i had a complete set of Darkhawk and Secret Defenders but my stepdad was really cruel and one day he Farted on Darkhawk #1 when i had it open and said, the newsprint paper is poreous so it absorbed that Fart and then he walked out of the room and I was humiliated, so i threw away all my comics. Now I want to gret back into it
He's referring to the fact that these comics are essentially the same books as the less expensive versions. However, since these versions are much more scarce than the others due to them being newsstand editions (the UPC) and having the other distinctions listed, they're worth more. Collectors are willing to compete with each other to own more unique and rare books; thus increasing their value. It's not a scam. He just doesn't have the same viewpoints as the collectors that are purchasing these books and increasing demand.
