I'm actually a Dutch native and I struggle with the rolling r 😂(also when learning spanish recently) and have never used the English r while speaking Dutch (but i can say this easily). I'm from the South of Limburg.
Your videos are great. Please keep making them
As a beginner, I got confused about the pronunciation of this letter, and your video really enlightened me. As a French native speaker, rolling the 'r' is very difficult but now, I'm able to learn and understand!
Dank u wel!!! :)
I am glad it helped!
Graag gedaan!
6:16 You will be understood when you use the English R at the beginning of a syllable but it sounds like a heavy American accent
In Afrikaans the first pronunciation is the only correct way to pronounce /r/, and the second pronunciation is considered a speech impediment, because people who do that are usually unable to pronounce /r/ in the correct way.
Ek probeer die brei klank leer vir Nederlands, dit klink vir my mooi, maar ek kry dit nie "verkeerd" uitgespreek nie!
I think it’s influenced by the French pronunciation of the R. Hence, it’s not considered a speech impediment by the Dutch.
Hey, are you still around? can the Guttural R at the back of the throat be used for all words?
Hi William, yes I am still around, although haven’t posted new lessons for a while.
To answer your question: yes, the R at the back of your throat can be used for all words containing the R. But you should use the pronunciation that is easiest to learn for you. As explained in the video, any of the variations I demonstrate is correct.
@@dutchforexpats Awesome to see your still around! Thank you!
I guess the second /r/ phoneme is similar to the French and to the Danish syllable-initial /r/ (a voiced uvular approximant: /ʁ̞/) and it is identical to the German syllable-initial /r/, i.e., a voiced uvular fricative: /ʁ/, which appears in words like „Rat“, „Retten“, „Richtig“, „Rolle“, „Rund“, etc. However I can be mistaken. What is your view on this? Another question: is the /n/ generally pronounced in the combination “en”? Great video, by the way!
Hi Lucas, thanks for your well written comment! Yes you are absolutely right, it is either the voiced or unvoiced uvular fricative. If the r is at the end of the word or syllable, it can also be the voiced uvular approximant (as in the English ‘door’).
Not sure what you mean with your second question.
excellent
thank youu!
Thank you for this video you know how to describe stuff ❤
Thank you so much! Glad it was helpful!
Thanksss❤❤
Great video. The second R is pronounced like the Arabic letter غ , I think
Thanks for your comment Caitlin. Can you give me some examples of Arabic words containing غ? I will check about the pronunciation similarity.
@@dutchforexpats the Arabic غ is similar to the french R.

Like the word (Morocco) written in Arabic(مغرب) (غ)
Let Google Translate pronounce this word in Arabic
Do you think that Dutch people would understand me if I can't pronounce the hard R? I can't even do that in my native language (Polish) :(( Great video by the way, thanks!
Young Dutch kids (toddlers) also can't pronounce the hard R, and everybody can understand them perfectly. Like my son, when he was 3, he said 'yays' when he meant 'race'. Also, you can also just pronounce Dutch words with an English accent, and people will understand you. Like the word 'drinken'.
So, you are fine, Yoona!
For me as a native speaker of a Slavic language, the only right way to pronounce R is the hard R. All other are a sphaakhebhek. :) Joking! But people where I live pronounce it like this, more like an ''AH'', which is especially confusing if the letter ''G'' comes before that ''R''. For instance ''groen'' sounds like ''hhoen'', ''groep'' sounds like ''hhoep''.
Hi Ivan, thanks for your comment. I truly understand that learning the Dutch pronunciation can be challenging for certain 'tongues'. This is one of the main reasons I started this channel.
Great content. Maybe you can do a video with sentences with this forsaken letter so we can bark at the phone and have an excuse
Try this one: Ik rij in een rode Range Rover door Rotterdam! 😄
@@dutchforexpats thanks! Will do
