      I had a dachshund.

She had relieved from suffering while in my arms.

@@brownsugarlicorice she would start to make a quack noise when she’d be running around/doing lots of exercise, and once she got out of breath she struggled to get it back and you could feel her breathing rattling in her chest, she also had a few episodes which can only really be described as a dog version of an asthma attack. It was when the video said that dogs can honk/quack when they have a partially collapsed trachea that made it all click in my head. Luckily though she should be ok, it’s something that’s quite common in the breed!

I was raised by dachshunds, had them for fifty years and saw two through back surgery. The surgeon told us that Gonzo was not peeing as expected after surgery and they had to squeeze him to empty his bladder; there were concerns there might be nerve damage. We got him home and straight to the back yard and propped him up next to his very favorite thing to pee on. He peed. And he peed. We didn't think he'd stop peeing. And we realized that there wasn't a damn thing wrong with his bladder. The problem had been that the vet hospital had been expecting him to pee on *their* schedule, on a vertical object of *their* choosing. And that was not how Gonzo the Obnoxious rolled. He lived long and prospered, and is sorely missed over a quarter of a century later.

In German we call them "Dackel". we also have the term "Wackeldackel" which refers to the little statues some people have in their car that constantly wobble their head once set in motion. It has a nice ring to it with the rime. Also also especially in old buildings, it's not uncommon to have long, heavy pillows in front of doors so the cold air won't get in through the gap on the ground. The pillows are sometimes in Dachshound-form which is so fitting.

I've had two. These are the most stubborn, loyal, sweetest dogs I've ever seen. They adopt you not the other way around. I always say a dauschund is 12 inches tall with 12 feet of attitude. They don't know they're small and resemble a food. This is a breed that has to be socialized carefully but they are perfect for older owners and homebodies. They love cuddling with their humans and hiding under the blanket (serious burrowers as they've been bred).
My family had a boy who didn't like anyone but my mom. He'd growl at strangers but would not go after anyone unless they got too close to mom. He was mistreated in his last home and he adored my mother, they were inseparable. I was tolerated because I was the cook in the house. He was the smartest dog I'd ever seen. I once told him if he caught a mouse that had gotten in the house I would give him his own steak. He killed the mouse and proudly showed it off. When he growled at me my mom asked what I did to him. He was clearly the favorite child. When he disappeared, I got my little girl. She was the sweetest dog I'd ever seen and I would have placed no money on her standing up for herself. One night she was outside my room barking and growling. She had cornered a opossum outside my door and was keeping it away from me. I was heart broken when she passed away at the vet's being treated for kidney problems.

As a German I feel like many people underestimate that the Dachshund (Dackel) is a pure hunting breed and is still used for mainly this purpose in Germany. They need lots of exercise, long walks and a strict upbringing as they are incredibly stubborn. It’s also important to keep them skinny and fit, bc even slight overweight can damage their back in the long term.
For their specific hunting purposes they need to be strong willed, independent and fearless to a certain degree. “Dachshund“ literally means badger-dog (like you said), as they are/were supposed to go inside batcher or rabbit holes to clear them. But you really can’t argue about the fact that they’re cute and charming😊, that’s why so many European royal families including emperor Wilhelm II held them as pets.

But other than that, she'll bark, and hide behind me. As for socialising with other dogs, they have to be either at the same height or smaller. It's one little step at a time and just being patient and reassure her that no everyone means harm ( She was beaten up with the rest of her siblings when she was with her ex-family). Maybe introducing your dog to quiet places could reduce stress? And make one baby step at a time? Maybe she would act differently if meeting another daschund? (Mine's behavious changes when she encounters one, she seems super happy). They also say daschund comes in pair so if you have time, money, having another one could probably help too? :)

And loud is an understatement. My grandmother's doxie was actually quiet and polite for most of her life, but as she got older and a little on the deaf side, she suddenly discovered her ability to bark, and could be heard from anywhere in the house, or even from all the way in the back yard, the minute someone opened the gate to approach the front door.

@@kcts7757 I think it's the fact that they _are_ smart, and stubborn, that makes people feel they're difficult to house train. Some folks who find themselves with a dog breed that's more stubborn than they expected just find themselves at a loss as to how to get an animal that's decided it's smarter than you are to actually listen to you.
Especially, from my experience, with small breeds. These owners often seem to fall into a rut of "Well, I can just pick them up and remove them from X situation," or "Well, I can just get more puppy pads if they keep going in the house," because they're small, and thus don't make as large of a mess, and are "portable." I saw this a lot with my grandmother's doxie, and my stepsister's chihuahuas, where instead of teaching them properly, they just covered large areas in puppy pads and tried to "encourage" them to go only on those.

    • @ClockworkEngineer
      @ClockworkEngineer 2 года назад +12

This may have been rhetorical, but I'm going to answer anyway. It's because they were designed to be very aggressive hunters. Going into a cramped hole to, well, murder a small animal takes a lot of aggression. This is called "prey drive": the instinct to pursue, capture, and kill prey. Dachshunds are going to be little killers, it's just bred into them. This doesn't cause aggression towards people though. That's all up to how they are raised.

    • @susanc4622

they were bred to fight animals their own size and bigger in a cramped tunnels. High adrenaline fighting needs fierceness. There have been news highlights of a small dachshund running up on a bear to protect it's owner. Dachshunds usually have a favorite human and disregard others in the house. My dachshund is a total mommy's boy and likes it that way. He has never been afraid to tell very large men to get out of his house and needs a little time to acclimate well to others. Overall, they're a great breed and aren't yippy and nippy like other small dog breeds. They're like a pocket hound. They're also incredibly intelligent and have HUGE personalities. It feels like my dachshund really understands what we are saying. When he was much younger we taught him how to differentiate between the road and the sidewalk and he refused to cross the road without a human to come with him. He was trained to walk without a leash and stayed with us the whole time. Never walked out into the road. They also live up to 20 if taken care of properly. I feel like they are the perfect dog.

We had two of these when I was in my teens. One was the laziest lovebug ever (long-haired breed). The other, short-haired, was 100% a hunter. And extremely stubborn.
We had so much fun with her - we could just point at a random spot on the ground and say "mouse!" and she would dig a bit, stick her nose in and take a few deep sniffs. If there was no mice, she would look at us with a confused "the hell did you do that for?" face. But if she picked up rodent scent, she would go absolutely nuts. There was NO way to stop her once she got going. If you tried to drag/carry her away, she would wiggle free and sprint back to the digging site and continue.
One time she saw a mouse or rat run into a semi rotten tree we had in the backyard and her whole body just went into bloodlust mode. She dug all the way through the tree with dead wood and dirt flying everywhere. 4+ hours later she came out with 2 dead rodents in her mouth.

Great video, I really enjoyed it and you are so gentle and considerate while grooming. I like the ear cover, such a good idea. The dogs clearly trusted you. Very informative.

Our first ever family dog was a Dachshund and we named him Pepsi. He died way back in 1994 and I don’t really remember him aside from pictures, because I was still extremely young when he passed. But what I do remember just how calm and loving he was, especially with my grandparents. He loved my Grandparents so much, that they took him with them when he was about 2 years old. We were shifting houses that time, so we let them take care of him. When we went to take him back, he stopped eating and wouldn’t stop crying. So, my grandma came all the way from where they stayed, about five hours away, to take him with her. And there he lived in their huge house with them until the ripe old age of 14.

Ahh I miss my little dachshund, she was such a sweet girl. She was with me since I was about five, I’m 18 now and lost her two years ago. She was an old little gal, but still young at heart. I hope she’s crunching bottles in heaven, I love you Callie.

Are fearless as stated....my late Dachshund, Max, who I nicknamed Weasel Head, would rough house with my Pittie. He was left at a house I used to rent and just took him with when I bought my home. I asked the owners if they wanted him back but they just said he seemed pretty happy with me and knew he would be taken care of, so that was it. Even in his latter years, old, fat, and toothless he would "attack" and "bite" my Pittie and waller all over him when Zeus finally laid down on the floor.

We have a miniature longhaired dachshund. He is so ferocious when he’s barking behind our fence. But what a comical character to say the least. He loves going camping and trips to the beach.

Not aggressive, BOLD. As it clearly states in our standard: aggression is not tolerated however the Dachshund should be bold to the point of rashness.

We had a Beagle Dachshund mix when I was younger named Rusty. She had the larger beagle build but her face and coloring looked so much like these two little angels. She was the sweetest dog I've ever known and even 20 years later I still miss her so much 💔

Absolutely love this breed. Had one from 1964 to 1979. He was a yard dog back in the chain your dog days. One of the sweetest critters I ever had.
