Failed Attempt to Recrystallize Wood Ash Lye. Any Suggestions?

  • Decided to take some of the advice in the comments of another video and recrystallize the wood ash lye I got before proceeding with the silver refining of the silver chloride from the nitric acid refining series I was doing. This experiment did not yield pure lye as I had hoped it would. The crystals do seem better than before, but still brown and therefore, impure. I will proceed with the refining videos and see what happens to the batch of silver that goes with this wood ash lye. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised. Do you see anything that should be done differently here that I can try next time to get better results? Thanks for any input.

I put water above the ashes and scoop of anything that floats, make sure to use soft water like rainwater. Boil for 1/2 hour, let cool down and ashes sink to bottom then scoop water/ lye off the surface and fine filter. Hope this helps.

It does. I mixed the ashes in tap water and then ran it all through a t-shirt into another bucket. Maybe that’s where some contaminates are coming in.

@@ChildersCastingandRefining Tap water has chlorine, chloramine and sometimes fluoride. Most scrappers avoid tap water and use distilled so as to not add unwanted chemicals. I enjoy your videos, keep em coming. 👍

Maybe put the lye water to a centrifuge to filter impurities.

To get pure Lye / sodium hydroxide, you have to filter the fluid. Coffee filters are a possibility. for drying, Glass is best, but if you get the lye to hot, well it's by by glass pot. Pure lye when heated in a glass container will melt the glass

Tried that but no luck. It seemed like pure lye formed in the filters afterwards, but the glass definitely did not get as hot as expected. Bad sign.
