful job casting this; beautiful acting and the scenery was brilliant. My only regret is they only did 4 episodes.
Manifesting justice being done to this masterpiece of a book.
This looks amazing! Book was marvelous, brilliant cast, can‘t wait for Louis Hofmann and Hugh Laurie. Loved them in Dark and Dr. House.
Louis looks amazing in this!
I read this novel first. Can't believe that soon I will watch its movie as well. I was shattered by this story first, and now I am eagerly waiting to be shattered again with this new movie.
Jonas looks so grown up. And his English speaking accent, wow...perfect
Only watching this because I saw Louis Hofmann on the thumbnail 🤩
This looks and sounds incredible. Can't wait to see it. Finally a decent looking film by Netflix.
They make many, many decent films. Silly.
It's a series.
They also make fantastic series. Hill House was epic.
@@singbluesilver1973 could you name 2 or 3 released this year that are worth watching? I’m not trying to be sarcastic, just can’t think of any atm.
@@aksharaghav9657 thank you, I didn’t know that.
Thank God it's a limited series.
Otherwise Netflix would have canceled it after the first season just like the way it did with good series like 1899 and Lockwood & Co.
Good doesn't equal popular.
I normally don't care much for fiction but this book was amazing. I hope this series does the book justice.
Shawn Levy done an amazing job. All the things were put perfectly to make you feel like you are in that era and with each episode my love for his work getting stronger. I am at episode 3 and don't want it to end. Loving every second of it. ❤
I cannot believe that the cast of this film was read from my mind😮😮😮
I really hope Frederick is in this adaptation!! After reading his scenes in the novel, he quickly became one of my favourite characters in literature 🥺
he’s my favorite character too and it’s so sad and disappointing that he’s not getting any recognition in adaptation! we barely learnt the actor’s name and now it’s said he’s gonna appear in one episode only! i’m so afraid they’re gonna minimise his presence or worse - change his character💔
@@autumnislife_ I'm so glad you feel the same way I do, we can be disappointed together and I guess just read the book whenever we want to feel inspired by him 😭
Just saw the series. It is amazing. The actors were all absolutely brilliant. Highly recommend!
One of the best originals Netflix has produced in years!
For those who don’t know his name he is Louis Hofmann, a german child actor who has become a class act now
louis is such a phenomenal actor OMG
Wow! I'm really surprised to see Felix Camerer in this series! I really love All Quiet on the Western Front 2023 version. And now he's a part of not just one...but two movies which adapt from an bestseller books. Also, I'm going to hear him speak in his first English speaking movie
I got chills when I saw Felix Kammerer
Wonderful short and to the point series. Whenever I watch anything concerning the first and Second World War I often wonder how would I have faired in these people's places. We many times take our lives for granted and only feel blessed, fortunate when something or someone is taken away from us. How would the youth of today fare with the technology and all of the conveniences? Not very well I imagine as the last generations have been spoiled. Great story, well directed, shot, wonderful set designs as well as old footage - of course the acting was top notch. Let's all welcome the young girl who's taken on a role as a blind girl ... fantastic... thanks.
Indeed a beautiful series. I Just checked the actress "Aria" who played the blind girl is actually a blind in real life as well and this is her first acting role and This movie was her first ever audition.
The only novel i read to not portray another ww2 story. My favorite novel from the perspectives of these two children. Please read if you haven't
Oh my god! This book broke me into pieces, I remember that I cried a lotttttt. Can’t wait to watch this

I watched the whole thing when I was on a 4 hour flight. Holy cow! That was the fastest flight I’ve even been.
Beautiful. Amazing.
"Light lasts forever . . . Darkness lasts not even for one second when you turn on the light."
Goosebumps and tears
It’s so cool to see this book become a reality it looks SO COOL it’s exactly what I imagined when I read it
Read this book a few years ago, guess it’s time to read it again! 🤓
I get to see three of my favorite actors on screen together? Sign me up! I’m so excited, looks like a beautifully done movie !
Louis Hoffman is a really good actor, I can only see a bright future for him in the cinema industry.
My god, I've just finished the series and it's mesmerizing, beautifully brought to life by the creators...we need to be reminded of the turbulent and dark history of the past so that we can learn and shape the future from it and that's what this series has done...Extrodinarly written, produced and directed by the creators and brilliantly performed by the cast...It should get all the awards out there to the very list....hats down❤
This seems like an promising retelling of a famous novel. Netflix has already done an outstanding job with the retelling of "All Quiet On The Western Front." It's nice to see that this will be Felix Kammerer's second film.
"Cloud cuckoo land" from the same author is yet another masterpiece
What an incredible cast! I can’t wait to watch it!!
The book is amazing. I am glad it's finally getting an adaptation
One of the best books I've read is gonna turn into a show. Usually the screen adaptation is worse, but this one might be just as good. The casting and cinematography already look outstanding. I can't wait!!
ok. the book made me cry. the teaser made me cry. and now the trailer is making me cry. i wonder how i'll react to the movie.💖
This looks really great! Great cinematography, location, settings, and visual effects, everything!
I love this book; I did not recognize the story in this trailer. I like the cast and hope that they will do justice to the book.
Masterpiece ! we need more movies like this, filled with hope, love and sacrifice.
This looks incredibly epic. I thought it was a movie and not a series. Now that I know it's a series, I can't wait. Looks like Netflix spent big money and the story looks good.
Please people, just read the book first, it's truly a gem.
So pumped for this!!! Louis deserves all the love and appreciation ❤
I've read the book twice now. Absolutely gorgeous, moving and so poignant. I hope the film lives up to it.
the whole movie in 3 minuts. Thanks. Time saving.
Thank you so much for choosing this novel. I am thrilled and grateful ❤
