Being a Humvee tour driver in Sedona, I took people up that terrible road on tours. Way back in the day when hippies roamed the earth, they camped all over up that Canyon so Sedona made it a law that there was no camping. Not sure how they get away with it because it is actually national Forest. Once you get to the top of the road with a lookout is you can camp there legally and there are various small spots. At the lookout where you were, there was a scene in a movie taken at that exact location in that Chevy Chase movie where they skidded to a stop when they find out the aunt is dead. Also you may have noticed when you cross the bridge coming down the long hill from Sedona next to the Mexican market, you may have noticed a prominent home up on the hill with a manikin on the lanai or balcony. Lucille Ball used own that home and the manikin used to look just like her but I noticed is starting to fade with old age
