- Harley Hard To Start-Slow Starter Motor-Easy Fix | Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic
I noticed my Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic lately has become harder to start. When turning over the engine the starter motor would turn the engine over slow and most times would stop on the compression stroke. This little fix fixed the issue right away and now it turns over with ease. Just like it did when it was new.

You are right, both positive connections and grounds are equally important. All need a little protection.
Cool 👍
I would recommend one more thing, a little dab of dielectric grease. It will keep the corrosion off your cables. Gonna go do mine right now, thanks for the idea! God Bless Brother!!
You know I use dielectric grease but for some reason I didn’t think to use it here. Any how great tip. Thanks 🙏
Just a little dab L’ do ya?
I am trying to locate the starter live cable to the battery so I can start my bike without taking the saddle off on a dark wet night stuck at the side of the road. But I can't seem to see it on my 2002 fat boy .
Just a tip. a tea spoon on baking soda and warm water will clear in up. then put some anti corrosion grease (Automotive Dielectric Grease Electronics Lubricant) on it. The First step neutralizes oxidisation and the grease prevents oxygen and air getting to the metal components. This increase conductivity and the good contact will continue for years to come for reliable riding.

Im doing a total makeover and refresh on my Harley Iron 883 Sportster and this video really gave me a great idea so thanks. Im putting a new battery in and was gonna clean up all the terminals and get new terminal covers etc so cleaning the starter ground is a great idea to compliment the new battery install as well.
Awesome! Glad I could help in some small way.
A little die-electrical grease on the washers and cable end will go a long way in preventing corrosion build up again.
Good tip 👍
Definitely don’t do that
@@ranranpoopants Why not ? What would you suggest he do to keep corrosion from building up?
Hello Mike, That wire brush really worked great It made everything shinny and clean. thank you for sharing the tip. Take care. 💕NonnaGrace
Thanks 🙏
Awesome easy to the point video…My 2019 Street Glide CVO has been hard to start for more than a year. I put a new battery in and same problem. Saw this video and cleaned my cable and amazingly it’s good as new…Thanks so much and keep those videos coming… Be safe…..
Great!
Hello.
I was able to find corrosion on the terminals of my bike in your video.
The terminals of my bike were corroded and powder was coming out.
I'm really thankful to you.
Glad I could be of help 👍. Take care
Great tip, the results are impressive!
Shit is real 😂 thanks Brian
Oh wow, I need to check this out. My starter sounds slow all the time, but during winter my bike really has troubles starting as soon as it's below 45 degrees out.
its either that or the solenoid plunger/contacts or the starter. Check battery too. If it’s weak that could be an issue. thanks for watching
@@TechnMoto I have a little plug in volt meter, it looks like the battery charges well and holds its charge for a while. Slowly trickles out over about 7-10 days though. It's just that it drains really quick when trying to start the bike in the cold. I probably have three attempts before it starts just clicking. Thanks for the tips!
Have the battery tested properly. Cranking amps is what's important. Could be you have one or more bad cells in the battery due to sulfating. I mean I don't know from here, lol. Battery should hold a charge for more than seven to ten days. Could you have something draining the battery? If the battery is more than four years old I would replace it. Here is a good article on sulfating batteries- www.power-sonic.com/blog/what-is-a-sulfated-battery-and-how-do-you-prevent-it/
Hope this helps, take care
This is my last hope. I'm gonna try it today
Update: it worked 😃😃 I've been trying to figure out the issue for long time. Thank you
Update 2: worked for some time & started making issues again. Looks like issue in my starter
Dude that's so cool! glad I could help.
Thanks , this helped my 07 sporty. The ground was covered in road grime. Cleaned it up ,starts up so much faster.
@@advicefromdiego glad it helped. 👍🙏
Everything that you've recommend and that I've tried has worked 100%! Thanks 😄
Glad it helped and thanks for the comment
Great advice mate and boy that bike looks great. Take care !
She’s an oldie but still going. Thanks 🙏
My 08 low rider was staring wicked hard, found the ground wire, cleaned it up real good and fired right up!
Thanks for the content!
Glad it helped. 👍
This is exactly the video I needed to see
@@angel.m9960 cool
Awesome tip, Going to try this! as my 03 hertiage seems to not turn on straight away after its been warmed up or even after riding to a destination. turning it off and on after riding it will just take its time and i find i have to use the choke to get it going even when the bikes warm.
could the ground possibly be the issue?
it was working a month or so ago. Bike sat since now she just has trouble starting
I would check the battery, the charging system and all connections and clean as needed. could also be a starter issue.
Thank you so much I never thought about the ground wire
@@JerielWilliam hope it helps
My ride is 18 years old and am just now having this problem...ty for the advice.
@@dabosman43 hope it helps
I'm gonna try this for sure. Thanks mate.
@@alangerrard3548 can’t hurt. Good luck.
I have that on my 2014 breakout. Starter ended up just not working while my dad was riding it one day, but before that it would turn over slow, just figured it was because of high compression. I ordered a new starter for it, but I'll try that out before replacing
Check the ground and positive wiring/connections. Chances are it maybe more than that. Good luck 👍 .
I have a 19 breakout that cranks but doesn’t turn over.. after several try’s it might run, but when trying again it may start and die out.. did you find the culprit to your problem
@MrTonytouchy Nah, it's either the BCM or the start switch, but I just wired in an external push button switch to get me by.
Thanks for the tip awesome
👍
Great tip, ty
@@CabinGuy hope it helps.
Yep, my 08 sportster does this until it just stops on compression and no crank. I replaced the solenoid contacts inside with a kit. Cleaned the ground cable and still did the same thing. Whole new starter on order, going to swap out the whole unit. I did the cheapest fix first with no improvement. It really puts a drain on the Battery HD AGM. Only a year old. Will see what happens. Last resort man. Big job. Thanks for the tip though.
Check your spark plug wires too. I’ve seen where a bad wire would not fire the plug causing more compression for the starter to push through. Just a thought.
Check the brushes in your starter, especially if youve got a new battery and solenoid kit in it. If its not the brushes then its the starter clutch sticking.
Good job mate, I'm gonna try that.👍
Thanks.
thank you for helpful information, put this should be anti corrosion
@@almohandskhaild 👍
Thanks for the tip. I'm most definitely going to try themes on my Dyna FXDX. It start soooo slow.
Can’t hurt to try it.
Yes that was a very helpful tip,,,.and god bless you too!
Thank you! You too!
use some battery coat to help the oxidation away. great vid. tks.
Thanks
Great video thank you for the advice/tip, also would this cause my bikes voltage to drop i have a sound system and when just idling the voltage drops below 12 but stays up above 10 ?? Any tips
@@jesseg573 I believe depending on the bike it needs to idle at a certain speed. Would need to check the specs on the model and probably test it.
@ ok thank you for the info 💪💪🙏🙏🙏
Excellent sharing thank you For sharing
Thanks 🙏
Wow hope this is my problem racking my brain over slow cranking on a 2014 Road King put new battery in took starter out to starter rebuild guy said it was good. Checked all connections tight used voltmeter everywhere found nothing still slow cranking. Gonna double check wires again after watching this.
If the starter truly is ok then check all connections going to starter. Make sure they are clean and making good contact. Good luck
Simple fix, 👍maybe hit it with the corrosion stop spray afterwards.
Good idea 👍
That was my thinking you’re basically exposing it even more to the elements by sanding it maybe some electrical grease might help protect it.
Love the color sending you love and support
Thanks 🙏
You might try permatex 31163 and have less trouble , even on the battery connections .......... I wound not use it on multi pin plug ins , you can cross over the power to other pins ...........
Ok
My bike does the exact same thing!
Sadly there is no such easy acces to the starter on the FLTSC (Softtail Heritage Classic 2005)
I would have to dissassemble everything and remove the oiltank...
The dealership "repair" would probably cost a fortune haha
I hear you
Wow. Definitely doing this.
Cool
Cool. Thank you.
You bet!👍
You mentioned the ground cable to the starter comes from the negative battery terminal. Does the cable from the positive battery terminal go to the starter solenoid?
Their is a positive cable on the starter solenoid
Yes the positive lead on the battery goes to the starter solenoid. That’s why on older Dynas and touring bikes you can jump the bike from the positive lug on the starter and any good frame ground instead of having to take the seat off to access the battery
Nice video frnd 👌 thanks for sharing 😊👍🌹🤝🌹
Thank you 🙏
Is this at the same place on an 18 Ultra? Mine has been sluggish since I bought it in August. Replaced battery and still same issue.
I’m not sure on those. Hopefully someone here can help or try a Harley forum or a service manual. Best of luck
Ok , what are you using on your outer rims ? They look super shiny !!!
I use meguiar polish.
Where do I buy a starta
😂
No seriously, Ty bro
😂👍
tks.Mike
I don’t know what I did but your welcome 👍
I could not find a ground near the starter on a 09 Electra Glide Ultra. Too bad because starter slow at times.
👍
Mine 19 breakout makes the same noise but doesn’t turn over.. I’m hoping that this would work
I know some harley starters are having issues with the drive gear/clutch. good luck
my 114 lowriders do the same, can start 10 times very well and then harder and that reset the clock, i follow your instruction i'm hope it's gonna help...
Thanks for your video
Hope it does.
Sir is it battery wires which need to be clean or any other wire present.. I’ve harley street bob dyna please help, it showing hard start
could be a dirty ground wire. Could be a bad battery. could be a bad engine starter. get yourself someone who can help you on site.
yes, very slow start in the cold morning, but in the warmer afternoon, the bike starts fine, what causes that issue?
Check battery and starter. Hope that helps.
good info
Thanks 🙏
How do I access starter cables on my 2017 fat boy s? Thanks
I'm not sure maybe someone here or a harley forum can help.
My bike does the same thing but only turns over 1 time really slow and then just clicks???? Any thoughts? I cleaned all the grounds battery is good
Battery, relay, grounds or starter issue, just my thoughts
Same sounding issue when try to start .
Full charge still no go
Will start when jump started
Could also be a starter/solenoid issue. Check all cable connections. Hope you figure it out and if you do let me know please.
If you are going to do this, why wouldn't you clean the actual starter connection point as well?
@@randallissimo you can do whatever you like. If your stuff is bad/dirty cleaning can’t hurt.
Merci 😉
👍
I just bought another battery....... I hope you're wrong lol..
The bike is a 2016 with original battery, so probably about the time to change.
I would say yes, time for a new battery lol. lasted a very long time.

Maybe for some this is an issue but for 95% of Harley Riders this isn't the issue, 95% of the time it's a faulty Voltage regulator or failing Stator which Harley should of addressed 15 years ago and is worthy of a class action
@@greenmarine5 neither one has anything to do with a starter issue.
