You are proposing that United States would be better of as a Democratic Socialist and maybe you're right but let's not turn a blind eye on what this is about. Politicians uses their power to change the society based on their idealogues NOT by representing their people. That's the problem. That in itself is an abuse of power. The politicians job is to represent the people regard laws, concerns and well-being. The key word is REPRESENT not DICTATE. Most politicians now dictates their ideology to the people and brainwash them into it. We elect them because they REPRESENT our interest NOT to spew honeyed words.

    • @Draugh39
      @Draugh39 4 года назад +6

      @@tstjohn777 I've in Sweden far longer than that. I grew up there in the 1960-1990s. Dad was what we call, "Gråsosse" ("gray socialist") that mean he was onboard with having social programs to help improve education, health care etc. (we needed that as Sweden was a very poor country up until WW2 was finished). But the whole thing had to be soundly financed which mean that he would not accept the ideas that came out of the "champagne socialists" that was in power in the 1970s and 1980s. So then you vote for parties with more sensible economic views. Remember that the "social-democrats" were in power during the time we went from a poor to a rich country, but those "grey socialists" wanted a mixed economy based on making life easier for businesses to start up and where there was a balance between trade unions and business-owners that minimised strikes or lock-outs.

This video is made to make Sweden model look bad in comparison to the USA way. Sweden is of course not just all good, and all countries has their problems. But i would rather live in Sweden with this system than the american system that makes me sick just hearing about it. If Sweden plays their card wrong we might end up as USA (bad for the people). If USA get some of the good things from Sweden it's better for the people in USA. Even if USA would try hard to become as Sweden it would not be possible, and no country should copy from another country instead pick the good parts from all systems.

      HappySwedishPancake marginal tax is the tax you play on your last made 1000 SEK. If you stay below the bracket for govt tax, it’s about 300 SEK, above the bracket about 500 SEK. If you get a payrise of 1k, 300 will be lost to taxes and your real payrise is 700. Municipal and regional tax is roughly 33,3% total, if you add govt tax it’s 55% for everything earnt above that bracket.

      @HKZ P I suspected you'd make such a misguided claim. No. Pay attention: the party in Sweden you're referring to is the Social Democratic Party - they support social democracy, NOT democratic socialism. In case you don't understand the difference, here it is:
      Social democracy is a concept of democratic government with a focus on social programs - welfare, education, healthcare, etc. In many ways, the United States can be considered a social democracy - we have Obamacare, Social Security, federal grants and loans for student education, etc.
      Democratic socialism is a concept of socialism that attempts to be representative of the people - government control of property, the means of production, and the economy.
      Notice that Sweden exhibits every aspect of social democracy but NONE of the notable aspects of democratic socialism. That's because Sweden is not a socialist country of any kind - as the Swedish people in this video pointed out, they tried that, and it failed. Thus, they embraced social democracy with a focus on free markets, privatized means of production, and private property - much like the United States.

    As a Swede I can say that the picture painted in this video is incredibly inaccurate. First of the sources you've used are terrible, Johan Norberg for example is far right and thus heavily biased (he even had a party called Anarchy frontier). Secondly, it's clear you've done the (sadly) common mistake and assumed that Stockholm (Capital) politics is applicable to the entire country.
    Exhibit A, private healthcare outside of the Capital is minimal. The long queues for health care as described in the video is the result of a quickly growing metropole whose health care didn't keep up. Mainly because the muncipalities that the Capital consists of have heavily reduced taxation to further grow it's population. So, no matter if you are pro or against private health care, the video does not reflect reality. Nor does the arguments.
    Exhibit B, Swedish university education is free. The debt which is mentioned (that, by the way has a 0,16% interest and life-long pay-off time), is a voluentary loan that can be taken to increase living standard and removes the need to work aside from your studies. In reality, this loan is in it's entirety spent on rent and pleasure (alcohol, food etc). This stems from the fact that Swedes in general move to their own independent home by the age 18-20. Now if you are from the capital with it's high rents and still want to have your own place and study at one of the local universities, you are going to accumulate quite a high debt. However saying that going to university in Sweden accumulates debt is wrong on every level. It's like saying that visiting a resturant accumulates obesity, no your level and prefrence of consumption at the resturant affects this. Another thing not mentioned is that students recieve 2000 SEK monthly if they take the full loan, these 2000 kr are free and never to be repayed. For this reason a lot of students, me included when I studied, take the full loan and then use the actual loan to use as a none interest based loan to lay a fundation for a cheaper morgage which otherwise have a 2-4% interest. In other words, students go in debt, but their general debt is lower and with lowered interest than if you took no student loan.
    Exhibit C, Sweden does take from the rich and give to everyone (including the poor). If you earn more than 1.5 that of the avarage wage, which this year is considered ~ 55.000 SEK a month, you pay an additional 20-25% tax on anything above this sum. Meaning that on all money earned above ~55k SEK per month you pay 49-57% tax depending on your muncipality (lowest in the capital region). In other words, the taxation system is built to benefit middle to upper middle income earners (ranging from 0.5 to 1.49 times the avarage salary). Meaning, the vast majority of the population. To say that the system punishes the middle class is the most inaccurate thing I've ever heard. If anything it shows how little Johan Norberg knows about the taxation system of our country.
    It makes me sad that this video has provided such inaccurate information for so many people. If you are not going to use reliable sources and instead interview a pro-anarchy author and people who are completely unknown, then atleast use a disclaimer that the conclusions made are opinion based.
    If you want to make an accurate video, feel free to send questions to me and I'll be happy to find you proper sources to answer your question correctly. Or you can, you know, just interview someone who works with economics and such. Instead of interviewing an author on the subject.
    (My first ever thumbs down on a youtube video)

      Regarding the taxes, it's certainly true that we don't tax capital enough but that is especially true since "we came to our senses" as Johan Norberg puts it. Since the 90's we've decreased the amount of tax we levie on capital and bussinesses by quite a bit and during the same time we've seen soaring wealth disparities and a decline in funding for healthcare etc.

So now math is racist, and grades are racist, and our history has been twisted beyond recognition. Education would have been the great equalizer that allowed kids in bad neighborhoods to escape to the middle class, but feminists sabotage it with stuff like "common core" which obscures simple ideas so parents can't even help their kids with their schoolwork.

      @HKZ P I didn't say anything about failure. I said decline. They have been steadily losing overall influence since the 80s. Years such as 2014 are clearly outliers in that trend. I will not pretend that those upticks are insignificant, they do not seem to result in lasting increases. This is all according to your link. As for gaining positions such as prime minister, bear in mind that even super liberal places such as NYC and the state of California are capable of electing Republican leaders. This doesn't suddenly make them Republican regions.
      Thus far nearly every argument levied in the fifty conversations you've decided to copypasta bomb with your wiki link have been strawmanning. Regardless, even if you wish to dismiss a shift towards right wing nationalism as temporary xenophobic insanity, it still marks a shift in the country's political climate resulting in a steady net decline in the influence of the Social Democrats. It could shift further in the future, or back the other way again, but denying that it has in fact shifted noticeably is plainly false. Trying to downplay the significance of that shift based on your personal feels about MUH XENOPHOBIA is nothing but flat-earth quality special pleading.

    I’m a bit curious why this show decides to tell so many half truths instead of telling the whole story. Is there an agenda?
    An example is the debt for higher education. The reason why so e students are in debt after they have graduated is that they don’t work part time, like students without fund would do in most other nations. There is no fee for the education and you can actually live quite well off the study grant and the study loan combined. A year or so after you have graduated, you start paying back on that loan. The interest rate is for 2020 is just 0,16% and the amount you pay on the debt each year is based on your yearly income, so the loans are very beneficial. The idea is that you should have payed back your entire loan before you get your pension. Most people, who have not gained a net income after they graduated, when taking student loan, are the ones who do not get a job in the same sector they studied to. There are of course many students who do not take a loan at all, those who are well off or those that work while studying. The education itself is all free except for the literature.

      For a start, the idea that Sweden does not have a progressive tax system is absurd. It has a highly progressive tax system, one of the most progressive in Europe, and the bulk of government revenue comes from income tax and payroll tax:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxation_in_Sweden#Income_tax
      www.oecd.org/tax/revenue-statistics-sweden.pdf
      The second point of contention is that socialism doesn't even mean what this video is trying to portray it as. Socialism is not a system of command economy, Socialism is a principle of economic exchange which arose in Europe as a backlash to the newly-created bourgeoisie, which had replaced the aristocracy as the main economic force in society. The peasants were no longer serfs, but then again, their new masters had no feudal obligation to them anymore, and so the poor became landless, homeless impoverished masses instead. Socialism arose, first in Germany then all over western Europe, as a demand to redress that balance, since the rich were getting rich specifically upon the backs of the poor. When the economist from the Cato Institute tries to tell you that socialism is controlling the economy, it's because he and his ideology believe that; it's called laissez-faire capitalism, and I'm sure I don't have to explain that any further. But, one of the hallmarks of this economic view is seeing ANY government intervention in the marketplace as a polluting influence, and frames all public enterprise as unwarranted 'control' of the economy. Socialism, by contrast, is merely the theory of exchange whereby the poor are protected from the excesses of the rich via regulations, protections and welfare paid for by the wealthy. Everyone already does it, including the United States, it's just that Sweden does it a lot MORE than we do, hence people referring to it as a socialist country, when in fact they are simply a democratic nation who utilizes a greater degree of socialism than we do.
      Thirdly, the information given about how the 'socialist period' tanked the economy is way off target. In fact, both employment _and_ GDP rose in Sweden during that entire period. In fact, their economy crashed actually thanks to a housing bubble and the global financial crashes. www.peoplespolicyproject.org/2020/03/02/fareed-zakaria-is-completely-ignorant-about-the-nordics/
      Basically, everything substantial you've been told by this video was false.

      n. Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.
      Take a look at the Tax link you posted. Only one of the 3 major tax systems is "slightly" progressive; the income tax. I say slightly because it is a flat tax up to the first $45,000 (USD) and then only the next 20k is taxed at +20% and then +25% after that. Moreover;
      "A person working in Sweden typically earns around 117,000 SEK per month. Salaries range from 15,800 SEK (lowest average) to 518,000 SEK (highest average, actual maximum salary is higher)." www.salaryexplorer.com/salary-survey.php?loc=209&loctype=1
      What does the above mean? It means that the AVERAGE Swede pays the max amount and only the very poor pay lesser ... BY A WIDE MARGIN. Only 25% or less earn 679,200 SEK per year and even those people are at the top bracket. Very few Swedes pay the base 32% So a Progressive tax that NO ONE PAYS is a flat tax.
      Lets look at your third point. You base your entire point on a single hyperbolic article written by Fareed Zakaria and debunked by Matt Bruenig who wrote in September 16, 2019

Things like universal vote, the healthcare system, the school system, the pension system, paid vacation and so on. In 1938 the unions of sweden and the employers of sweden signed a deal that they themselves should negotiate when it comes to salaries, work benefits and so on. Canadian citizens who are put on waiting lists in Canada, will seek treatment in other Countries and pay cash. A friend of mine from Scotland, his mom died from type 2 diabetes as she was put on an endless waiting list, she was older and they stall the care at that point. I notice Mick Jagger flew his butt back to America when he needed heart value replacement. He chose not to take advantage of the wonderful National Health Care in England. As mentioned, the student loans isnt acctually for studies. Its for living in your own apartment, if you decide not to work while studieing. Its not a loan anyone -have- to take, its a loan most -wants- to take. While some swedes choose to live with theire parents during the studies or work, most of us choose not to.
    You have to remember that sweden is heavily urbanised, meaning the vast majority of people lives close to a university and could very well live at theire parents during studies. The fact that 50% of swedish households are solo households is linked with the fact that we generally move from our parents at 19-20 years of age.
    So you have to questions your self, why would we want to get our selves in debt....?
    Because its an awesome loan!
    With all but non existent intrest. Its a loan banks wont recognice as an actually loan, so it wont hurt your creditrating in the future, Its a ridicouly slow payment plan, based more on your income, then the need to get money back.
    Its also suggested that we wont get return of the investment in sweden on studies; which indeed is true but only for for the cultural sector, (but then again...mention one cultureworker outside Hollywood ever getting a good salery) teachers (which is partly false, since it only applys for teachers working with the toddlers) and for some reasons biochemical analyzers....for the rest of us, belive me...we get our investment back...

And the prime ministers and even the people keep screaming “WE’RE NOT SOCIALIST!” But Americans think if you have Universal Healthcare and Free Education that means socialism. These people just want a Capitalist economy but want the government to pay them to sit around and pay for everything (Welfare for the rich I like to call it).
    2.) America is not Scandinavia! I seriously hate how leftist want to bring in Swedish, Finnish or Danish politics, way of life and so much but when you ask them “Why don’t you move these?” They’ll scream “ITS TOO EXPENSIVE!!” If we want to fix our country, we have to fix it the AMERICAN way. @Mecoracon Lola So...what you're saying is that Americans live the ultimate consumerist lifestyle, characterised by consumption of massively unsustainable quantities of finite resources, made possible by outsourcing production to the rest of the world and consuming the combined resources of many, many poorer countries? And you look down on other countries that live closer to within their means, because those plebs don't have the benefit of global hegemony allowing them to consume way beyond sustainable limits at the expense of other countries?
      Or is it moreso that you've never questioned why Americans are able to consume such massive quantities at such ridiculously low prices? Maybe you're not familiar with the concept of externalities in economic theory, and you don't realise that Americans are externalising the true cost of their consumption to the rest of the world in order to maintain stupidly low prices for themselves? Perhaps you don't realise that America's rate of consumption isn't sustainable even at current levels, and the American model of consumerist Capitalism pushed onto the rest of the world is the primary factor driving resource depletion and ecological destruction?
      I'm no Socialist, but I also don't idolise the delusional free-market ideology Americans have been so deeply brainwashed with for decades. First, he is interviewing libertarians. That's like asking a muslim on the virtues of the christian crusade on Jerusalem and the middle east. Probably not gonna be very positive. First guy (from the Cato institute - a libertarian think tank) says Sweden was very rich in the 70's but then squandered it on social democratic policies in the 70's. Sweden was run uninterrupted by the social democratic party from the 1930's until the 1990's. The riches accumulated up until the 70's was accumulated under social democracy. To say that social democracy was a failed experiment because of some stupid policies in the 70's is disingenuos at best. Sweden is still rather social democratic. Not as much as it once was, but still very much a welfare state compared to most countries. There are other misleading narratives as well. But oh well.

      @JohnsonJLB 4 года назад

      @@latjolajban81 Actually, I still think the video is accurate here. A social democracy is different than democratic socialism. Although, it appears we're just switching the words and the two should be the same that doesn't appear to be the case when doing a quick google search. So when the commentator say's that democratic socialism failed I believe he is still correct. One big difference between the two is that democratic socialism is less free trade, and less capitalistic. Whereas a social democracy is more free trade and capitalistic. So, yes the democratic socialist policies put into place were reversed because they failed. Why they failed? It could have been timing and it could have been those policies are just unsustainable. I tend to agree with the later. Sweden may have more welfare programs than the US, but it is also more free trade than the US. While this video doesn't get into the gritty details like it could I still think it represents truth well.

    Awesome report, just a quick caveat with college debt. The issue in Sweden is the fact that colleges are not located all over the country, they are in the main cities so most students have to travel and live in other cities to go to college. There are 31 public universities in Sweden vs 1,626 public colleges the United States. If the United States could have a more level education system in college then the smaller schools that are already in the smaller cities could sustain a larger student group while being free to the students. The United States could avoid the issue that Sweden has because they have more colleges per capita than Sweden. Mostly everything else was spot on...

It seems like this is less than the cost of one year's study in the US (for a public four-year college degree including housing). This is a loan you can take to be able to move away from home and feed yourself without working part time, which enables everyone to study regardless of you economical background. On top of this we are all given roughly 350 dollars a month for studying, with additions to that if you have kids. So yes, most of us have student debt, but you need to consider WHY we do and I'm curious as to why they didn't even bother to explain this in the video.

The debt comes from necessities such as food, housing, transportation and clothing. I know students who live at their parents for free and takes the loan (which is almost rent free, 0,16%) and invests it all, or save it to get a bigger loan from a bank past studies in order to buy a house - roughly 57 000$ after 5 years of study.

Socialism is not necessarily government control of the economy, but the fact remain that it has a single payer system. Social Democrats came into power in 1932, and their socialistic reforms made Sweden one of the early nations to get out of the great depression. Sweden's free medical care, 90% unionization of the workforce, free college, robust welfare state is what we should have here. It is ironically true that socialism in Sweden still have it so that they are still more free market than the USA.

      @@raouljoseph1411 Be honest, in your high school were the students with the highest marks the smartest, most intelligent or were they they ones who simply studied the most? There's a reason they say "The A students work for the C students and the B students work for the government".

      @@jasondashney I can't argue against your statement because I have seen that results. Yep the average kid is now the president of grandpa company and the employees were the smartest kids in school, are now working under him. Seeing their frustrations and hatred is pathetic.

    Excellent video!! I’m from Sweden and I have spent my life observing these strengths and mistakes of Sweden’s socialism.
    And yes, we keep making new mistakes. At the same time we evade many of the problems that exist in the US.
    I believe that US has a lot to learn from Sweden.

    That last comment is gold. Each country is different and have their own set of problems. You can't copy-paste solutions from another country that is completely different. Each country arrives to a better place thru mistakes they made.
    Transparency in decision making and open discussion of societal problems go a long way when finding those individual solutions for each country IMO.

    Seeing some comments here essentially saying: Don't accept the truth from this guy because he's right-leaning, but continue to believe/overlook the lies when they come from the left.

    This is the most complete assessment of the reality of the Swiss governmental model. It's appalling that any presidential candidate would make the call to be 'like' Sweden without a clue. Well, I didn't have a clue (though not sold on the liberal rhetoric) and am now informed on the subject. Thank you!

This is the first time I've seen this comedian, great clips, and of course, great interviews with the Swedish professionals! Thank you.
