GEN2 to GEN 3 Development Update

  • It's been a few months since I made a video about making a trade between GEN2 and GEN3. Since then I've been hard at work to make it a lot more stable. In this video we'll talk more about the current issues I'm facing and some frequently asked questions.
    There are a few things that aren’t mentioned in the video. So I decided to mention them here.
    Stat Experience to EVs
    In GEN2 there is no limit to stat experience. When converting to GEN3 it would then be possible to go over the allowed maximum of 510 EVs. In the software I programmed that all EVs will be lowered until they are less or equal to the allowed maximum.
    Are these Pokémon Legit?
    It depends. When transferring to Pokémon Home it mostly depends on if the Pokémon has a legal move set. Our Fissure Machamp in this video for example was not allowed into Pokémon Bank. Everyone else is accepted without any problems. But if you for example would check these Pokémon in PKHeX then these Pokémon would not be considered legit, mostly because of the ribbon I decided to give to them. To make them more legal it would be best to not give them the ribbon and to try and find a PID that would match the IVs, but this is low priority in my eyes.

      @Gardivanyth 2 года назад +47

      @@-justo- That's not what they meant.
      This device is the first time direct communication between gen 2 and gen 3 is possible. Pokemon caught in gen 1 and 2 cartridges were essentially trapped in the past.
      The Virtual Console games don't directly solve this issue, you would need to modify save data to essentially flash your cartridge's save onto your 3DS - something I doubt most players would want to bother with. More importantly, there's no way for these Gen 1-2 Pokemon to visit the generations in between - they're forced to go directly to 7. For Neo, this is important because they want a Ribbon Master Eevee from gen 1; they need to be able to access gens 3-6 to get all those ribbons.

      If you don’t want to wait you could use Metropolis’ Conversion Utility. It doesn’t do real time conversion on real hardware, but it’s a PC software that converts a Pokemon from the Gen I/II format to the Gen III format by copying it from a Gen I/II save file and putting it in a Gen III save file.

    • @zerolinkyoshi
      @zerolinkyoshi 2 года назад +10

      @@Unholyxkight The PC software referenced in my comment functions the same way as the code on the chip in Goppier's device. The device "modifies" the save data in the same way. The only difference is that Goppier's device is just buying a single piece of hardware rather than two, and that it requires a two-way trade rather than a one-way transfer. There's no difference in legitimacy between using unofficial software on a PC vs using unofficial software (firmware?) on a custom PCB.
      Furthermore, OP and other commenters in the thread had nothing to say about "legitimacy," and were more concerned with the capability to get Pokemon from Gen II -> III. via: "The idea that Pokemon stuck in 20+yo save files can finally get all the way up on the Switch makes me happy."
      Goppier's device is very impressive and his videos breaking down the trade process are very well researched and well made, but acting like existing methods are somehow less legitimate and are irrelevant to OP just because they're not on dedicated hardware is an insult to the years of effort members of the community put in to researching the Gen I/II and III data structures and developing tools to do this previously.

    This is really awesome. I'd love to buy/make one of these some day. Attaining communication on a link cable between a system in GBA mode and a system in GBC is something I never would have guessed would be possible. That's pretty wild. I could see this opening the door to lots of capabilities for inter-system communication for GBA ROM hacks. I'm so looking forward to seeing where this project goes. So much potential!

    Really cool to see how you've been refining this even more!!!
    Super cool to see how you have those 2 separate modes to toggle between stat preservation and Pokemon preservation. Out of curiosity, since only Unown I and V are possible to be shiny in Gen II due to a quirk in the DVs, does trading, for example, a shiny Unown A from Fire Red to Gen II make it just a normal Unown A in Gen II, or do you have a way to make it show up as a shiny A?

    • @Goppier
      @Goppier  2 года назад +60

      My code will first make it a Unown A and afterwards try to make it shiny. However like you mentioned, it is only possible to get either I or V shiny in GEN2. So they will become either of those letters in the end

    This is all compatible with Pokemon Home because in terms of legality Pokemon Home already has the necessary flags and checks for a Pokemon from Gen 1 and 2 to transfer to Gen 8 and beyond curtesy of the Virtual Console, but PKHeX will quickly catch any inconsistency they might have. Then again PKHeX has false positives for old NYPC Pokemon for Gen 3 so our milleage may vary.
    The crux of the matter is the legality of those pokemon obtaining moves not allowed in the current gen, as well as Ribbons and what not. From a legality standpoint, Home doesn't care much for Ribbons, but legitimacy wise a Gen 2 pokemon has no business owning Gen 3 ribbons. And for using those Pokemon competitively (which you shouldn't) making them Battle Ready in Gen 8 purges any Legacy moves they might have that could give them an advantage, so it all balances out.

    • @keiyakins

      I can’t speak much on
      Home liking or disliking
      Ribbons
      BUT
      Your sentence about a
      GEN 2 mon having no business with GEN 3 Ribbons
      falls apart somewhat if there’s
      any ribbons those mons could earn after the trading had occurred
      Purging of moves though yes could and should balance or solve some issues though
      I think the crux and basis
      of this device and video series as well as similar projects and notions is that many
      players with old games/carts
      would simply be happy enough to to get their old teams/mons
      Into the Switch Era where they have a much better chance at being preserved.
      There’s actually a few pretty touching sentimental nostalgic stories out there from folks with
      GEN 1 , 2, 3 and 4 save files desperate to get their old mons into a more modern setting for safe keeping and the memories

    • @TinyKatyusha
      @TinyKatyusha 2 года назад +5

      Same here. Even if it's being tricked into thinking the Pokémon are from FireRed and the stats/moves aren't anything wacky, the fact that it didn't red flag the Mew and Celebi in particular surprises me. The rest I'm not so surprised about, but there was only a handful of ways to get Mew and Celebi in Gen3, and the OT obviously wouldn't match the events they originated from in that generation.
      Due to the nature of this project, though, I wouldn't be surprised if some Pokémon are flagged while others are permitted. Not sure exactly what HOME and Bank's protections look for but obviously incorrect moves and modified stats are part of it.

    • @thetechconspiracy2
      @thetechconspiracy2 2 года назад +1

      @@TinyKatyusha I know you could catch Mew via an event in all the Gen 3 games, including FireRed. That doesn't explain how Celebi was able to make it to Bank, unless a bug in Poké Transporter doesn't check the OT of Celebi, since the VC release of Crystal (which uses Poké Transporter to go up to Bank) does let you catch Celebi, the event was hardcoded into that release.

    • @TinyKatyusha
      @TinyKatyusha 2 года назад

      @@thetechconspiracy2 Don't think it looks at the OT or verifies the legitimacy of event Pokémon at all. In my tests I was able to get some Mew and Celebi past Bank's checks that were simply caught with the Action Replay code to make any Pokémon appear in tall grass in Gen4. Some got caught and others didn't, so I have no idea what the checks actually look for.
      Sidenote, I don't condone cheating of course, it was done just to test Bank's legitimacy checks out of curiosity.
      So regardless of what Bank actually looks for, it appears to be anything but perfect.

It always disappointed me to think of gens one and two as islands, distant and cut off from the rest of the series. But the way you tackle this problem, you’re literally building a bridge back in time to those games, saving them in a way that makes them relevant again. It just makes me so happy to see someone putting in the work to make this possible. To fix this problem that’s literally been around for over twenty years! I know everyone who’s played those games is going to want this. I know I do. Thank you so much for making it possible!!

    It's been excellent watching this journey. I think you're onto something with multi-boot: it's very likely that you might be able to get it working that way, as a similar thing is used when connecting the gen 3 games to Colosseum and XD to trade Pokemon, and the Poke Transfer Lab with gen 5 for receiving gen 4 mons works in a very similar way with DS Download Play--it starts the downloaded software, and checks your save file. You can hold select when starting up a GBA to not boot the cartridge and instead load data through the port, so the cartridge slot doesn't have to be empty, and a program loaded that way is very likely to be able to work as a valid method of trading. This would also potentially be able to load up any 6 mons of your choice from any of your PC boxes in the gen 3 game, and trade them without them having to be in the party if it just checks the save file and allows you to choose 6.

But yeah, in order for the device to be sellable I guess it's still needs some changes. I'm amazed the mew passed the Pokebank tho :o and confused by the Machamp not being legit XD probably because of some bits or something, maybe datacorruption or a bug? I wonder if the abilities should be random as well when you trade, when a pokemon has more than a single ability, unless it's the PID that takes care of it?
