I feel that "The Complete Manual" is for lower level then 2000. Vol. 1 starts with basic themes like importance of the centre and such principles as "don't bring out your queen too early". Sounds like topics for 1000 players. At the end of vol. 2 there are chapters on smothered mates, weak back rank and greek gift sacrifices. Sounds like topics for 1500 players.
I am not saying this is a beginner's book, those beginner's concept are illustrated with at times pretty complex examples, but still, 2000 seems to be too high a prerequisite to be able to handle this book. I would say if you are above 1400, that's already good enough level to study with the book, which is the same for "Training with Moska".
I happen to be acquainted with some chapters of the second section of the book, there are always presented games of various difficulty and i feel like the harder ones are probably above 2000. Regarding the opening section, i too felt the themes were’nt really advanced, but the author’s comentary goes beyond the superficial title like: “Do not move the queen early”, although its clearly easier than the second part.
1.Queen into c7 maybe and after 1.Kxc7 2.Nb5+ Kb8 and then 3. Rd8+ luring away the rook from the E file. Rxd8 4.Bf4+ this was the idea of rd8+ if directly bf4 check then re5. So 4 bf4+ Kh8 5.Nc7+ kg8 6.Nxa6+ kh8 7. Nc7+ and now u can find your self..
And I swear I found it on my own
Judgement and Planning in Chess by Max Euwe (in descriptive notation no less lol) had a profound influence on my chess learning, more than Kotov's Think like a GM. Another book that I think is very underrated is Simple Chess by Stean.
Fair enough, but tip of the hat to Kotov. All the guys at my chess club in our then-age and ratings range, 14 or 15, and around 1400-1500, shot up by 200-300 points in a few months after we all got copies of Think Like a Grandmaster. One can overdo Kotov's method, but just BEGINNING to learn how to think about a position, how to use the tree method of analysis, and so on, was chess gold!!
i bought training with Moska recently while i was at scarborough 2017 chess congress and just loving this book so far, my rating is 1750 so i think ive made a great choice. I rarely get to the end of a chess book but feel this one is just what i need.
How did it develop? ...
Daniel, could you do a video review of Pump up your Rating? I'm surprised there isn't one on the entirety of RUclips
Love these reviews 🤓📚
what are your favorite books ? which books (the new ones) you would recommend based on player's rating category ?
Daniel (or anyone for that matter), when a book is intended for use by a player rated approximately 2000 elo, is it beneficial for someone significantly lower to use it to study? I have some chess books which are quite a bit above my level and I find some/most of the study positions and general ideas the book tries to teach throughout to be difficult to understand. Not sure if I really get anything out of them.
Two of the first chess books I owned as a child were Alekhine's Best Games 1908-1923 and Bobby Fischer's 60 Memorable Games. They are at a high level, but I got something out of them - and over time, much much more. Trying to understand games by top players can only be beneficial. But perhaps the question should be, how much effort are you prepared to put in?
Good answer :)
Thank you sir... Your book review video will help us so much that how those books and how use that books☺
Thank you, Daniel. Any thoughts on the US Championship? some truly excellent games were played.
im about 1700-2000, its hard to decide wich one is best !
i thought that book was for beginers
Hello, would you review The Complete Manual of Positionnal Chess Volume 2? thanks
I will do - perhaps my next review.
Thanks to answer back.
Gm Daniel what endgame book should I try my rating is about 1700
100 endgame you must know
Juses de la villa
Qf3?
what was white's move in the last video? please, i must know
Check the video?
what do u mean? the video ends without giving the solution
That was intentional!
Intentional? But now my life is meaningless and empty. Please kind sir, reveal the answer and set free my tormented soul
I'm going for NB5. It blocks black's checkmate threat and creates white's own. What happens from there is normally a red cross followed by losing rating points on the tactics trainer.
I have been a fan Of Daniel for so many years now, and I came a cross this video. Well, still handsome, still articulate, still fantastic. But it is not nice that he does not age. Really annoying:)
Not really fair to only review the ones you like, and are the others shit then?
TheGPel like you can review anything.
Daniel King is not working for New in Chess, so he can support what he thinks is worth supporting. I think this is a very good way to promote great books, because it is somewhat independant of the money making process. Also he is by no means picking at other books, so no final judgement made about all the others.
This reminds me of a story my mom told me , a wife buys her husband 2 ties, he puts one on and his wife says, so you dont like the other one !!!! you are that persons wife.
Ok great stroy man. I think and I know I`m assuming here but I think Danny gets all the New in Chess books send to him. He reads the most of them. Then picks the ones he likes to review. Well there you go thats not fair.
Consider this, though: It sounds like an amicable arrangement--why would Daniel want to additionally say negative things about books and authors?
